[chirp_users] Yaesu FT60 connection problem

I am using the cable from RT Systems to attach my FT60R to the system. When the cable is connected, Port /dev/ttyUSB0 is displayed. If the cable is not connected, no port is displayed in the radio box. However, using the method for which the RT System windows program uses, I get a time out on the Download procedure. The method used is turn the FT60R on holding the [Moni/TCall] key. The dial is rotated to CLONE. The [FW] key is pressed so CLONE blinks and comes back. The OK button is selected and the transfer should take place. Any ideas? Jim

I suggest that the file for the latest stable be replaced by a Daily Build that was an excellent one. Better yet would be to ELIMINATE a stable build and just have a link to Today's latest Daily Build. It would eliminate 99% of people's problems with CHIRP. Because of the problem with the stable build existing, people get frustrated and eventually get fed up with CHIRP. They have a point, the stable version should at least be changed to a version after the Baofeng firmware change that introduced incompatibility. CHIRP is an excellent program, it deserves much better. Eliminate the stable build and just have a Daily Build. Those builds are stable enough. 73 David N1EA

When using the graduated squelch settings under Service Settings, what is the correct setting for Carrier Squelch Setting under Basic Settings? As an alternate to setting Menu 32 to SITE, what effect would setting ANI-ID to OFF have? Or are there different, quieter alarm sounds besides 119 (32 still set to SITE, but surrounding folks wouldn't know you just pressed Alarm)? Work Mode Settings is confusing to me since I don't see all of the CHIRP settings reflected in my radio. MR A and MR B show 51 and 41 respectively, yet my radio loads 27, 20, even after battery swap. The VFO A & B: similarly display last used freqs and not what CHIRP has. Display A or B:is set to B, but I don't what that means since A & B: are always visible. I am trying again to get the CHIRP program to work with my Icom T70 and it Is NOT obvious. I have a nice FTDI from Mark Dunkle. KJ6ZWL. I have spoken with Mark and we ar enboth mystified as to why this doesn't work. I got as far as to make it stop SCANNING all the time when I plug the cable in. I follow the key presses to get the radio into CLONING mode. I set it to "CL out." Then I try to "read" the radio into Chirp. The only thing I can see to do in CHIRP is to click on "RADIO" and then "DOWNLOAD FROM RADIO." Is there something else I should be doing? I jhave been trying this since January and just haven't had time to fool with it soince it is such a bad time-wasting failure. I wish people would either supply instructiuons with Chirp or make it so that ist is a bit more obvious and user friendly! I will now try downloading the latest version and see if that helps. Unable to download the factory image from a new UV5R. I get the error "Incorrect model selected." CHIRP works fine on two other UV5R radios with the same FTDI USB cable, Windows XP, and daily build 20150325. Also tried builds 20150321 and 20150318. Hello to all. I just purchased the Wouxun KG-UV8D. The programming software that came with it is so very basic. A few friends of mine recommended CHIRP. So I downloaded it. It's much better to program with. When I went to upload the data to the radio, that function was unavailable (greyed out). I can download from the radio, just no upload. I tried CHIRP on my Kenwood TH-F6A and it worked fine. Any idea what may be causing this problem or when CHIRP will support the Wouxun KG series? Thank you

