[chirp_users] Chirp and FT-7900 problem

Hi, I've download chirp and used it to program an Icom ic-2100h I now want to program a Yaesu FT-7900. I bought the USB cable from Kawa but am having a problem. If I plug in the cable into the data port the radio goes into tx until I plug in the USB then it goes to rx. But when I try to download the radio's content I get and error message that says "Failed to read header (0)" What am I doing wrong? Thanks, John K4AG

Hi Marco, Here is the scan of my 817ND. I can get Chirp to log with what Dan sent me: CHIRP_DEBUG=y ./chirpw 2>&1 | tee debug.log I used these instructions: Could you please run in linux the attached script and send me the output: - copy the file to your chirp-devel directory in the chirp subdir (the same where the ft817.py file is) - cd to that dir - prepare the radio for the clone operation - run it with python./dump817nd.py /dev/ttyUSB1 2>&1 >/tmp/817dump - start radio clone tx wait for the clone to complete, the radio should complain "as usual" and the program should take a few seconds to finish after the actual data transfer is ended. Send the generated /tmp/817dump file. Please send also an image of the white label on the radio (the one with model, serial number etc): we have to find not only the protocol details but also a way to recognize the various radio sub models. ___________________________________________________________________________ I received the dump817nd.py file, stuck it in the same directory where ft817.py is located (chirp-daily-01232012/chirp and then used python./dump817nd.py /dev/ttyUSB1 2>&1 >/tmp/817dump While the rig is in clone mode. I had the radio send the memory contents to chirp and I did get a dumpfile I've attached. I apologize as I'm not a programmer. I guess that's a commandline level task. Actually, when the task was done, the 817ND flashed Error again on the screen. Boy, I don't know what you can make of that file. Took me awhile to figure out what I had to do but I think this is what was desired. Here is the log file and the first portion is a read from the 817ND. Again, once the read is successfully carried out the ND flashes ERROR but the data is read into the program correctly on the computer screen. I then did a write and the ND just sits there and doesn't give in indication whether or not with cloning/write operation was a success. This time I used a 9 pin serial cable that I paired with a USB/serial converter. I'll fire up FT-817 Commander and restore it back. Dan, When I attempt to start Chirp, I get the following error. Error Msg: The logfile 'C:\Program Files (x86)\CHIRP\chirpw.exe.log' could not be opened: (Errno 13) Permission denied: 'C:\\Program Files (x86)\\CHIRP\\chirpw.exe.log' I uninstalled Chirp and then reinstalled using chirp-daily-01212012-installer.exe and I still get this error. There is not chirpw.exe.log file, however, I do find the chirpw.exe file. Thanks & 73 de KK4DBR Ron

[chirp_users] USB<--> RS-232 cables

All the programming cable discussions prompted me to pass this tip someone else gave me along: On the recommendation of someone I met at the D-RATS booth in Dayton this year, I've made several programming cables using these devices: http://www.ftdichip.com/Products/Cables/USBRS232.htm They terminate to bare wires so you can put whatever connector you need on the end. It's also easy to slip a copper braid over the wire for shielding if that is required. I've had no issues using them on Windows or Linux. Mouser sells them: http://www.mouser.com/Search/m_ProductDetail.aspx?FTDI/USB-RS232-WE-1800-BT… This model is RS-232, but they have them for TTL an RS-422 as well. I'm using them for radio programming and D-RATS data with my IC-2820, IC92 and ID-880, and for radio CAT/PTT/CW keying with my IC-706 and K2 HF radios. The '706 CAT cable is connected homebrewed CIV circuit covered with black heat shrink tubing. It makes a nice, compact cable. The '92AD requires the addition of a DB9 connector to mate with the ICOM radio cable unless you're willing to sacrifice it and cut it's DB9 off. Mike Heitmann, N0SO

