To James KC1ECV, You were right my friend about turning duplex to off to kill the transmit. I guess that particular radio can't be affected by that so now I guess you'll have to set a switch in your own mind do not grab the mic while monitoring those PS channels. Using Debian Linux 8, CHIRP daily-20151023 (latest downloaded from the CHIRP page), and an FTDI cable from Valley Enterprises. I can download settings from my Yaesu FT-8800 just fine. I just got my hands on a th 900d 144 radio. I have hooked it up and programed it with local repeaters and frequencies no problem. Now what I am trying to do is import some local public service frequencies, but have the transmit turned off on these channels. I have done this with CHIRP on a baofeng handheld using the option of off in duplex, but that does not work with the th 9000d. Does anyone know of a way in the csv to disable transmit on certain channels for the th 9000d? Thanks for you help James Jalbert KC1ECV

I just saved my current chirp image as a CSV file to my Documents folder. Upon examining that folder I found all my other image saves, but alas, no CSV file. I tried to save 3 more times but no joy. anybody have any ideas where this might be going? I am running Windows Vista on a laptop.

HI, After more playing around with it I don't understand why Chirp is trying to read 849 memories for Band A. Band A only has 799 memories. I entered memory range 0 to 799 and clicked Refresh, it read 799 memories, but on clicking Banks (Band A) it tried to retrieve bank information for memory 749. So the range doesn't apply to the Banks tabs and Chirp reports errors and wont read any more from the radio until I close and open again. At least it's talking to the radio but doesn't seem to know how many locations to read. Thanks Wenlock

Trying to program FT897 running win8, the prolific driver is good, I can use my other cables to program baofeng radios fine. the cable for the 897 when plugged in results in no errors, I have the latest Chirp daily build installed. when trying to download from the radio, it does not communicate at all. I set the baud rate on both the radio and the com port to make sure they are the same no luck, any other ideas for things i can try? sorry if this is dupe, the first one i got a bounce thanks

Hello group! I got a UV-B5 and I don't have any problem down loading radio to computer and then uploading program to the UV-B5. But this is what happens, if I have a repeater that has a "-" on the offset, the radio will take it and after you use it one time, the radio will by itself change all the "-" to "+" on every repeater that is in the radio. Is there any help for the radio or just use it for all the repeaters that have a "+" for the offset? Lamar KT4DLB

As Shon, K2QT mentioned I agree that the Baofeng UV-82 series is a good choice at a low cost. They have a good build quality and have a higher duty cycle than the UV5R series. (My UV5RV2+ failed during a long rag chewing session, the UV-82 has done fine with similar sessions.) For about $15-$20 more, the UV-82HP has higher power. 7 watts as opposed to 5. For a dual band mobile, the Anytone AT-5888UV has 50 VHF and 40 UHF Watts and provides dual watch and some other features, but is ~$290.00. There are others in that price range, but the above is the only one I have experienced. The low cost radios are lower wattage (which may not matter depending on expected use), I don't know anyone that has one - so cannot comment on the quality. As you mention, if you move away from dual band, Yaesu, Kenwood, etc. can be had for <$175. I have tried to program the UV-5R with Chirp and finally find out that I had to use a different model number to be able to even get the radio to upload to computer. I have added all my channels to the radio and downloaded to radio thinking that everything is fix. I can key the HT and it don't key the repeater. If I have it on channel mode, it shows both +- above the frequency display. It will drop the frequency down 0.600 like it suppose to. Ok if I have it on frequency mode , it shows - and drops down the 0.600 as its suppose to. Still don't key the repeater. I have a Baofeng UV-3 and it keys the repeater, I have a Yaesu FT-250 and it keys the repeater. I'm at my wits end on trying to get this HT program. If someone can please tell me what to do I will really appreciate it. Danny KT4DLB

I think the problem might be that you have turned off access to Memory Mode and/or the menu somehow with CHIRP. I don't have the VX-2R but try this as it seems to work with a number of different radios: 1 - Export your channel settings to a spreadsheet 2 - factory reset the radio 3 - Download a new image from the radio (preferably while in channel mode) 4 - Save the image for possible later use 5 - Import the channel settings from the spreadsheet (or load the spreadsheet and copy them to the new image) 6 - Save the new image 7 - Upload the image to the radio Please see the CHIRP documents for any steps you are not sure how to do. I recently started using CHIRP to program my VX-2R. All went fine, have uploaded to the radio, but now the radio is stuck in Memory mode ( lock is off) and also can't get into SET mode. I have checked all the settings but can't figure out why it is doing this. I have good communications between the computer and the radio. It reads and writes successfully, except ... I get an error message on write even though the radios says "PASS". The error message is " An error has occurred. Failed to communicate with radio. 'Serial' object has not attribute 'read'." I did a full reset, downloaded and installed the latest Chirp version and it still says the same thing. I am running Windows 7. The other strange thing the radio does now is that it shows empty channels with the VFO contents and the 'M' blinking when in the memory mode. That hasn't happened before. There is nothing in the menu settings related to this and I cannot find anything regarding this new feature in the manual. Any help would be appreciated. N5DQ

