[chirp_users] Application Crashes in Mac

After some help from some folks on this users group I was able to get my Mac to recognized the the serial cable. However the problem I am having now is the application crashes after the upload from the radio is complete. I uploaded the latest version of Chirp(20170627) but that did not solved the problem. The Mac is running macOS Sierra version 10.12.5. Thanks for the help. John Laiosa N1BSO

The cheap cable are not a real problem as long as you use the older driver. Does anyone have a very good relationship with the management of POWERWERX.COM? I have tried to speak to them about CHIRP but they are under some prejudice that CHIRP bricks radios so that they are unrecoverable. If someone knows the owner, I'd like to lobby for acceptance of this fine software with the object that they could persuade some companies to share programming data with the developers of CHIRP. 73 DR N1EA

Hello Mike, Thanks for the off-list direct reply (copied below). Others including myself are trying to help you but we don't get responses from you to help fix the problem that you are having. A screen print of your Device Manager showing the COM ports that are being recognized would help. You can upload such a screen shot anonymously to http://imgur.com. Just post the link they will give you. As you have just been told, your COM port is not being seen. Can you see your comport under Device Manager? What you wrote to me doesn't even make sense. i am going to spent my time with software that will not works > CHIRP works fine. It supports the COM port that you have. Thousands of people use this software every day. A few have problems, but usually it is just an operator error. If you would like to write to the list calmly, we could help you find the error you have. Often it is a cable that is defective. Some cables do not fit in the radios. Often - with Windows - the user has purchased a cable with a counterfeit electronic chip in it they are based on the Prolific PL-2303 USB chip. Windows detects the chip and updates the driver, and the driver now updated won't work with the fake chip in the USB to serial port converter. There are suitable converters - they are based on the FTDI chip. [chirp_users] totally confused

Brand new to linux, but just managed to get Linux to run with Ubuntu on a laptop and now trying to get Chirp. Right now the laptop has a problem with the networks. It can connect to a wifi, but nothing after that. Will likely just try to download on another computer and transfer Chirp over via a usb drive. When I read the instructions though, Ubuntu refers to something called a PPA which I do not see any information on what it is, what it needs, and not much about how its installed. It gives a couple of lines of code, but have no idea where it should be typed. To the real pros, this probably is so basic as to be assumed knowledge, but in my first 8 hours of linux its a bit overwhelming. I saw a live CD, but that looks like you must boot from the CD every time you need to use Chirp. Is that a practical and viable way to do it, even if linux is already installed?
