I checked the radio support page (which I should have done before I complained) and it shows the 707 is only supported for 2m/440, which explains the errors. Is there any particular reason for this? When I download from my Kenwood TM-G707 I get a error with any channel that has a frequency outside of the 2m/440 ham bands. The 707 has a fairly wide RX and there a lot of bands it can receive (but not transmit). Is there a CHIRP setting for this? [chirp_users] FT-60r not receiving "on frequency"

Hi All, I'm trying to write to a FT-60r using the latest stable build and the latest dev build (2013-11-21). Using both versions of software, it seems that the radio is failing to receive on the correct frequency, even though Chirp shows the correct data was entered. Example: Saving 477.3875 with a step of 12.5khz is being received by the radio as 477.380. I verified this by changing the memory settings from Alpha to Freq. A frequency of 477.380 is displayed in that memory location. BUT - the strange thing is, if I read the configuration back via Chirp, it reads that 477.3875 was actually programmed into the radio in that memory location! I'm just picking this single frequency as an example, but it seems that every frequency I programmed into the radio is "off". If anyone can help me out here, that would be great! [chirp_users] Tasks for creating CHIRP documentation

To start to create the beginner's guide, probably the easiest place to start- because it's likely the process is the same for all of the file formats - are the import functions. To review, according to the main page on the wiki, CHIRP can import data from; a. EVE (application for the VX5R) b. Kenwood HMK files c. Kenwood Commercial ITM files d. Icom .icf files e. ARRL Travel Plus .tpe files f. VX5 Commander Files g. VX7 Commander Files If I could get a sample file of each of these, I could start documenting the import process. It would also be very helpful to know if there's anything special about these formats that needs to be tweaked - anything at all - before or after the import is completed. It doesn't have to be very big or anything special - if it imports correctly into CHIRP, it's useable. My email is ka3jjz (at) comcast (dot) net After these pages are complete, the next imports to be documented will be the repeaterbook, etc. imports. I'm already somewhat familiar with the RadioReference import (it's a little similar to a Uniden Home Patrol because it uses your zip code as the driver) so that should be pretty simple. Unfortunately since I'm currently on unemployment, buying a radio to document the upload/editing/download functions is a no-go - so if anyone wants to jump in on that, it would be a big help. That's probably the largest part of the job. Even if you're not fully informed about all those functions, getting a starter page for each of those functions will go a long way to identifying what needs to be enhanced to make it complete. My desktop died just recently, so doing this on a puny netbook is something of a challenge... We also need a list of each radio that's on that main page, and whether it's a clone mode or live mode radio. There's 2 ways we could do this (and both are probably just as useful). Put up a table with all the radios on it, and also list that individual radio on its own page, as shown in the template I sent out earlier. I didn't see much about this in the table of radio functions that's already there, so it's yet another point a newcomer might not know about. That won't be too difficult, if someone has that data, I could use this as well. Once all of this is done, then it's time to use the template and start creating a page for each radio. Actually Bob that's really 2 separate issues. I'll let the CHIRP developers comment on putting context (by radio) help into the software. That's a long way off in any case - the wiki has to be greatly enhanced, first, before that could even be considered. It does make sense to me, however. What I was referring to was the way each radio in the wiki would link to the pool of pages. A simple example would be a radio that updates in live mode (and we just saw such an example recently on this list). We would have 1 page (or 1 set of pages) each for uploading, downloading and editing a radio's template (image file). Now if that radio was a live mode one, you don't upload data to it, so the uploading page would not be linked. It would only have links to downloading and editing. There would have to be a note on that radio's page that it was a live mode radio, and that you would need to do a CSV export to save the data you uploaded. Another simple example would be if because of some limitation, CHIRP could not import EVE files for a particular radio. Then in the list of import formats on that radio's page, the EVE page would not be linked. This is what is meant by selecting pages to be linked from a common pool. If a particular function isn't available for some reason, there should be no link to it. A Check_For_Updates function would be nice to have, BUT it sounds like implementing it in a way that satisfies everyone would be tricky. Ideally, the function would be configurable so that it could check for updates: - Each time CHIRP starts - Daily - Weekly - Only When The User Clicks a Button Many programs have a setup option similar to this - I know both the video players that I use regularly give be options similar to this. But the Check_For_Updates would also need to recognize that there are different kinds of updates. I would think that if someone were running the Stable version, it should only check for updates of the Stable version. If someone were running a Daily Build, perhaps it should notify them if there is a newer Daily Build (which would happen very often) AND if there is a Stable version newer than their Daily Build