Hi All, I am a new user to Chirp and I am initially using it with an Icom IC 2200H (around 200 memories). Cable and com port all OK. Chirp talk to the radio. I am endeavouring to import a general CVS file of the local repeater list as published by the WIA (Wireless Institute of Australia) here in Australia. I have created an image file from the IC 2200H by ³downloading from the radio². No problems in doing that (works perfectly!). I save this image file for future reference, but that is an incidental comment. I leave the image file ³open² in Chirp. I then attempt to import the local WIA Repeater list into this image file. However, I receive a message that indicates ³UNKNOWN FILE FORMAT². (I have deleted all Repeaters from the WIA Listing that are not 2 metres, so as to keep the list below 200 repeaters, and so as not to compile a list (via the import function) that is incompatible with the IC 2200H (a 2 metre radio only) I guess my question is, how do I prepare the WIA Repeater list (a CVS file which I can see using Excel, of course) so its image matches the Chirp/IC2200H image, and will then presumably enable the import function to operate nicely. Hi, I've been using CHIRP to download/upload programming images to my BaoFeng BF8HP since I got it a few weeks ago. I use the BF8HP field selection in the radio upload/download window and haven't had any problems. I obviously use the most recent build and update with the most recent daily build, and again no problems. Personally I always download the programming image first, make changes, then save the changes and upload the programming. This way I know the link and software are working by downloading first, and this (maybe I'm wrong about this) way I'm not altering the radio first. Just some positive feedback. Recently here in Oz, there have been a number of Chinese radios use by Marine Rescue people, confiscated by ACMA officers claiming interference potential and the usual BS. ACMA in Oz is similar to FCC in the US. I notice my Wouxun complies with FCC part 15 but cannot find a similar statement in the Baofeng manual. I believe as amateurs (full calls) we are allowed to build our own gear so I assume we, the licensed operator, are responsible for complying with licensing requirements and are not limited to commercial, type approved, expensive equipment. I would assume Australian laws would be similar to US laws in this respect. How would this issue affect non Ham users, i.e. CB, Commercial, Civil Defence, Volunteer Fire & Rescue organisations etc? -- 73 Bob, *VK2BYF *

The code had been using the entire byte as an index into the TONES or DTCS_CODES array, and when the high order bit was set, the value was too high by 128, resulting an array bounds error. Fix is to alter MEM_FORMAT to separate the high order bit flags from the lower 7 bit tone and code fields. This also adds some error checking via a "try" block to catch any remaining array bounds errors (though none are expected). And it adds code which attempts to set those bit flags the way the radio would have set them, even though the flags seem to have no effect on the way the radio transmits or receives. I'm still running Daily Build 20130627, which still works fine for my two UV-5Rs. Because I wanted to play with the squelch settings and because I might want to program newer units than mine, I attempted to install recent daily builds. My first attempt was chirp-daily-20150306-installer.exe. Then, I tried chirp-daily-20150314-installer.exe. In both cases, they appear to run ad infinitum, but no Run or Install window ever appears. >From the Q&A page: How do I upgrade to a newer version of CHIRP? Nothing special is needed. Just download the newer version and install it. The install will replace the old version automatically. This applies to the daily builds as well. Did I choose the wrong file to install from? HI, I'm very happy to see chirp expanded to other models. I purchased the Boefeng for my husband when he got his license. However, I have a Yaseu FT-50R and see that the software doesn't support this model. can you assist me in anyway on being able to use the FT-50R with chirp. Can I set my HT on clone perhaps?? [Richard Cochran <ag6qr(a)sonic.net>] [ft2900] Fix issues entering channels via UI #2385 This patch fixes problems when entering memories to the FT-2900 via the CHIRP UI. The set_memory function was leaving "unknown" areas of the memory unset, which caused intermittent problems, depending on what had been in those fields before. Fix is to initialize all unknown fields to 0, mimicing what the radio would do if creating new channel via the radio's front panel. Also, we re-order the power levels to make the default "Hi", again to mimic the radio's front panel behavior.

Have been using CHIRP with several different Radios for two years and NO Issues. Just changed up some Repeaters in my VV-898 and now on those I added the Alpha NAME doesn't show up only the Channel number. The Freq's not changed remain the same and show the original alpha name, what am I doing or not doing. Steve - KA5SVR

After uploading my first template to my new BF-F8HP all of the memory channels are correct. CHIRP seems to have operated as expected. But there is no audio now on the radio. Not even squelch. It doesn't look like any setting would have disabled the audio. What could have caused this? Larry O. Booth

