I just purchased some Baofeng UV-3R radios and am unable to connect to them with chirp using OSX, so looking for some help with troubleshooting. The error I get is the classic "Radio did not ACK first command". I have chirp working just fine with other chinese radios including BF-F8HP, BF-T1 and UV-9R. The BF-F8HP / UV-5R cable I have, and the UV-3R cable both appear to use the same Prolific chipset (the BF-T1 and UV-9R cables show up differently)... Under System Information / Hardware / USB: *BFF8-HP / UV-5R cable (two-pin)* USB-Serial Controller: Product ID: 0x2303 Vendor ID: 0x067b (Prolific Technology, Inc.) Version: 3.00 Speed: Up to 12 Mb/s Manufacturer: Prolific Technology Inc. But to my mind, given the chipset appears to be the same and I have the BF-F8HP cable working, I would have thought that the UV-3R cable would work as well? Any ideas for how else to troubleshoot this? Is there anything that's worth trying before I give up and order a different cable? (If not, recommendations for a reliable source for a cable for the UV-3R would be welcome.) Thanks, Matthew

Hello, I'm running into a slight bit of confusion and would like the easiest way to do the following. My cousin has to Baofeng radios, that I have program with MURS frequencies that he can use, since he is not yet a ham. I also have a lot of local public safety frequencies program into it that he scans, and of course have the transmit turned off on those. Here's what we have going on. At work they are using a different model Baofeng radios, supported by chirp. I would like to take one of his radios from work, read their frequencies and add them to his radio in the list below his current frequencies so he can use it at work. I have read about exporting to CSV and importing and it seems a little confusing. Even if I were to do this, I have read nothing about having a choice of what memory slots the important frequencies would go into, or if I have a choice like I normally do when I'm programming. Is there a simple way I can download the memories from their radios and just copy and paste them into his existing file without overwriting or losing what's already in his radio? Is it possible to open up two radio images, in two different tabs at one time using Chirp? I would think that copy and paste should work somehow but I want to make sure I know exactly how to do it rather than mess up the radios that I've set up for him that he really likes. By messing up I mean putting all the frequencies above the ones that are already in there and not at the end. He really needs these extra frequencies added to his current radios that I programmed for him. Yes, I did make an original image of both of his radios, and I do have the fully programmed images saved. The easiest way to do this, is what I'm looking for. If I can forgo exporting and importing, and just copy that would be ideal. Any assistance or help in this matter is greatly appreciated. Thanks, James

I have looked at the web site (FAQ/Wiki/etc) and have not found a definitive answer as to whether an FTM-3200DR is a supported rig. I did see one thread that was several years old but that did not answer my question. I have seen mention of a FTM-3200D but all the documentation I find on the Yaesu web site only refers to radios appended DR or DE. Need some help. Our church uses these for inter church communication. I have setup the first 20 or 30 ht's no problem. I made backup of the program image. We are in need of adding more RT21 to the flock. My problem is after programming the new ht's everything works etc the transmit audio is extremely low to not at all. I also noticed the image file loads back differently by dropping out data. I have changed to the latest Chirp level. And have two programming cables. Nothing changes. I use a working ht and when I download the image file it also is not the same as the orginal. I have also used 4 different laptops and a table computer. Most are running ein 10. I have another laptop running vista sw and the results are the same. Any ideas??