Hello there. I did everything almost i guess... I put the new bulid with the driver 3.2.0.0 as recomanded for win 7 . i connect my UVB6 with the serial data cable. on the UV5R everthing works great ,but on the new UVB6 the downloading is OK but on uploading i get this messeg : Radio did not ack programming mode what can be done ? thanks a lot . -- Best wishess for you !!! For example I remember seeing something on the miklor website where CHIRP couldn't program any 6 meter frequencies for one of the Baofeng radios. Just looking at the documentation that's already on the website, it appears that there's no mention of the miklor website anywhere. Yet there are several places there that have information on Windows installs and other data that the wiki should have but doesn't. Clearly some links to this website are going to be needed. I wouldn't have even known about this site until I was told about it - and neither would any newcomer trying to read the Chirp wiki. That's a pretty serious omission. Along those same lines, it also seems apparent that given the miklor site has a few Windows tips that the wiki doesn't, it does make one wonder what other Windows tips are not documented on the wiki. I think there should be a 'Running under Windows' page much like there is for MacOS and Linux. All of those tips - including the Windows stuff that's found in the OEM cable discussion - should probably be in one place. The OEM cable discussion could then just link to the Windows, Mac and Linux page as needed. Related to the cables, it's mentioned in the wiki that some OEM cables work with other radios (for example, the FT7800 cable works with other radios - be specific - which ones?). Again this is something the newcomer would not know, and needs to be clearly spelled out. In addition, all the data that's specific to a given radio can be moved to that radio's article. Next is the question as to which radios are 'clone-mode' radios and which aren't. That topic is mentioned in the FAQ, there doesn't seem to be anywhere that defines which model is or isn't. That's something that the article for each radio would need to have. Unless I missed it, I didn't see it in the features list page either. Even if it is there, it sure seems difficult to find. It looks like that the basic functionality of CHIRP varies somewhat between non-clone and clone mode radios (is this right?). One way to address this is to create a pool of common pages that defines all of CHIRP's functions. They would be broken down into 4 categories; - Functions that are common between all radios - Functions that are common to the clone mode radios - Functions that are common to the non-clone mode radios No I didn't miscount. There is a fourth function - importing and exporting data. There's already something on the wiki for CSV stuff, and there's even a YouTube video on this. And that's part of it, but not all. There's also the matter of importing data from external sites, such as Repeaterbook or RadioReference. Each of these would need to be defined, one function at a time. Once all that is done, then each model of radio can point to the page(s) that apply to it, and ignore those that don't. When a new radio comes along, it's then just a matter of building the correct links There's lots of work to be done here - writing good documentation often is. No one person should even think to do all of this. But if we can get people just to define one function, eventually it would all get done. i installed both the reg and the daily version on both xp and 8 windows platform. i changed the cable driver to the old 3.2.0.0 version (programming works fine with the vip software) but all i got was a widow shown on the attatched file wheb i click ok the window disappear and nothing happens! how do i start using chirp??? -- Amnon