I have a problem retrieving (re-opening) files saved in CHIRP format: "error: unable to open schema". Is there a bug or my config error? I have got three radios I want to keep aligned in memories: - IC2820E - ICE92D - TH-D72E The only way I have is to save memories in CSV files, and separated memories for FM and DV channels. Dave, Larry, I had similar problems with my UV-3R programming cable which also uses the pl2303 chip. I replaced it with a ftdi interface, it works great now. Not sure if its permissible to ask a question here. If not, please inform where. I D/L and used the latest CHIRP to program my Icom IC-2200 as well as a china UV_3V mini HT, both programmed successfully using the driver that came with the USB cable for the IC-2200. In other words, same cable and driver worked ok for both radios.. Next I purchased a cable for my FT-2800 Yaesu but I get a read header error. This cable also came with a driver but an inspection indicates this driver is identical to the prolithic driver on the IC-2200 driver disk. Why dosent it work? I know there are some people on this list who use the Ubuntu-hams PPA, and we're trying to reach as many people as we can about this change. Dan & Team: CHIRP - great project! Thanks for supporting the HAM community in all of your (many) efforts. I own a Kenwood TM-F6A hand-held transceiver, purchased in fall 2008. My first trial with chirp(ver 0.1.12) lead to errors, but I read in a FAQ about a F6A bug fix in version(chirp-daily-11092011). Chirp(ver11092011) allowed access to the radio without errors. When I attempted to export the data, an error was generated. 1. See attachment(1.jpg) for screen.cap prior to error. 2. See attachment(2jpg) for screen.cap at error. 3. See attachment(ver.jpg) for screen.cap of version information. Environment: 1. WinXP(MediaCenter2002_sp2) on a DELL XPS.400(DXP051) 2. USB><Serial converter to OEM serial cable to radio. Ideas: 1. I am not a "real" programmer :) the error seems to involve a function where the argument is a HEX value but expected a DEC value. 2. I used the same equipment to access the TH-F6A with the Kenwood prog s/w and it worked as expected. 3. I can try another USB><Serial converter, but this error doesn't seem to point that direction. 4. I can try to clear all memory on the F6A but would rather hear your ideas first. What's next? In the future, would you rather see screen.cap's as attachments or in-line images? Any other advice? Dan, here is some additional information for the programming cable guide. For the Baofeng UV-3R is a USB cable available with a prolific chip. Unfortunately the latest driver from prolific does not work with this cable. You have to use a weird old driver used for GPS equipment in the past (PL2303_Prolific_GPS_AllInOne_1013.exe). It does not work with Mac OS X, don't know about Linux. for this reason I replaced the interface with a SparkFun FTDI Breakout board (http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9716). This one works like a charm. Furthermore I also can program my BF-U3 using Windows 7. The old cable could only be used with Windows XP. I removed the cable from the prolific board and soldered it to pin headers which fit in the header connecter of the SparkFun board. For what its worth: black to ground, green to tx, red to rx. kindly, Gerrit.

I get persistent failure to write to radio on an FT-60 with Chirp 0.1.12 on Ubuntu 11.04. It read from the radio OK, but I cannot write back either immediately or after exiting chirp and loading a saved .IMG file. Additionally, I get an IndexError in attempting to use Export from chirp. Unfortunately I've misplaced the CD (I just downloaded the drivers from their site instead), or I would check. 409Shop didn't have them on their site, but you should be able to get the driver from the Prolific website. I have installed the KK7DS_Python_Runtime_R5, Chirp 0.1.12, KawaMall USBSerial cable with Prolific PL2303 drivers, and am trying to program a Yaesu FT8800R. When I can verify that that my usbserial devices in connected through system profiler. When I connect the radio and open Chirp I select the usbserial device and start a download. The radio immediately quits with an error and Chirp reports 'An error occurred' 'ord() expected a character, but string of length 0 found'. How can I start to debug this error?

You still need something to get 0-3.3V. If you have multiple radios I would get one FTDI serial adapter and wire different ends. You could use the 6 pin FTDI cable. I downloaded the .1.1.12 .zip file for MacOS. After Extraction when I run the .App it prompts about being first time run and do I want to download. Immediately after clicking 'OK' it gives an error saying "unable to fetch CHIRP 0.1.12". Is there a way to manually download the full App?