You did remove the data cable from the radio. Something I've done when hurried to test it, not remove the cable. Things have been going really well with my CHIRP bootable USB, and I've been able to program and update several radios over the last year or more. Now, not so good: - system boots from USB on my portable PC (running 64-bit Win7 Pro) and I get the usual desktop, but cannot run CHIRP — when I double click on the icon, I get the timer icon for a while and then nothing - thought maybe something went south on the laptop, so tried the same flash drive in my desktop (running 64-bit Win7 Home Premium), and got exactly the same result - CHIRP update operation in both systems seemed to work fine - thought maybe something went south with the 8 GB USB flash drive, so reformatted it and reloaded everything — same result on both systems - tried another flash drive (4 GB), loaded everything from scratch, and got same result on both systems - loaded daily build on laptop and it worked fine Any suggestions? I have a Baofeng BF-F8HP. I have tried to program it with Chirp.It will download from the radio if I select UV-5.but when I try to upload the new programming it tells me-"Error=unsupported firmware N5R323F8HP-1" or something to that effect.I downloaded the radio program from the radio first,then copied my groups programming file onto that and tried to upload,only to get that message.I have done this successfully on other radios.any help appreciated. Thank you.

[chirp_users] UV-5R V3+ download error

Tried “download from radio” on my Baofeng UV-5R V3+ and received error message “Radio refused to send block 0xlec0”. When the dialog box to clone radio came up for only a second and then the error message poped up. At the same time the radio went through the same sequence it does when it turns on, meaning the display goes solid and the backlight flashes and the WELCOME message comes up. I have tried everything I could find to do. My Device Manager says my cable is working properly. I have the right “old” driver, made sure the cable is seated completely, volume is turned up, I’m on clear channel (tried active channel also), windows smartscreen is turned off as will as auto update. Any one have any suggestions?

I was able to download the driver for my cable finally, downloaded Chirp to my Dell running Win 7 and was able to upload from my BF-F9 using the BF5 selection. I add all my data for download to the radio but keep receiving an error message stating that there is unsupported firmware incompatible. Could you please provide a fix for me, thanks for your time….

Well I finally got my BaoFeng UV-5 programmed with everyone's help here using Chirp. Works great and I have done it several times. Now using the same cable was trying to do the very same thing on a BF-888 radio. Same computer, same cable and same Chirp but I did change it to the correct Radio Model when doing so. When I do this the computer does not seem to see the radio and when I hit "OK" it goes to the "Cloning"screen and a 1/2 of a second later the "An error has occurred. No response from the radio" message pops up. Am using the same port, same everything with no luck. Any ideas? Thanks, Joe A

[chirp_users] Radio did not ack programming mode error in Linux; worked a few weeks ago!

This is very strange, I'm not sure what to make of it... I haven't programmed my Baofeng B5 in a few weeks, and today I wanted to add a few more channels to it, so I got out my cable, plugged it in, ran Chirp, try to send... Radio did not ack error immediately. Also tried to Download, same. My chirp version hasn't changed (Chirp 0.4.1; installed in November) and my radio hasn't changed. OS hasn't changed (Fedora 20, x64), although it's possible I've gotten a kernel update since the last time I programmed. Cable is plugged in all of the way, I've replugged it multiple times, different ports, etc. I haven't dropped the radio, the cable was curled up and put in a drawer for the last few weeks, etc. Very weird. Anyone have any guesses? I programmed it dozens of times screwing around when I first got it and never once had an issue. I always got the same error at the END of programming but it seemed fine. Now it happens immediately and does nothing. The adapter shows up on dev/ttyUSB0, I have write access to the device, etc. Radio is on unused channels, powered off and back on, etc. Here's the traceback if it's useful.. Does Mac OS 10.6.8 work with Chirp? The Mac does not download the blank from the transceiver. So, I'm stuck at the first step. Anyone else have this problem? A solution? [chirp_users] FM Broadcast channels on Wouxun?

Is it possible to program the FM broadcast receiver memories on the Wouxun KG-UV6x handhelds through CHIRP? I am programming them for emergency responders and it would be useful to have pre-programmed access to the stations which are commonly used for public announcements in disasters here. So far, if there is a way to do it in CHIRP, I have not figured it out.