While that miklor site looks awfully good, it doesn't cover every radio that CHIRP does. In some cases it just offers Windows information on drivers and such. Valuable in and of itself to be sure, but there's probably some oddball cable issue with some of these no-name radios that CHIRP supports, but that site doesn't. And didn't I just see a few Yaesu questions come through the list? That's another one where that site doesn't have a description for each radio. Even if it's somewhat repetitive because it's common to every radio by that manufacturer, indexing these links can only benefit newcomers. I think the wiki that already exists could be quite a resource for a programming guide for beginners. It would take some effort of each of the members that has a particular radio, but it could - and likely should - be done Looking through YouTube is all fine and good but if you do a search like was suggested recently (such as 'program uv-5r chirp') you're going to come up with a lot of non-related stuff - even stuff that doesn't have anything to do with the uv-5r or the chirp software If we had a single page for each radio that listed the various YouTube videos and other tricks, it would go a VERY long way to making such a guide. Some questions that could be asked might include; - What is the SKU of the OEM cable for this radio (put another way, what is the correct model number of the original manufacturer's cable) - What do you need to do to put the radio into a programming mode (as I understand it, some radios you have to go through a menu to do this. It would be helpful if this were documented) - Known issues from importing data and how to fix them - Any known programming issues unique to this radio, and how to fix them That's just scratching the surface. No doubt there are other such questions that people have had that have come up over and over again and should be documented in a single spot The real power becomes evident if each model number that's found in the front page becomes a link to that radio's page. Those of you familiar with the RadioReference wiki know how easy it then becomes to look up a particular model. Anything that's common to all radios could simply point to that page - for example the model support page could be a 'common' page for each radio so that someone can quickly look up what features for that radio could be programmed. I'm unfamiliar with Redmine, but if I could build the listings (by radio) then someone can change the listing to Redmine's language, and we'd be on our way. I know some of you are RadioReference members, so you know the amount of work I did in the early years of building the wiki there - it started with barely 100 pages, and grew to over 4000 when I resigned the admin status. You may also know that, along with the author of the software, I wrote the FreeScan user guide, so I have some experience in writing software guides of this type I don't think it would be too tough to gather this stuff together - if the membership is willing to contribute to the effort. I could be point for this, but someone would need to do the Redmine code once enough information was accum'ed. With Xmas coming (and maybe folks getting new radios) this project is timely as well as informative. This would, obviously, be subject to whomever is the sysop/admin of the web page, but to me, it's well worth considering. I don't doubt that we have a lot of newcomers out there (myself included, at least insofar as the software is concerned) so whatever we can gather in a single spot is worthwhile. Comments? Seems if you have a little disagreement with Dan that you are immediately moderated. A pretty cowardly move seeing I own several ham radio groups on Yahoo, now for over 3 years and have never had to moderate a user's comments. I posted a comment maybe 4 hours ago regarding the proper cable for the Yaesu FT8800 and it has yet to get posted. And I have been thanked many times by and for helping list members with Chirp and Mac users and have taken my time off list to save list traffic to help others. Yet my comments are now under the sword of Damocles via Dan, the site guru. I will now on all my lists recommend against using Chirp even though I have defended it vigorously in the past. I dare you to post this Dan.

I realized the cause of the problem that was reported to me. When I go to the chirp site in a browser with no ad-blocker, there is an ad on the right in the form of a green button saying "start download" which installs malware on Windows machines. Is there any way for the Chirp site owner to control what ads are shown? Or does the site just get ads from some ad server? I wouldn't be surprised if others are being misdirected by this ad, causing them to go away thinking that Chirp is just a malware site. 73, -Eben / K6EBN

[chirp_users] VX-6 Cable Issue

It's been a while since I've modified the memories on my VX-6's. Yesterday I tried to make some changes and came across this issue. I'm able to upload but not download. When I try to download I get an "error" message on the Yaesu. Nothing happens in CHIRP until I power off the Yaesu then I get a failure message. I tried this on two different Linux boxes. One a Xubuntu 13.10 netbook and the other a Xubuntu 13.10 VM running on my MacBook. This is important to me since I often program radios of others when we officiate bicycle races. Being able to add frequencies to their existing list is essential. FWIW, a similar cable worked just fine on my Baofengs. TIA for any help.

