Im using the mac OX. what I did is that I bought the rtsystems software with the USB 29A cable. I don't want to use windows. my question is can I still use that cable with chirp on the mac system(remember its not the opc-478 cable) I keep getting a error message Can't find the radio can you help thanks kerry n1urt

Dan, here is some additional information for the programming cable guide. For the Baofeng UV-3R is a USB cable available with a prolific chip. Unfortunately the latest driver from prolific does not work with this cable. You have to use a weird old driver used for GPS equipment in the past (PL2303_Prolific_GPS_AllInOne_1013.exe). It does not work with Mac OS X, don't know about Linux. for this reason I replaced the interface with a SparkFun FTDI Breakout board (http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9716). This one works like a charm. Furthermore I also can program my BF-U3 using Windows 7. The old cable could only be used with Windows XP. I removed the cable from the prolific board and soldered it to pin headers which fit in the header connecter of the SparkFun board. For what its worth: black to ground, green to tx, red to rx. kindly, Gerrit.

I get persistent failure to write to radio on an FT-60 with Chirp 0.1.12 on Ubuntu 11.04. It read from the radio OK, but I cannot write back either immediately or after exiting chirp and loading a saved .IMG file. Additionally, I get an IndexError in attempting to use Export from chirp. Procedure: Turn on FT-60 with Moni pressed, select menu item F8 Clone, Depress Moni until RX appears, then do Upload to Radio from Chirp. Below is stdout. I don't know if it does or not. Unfortunately I've misplaced the CD (I just downloaded the drivers from their site instead), or I would check. 409Shop didn't have them on their site, but you should be able to get the driver from the Prolific website. I have installed the KK7DS_Python_Runtime_R5, Chirp 0.1.12, KawaMall USBSerial cable with Prolific PL2303 drivers, and am trying to program a Yaesu FT8800R. When I can verify that that my usbserial devices in connected through system profiler. When I connect the radio and open Chirp I select the usbserial device and start a download. The radio immediately quits with an error and Chirp reports 'An error occurred' 'ord() expected a character, but string of length 0 found'. How can I start to debug this error?

See this link for building a custom VX-8 cable: http://users.tpg.com.au/vk4go1/vx8-2.htm Note: you can buy just the connector with a cable on it for the VX-8 from RT Systems for $8. You still need something to get 0-3.3V. If you have multiple radios I would get one FTDI serial adapter and wire different ends. You could use the 6 pin FTDI cable. See TTL-232R-3V3 or TTL-232R-5V depending on whether you need 3.3V or 5V. http://www.ftdichip.com/Products/Cables/USBTTLSerial.htm http://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Documents/DataSheets/Cables/DS_TTL-232R_CAB… You can get that cable as well as some other good FTDI usb serial breakout boards from some of the electronics DIY places like Adafruit, Sparkfun, Seeedstudio, etc. https://www.adafruit.com/products/70 Or https://www.adafruit.com/products/284 Or http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9873 If you are doing other things with micro-controllers, wireless router hacking, you will probably wind up with a few of these in your toolbox anyway as many embedded devices have a 3.3V or 5V serial console buried in there somewhere.

I downloaded the .1.1.12 .zip file for MacOS. After Extraction when I run the .App it prompts about being first time run and do I want to download. Immediately after clicking 'OK' it gives an error saying "unable to fetch CHIRP 0.1.12". Is there a way to manually download the full App?

Dan I tried to set the FM Narrow option on the FT-8800, the mode only seems to give me options for FM & AM. Using other software I have options of FM, FMN, and AM. We are stating to go NarrowBand FM here in the DFW area to attempt to free up some frequencies for more repeaters. What do you need to add this mode ? Would a set of files similar to the ft-60 files work ? one for FM , one for Am and one for NFM ? Allan R. Batteiger WB5QNG

[chirp_users] SOLVED: Problems under Ubuntu 11.10?

This is my last thread butchery for the day, promise! I found out what the "problem" is, if there really is one. Its more like user error, certainly not a problem with Chirp its self. The "problem" is the Unity interface under Ubuntu. The menu bar is taken away from the app window, and stuck up at the top of the screen but kept invisible until mouseover. When Chirp starts up, it is not full screen and has nothing to display. However, if the user moves the mouse to the top of the screen, the menu bar appears and the app is quite useable. The most intuitive way around this is simply to maximise Chirp - the top of its window then sits below the menu bar and everything feels reasonably good! Chirp seems to be programming my UV-3R very nicely indeed - I'm over the moon that I can have the same memories in my 3R and my VX-6 with ease! Unity is pretty, but it does have its usability problems from time to time, hi! Thanks and 73, Dave M0MYA.

