[chirp_users] Permissions for serial device under Linux

I am running Ubuntu 16.04 under crouton on an Asus Flip C302 Chromebook. For the most part this setup works great on most everything except access to the tty device. I have added myself to the dialout group, but I still need to manually do a chmod on /dev/ttyUSB0 in order to avoid the permissions error. It is not a big problem to do this, but I thought that if I were in the dialout group, that would allow me to use the serial port without the chmod. Can anybody tell me what might be going on? Have the Yaesu 857 w/ oem serial cable, then a good FTDI Serial/usb adapter. Running Linux Mint 19.3. Downloads and uploads from and to GT3TP Seem to go as expected but edits to NAME (ie text) are not saved on the radio screen. They are there on the file when downloaded again but not displayed on the radio. Any suggestions? Hugh VE7MDA Sent by magic

When a user programmed the radio manually and didn't explicitly select positive or negative offset, then the radio saved the fact that it was automatically pre-selected, and not the actual selection. The driver was able to read that, but didn't know what to do with it. Data from an FT-65R (for North America models) and a FT-4XE (for European models) was obtained, and a table built from it. Code to determine the correct value for "duplex" (0 for +, or 2 for -, instead of 5 for auto) has been added. Now, instead of saving "auto", the image will be saved with the correct selection for duplex (something Yaesu should have done in the first place). Mentioned in #6677.

I am trying to programme PMR446 frequencies to a Puxing PX777 using CHIRP daily build 20200213 and receiving this error message: "Error setting memory: Frequency requires 6.25KHz step". I can see the 6.25 support is missing from the driver file in the source but 6.25 steps are supported by the radio. I was able to edit the img file to add the correct frequencies and upload to the radio. Mark Eisner

I'm trying to connect to a UV-5R using a USB cable that was bought some time (maybe 5-10 years) ago, using chirpw on ubuntu 16.04. The tty port is found when I plug it in: $ dmesg | grep tty [ 7527.188154] usb 1-2: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0 [ 7548.490452] pl2303 ttyUSB0: pl2303 converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0 $ la /dev/ttyU* crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 188, 0 Feb 17 13:49 /dev/ttyUSB0 When I start chirpw and try to download from radio, the error is not consistent, it depends on whether I've tried it before or not. Sometimes I get the error: [Errno 16] could not open port /dev/ttyUSB0: [Errno 16] Device or resource busy: '/dev/ttyUSB0' and /dev/ttyUSB0 disappears. Another time after I unplugged and replugged the USB cable and restarted chirpw, /dev/ttyUSB0 reappears and when I try to download from radio I get: [Errno 5] could not open port /dev/ttyUSB0: [Errno 5] Input/output error: '/dev/ttyUSB0' Any advice on how to troubleshoot this? [chirp_users] Uploading to IC-2300H

I just got a new IC-2300H, and have been trying to program it with CHIRP without success. I downloaded from the radio successfully, and then tried to upload the same file to the radio. The upload starts, and I see activity on the meter indicating data being received by the radio, When it appears that CHIRP has finished the upload, the radio remains in "CL IN" mode. I turn the radio off, disconnect the programming cable, and then turn the radio back on. On startup, the radio shows CLEAR on the display, and the radio appears to have reset. So, it appears that the upload has failed, and the radio has detected that and is resetting. Has anyone seen this behavior? Am I doing something wrong? I'm doing this on a MacBook Pro with macOS Catalina 10.15.2 >From the debug log, I see that CHIRP is running with Python 2.7.16 - should it be using Python 3.x instead? I installed the version mentioned in the subject today, and was able to successfully read my Icom ID-51 Plus. I want to replace one of the values in the Your Call field on the D-STAR tab, but I'm not getting my new values to stick in the field. * I click on the D-STAR tab on the left, and I have values in the Your Callsign column. * I click on an existing value so that I can edit it. * I Cut, delete, or backspace out the value in the field I've selected. * I add my new value. * I click on another row or tab out of the field to get out of the one I've just changed. * I do a File/Save or File/Save As to save the changes. * I Move from the D-STAR to other tabs and back to D-STAR to verify that I still see my new value. * I close the file and reopen it * I see the original value in the field that I changed. To confirm that I'm really saving the file I changed something in the Memories tab before I saved. That change sticks, but the one in D-STAR does not. I also tried writing the data back to the radio after saving, but the radio has the old value. And, I tried putting the new value in a Your Callsign row that is already blank. It seems it is not stressed enough that you must, VERY FIRST THING, download an image of your radio and save it, and lock it down. Use it as a template for everything moving forward. Hi, I'm wondering what if any benefits there would be to upgrading Chirp software, if one's radio is already one of the options to choose from? I would think that the only benefits would be if the radio you wish to program has not yet been an option, and it was recently added to the selection. I guess I don't typically read the list of changes added to Chirp, so perhaps I'm missing the obvious. I sometimes think that if it ain't broke, don't fix it, so I typically don't update my chirp, but when I install a new Live Linux, I typically install a new build. Just wondering when noticing that someone updated their chirp, and now it does not work for them. Glenn