Hi Dan, I was the one who reported the problem in the first place. I certainly don't begrudge you the ability to have some ads to pay for all your trouble. On the other hand, I recommended CHIRP on another list and one of the recipients got screwed up by malware installed by clicking on the big green "Start Download" button, not seeing the tiny "advertisement" label. So at least one person has bad things to say about CHIRP, thinking it's a scam and the site is filled with malware, and there may well be more out there. So that's not good for your business either. Hi all, I use a repeater that has two different PL tones: one for TX, and a different for RX. CHIRP doesn't seem to like this type of entry, and will change it to something else when I save the file. I checked back with the person who reported the problem, and he said that he went to the original site, but that he used the "big green 'Download Now' button" on the right of the web page. Hi, I bought this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-in-1-Programming-cable-for-Kenwood-radio-TK-2317-… I'm sure a creative search in your favorite search engine will show alternates as well. A word of caution: this particular cable does not work with the UV-82. Even after trimming some of the plastic it does not make the right contact. Maybe more trimming would make it work but I didn't try that. My fake Prolific cable does work with the UV-82. Go figure. Hi, I bought a serial-only cable with a Kenwood dual plug and modular plug on a pig tail with a DB-9 socket. I then waited for a sale on FTDI USB to serial adapters and bought two of those at Newegg. That is now my programming cable of choice though I also have one of the fake Prolific ones. Made that work by telling Windows 7 to use the old driver. Works fine too. As an aside I'm sure I'm not the only one who shook his head when I ended up paying about the same for the programming cable as I did for the radio. These radios are seriously cheap and those cables are seriously expensive. I mean not in absolute Dollars/Euros/Yen but relatively speaking. Same for earbuds and antennas. In any case, just received my Baofeng UV-82 and a UV-5RA. I look forward to copying channels from my F6A, D710 and D72 to them. Thanks to all who make CHIRP possible! 73, Sander W1SOP

As many others may have discovered, the "stock" programming cable does not work with Chirp. The program acts like it's downloading from the radio, I get the progress bar, etc, but then there is nothing in Chirp. Just a blank page in Chirp for my radio. I know the problem lies with the Prolific chipset. So I'm curious, what are other users who use this radio use for a cable? David

[chirp_users] Problem reported with Windows download?

Hi all, I've been using Chirp successfully for a while with my various radios. Recently there was a discussion on the VX-7 list about ADMS-1G programming software, and I suggested that the person try Chirp, since it worked well in my experience, and is free. One person on the list replied as follows, suggesting that there is malware in the Chirp download. Since I don't have a Windows machine, there's no way I could verify that. Is there any possibility that the Chirp download got hijacked? Or is this guy just spreading FUD to get people to buy other software? Thanks & 73, -Eben / K6EBN > 1b. First I would suggest trying out the latest daily. http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Download - scroll to bottom in "development builds" section Second, for mac, if you have chinese cable, it's probably fake PL2303. The official mac driver might look like its working, but nothing really happens. (At least on windows, you get the yellow icon and code 10.) You will probably want to try out the fixed driver: http://changux.co/osx-installer-to-pl2303-serial-usb-on-osx-lio/ Thirdly, with the chinese radios, sometimes they need to be factory reset to work properly. I suggest taking a backup w/ "good" oem software, then resetting radio, then attempting to download that "default" image into chirp. If the cable works on windows w/ oem software, but does not work with same cable on windows w/ latest daily chirp, then there may be a bug with chirp and your radio. I understand the issue. My suggestion: Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Right now your struggle with the general case is preventing me from automating the repeated programming of the same radio in the specific case. So specifically, first approach: Export the power level to csv. When importing from csv, put up a dialogue, once per file import, that asks whether to import the power level in the csv or substitute a user selectable default. The user is alerted to the issue, but at least can control it. In my case, I might decide it's worth the trouble to prepare two spreadsheets, one for FT-60, one for FT-8800. More effort, but better than the status quo. Or I might then put the power levels I want for the FT-8800 in the spreadsheet, and when importing to an FT-60, default all to high. In my experience, less than 5W is rarely usable, I often can't reach the whole group on simplex at 50W with my FT8800! And I can barely reach our local CERT repeater on 446 with my HT at 5W. So in this case, I have what I want even though there's some kludging going on. That's not solving the general case, but nobody will be blindsided that there's a name/Watt translation done by the importation that they may need to clean up. Which is no worse than what exists now. If you want a first crack at the general case: It's no secret what absolute power level (watts) hi/med/lo means for a given radio and band. That's three values for FT-60 and arguably eight, depending on how the data structure is organized, for FT-8800. Export the numerical watts to csv and do the best approximation on import. I'd build this on top of the first implementation, and allow exporting as either name or watts, and still allow a default substitution on import. But bottom line, as long as the user isn't surprised that a translation is being performed, and there's some reasonable control of that to cover the important cases (same radio, or mobile -> HT) then you have improved usability and no reason for complaint by users, I think. The obsessive user can either maintain separate spreadsheets per radio, or be alerted that they need to do a "power level cleanup" pass on the .img after importing. You say you've been thinking about this, and what I've suggested isn't rocket surgery. So perhaps I'm missing something. I'm happy to continue the discussion. Thanks and regards, -dan