Hello, just to intruduce myself: ham radio operator for more than 25 years, last years without activity (self-employed as communications-engineer...). Yesterday I received my Sainsonic AP510. Tried to configure it with my Mac (OS X 10.10.2, python installed from the link on chirp-homepage). Had success only once. Most of the time it crashes immediately after downloading settings from trx, maximum half a second after showing settings. (Today I tried the new daily built: same experience (no success until now). So at work I tried the windows machine (successfully did a firmware-update to the 20141215 version). Can change frequency-parameters (qrg, tone, power), but second tab is empty. Jim Thank you. Your last solution with clicking on properties allowed me to enter the frequencies and tones. But now all the channels can only be accessed in the B (lower) bank of channels. When I press the EXIT/AB button it will not lock on the A (upper) bank. So it looks like I somehow disabled the dual watch function. Could this have been something I did in Chirp? Thanks again. A quick way to make sure that a new entry or setting selection has been made fully is to click the [Refresh] button. If it doesn't stay, you didn't press enter or click onto another cell to complete the change. Another way, and it may be simpler for some is to click on the memory row that you want to edit, the choose "Properties" from the drop-down menu that appears. Then change the settings as required and click the [OK] button to accept the changes. Hello, Chirp opens and downloads from a Beofeng UV 82L, but when I try to enter any info in any field (frequency, tone, name, etc ) the previous entry reverts back to whatever was originally there. Can anyone help with this problem. There is also a frequency that keeps appearing ( 146.010, I think, when the newly programmed one disappears ). Had no problem when I originally programmed this radio last month. Thank you. Glenn

Hello all, I have an issue with Chirpinstalled on my Win7 Home Premium computer. In all cases after installation of several versions and daily updates I can not start Chirp, I receive only an error window "Error reporting is enabled" and when I click "OK" nothing happens. On my Win8.1 pro computer all is running well. Do you have any suggestion hów to help? 73! George OK2KG

Is there not a tried and true Prolific drivr from the files section of Chirp? That is unless the device is FTDI based. Not sure if there is a preference driver for those. Canes. As a bonus, this change improves interactivity, so --verbose will cause the name of the file to be printed as it is checked (rather than printing one long list before it started). You are correct to use UV-B5. Sadly the new Firmware versions of UV-B5/UV-B6 are not supported by Chirp. There is a patch that remedies this, but as far as I know it has not been added to any official Chirp build. You can use the official Boafeng SW to download the image, and then rename it to the name used by Chirp, import it to chirp, make the changes, save, rename back and upload via Boafeng SW. I hope that Chirp will soon add support for those newer UV-B5/B6 Firmware versions. It seems that the Radio changed its identity marker, and is no longer correctly identified by Chirp. The one line patch floating around seems to remedy the situation. (At least the newer UV-B5 is recognized and fully programmable) CU, Ricsi

This is causing a somewhat signifigant performance hit as the tree view is performing a linear search of its store attempting to prevent duplicate entries (see while loop in set_memory) As a result the duplicate call to prefill was having no effect other than forcing a lookup of the treestore and did not appear to have any other bearing on the application. Another seperate, but related, improvement would be to increase the overall performance of the linear search of the treestore. Bug #2369 [Zach Welch <zach(a)mandolincreekfarm.com>] Add chirp.logger module (#2347) This patch adds the chirp.logger module, using it in chirpc and chirpw. It adds a handful of optional command line arguments to control the new logging features. In addition, CHIRP_DEBUG, CHIRP_LOG, and CHIRP_LOG_LEVEL can be used to control the logging features from the environment. It also makes the version string reusable between the GUI and CLI, and it prints that string at the start of the log file (if in use). [K. Is there any place I can upload... say a "serial dump" file of communication between it and some propriety software (named SV83) ? I managed to create a serial sniffer cable, so if I have a place to upload it, then you guys could inspect and add support for it. Heck I think having a dedicated place to upload serial dumps would be great for reverse engineering efforts.

Hello to all. I’m very new to Chirp. I’ve installed the Python package and the daily build that supports my radio the Baofeng BF-F8HP. I’m using the BaoFeng FTDI Programming cable. A USB to serial port appears when I plug it in. When I try to download the radio’s memory, I get the error “Radio did not respond”. Chirp seems to run fine. Could anyone tell me of any procedure I’ve missed or has experience using OS X Yosemite with Baofeng HT’s? David Kickbusch

I'm using a few UV 5 R's on a commercial UHF repeater. The frequency is a bit congested. Here's the problem - The UV 5R seems to hold the squelch open for about 2 seconds after the repeater (and thus the tone) drops. Is there a timer that anyone has found that determines the time that the squelch is held open after the tone drops? This is most annoying to hear snippets of other companies transmissions - especially one digital repeater. Thanks for any input.