Hello I'm using chirp-daily-20200909 on both windows and linux (mint w/ ppa if that matters) and on the linux version I can find the Retevis RT95 (nor the anytone 778) in the "import from radio" menu. Hi. New user there, so I can't reply to the previous thread. I was able to get chirp running using flatpak, but some things seem funny, or might be helpful to others. Sentence wrapping on the message for how to install/setup flatpack caused me some initial errors. Instructions here: https://flatpak.org/setup/Ubuntu/ However, it seems that even after doing the remote-add, I have no repositories. $ flatpak remotes Name Options flathub system I assume there should be something listed there. Or maybe that's all there is - it doesn't show the URL or anything else? A search for "chirp" returned no results. So, I ended up just downloading the flatpak file from https://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/ And then installing it from my local storage flatpak install {download_path}/chirp-daily-20200909.flatpak When I go to the flathub website and search for chirp, it returns no results. This matches of course not being able to install directly. A search for "gimp" does return results, on both the website and the flatpak command line. Considering the discussion I've seen on the mailing list archives re. migration of chirp to Python3, and that I'm fed up with Ubuntu (multiple reasons), what distro would be a good one to consider for retaining full Python2 support for a while? Or is this a futile endeavour? (I'm currently pondering Arch, but might consider Gentoo.) Thanks to previous posters for getting me back running. I have been trying to figure out how to get CHIRP to run. I found Ticket # 7147 and reading the whole thing (way over my head) I ran some commands indicated however I have no idea how to read (let alone understand) the results. I tried looking up python-future package but was unable to find anything that was remotely clearly safe to solve the problem. Does the following make any sense to anyone? If so how do I correct the python-future unavailability warning? Are there any suggestions on where I can look for answers if not here? I am new to Ham radios and am currently unlicensed. Hopefully taking test this month I recently bought a Baofeng F8HP and data cable from BaoFengtech.com and other accessories I Tried installing CHIRP on my Mac OS Sierra Version 10.12.6 13" Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 1) Installed CHIRP MAC OS Unified Application as well as KK7DS_Python_Runtime_R10 The application downloaded and unzipped. When I clicked on icon I was asked to confirm to open and clicked ok, my screen "flashed" slightly and then nothing came up on the menu bar and nothing in dock I tried opening from download folder then moved it to Applications folder and still nothing. Then I tried deleting and reinstalling 3 or 4 times 2) I deleted that version and tried installing Mac Os LegacyAapplication When I opened this version the CHIRP Menus showed up in menu bar however non of the menu links worked 3) After many hours of research I Installed Homebrew, and Virtual COM Port Drivers for FTDI devices as well as opening Terminal and executed various commands suggested from the net and nothing seemed to work. I am not programming literate although I am able to follow instructions. I have tried every combination I could think of to install and run CHIRP If anyone is able to help me I would greatly appreciate it. I checked out FAQ's and Issues and bugs lists and all similar issues seem to revolve around the legacy version. Thanks Joe.

Hi everyone, Windows 10 computer I am trying to clone the Yaesu FT8900R (this is the first time) I use CHIRP and I follow the CHIRP instructions (same as in Yaesu manual) I turn on the radio, go to F6 "clone start", then push "set" Nothing happens...after a few seconds, I get error message stating it could not find the item location (com port). Tried several times on all four active ports. Checked "device manager" and the four ports are active and well Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated Joe

I'm a new user so don't kill me. I just got a Baofeng UV5-R and have a few questions about Chirp. On the settings tab on the left it has 6+Power-On Message 1 and 6+Power-On Message 2 and then it has Power-On Message 1 and Power-On Message 2 and then it has Power-On Message choice of full or message. What is what? Which is the message i see when I power on and what is the other one and what's the difference between Full or Message? I wanted to put an IF Found and my phone number in there but i guess it only allows 7 digits is that right? I'm programming this like a scanner so i'm most interested in Scanning. I'm still confused about the 2 frequencies on the display. if I'm scanning and then freq below has activity, they radio doesn't receive it.. so it's like why is it even there? Maybe i'm doing it wrong.

I can setup my channels on the computer and print out a screenshot of what I have done. Then I send the data to my radio and it is successful for everything but the DUPLEX settings of - or +. I have tripled checked what Chirp says I wrote to the radio and it doesn't match what I see when I look thru the MENU option of 25. For example, Channel 18 should be - and on my Chirp setting it says that...but when I check the radio MENU setting (manually) it shows +. The worst part is that if I change it manually...then it changes OTHER channels. It only seems to be a problem for the Duplex setting...the frequency remains ok, as does offsets. Also, I follow strict guidelines to turn the radio off and on and be sure it's on VFO mode when I activate CHIRP etc. Am I missing a setting to LOCK IN a DUPLEX - or + perhaps?? Sandy

Hi, I'm a relatively new user of Chirp. I like the software and I'm interested in contributing to porting it to Python3. I notice that there's a py3 branch that hasn't had any new commits since February. I spend some time trying to get that branch to run on my system without success, and I'm not sure if it's expected to work in either Python2 or Python3 at this point. [chirp_users] Enable the Settings Tab in CHIRP?

Hello, I've been looking at some of the CHIRP tutorials on YT, and I notice that some radios like the Baofeng UV5R have a settings tab where global radio options can be set. I've set up CHIRP to work with a Yaesu VX-120 (using the vx-170 menu option - only a keypad difference between the two models) and can download\upload without issue, but I was wondering if I should be seeing a settings tab on the left. Not all radios seems to have this tab. Is it an optional developer feature, or can it be enabled? Nothing in the user manuals on this unless I've missed it. Either way, I like the software. Thanks.