Hey guys, a couple of questions: The current stable version 0.3.1 was released on 7-April-2013, 7 months ago. I'd prefer to stick to released versions, but I've seen quite a bunch of enhancements over the months described in the daily build notices, some of which I'd like access to. What is the thinking/ timetable for another stable release? Second: I can readily see how to set the power level for a memory when a .img file is loaded, and save and reload that. But I like to build my memory images from a collection of spreadsheets, kind of mix-n-match. Exporting to csv, it looks like the power level is lost, and so I infer I also can't build a csv with power level info and import it. Am I missing something, or could that be added, or is there another workflow that would address this issue? Thanks, -dan

I installed CHIRP OK and when I connected a radio (Baofeng UV-5R) I could download the channel information. When I tried to download the information from the Kenwood TH-F6 I could not get any information. CHIRP blinked but no information was transferred. I don't understand why it would work with the Baofeng but not with the Kenwood. I have tried 2 different programming cables. Thanks for any help. Morris

Hi, I am trying to program a Baofeng UV-5R. I have uploaded a data sheet from the radio, imported 3 repeater stations from the repeater book and then uploaded to the radio. Now the radio will not allow the a/b switch, the menu switch and the vfo/mr switch to work and will not transmit the offset freq, Also (assuming that I can get the radio to work again) how do I import additional stations to the radio without overwriting the ones already there? Thanks for any help available

Hi All, I am not sure if this would be a bug, feature request, or something that is already fixed, so that is why I am starting my search with an e-mail to the group. I have a UVD1P that I am programming for a client. Using Chrip, I already extended the Rx side of the radio up to 490Mhz because he needs to receive up in the 480Mhz part of the band. That mod seems to have worked as I can go into the VFO and add the frequency in by hand. (*disclaimer, I didn't see if it was actually receiving anything up there yet). The problem is, when I try and program the extended frequencies in with Chirp, I get a software error stating that the channels that are above 479Mhz are out of range for this radio. True, on the default settings they are out of range, but after doing the software mod via chirp, they are no longer out of range. Is there anyway in Chirp to program these extended frequencies? Has it been included in the latest daily build and I just missed something? I figured I would ask here before I submitted a request via the bug tracker / issue / feature request page. 73 Phil / w2lie

Hello, Before I try to see if Chirp can program my new Baojie BJ-UV55 I thought I would ask if anyone has been able to program one? I don't see it listed as a supported radio, I have heard that it is very much like the Baofeng radios. Tony

I am very new to this so please bear with me..... I was programming a local repeater with the daily build of CHIRP, setting the off set to +. But when I go into the menu system the offset (menu item 25 - SFT-D) is always set to off. Not + as I set it in chirp. I can manually make the change to a + offset. (I do get broadcasts from the repeater so all seems well) I also set the offset (menu item 26 - OFFSET ) to 0.600 MHZ in CHIRP but it is always 0.00 and will not manually take a change. Is there a bug in this build? Very perplexing as to what is going on. Any help much appreciated. Thanks Joe

Hi ! When you first start up your laptop or pc hit f12. That should give you the choice to boot from a CD or if the unit is new enough an external drive or flash . willc.