Thanks for the ad. Have been a CHIRP user (and donar) for a while now and no issues. Then had my desktop computer die and replaced it with a Win7 64 bit unit. Installed CHIRP and I thought everything went fine but when I tried to upload the new frequency list to the radio (a UV-5RA thats about a year old) it keeps telling me that "an error has occured. Radio did not respond" I have used this same cable and radio in the past with CHIRP with no issues so am guessing that its the computer or OS. Have tried both 0.4.1 and "chirp daily-20150218" found on the BaoFeng site, both with the same results. Ideas? Am volunteering in a ham event tonight and would love to have the radio as a backup for my older Kenwood "just in case".... Thx, Joe A KG7FDX Phoenix

Hi all, I am new in this so not an expert at all. Help will be greatly appreciated. I have two Baofeng BF-F8HP and was successful in modifying the operational range of them. I have extended the frequency range using the following parameters: VHF: 108.000 to 177.000 UHF: 385.000 to 570.000 I have successfully tested both radios to transmit and receive on the following range: VHF: 128.450 to 177.9975 UHF: 385.3725 to 570.4775 I still have to use my scanner to confirm that they are transmitting on that whole range, but the radios do communicate on it. I have used the 108.00 lower range on VHF to try receiving Air Band, but still have to confirm if I can receive on that range. One problem I have with CHIRP is that it does not allow me to add channels on that range which would be very useful to identify by name those frequencies (GROUND, ATIS, APPROACH, CLEARANCE etc.) CHIRP says those frequencies are beyond operational range. I can save those frequencies in memory on the radio interface but I cannot add a name to them. Is there a way to make CHIRP do this, or does it need this added as a new feature? Thanks! When trying to download I get the message: An error has occurred Could not configure port: (5, 'Input/output error') The environment is Ubuntu 14.04, Chirp daily -20150210, cable SCU-18 with power light on, HT in CLONE mode. The Radio box presents port choices /dev/ttyS0 thru /dev/ttyS31 and I have tried many of these but not all, and always received the same exact message. There were no USB possibilities presented. The message said nothing of permissions. I did check anyway and saw: n4lbl@eel:~$ groups n4lbl n4lbl : n4lbl adm dialout fax cdrom floppy tape audio dip video plugdev fuse scanner lpadmin netdev sambashare so that seems OK. The HT's internal code is ancient: from when I bought it in Nov. or Dec. '13. My intention was to back it up before upgrading the code. I've cloned-out succesfully some memories with CS-80-880 and cloned-in with chirp. This file cloned-in with chirp was saved and immediatly cloned-out on radio and have the same error. Hi all, Yesterday we merged a change to clean up the settings interface a bit. It's a relatively minor visual change, but it affected a lot of code, including every driver that has a settings interface. We expect it to all be fine, but given how many things were touched, it would be good to do some extra checking. Below is the list of drivers that were affected. Due to the nested nature of the settings editor tree view, labels in the tree generally become obscured because the pane is too small. This change addresses the issue by a) adding a horizontal paned window which allows the tree view to be manually resized while b) flattening the radio featrure radio settings group to return a single list of all top level radio settings groups. Hi Joe, Richard, List @Jim Many thanx for the workaround. It works. But it would be great to get the new firmware also supported in Chirp for up/downloading from/to radio. Would it be possible to have a checkmark to accept any identity if the radio type is set to UV-B5/B6? Eg. do not care what radio sends, and just go on? Also it would be great to check when a NACK comes back if it is the first byte of the test data. If yes, then the propability is very high, that everything is OK, and that the firmware simply does not accept test data! I will gladly test beta builds. PS: As mentioned earlier, in the mailinglist welcome message a beta download link is referenced, that gives a 404. @Richard I will gladly test compiled code. Did not receive anything to test yet.