Dan I tried to set the FM Narrow option on the FT-8800, the mode only seems to give me options for FM & AM. Using other software I have options of FM, FMN, and AM. We are stating to go NarrowBand FM here in the DFW area to attempt to free up some frequencies for more repeaters. What do you need to add this mode ? Would a set of files similar to the ft-60 files work ? one for FM , one for Am and one for NFM ? Allan R. Batteiger WB5QNG

[chirp_users] SOLVED: Problems under Ubuntu 11.10?

This is my last thread butchery for the day, promise! I found out what the "problem" is, if there really is one. Its more like user error, certainly not a problem with Chirp its self. The "problem" is the Unity interface under Ubuntu. The menu bar is taken away from the app window, and stuck up at the top of the screen but kept invisible until mouseover. When Chirp starts up, it is not full screen and has nothing to display. However, if the user moves the mouse to the top of the screen, the menu bar appears and the app is quite useable. The most intuitive way around this is simply to maximise Chirp - the top of its window then sits below the menu bar and everything feels reasonably good! Chirp seems to be programming my UV-3R very nicely indeed - I'm over the moon that I can have the same memories in my 3R and my VX-6 with ease! Unity is pretty, but it does have its usability problems from time to time, hi! Thanks and 73, Dave M0MYA.

I meant that CHIRP should be setting the flag any time it changes a memory. No change to this functionality was intended, nor do I think any was really made. CHIRP would inherit the flag already set in the memory if it didn't set it. Looking at the code, both the 8800 and 8900 should be setting the flag to display the alpha tag. I need the person to: 1. Download an image of the radio 2. Toggle the "mem name/frequency" setting on one channel (i.e. change it from either showing the memory to showing the frequency, or vice-versa) 3. Download another image of the radio 4. Hello All, My first post here, so I hope I'm in the right place! I'm Dave M0MYA, a radio amateur from the UK. My main interests are operating homebrew and /P. I'm trying to get Chirp going under Ubuntu 11.10 in order to program my Baofeng UV-3R. I'm a reasonably experienced linux user of a few years now, so I'm not afraid to tinker, but I can't seem to get chirp going. Hello to the Group and thanks for this neat software which I found referenced on the Baofeng UV3R Yahoo Group. I bought the radio today at a hamfest and was trying to come up with a way to utilize the frequency lists I have for a Wouxun KGUVD1P when I discovered Chirp. So I downloaded the latest stable version and used it to download my Wouxun into a radio-specific image file. One thing I noticed was that even though I have receive tone set to OFF in the Wouxun, the download in Chirp shows code 23. Is that the same as OFF? Next, since the Baofeng does not support names, I was wanting to make the Wouxun list into a series of shorter lists for the Baofeng by deleting entries before uploading to the Baofeng. I opened the Baofeng and imported the Wouxun list, but when I highlighted multiple lines with click, shift-click and deleted them the delete did not go as it should. It looked like Chirp only deleted the odd entries and left the even ones highlighted. After pressing delete again on the remaining highlighted entries, some of the "deleted" entries seemed to come back. Is multiple line delete not supported, or am I doing something wrong? Dan I just programmed a FT-8800 and I have some interesting results. I tried to make channels as P (preferred for scanning) since the list I imported has quite a number of repeaters and simplex freq. I also set the scn.msm to msm. and scan mode to msm However I am still scanning all memories! I downloaded the radio using Bob Freeth software and discovered that the Preffered bits are set for Hyper Memory 2 mostly correct, Hyper Memory 1 mostly wrong ( missing quit a few, some random ones set). the other hyper memories are not set at all. I have attached before and after files. The ones that do not say new are the one where I imported my radio, then the CSV file, marked the channels as pref. The one with new in the name were done by reading the radios using bob Freeth's software, correcting the issues, writing them back out to the radio and testing them, then reading them back in using chirp. This should give you two set of files in your format to compare the differences. Allan WB5QNG

Anyone else have a problem saving a Jetstream file? I DL my 220 radio, modify and then try to save. It shows as a img file but if i open it there is nothing there but the default. what am I missing? dan -- If I am tired now why do I need to RETIRE later???