I meant that CHIRP should be setting the flag any time it changes a memory. No change to this functionality was intended, nor do I think any was really made. CHIRP would inherit the flag already set in the memory if it didn't set it. Looking at the code, both the 8800 and 8900 should be setting the flag to display the alpha tag. Hi all, I need someone to send me a couple of FT-60R images with a single change made. This is so I can fix something in the driver. Since I don't have one here, I could use the help. I need the person to: 1. Download an image of the radio 2. Toggle the "mem name/frequency" setting on one channel (i.e. change it from either showing the memory to showing the frequency, or vice-versa) 3. Download another image of the radio 4. I'm trying to get Chirp going under Ubuntu 11.10 in order to program my Baofeng UV-3R. I'm a reasonably experienced linux user of a few years now, so I'm not afraid to tinker, but I can't seem to get chirp going. All extracted and tried running from a console. It fires up, but only gives me a blank window. It can be closed from the window bar, with nothing spat out on the console. Hello to the Group and thanks for this neat software which I found referenced on the Baofeng UV3R Yahoo Group. I bought the radio today at a hamfest and was trying to come up with a way to utilize the frequency lists I have for a Wouxun KGUVD1P when I discovered Chirp. So I downloaded the latest stable version and used it to download my Wouxun into a radio-specific image file. One thing I noticed was that even though I have receive tone set to OFF in the Wouxun, the download in Chirp shows code 23. Is that the same as OFF? Next, since the Baofeng does not support names, I was wanting to make the Wouxun list into a series of shorter lists for the Baofeng by deleting entries before uploading to the Baofeng. I opened the Baofeng and imported the Wouxun list, but when I highlighted multiple lines with click, shift-click and deleted them the delete did not go as it should. It looked like Chirp only deleted the odd entries and left the even ones highlighted. After pressing delete again on the remaining highlighted entries, some of the "deleted" entries seemed to come back. Is multiple line delete not supported, or am I doing something wrong? Dan I just programmed a FT-8800 and I have some interesting results. I tried to make channels as P (preferred for scanning) since the list I imported has quite a number of repeaters and simplex freq. I also set the scn.msm to msm. and scan mode to msm However I am still scanning all memories! I downloaded the radio using Bob Freeth software and discovered that the Preffered bits are set for Hyper Memory 2 mostly correct, Hyper Memory 1 mostly wrong ( missing quit a few, some random ones set). the other hyper memories are not set at all. I have attached before and after files. The ones that do not say new are the one where I imported my radio, then the CSV file, marked the channels as pref. The one with new in the name were done by reading the radios using bob Freeth's software, correcting the issues, writing them back out to the radio and testing them, then reading them back in using chirp. This should give you two set of files in your format to compare the differences. Allan WB5QNG

Anyone else have a problem saving a Jetstream file? I DL my 220 radio, modify and then try to save. It shows as a img file but if i open it there is nothing there but the default. what am I missing? dan -- If I am tired now why do I need to RETIRE later???

I notice that the program saves "debug.log" in the program directory (default in "Program Files\CHIRP"). But Windows Seven UAC forbids saving of user (runtime) data in the Program Files tree. Win7 UAC advices to save user data in %APPDATA% or %LOCALAPPDATA% directories (ex. "C:\Users\[username]\AppData\" + "Roaming\" or "Local\" + "[program name]\"). Could author change the path of saving user data?

I have http://d-rats.com/yum/f11/ installed as a repository. I tried adding http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/repository to the openSUSE repository list, but it failed. There was an error in the repository initialization. Error refreshing service chirp (http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/repository): Parse error: repoindex.xml[122] Entity 'copy' not defined Is there another option? ===== The reason I ask is that chirp fails to install under openSUSE 11.4 software manager yast2. It complains that "nothing provides pyserial needed by chirp-0.1.1.12-1.noarch " even though I have the latest python-serial offered by yast2 (2.5-3.3). TIA, Andy

Hi all, As promised, I just posted the 0.1.12 release. I did so on the new website software I have been testing. Hopefully the result is a cleaner interface that brings together the bug/feature tracking as well as the main site content. It will also allow some willing volunteers to help write some documentation more easily. Please note that you must now create an account to file a bug. This requirement is intended to help reduce the amount of spam that gets filed on the system, and more specifically, the (large) number of false positives generated by the _dumb_ anti-spam module. I'm sure there will be some bumps in the road (and missing information) with the new website, so please just let me know if something is missing or broken and I'll fix it. Version 0.1.12 brings support for several new radios, including: - Alinco DJ-596T - Baofeng UV-3R - Kenwood TH-K2 - Kenwood TM-271A - Puxing PX-2R - Puxing PX-777 - Yaesu FT-2800M - Yaesu FT-60R The release also includes the usual raft of bug fixes and several new features. I downloaded v0.1.12 yesterday (this is the first time I've tried to use CHIRP) to try to back up and edit the memories in my Puxing PX-2R after some frustration with the Puxing software (it crashed after I had hand entered a number of entries). CHIRP connects to the unit and downloads the data, but everything is wrong. It looks like some sort of 'off by one' error, as the channel name has the first letter chopped and the frequencies are wrong, the tones are wrong, etc. For example, in channel 1 I have the settings for a local UHF repeater: * Freq: 442.950MHz * Receive Tone: None * Transmit Tone: 110.9 * Offset: +5MHz * Name: N5SVZ * Width: narrow * Power: high * Step: 12.5Khz Here's what is in the chirp file that I saved from the radio: <memory location="1"> <shortName>5SVZ0</shortName> <longName>5SVZ0</longName> <frequency units="MHz">442.908000</frequency> <squelch id="rtone" type="repeater"> <tone>88.5</tone> </squelch> <squelch id="ctone" type="ctcss"> <tone>88.5</tone> </squelch> <squelch id="dtcs" type="dtcs"> <code>503</code> <polarity>NR</polarity> </squelch> <squelchSetting>dtcs</squelchSetting> <duplex>none</duplex> <offset units="MHz">447.908100</offset> <mode>NFM</mode> <tuningStep units="kHz">5.00000</tuningStep> </memory> I have not used previous versions, so I can't say whether this is an issue with the new build or with my radio.