I'm running Linux Mint 20 and decided to try the flatpak version of Chirp for the first time. I downloaded and installed the .flatpak file from https://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/ which was 20200827 but when I ran Chirp it showed the version as 20200807 and said there is a later version available. On Wednesday my 2 BaoFeng UV 5R radios could download and upload to CHIRP. On Friday all I got was the following message: Radio Did Not Respond. I tried reloading the latest version of CHIRP, no change. I tried an earlier version of CHIRP, no change. I reloaded the latest version back, no change. Visually the radio's red light blinks then the LED display blinks then the error message shows up on CHIRP. Any suggestions? Thanks Chuck KJ7INT

All of the channels and settings on my Baofeng are the exact same ones that i want to program in to my new Leixen. Although Retevis RT24 seems to be supported by CHIRP I cannot connect to it. I get the message "Radio refused to enter programming mode 2". I am using software version " chirp-daily-20200807". If I use the original Retevis software I can read and write the device without a problem so I guess it should not be an issue with the USB-Serial driver. Does anybody have an idea what I do wrong here? Thanks, Michael

Hello, I downloaded chirp to my 2011 MacBook pro with OS El Capitan 10.11.6, chirp won't open. It just keeps crashing before it opens. I can not update my software because my Mac is too old, apple locked pre 2012 MacBook pro owners out. Is there anything I can do to make chirp work? Thanks, John

No I didn't download anything from UV 9R to Chirp but I reset the radio to default which most people say you do then reset it to English, so you say download the content to Chirp then put in what you need i/E Marine channel then it will upload afresh. can you tell me what radio settings if any I can use to program the RTS systems ( Bosvark ). I did get a software DV3400R but with this software all alteration must be done by hand. You can't cut, copy ,paste, export or import. Hi Robert, The gating factor is usually the radio. If none of the developers has one, or has access to one, that makes it very difficult to assess what's needed in the driver, and impossible to test any code that's written. I hope this helps, and doesn't confuse too much. I have tested this procedure on several of my systems. Hopefully I didn't skip something. You don't need to download Python 2.7 from the Python WEB page, or download the flatpak. Its in Focals,(20.04)Repositories. These are all terminal commands, don't use the quotes. "sudo apt install python2" will install 2.7 "ls -ls /usr/bin/python*" will list your versions of python installed. In my case 2.7 and 3.8 Add the Chirp repository: "sudo apt-add-repository ppa:dansmith/chirp-snapshots" Update: "sudo apt update" Next Step from The Chirp WEB page: "sudo apt-get install chirp-daily" Returns an error. "E: Unable to locate package chirp-daily" In terminal, open your file manager as sudo. I use Xubuntu, so I use "Sudo thunar" Your command will match your desktop. Using mousepad, or text editor, Edit, "/etc/apt/sources.list.d/dansmith-ubuntu-chirp-snapshots-focal.list" Change: "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/dansmith/chirp-snapshots/ubuntu focal main" to: "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/dansmith/chirp-snapshots/ubuntu bionic main" "sudo apt update" "sudo apt-get install chirp-daily" Another error: "The following packages have unmet dependencies" And a list of 4 of them. Hi I'm trying to install Chirp on ubuntu 20.04. I've added the PPA and updated my repos, but chirp is still unavailable. I tried changing the repo from "focal main" to "bionic main" just to see if it works, but that results in unresolvable dependencies. I have used CHIRP a few months ago to program my Yaesu FT-817ND with no problems. It no longer seems to work. I get the "Failed to communicate with radio: Radio did not ack block 0". This happens on upload. Download just causes the radio to show "Clone Mode Error". The cable works as I tested it with Maclogger and all functions worked. CHIRP also works with a Kenwood HT I tested. I have tried with Daily-20200107 that i was using last time and Daily-20200718 builds. Same error. Any ideas on what I can try next? Thanks K0MAS