Turns out it looks like most of the CP2102 USB adapters are 3.3V output. Specifications for TTL logic is 5V. I have ordered a CP2102 that has both so we'll try that and see what happens. In the dim times (when we used a kerosene lamp to illuminate our computer screens) a common practice was to use a Max232 to convert RS232 levels to TTL for programming radios when you did not want to purchase a $40 cable from RT systems. It was often hit and miss if the radio would work because the levels were sometimes not quite right..... Should have the different CP2102 this week and report back. >Thanks for the response Jim. I have two ICOM IC-2100H radios and I am having problems accessing their programming. CABLE: Valley Enterprises: RPC=IV8-UF (Icom USB OPC-478 FTDI). I have downloaded and installed the associated driver, according to the web address on the package. DEVICE MANAGER REPORTS: ----------------------------------------------- USB Serial Port (COM7). Device Provider: FTDI. *Driver Date: 8-26-2014. *Driver Version: 2.12.0. BPS: 9600. Data Bits: 8. Parity: None. Stop Bits: 1. Flow Control: None. *NOTE: Is there a newer driver? CHIRP SETUP: ----------------------- Port: COM7. Vendor: Icom. Model: IC-2100H. RADIO SETUP: ----------------------- 1. Turn On, Holding M/CALL Button - then displays CLONE. 2. Pressing the S-MW button - then displays CLONE OUT. 3. And then followed by ////... (indicator) showing data being sent. PROBLEM: ----------------- I have initiated Icom's sending mode, followed by Chirp's receiving mode. I have initiated Chirp's receiving mode, followed by Icom's sending mode. In both cases, I get the following error: "An error has occurred" "Failed to communicate with radio: Unexpected response from radio" QUESTIONS: -------------------- What am I doing wrong? Technically speaking the Baeofeng radios are illegal on FRI and GMRS. Reason is that they have antennas that can be removed and their power levels. [chirp_users] Adding freqs.

I am trying to program a UV 82l. I have the first 16 channels already taken care of. In the next 22 channels I want to put in the GMRS and FRS frequencies. I want to be able to put all of them in at once without having to do them one at a time. Can someone tell me how to do that please. any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

Just loaded latest Chirp build on clean install Win 7. When I do a Repeaterbook query, the mouse pointer turns to a hour glass and sits there until I close Chirp. Just like it can't an Internet connection. Pls advise. William

Thanks for the response Jim. I wish it as easy as finding a short. I have three of the converted 6-in-1 cables and the behavior is the same. I will keep playing with it. I did not order the cheapest available CP2102 available from China and notice there are several different styles. Perhaps this one is somehow different in levels or buffering from the others. I have read online others have had success programming the FT-60 with the CP2102 so something is different. One thing of note is this is one of the CP2102s that John said has the TXD and RXD switched. I have been using one of the 6-in-1 programming cables with the counterfeit Prolific chip in it. After reading John Miklor's article about using the CP2102 in place of the Prolific counterfeit I replace the chip with the CP2102. The cable works perfectly with the UV-5R radios but no longer works with the Yaesu FT-60. It is the same with my MacBook Pro or if I use FT-60 commander. OK, after some more playing around, I think in my case the problem is indeed mechanical. I have 2 cables. The one that came with the radio and a Baofeng branded one I bought when I couldn't get the first one to work with the Mac. I now think the original issue was not having the right Prolific chip drivers, but as I then changed the cable as well, *that* became the problem. Going back to my original cable, and it works every time. (Except after first plugging in - seems that until Chirp has tried to communicate the ports are in the wrong configuration, and it opens up the mic.) So my - so far - way of working is: Plug cable into USB Launch Chirp Try to download - this will fail Plug cable into radio (while it is off) and then turn radio on Now download (or upload, I guess - not tried yet) seems to work fine. I can turn the radio off/on and it will still load. I had attached pics of the 2 cables to show the difference but the list rejected the email :( Basically, one of them has better clearance on the casing around the sockets - and that's the one that works. [chirp_users] Baofeng Radio

I just bought some additional Baofeng radios (BF-F9 V2+) and am trying to program them using the latest Daily Build Chirp software. I downloaded from my old radio but when I uploaded to my new radio the labels did not come through. Am I missing something? Someone else programmed my original radio and I don't know what software they used. Everything else seems to work okay. It is just the labels that are missing. Dave Sunde KG7RYA

Hi There, love your work, I am new to ham radio. I have just purchased a TYT TH-9800 I have managed to make chirp work via my windows PC but I would like to use it on my mac book air. I have down loaded the latest version but it does not show the th-9800 in the drop down box. I have been trying to understand what 'daily builds' are but am lost with that one. I also saw that you say that there are some issues with Mac (surprise surprise) Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am planning on getting several other radios soon, if this software is a usefull as it appears I will be more than happy to donate to assist you with your good work. Hi, Just installed Chirp on Ubuntu 14.04 and can't get it to read anything from the radio. I have confirmed the cable works, both the RS-92 software and the Windows version of Chirp running in Wine can talk to the radio 100%. The USB to Serial cable is a genuine chip, not one of the fakes and works in Windows and Linux just not with the Ubuntu version of Chirp. It has also been used with the Icom Android app on a tablet and phone. All lines have Error in the Name field and no data is shown from the radio in any cell. Also, there doesn't appear to be any communication with the radio as the light on the adaptor doesn't light at any time. It lights when RS-92 is talking to the radio and when the Windows version of Chirp is talking to the radio. The com port is /dev/ttyUSB0, working with the other software but not with Chirp Ubuntu. [chirp_users] iCloud Drive?

I would like to save my files to iCloud Drive, but I can’t find a way to do this. I put a couple of files there and I can’t find iCloud Drive in the Open File system in Chirp. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Bilol WB4WTN