|Hello, | |I am using a FTDI USB Cable from Valley Enterprises to connect my Macbook Pro to an Yaesu FT-60R. It worked great initially, but since upgrading to the latest CHIRP build, I have been unable to program my FT-60R or even begin by downloading the channel image from the radio. I downloaded and reinstalled KK7DS_Python_Runtime_R10.pkg, FTDIUSBSerialDriver_v2_4_2, and |chirp-unified-daily-20200207 <https://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/chirp-unified-daily-202…>. I followed the procedures for downloading the memory for my radio and received a message saying: /**//*A error has occurred*//////*Failed to communicate with radio*//////*Reading block 0 was short (62) */Can anyone help me get this to work. [chirp_users] Missing USB connectivity

I updated to the latest build and one of the connectivity choices seems to have disappeared. The only option I can get is this: /dev/cu.Bluetooth-Incoming-Port I'm using the cable supplied by my radio manufacturer. Everything worked with all my radios before the upgrade. Should I try and revert to an earlier build or is there another solution? Any help is greatly appreciated. Tim Duffy

The proposed reorganization implements one more interstitial layer of inheritance to support the sub families of FT-4 (containing the FT-4X and FT-4V) and FT-65 (containing FT-65 and FT-25). Also, some variable assignments have been moved from the individual radio classes to the SCU-35 base class and to the interstitial classes named above. This change also adds the infrastructure for adding European or Asian models, and as such prepare for addressing a number of currently open issues (6.25kHz tune step issues on EU models, frequency limitations; see #6619, #6651, #6677, #6761, #6869). It will also make it easier for a few additional fixes for issues which were found during my work on this driver (#7601, #7603, #7605). I will submit these fixes in additional patches. Fixes: #7615

I have a TYT TH-UV88 coming to me in a couple days and see that it's not supported by chirp. The seller's website says that it is essentially a 'ruggedized' Baofeng UV-5r. Has has anyone found a workaround for the TYT? Thanks in advance, Tim Duffy

Now that we are on the subject of Image files... I was just programming a brand new Retevis RT3 GPS (TYT MD-380 G) and somehow it bricked up. As I had saved the "fresh new out of the box" Image file I simply resent it to the radio and...reset the radio to Factory specs in mere seconds. BTW this is the only Reset procedure for all DMR radios, no pressing this and that button nor any Menu settings. Still it also works on any radio regardless. Now you know why I cannot emphasize enough saving the original Factory Image file. If by chance you never had one, you can also use the stock blank file from the original Factory (CPS) software and send it to the radio. Then of course, save and label it. Program with CHIRP afterwards and again, always remember to save your new files. If you have to do a Firmware Update, first download the correct software from the Manufactures' Website and check for installation instructions on YouTube. This rarely will you find on the OEM Website or in your Owner's Manual. And again, save this new Image file and label it. There are some Manufacturers' that do not supply any OEM programming software. Sadly, Yaesu comes to mind. Then just simply use the CHIRP or RT Systems software Image file you created. Lot's of talk about the "Image" .img file. I'd like to get clear on this. The image file is NOT a complete picture of the software on your radio, correct? It is simply a backup of what Chirp can edit (change from default). So downloading from your "out of the box" radio and saving an image file is only to restore the Chirp editable menu settings and the memories back to the settings that came from the factory. As I understand it, Chirp can however upload bad data to the radio, (caused by erroneous user input) that is outside the range of the particular field item it was entered into, and can brick or lock the radio. This image file can fix this, and this only. Do I understand what Chirp image files are? Dennis M. To start with there are many variations of this popular radio. Check the model number first and go from there. Do NOT ever try to program this radio with the wrong variation programming software. If it is in fact the basic "bare-bones" Baofeng UV-5R, there are 2 variations, Old and New. This can be checked easily. You will have to perform a Firmware test on the radio. Even if it is "new" it may be in fact old stock lying around for years or an old radio. Go to Miklor to check on the radio's firmware version before you proceed. This is very important. The wrong software will brick up the radio. https://www.miklor.com/uv5r/UV5R-FWRelease.php Then you can proceed to program the radio. Like all radios, you must first get an "Image" file from the radio, and then you can program it as you please. Also, this "Image" file will be needed to reset the radio should it ever "Brick" up on you. Just Factory reset the radio and resend this Image file to the radio and all should be okay. In other words you resurrected the dead. NEVER should you buy a radio, take it out of the box and start playing with it. This probably will mess it up internally. ALWAYS first get that "Image" file and THEN program it. This will save you a lot of grief later if the radio acts up. BTW, I have worked commercially on many radios over the past 40 years, mainly Midlands & Motorolas and cannot overemphasize the importance of saving this "Image" file. It is particular to that radio alone only and not the one sitting next to it. Also, if perhaps you have several of the same model radio, save the "Image" file labelled with its' last 4 digits serial number, e.g.: UV5R_XXXX1234.img Then you will know it came from that particular radio. This believe me will save your radio from being a "Brick" or cute-looking paperweight. Note all these recommendations work with all radio Models & Makes, Amateur & Commercial. Kenneth Strom VA3KRS P.S. Cheers to the over-worked Staff at CHIRP who do a tireless job at writing these endless programming files out. Everyday it seems to be a new radio and new model out, mostly tireless variations of one or the other. Regarding DMR radios, most if not all models have very individual programming issues which is why you never see any common software. Even RT Systems keeps postponing any DMR releases due to this. Very few models can even import CSV files, so all mostly are manual programming and DO NOT make any slight errors or the radio simply does not work. Make sure you download the correct Factory programming software for the radio, any Firmware updates, cable USB drivers before you even start playing with its' buttons. If by accident you do then you will have to do a Factory reset before you can even save the Image file. A simple Factory Reset will cure some evils, however that Image file will save that radio. Have a great 2020 to CHIRP and all your Subscribers.