I'm sure by now that you are aware that Linux Mint has gone to 20 and if I understand it right they have changed Pkg bases. Are there plans to upgrade chirp to work with this or should we hold off for now? Just curious as I still have one laptop that I have not upgraded for this reason. Gary: 1) Don't hijack a thread. The Abbree (a handhead) is not the same as a Baojie (mobile). 2) The Abbree looks like a Baofeng BF-A58 (144/440) or a BF-A58S (Tri-band). Try one of those. I was delighted to discover recently that Chirp now supports the Anytone 778-UV - I've had one for a while, and the "other" software available for it was rather limited. Anyway, having downloaded the latest daily build and attempted to read the radio, I'm getting an error message that includes the text : "Radio version not in allowed list for AnyTone-778UV: 000: 49 41 54 37 37 38 55 56 IAT778UV 008: 01 56 31 30 30 00 00 06 .V100..." It appears that Chirp is correctly interacting with the radio via the relevant com port, but doesn't like what the radio tells it. Since there doesn't seem to have been a rash of issues raised on this subject, I didn't want to raise it as a bug report till I'd made enquiries here. [chirp_users] Trouble Importing Channels

Hi All, Hoping someone here will be able to help. Ubuntu 16.43, and I'm trying to import a CSV file that I have used on my Baofengs, onto a new radio. It is a Wouxun KG UV 7D. I selected the 6D in the radio list in the Chirp radio selection, since when looking for the manual at the Wouxun site, I contacted them looking for the manual and they suggested I use the 6D manual, because the only difference is the power. So the 6D selection should work in Chirp, it would seem. My radio is the 2 & 6 meter model. One thing it says is that I have an error on line 74, and I looked at that with Libra Office and couldn't find any problem. But it leaves out a local repeater channel that normally goes right into a Baofeng with Chirp, and it also left out the 6 meter channels I put in. The channel numbers are there, but no values in the fields. If anyone has any ideas, or can look over my CSV file, I would much appreciate it. Thanks. Glenn

I and a few others are working on updating the chirp package in pkgsrc from the last release to a daily snapshot. That caused me to look at our package, and I see that it depends on py-gtk2, which in pkgsrc is marked as python 2.7 only. In general we're trying to have packages be able to build with python 3 when that's doable. I went to see if we were missing a py-gtk update that let it use python 3, and we have the last PyGTK release from upstream 2.24.0 that actally has source code. not sure how to reply to messages, not seen a forum like this before.. on in my Chirp i select radio BF-A58S is 'settings' and then 'other settings' i have VHF lower limit 136Mhz upper limit 174Mhz UHF lower limit 400mhz upper limit 520Mhz i can't see anything which mentions 200Mhz to 260Mhz ?? hence why i'm unsure that if i start adding 220Mhz channels and such like that when i try to upload it'll either deny them or brick the radio.. yes i have half a dozen already programmed in by the factory, but also all the 220 channels and a couple of UHF have a \ next to them where it's meant to say channel name.. [chirp_users] Update on ANYTone 7787uv no TX on UHF

Well, I've been pecking away at it and finally solved the mystery. At first it would seem to have been some kind of antenna issue so I switched over to my Arrow and had the same results....about 1 microsecond of TX and then gone. This all seemed to have started after I first loaded the memories using CHIRP. I didn't deliberately change any parameter that would stop TX on UHF but apparently there is one. I went to Function Memory 18 which allows the rig to be reset in one of two ways. The first way is a complete reset of every parameter and clearing the memories back to factory default. The second way will clear the parameters and leave the memories in tact. That was the way that finally let me start transmitting again on UHF. I am unable, at this time, to see these parameters but obviously something had to go back to factory default. hi hi Had to make a run to Huntington WV today and, of course, no one answered with whom I could try out the rig hi hi Maybe next time 73 John KI4RO

Hi everyone and I hope that all are healthy!! I have a Baofeng BF-F8HP radio I am having a minor problem with. I hope someone has seen this problem and found the correction for it. Baofeng BF-F8HP Comm channel 3 Use Chirp “Radio” – “Query Data Source” – “Repeater Book” – “RepeaterBook political query – “State (VA)” – “County “Cheaspeake” – “Band (2 meters) Once that is all input, I get this “error”………….No data found If I do the same but use “County (All)” I get 163 repeater listings. [chirp_users] Radioddity QB25

I purchased the QB25 with hopes of installing it in my pickup truck. I have two programming cables for it, the one that came with the radio and an FTDI cable that I purchased recently. My problem us error messages. Depending on the port configuration, I get an error message that states it failed to identify the radio, OR the it failed to enter the clone mode. I have tried other variants of this radio like the QTY7900. I have tried Windows 10 and an old laptop with Windows XP. Same error message on either operating system. Searching through requests I see others have experienced the same issue. I have clicked on the post for that issue but it doesn't do anything and I am at a loss as to what I need to do.
