Good Morning All: I am using a Yaesu VX6, iMac 21.5 and OS X Yosemite 10.10.5. and a cable from KawaMall. When I am attempting to download the contents from the my Yaesu VX6 into CHIRP while in the clone function ,I get an error message saying “an error has occurred” failed to communicate with the radio-no response from radio. I have been using chirp for years on my amateur band UV-3Rs but now I have received an Icom IC-A24 air band nav/com HT to replace my old air HT It looks like I will need a new USB-serial-3.5mm cable with TRS rather than TRRS perhaps a different pinout, ebay has them cheap The question is, can I even use chirp to program and clone the radio or does it use a different format than the amateur radios? Is there any risk trying to dump with chirp and the correct cable or do I need to run the official Icom software with WIne or virtualbox in Ubuntu?

All, I sent to developer as well but maybe ask here as well. I have a circa 2000 Icom IC-2800H with virtual box XP on OS X for CS2800.exe cloning software. I am sucessfully downloading to ubuntu KBOIQ on old MacBook Laptop (64 bit) and maybe older HP 1125nr Netbook. I have been able to get memory sized and names in browser with skip bits mapped. I also figured that the memory frequencies are really weird to see in browser as hex. portmon, ICF and screen capture of CS-2800 are completed. Also attempted same on Icom IC-V8 with CS-V8, portman but no success with Chirp detecting or fake outs. What I have learned is in code at end of message. What I haven't learned is how to display in Chirps UI or how to decipher Python flow. Where should I go from here ? Radio is NOT available for loan. Visits or local (01450, USA) mentors are welcome though. I am having a problem programming a couple of my local 70cm repeaters into my baofang UV5R. The problem is that I can access the repeater but although the repeater responds, as indicated by the green light being lit, I hear no audio. This is because R-CTCss is set to on. These two repeaters do not transmit a CTCss tone so I need to program R-CTCSS off on the radio but so far I have been unsuccessful in doing this! Manually loading the repeater into the radio it all works fine, just using a memory channel programmed with Chirp. It is just two repeaters that give probs. all others are OK. So question is how do I program the R-CTCss off for these two memory channels, but leave T-CTCss active of course. Martin G3ZQU.

Have received 3 UV-82 with firmware version N822411N822411. Downloaded from radio the programming template. Entered tones freqs and other info try to up load to radios the new img. image and it says radio model not detected, then I manually enter that it’s a UV-82 and still try to upload to radio and as soon as I do it says firmware not supported. I’ve loaded daily build from yesterday have done a recovery which I think is not need for the 82 and still no luck. Even went so far as to reload the driver program. Not sure what this has done now. I see Pofung is now Baofeng again on units I received. Any help appreciated.

Hello, All... I have the above radio and I'm trying to get CHIRP 0.3.1 on Linux to connect to the radio. I'm using an USB cable that shows up as ttyUSB0. None of the lights on the radio change (LED should blink, right?) and CHIRP errors that the radio is not responding. Any ideas where I should start looking? Take Care & 73 Charles KC6UFM