I use chirp-0.1.12 Win32 version. But i can't import CSV file saved by CHIRP. Or i've created empty "document" and imported the CSV file, but got empty (only zero line) Import From File dialog. P.S. I don't want to register on the bug tracker for leaving the issue.

I notice that the program saves "debug.log" in the program directory (default in "Program Files\CHIRP"). But Windows Seven UAC forbids saving of user (runtime) data in the Program Files tree. Win7 UAC advices to save user data in %APPDATA% or %LOCALAPPDATA% directories (ex. "C:\Users\[username]\AppData\" + "Roaming\" or "Local\" + "[program name]\"). Could author change the path of saving user data?

I have http://d-rats.com/yum/f11/ installed as a repository. I tried adding http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/repository to the openSUSE repository list, but it failed. There was an error in the repository initialization. Error refreshing service chirp (http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/repository): Parse error: repoindex.xml[122] Entity 'copy' not defined Is there another option? ===== The reason I ask is that chirp fails to install under openSUSE 11.4 software manager yast2. It complains that "nothing provides pyserial needed by chirp-0.1.1.12-1.noarch " even though I have the latest python-serial offered by yast2 (2.5-3.3). TIA, Andy

Hi all, As promised, I just posted the 0.1.12 release. I did so on the new website software I have been testing. Hopefully the result is a cleaner interface that brings together the bug/feature tracking as well as the main site content. It will also allow some willing volunteers to help write some documentation more easily. Please note that you must now create an account to file a bug. This requirement is intended to help reduce the amount of spam that gets filed on the system, and more specifically, the (large) number of false positives generated by the _dumb_ anti-spam module. I'm sure there will be some bumps in the road (and missing information) with the new website, so please just let me know if something is missing or broken and I'll fix it. Version 0.1.12 brings support for several new radios, including: - Alinco DJ-596T - Baofeng UV-3R - Kenwood TH-K2 - Kenwood TM-271A - Puxing PX-2R - Puxing PX-777 - Yaesu FT-2800M - Yaesu FT-60R The release also includes the usual raft of bug fixes and several new features. I downloaded v0.1.12 yesterday (this is the first time I've tried to use CHIRP) to try to back up and edit the memories in my Puxing PX-2R after some frustration with the Puxing software (it crashed after I had hand entered a number of entries). CHIRP connects to the unit and downloads the data, but everything is wrong. It looks like some sort of 'off by one' error, as the channel name has the first letter chopped and the frequencies are wrong, the tones are wrong, etc. For example, in channel 1 I have the settings for a local UHF repeater: * Freq: 442.950MHz * Receive Tone: None * Transmit Tone: 110.9 * Offset: +5MHz * Name: N5SVZ * Width: narrow * Power: high * Step: 12.5Khz Here's what is in the chirp file that I saved from the radio: <memory location="1"> <shortName>5SVZ0</shortName> <longName>5SVZ0</longName> <frequency units="MHz">442.908000</frequency> <squelch id="rtone" type="repeater"> <tone>88.5</tone> </squelch> <squelch id="ctone" type="ctcss"> <tone>88.5</tone> </squelch> <squelch id="dtcs" type="dtcs"> <code>503</code> <polarity>NR</polarity> </squelch> <squelchSetting>dtcs</squelchSetting> <duplex>none</duplex> <offset units="MHz">447.908100</offset> <mode>NFM</mode> <tuningStep units="kHz">5.00000</tuningStep> </memory> I have not used previous versions, so I can't say whether this is an issue with the new build or with my radio. I noticed on Chirp 1.11 that some of the frequencies change when loaded to the Yeasu FT8900 AND that the list is limited to 500 entries. I noticed a few frequencies being saved to the radio were changed from 146.92 to 146.91 and some other similar issues. Has anyone else had that problem? -- John Gorena KD5JUN

The FT-50 is mentioned in the chirp code (daily build 08/29/2011), but it is commented out in directory.py. Does this suggest that the FT-50 will soon be accomodated, or that additional testing is still required, or...? I have a FT-50, and cannot find programming software available aside from ADMS. I also have a VX-5 which seems to work well with chirp, and a TH-D7A which I will try soon. I really like the idea of FOSS radio programming software, so thanks! Phil AG4AT