I am having problems writing from chirp to my vx-2. It downloads from the radio ok, but when I try to write to it (real serial port com1), it says it does not get a reply. I usually use vx-2 commander and it works correctly downloading and uploading. Hi, thanks for this help page. I have followed the instructions to download to a bootable cd/dvd, but when completed it would not load. I also could not install manually in that the files would not open with any thing I tried. Next I downloaded chirp for windows (my version is 7) and can not find an installation file in the download. Why do I need a frequency in the offset cell even for a simplex channel? I was redoing my channel list yesterday and noticed the radio would not transmit on a channel that was for simplex crossband use into my base radio. I had removed the frequency figuring that if it is simplex it doesn't need an offset entered since it is the same as the RX/TX entries. Well that's not the case. It's no biggie. But I would like to understand the logic of needed the simplex frequency entered into the offset cell. Or maybe I'm doing something else wrong?

Has anyone gotten the Chirp to work, as intended for the UV-B5. i have no problem with driver and cable or COM port. Only problem is with Chirp not working with my UV-B5. Would you like to help CHIRP improve support for Yaesu VX-3 and VX-6? I have just completed adding complete support for VX-2 and FT-90 into CHIRP. As I have recently acquired a VX-3 and VX-6, I am currently looking into improving some of the features and support for these radios. Anyone using the USB to Baofeng /Wouxun and a dozen others named Chinese radios cable with PL2303 chip from radioshop888.com (and possible a lot of other retailers who try to best they can retail genuine parts) will find that their Mountain Lion driver will work after they upgrade to Mavericks. Now, I cannot guarantee this to everyone obviously. Too many variables. But you all have at least one guinea pig out here to put up his or her OS-X system up for grabs with an upgrade. And Mavericks if you wandered doesn't really feel different from the previous build. If you want the upgrade better have a goof fast connection, took me a while at 2.20 MB/s to download 5.29 gigs. Then it's atl east another hour and a half to install.

Hi! I downloaded the LiveCD for Chirp and tried running it on my older 13" macbook. The keyboard driver doesn't load properly and I can't use the keys. Only the embedded numeric keypad seems to work at all. The delete key words, but not enter. It's pretty weird. Has anyone else encountered this? Is there a fix for it? So two issues. I am using the latest Daily with 2 new B5s that work fine. 1 - I can download from the radio.... When I do the channel tab is populated but the Settings tab is blank. If I enable Developer mode I can see data for the settings but I wouldn't want to edit it there. 2 - in the Memory (channels) tab their are 4 settings columns missing, BCL Reverse Duplex PT ID and Compander missing. That would mean that one would need to select each channel and use the right click Edit function on each channel individualy. What am I doing wrong? Use a Mac to program BF-888 and UV-82 radios. All works well in downloading and uploading programming to radios, however after programming the BF-888 and I shutdown CHIRP my Mac becomes unresponsive to keyboard input. Computer will not shutdown or restart. I have to do a hard shutdown on the computer to reset everything. When I program the UV-82 the computer behaves itself when I close CHIRP and I encounter no problems.

I get this error when I try to import the stock Marine channels into my BF UV-5RE+ "There was an error during import: list index out of range" Behind that error box is another box that says "Please wait Preparing Memory List...." I open chirp, read from radio, choose Radio, Import from Stock Config, choose Marine VHF Channels and that's when the error occurs. I've used this method to load the NOAA, MURS and FRS/GMRS channels with out issue. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit. Thx Greg

I will play nice... I promise...nothing more to add. I have had no issues importing from databases like repeaterbook on 4 models of radios. While not identical to canned data, they are similar in some ways.

Tim at Yaesu tech support says that Chirp "burns out" EEPROMS on Yaesu radios. He says that results in the radios locking up. It was not clear whether he was saying that the EEPROM was destroyed or just programmed into a state that the radio would no longer work. I'm guessing that this might have been a problem during Chirp development and is no longer the case. I see that there are several steps involved in programming the Yaesu radios with Chirp. Does failure to follow the steps precisely create a risk to the usability of the radio? Sorry if this has been discussed before. Tim assures me that he makes no money by recommending RT Systems stuff. I sure appreciate the universality of Chirp.... support of multiple computing platforms (Mac in particular!), multiple radios! The value is huge since what holds back many beginners is the difficulty of programming in the channels!