I have noticed that no matter how I program my Baofeng UV-5RA (CHIRP, Baofeng Software, manual programming from the radio's keyboard) the offset will reset to 000.000 and not keep the programmed offset of 000.600. THANKS Chirp developers! In the past few days, I have programmed 4 Baofeng UV5R radios of various vintage, a Kenwood TH-F6, a Yaesu VX-8GR, and Wouxun KG-UV8D and KG-UVD1P radios using Chirp latest daily build. (20150702). I found 4 generic programming cables in my programming box, all apparently Prolific chipped or clones, all worked. All the cable chips were identified as Prolific by Windows or by Linux. I have used Windows 7 on an Asus laptop, Windows 7 running in Virtual Box on a MacBook Pro, Kubuntu running in Virtual Box on the MacBook Pro, and Ubuntu 14.04 running on an HP Spirit 13 (I dumped Win 8) to do the programming. Chirp just worked on all of that hardware and different operating systems. I briefly tried to get Chirp going native on the MacBook Pro, but didn’t spend the time as Chirp was working great on the Mac in Virtual Box. Things I learned: plug in the programming cable after Chirp is running; and you have to find the correct port that the programming cable is on. Chirp just works!!! THANKS! THANKS!! THANKS!!! Does anybody know if it is likely to be possible to program options not available through the interface? I have a pair of Baofeng GT-3TP (basically the UV-5R). I want to run 9600 baud packet over them and have found that in the RDA1846 chip: http://www.uv3r.com/images/Schematic-Baofeng-UV5R.pdf there is an option to turn off filtering and pre/de-emphasis. Set register 58 to 023B My current option for doing this is to physically hack into the serial bus, insert a switching chip and use a raspberry pi to switch control away from the radio's onboard microcontroller chip to the raspberry pi serial GPIOs, program this option into the RDA1846 and then switch back control to the radio. Pretty heavy work for something that might be possible in software by programming the onboard controller (using CHIRP). Any guidance very much appreciated. You won't find many receivers that are "good enough" to handle that spacing with both frequencies being used so close together. If this is just an issue with it interfering with your personal scanning pleasure, that's just life; but IF those frequencies are both being used by the same agency, it was very poor planning on the part of whoever decided to use THOSE specific frequencies from among all the frequencies and separate licenses that the county holds. Those frequencies are on two completely different licenses, which were almost certainly originally meant to be two different agencies. I seem to now have CHIRP programming issues worked out finally!... but now I have another issue! While monitoring a service on 453.5625 I get bleed over from a service on 453.5500. I have entries set for NFN (narrow FM), Any ideas from anyone? Setting or bad radio?? Greetings all, I am a new Ham with a 40 year background in all things electronic. I just picked up new 3 BF-F8+ radios and ended up having to send one back (couldn't program via cable). The replacement came in with different firmware -GRRR!- and an odd/invalid/strange entry in the ABR menu. See attached pic -I hope it is permitted. I can change value to off through 10 using keypad. From that point the odd character goes away 'till the next time I program with Chip to any value above 10. Above 10 the odd character comes back. Chirp allows 0 to 24 as usual and programs without protest for any value 0 - 24 but cant get actual time to go past 10. Any time less than 10 is handled correctly as expected. I reset radio, changed language back to English and then tried to set backlight beyond 10 seconds with no success. Used CHIRP daily-20150702 and an earlier build with same results. Also, the radio type selected was the UV-5R. If the radio had a 'normal' display this would be less an issue but with the inverse display it pushes the usability close to the edge in a negative way! Has anyone seen this behavior? Have I missed a step? Should I consider this a defect and try AGAIN for an exchange? 73 Peter KC3FBB