A radio "Image" file is the file you get when download from any radio. You should always download this Image file from every new radio before you play with it. An older radio, say you just bought you should always first read the Owner's manual and do a complete "Factory Reset" before downloading and saving this file. This will remove the previous owner's settings. Label it so and then go ahead write out your new file from it. Go ahead and "send to radio" again saving the new file renaming it as a new filename your choice. You will have now your original Factory Image file for backup and of course, your new frequencies file which you can pull up at will: edit/add/remove frequencies, etc.. Never lose that original Factory Image file. Radios have many Settings, most are fine left alone Factory default. The more complex radios such as DMR/DStar/C4FM/P25/NXDN have many more settings that have to be altered to work specific repeaters, Groups even to make the radio work at all. If you are not sure what a specific setting is, look it up first in the Owner's manual and/or the Internet before you change it. A great way to learn the more Advanced Technical sides of all radios. I have been having trouble with getting my 2730 to accept an upload to the radio from CHIRP. I can download just fine, but when uploading back to the radio it hangs, and does a full reset of the radio. I am using a MacBook Air running 10.14.6 . On older uv-5r the default range for vhf was 136-174. Now some show 130-179! Does older models support shorter range or is it just different default settings and all support 130-179(or more?)

John, et alia: Well, I do understand Chirp not supporting DMR radios. I mean, obviously it could but if it does not, so be it. However, your comment about DM-5R radios using a different Baofeng cable is quite interesting! How can I tell (other than just seeing it does not read the radio) if a potential Beofeng cable is the proper one for a DM-5R (say I see it at a hamfest)? I am new to Chirp. My radio, a Jetstream JT-270MH, has the capability of specifying both a tone encode (for keying a repeater) and a tone decode (for validating that transmissions received) are from the correct repeater. I had manually entered these into the radio, and it was working correctly. Then I introduced Chirp into the picture. Chirp has columns for both Tone and ToneSql. I have been unable to get the correct tone to show in both columns. Generally, I see a value in the Tone column combined with 'Tone' in the Tone Mode column. Alternatively, I see a value in the ToneSql column and 'TSQL' in the Tone Mode column. Is this the correct display, and if so which one tells me that Chirp is programming the tone for transmissions in both directions ? Note that I can open the memory line in a Properties window, set both Tone and ToneSql to the same value, but they do not stick when clicking OK. Also note that I have opened bug # 7475 concerning the precise radio profile used to clone this data, and issues encountered, so there could be a connection, but seems unlikely to me.

"At the moment"... I have some sympathy with Prolific, and FTDI who also have had their chip's faked. I personally have seen one chip marked up as FTDI, but appeared to Windows as a Prolific chip! The seller did the right thing, at their expense. I Feel sorry for them too. It is I suspect, only a matter of time, before one Linux distro or other also detects and blocks the use of such "fake" chips. After that, all the others will probably do so too. I also have sympathy for people who bought a "product" unknowingly with a fake chip in it. "The Product" manufacturer should make things good, but that rarely if ever happens. Too many people loose out to the counterfeiters in these cases. 73. Dave G8KBV. First I'd like to say, what an awesome, helpful group, Does anyone have any experience with the BAOFENG UV-5R8W? I Just got one from ABBREE through Amazon. Has anyone had success with any type of software for programing? This is supposedly a three power model. I have tried a few models on CHIRP, the included BAOFENG software and attempted a download from the ABBREE website, all with what I would call negative results. It was a package deal with an included Baofeng cable (Prolific USP) that that Windows 10 said was working. Any help would be appreciated, especially knowing if there is a model I can select on CHIRP that has worked for others. Best Regards, Troy Hunter (Newly licensed)

Has anything happened with the ID-5100A? Sure would be nice to be able to use chirp with it. My offer is still open to lend the radio to someone if they need a radio to work with, or I can guinea pig, for you but sure would be nice to be able to at least pull the memory chip and modify it under Chirp.