Howdy! I naively purchased a 2015 Baofeng UV-6R as my first radio and have found chirp (Chirp? CHIRP? C.H.I.R.P.?) to not support the radio, which makes programming it from my Mac somewhat problematic. I've scoured the Internet and reached out to as many folks as I could find to see if they had it working, and it appears the 2015 release of the radio just doesn't work with chirp today. I'd like to help fix that. I was a (Java and PL/SQL) developer in a past life and can hack on Python code when I have to. Is there a guide available that describes how to start porting another radio, or is there a developer who is interested in working with me on this? I have a new BF-F8+ and I am having a problem I can't find an answer for. When attempting to program in a repeater with a 5Mhz "+" offset, the radio displays "+-" Any idea what I may be doing wrong? I'm still not sure what you mean. You do get to Device Manager via Control Panel and you can only see Com ports in the Device Manager. However, we are past that now and it is either the cable or the radio. At this point, maybe someone can help you with the radio you are trying to program. Does it have to be forced into a programming mode? Hi Jeremy One of the key parts is that you have to know 100% which serial port the radio is connected to. Chirp is not able to figure this out on it own. It has to 100% be sure that if the radio is on the USB RS232 adapter that is labeled as Com 14, that you use that port and that port only. Otherwise, you will get the failure you are seeing. Assuming you are using Windows, can you see Port 14 in Control Panel? If it isn't there, then Chirp won't be able to see it either. I would recommend that you watch control panel while plugging in and removing the USB adapter you are trying to use. This way you can confirm 100% that it is com 14. It should come and go from control panel. You may want to also clean up the previous 13 that you may or may not be using. I am on my 2nd day of trying to program this TYT TH-9800 plus. I installed the correct USB driver. Tried in CHIRP repeatedly with various ports and keep getting "Communication" error. (Failed to communicate with the radio: Unable to communicate with the radio) My radio is currently Port 14 - however this does not show up in the list in CHIRP. Even When I manually put it on port 3,4,5, no success. Same with TYT software, it seems like it ONLY wants port 3, however when I place on port 3, no success. Very frustrating. Hi, first of all, many thanks to Dan and the Developer for develop Chirp! The Idea and the result is great. So far as i can see, there is no specification given from Baofeng (and other) how the interface works. So you have to reenginer the data which comes over the serial port. I think, this take a lot of time to understand and to find a fitting memory structure. And, of course, there is a need for a given running software! Ok, my Problem is, i got a Pofung UV-6R, but it doesn work with Chirp. When I first put Yosemite on my late 2011 Macbook Pro, CHIRP continued to run fine to program my Baofeng UV-5R. Then for no apparent reason, since I didn't change anything, all I could get was "The radio did not respond." I am using the latest daily build of CHIRP. So then I went to the net to research Yosemite and drivers and found the Terminal command to allow unsigned drivers to load and the command to load the kext for the driver that had been working. This appeared to work for a while, I was able to download from radio and upload to radio, and I thought all was hunky dory. Then in a day or so, once again it stopped working. Nothing I try works, I have tried all the various drivers on miklor.com, although they don't even mention Yosemite, they stop at Mavericks. I have a programming cable from cheapham.com, which I assume is a generic chipset, since it cost all of $8. This cable works reliably on my 2006 white Macbook and my 2006 iMac, both running Snow Leopard, so I can program my Baofeng with CHIRO, but I sure would like to be able to use my Macbook Pro. Is a new more expensive "genuine" FTDI programming cable going to fix the problem on Yosemite? Which one from which vendor? Thanks! Pat Anderson KD7OAC

Hi, I'm new to the list... I was searching the list archives for this, but found no answer, so here it goes... The squelch levels for VHF/UHF on the settings > service settings options do work for the Baofeng UV-5R? My Baofeng is about 10uV in VHF and ~2.0uV on UHF, so VHF reception is hard, may be it has to do with the SQ level, it has 25 as SQL 0 for VHF and 19 on SQL 0 for UHF. For purposes of sharing, here is what I did to finally successfully Install the Prolific Driver on my W8.1 64bit machine. The solution was getting the correct "SER2PL64.SYS" file. Thanks to those here, a Microsoft MVP, and Prolific for their patient assistance. On my windows8 64b computer I started by installing the windows 8 driver PL2303_Prolific_DriverInstaller_v1.11.0.zip It's on the http://www.prolific.com.tw/US/CustomerLogin.aspx website (use guest/guest for user and password). (This direct prolific driver download link might work too) http://www.prolific.com.tw/admin/Technology/GetFile.ashx?fileID=232 IMPORTANT: My past problem was missing the right .SYS file in c:\windows\system32\drivers folder. Get the correct ser2pl64.sys file here: ftp://ftp.sdt.be/pub/SDT170%20Software/USB/USB%20driver%20Win7/ser2pl64.sys (this file, only 64000 bytes compaired to the original that was over 150K) Next I ran the Prolific_DriverInstaller_v1.11.0.exe (from the above zip). Next I copied the 64K ser2pl64.sys file into the Windows8 C:\Windows\System32\Drivers folder (overwrite the original although it may be prudent to first rename the original to ser2pl64.OLD) Then I plugged in my usb to serial cable, if the cable is not correctly recognized, remove the cable. Now right click the Prolific driver listed under the "Ports (Com&LPT)" listing in Device Manager and click "upgrade the driver"; next highlight "search the local machine" and pick Prolific_3_2_0_0 from the list. Re insert the USB cable. After many frustrating attempts, this finally worked for me. Mike K5HUM
