I admit I'm fishing around here a little but maybe someone can help. I'm helping someone else (remotely) troubleshoot their CHIRP installation. He says that the binary (unzipped, daily build) won't open on his Macbook. I've mentioned the Error logging window that may be holding things up and he's going to check for that, but is there anything else I should suggest? Haven't tried to import just one complete row from a county database but I'll assume that this single row needs to be pasted into your radio's existing list the written to the radio. ? Would be a nice if you could just query from your data source and then write directly to the radio adding to the existing image. But I guess these radios are basically all or nothing. If you upload one row even from a query, it's like uploading any image with just one row. You end up with a radio with one channel.

If it is not in the list it has not been Implemented yet. Please give them time to work on it or send in the radio to them to allow them to update it to work. [I apologize if this is a duplicate post, but I sent it yesterday, and it is not showing in the archives. The response to my request to join the list got sent to my Google "Promotions" box and I just now go around to authenticating my request to join the list.] I just purchased some Valley Enterprise/FTDI cables to program my Yeasu radios (the two mentioned in the subject header, plus a VX-7) and so far am 0 for 2 getting Chirp to work in programming the two I tried (FT-60 and FT-8800), with the same result for both: Chirp would READ from the radio fine, and create a "spreadsheet" based on what it read; but when I try to WRITE to the radio, the screen blinks a rapid succession of (apparently) windows, with a final error message saying something about being unable to "read echo" and then "bad cable?" Well, I think we can rule out "bad cable?" as I grabbed a copy of Commander for the FT-60 and it was able to read and write to the FT-60 flawlessly, using the same FTDI chip cable that Chirp balked with. I'd much prefer to minimize the different kinds of software I have to use to program my radios, hence my interest in Chirp. I have used it successfully with Baofeng UV-5R radios. I'd love to see support for the Quansheng TG-UV2 (what's up with that, BTW...from reading the Wiki, seem to be plenty of people wanting support for it, and offering to lend radios), but I've got the Chinese software working for it, so there's that. Next up is to figure out how to program a Tonfa UV-985 (which I would imagine is nowhere on Chirp's horizon, though I've read that it has been programmed with Chirp and a UV-5R BFB-293 image file, so I may try that). Meanwhile, back to the Yaesu radios. If it matters, I'm using Windows 7, and a recent daily build of Chirp (20140102). Basil KE5GAE

[chirp_users] FT-817 Clone Rx error

I've used Chrip sucessfully with a Baofeng for a while, but I'm running in to issues with my F-817. I've recieved an image ok from the radio buy putting into clone mode hitting a and downloading the image. I've then edited the image. As soon as I press the C button on the radio for upload it just says "CLONE MODE" "Error" . Has anyone else had the same issue? Thanks M6OSI

Not to drag this out more than it needed, I had one final observation. After verifying the tone mode for the Anytone AT-588UV should be set in Chirp as: "For RX using CTCSS and TX with no CTCSS (or DCS)... Tone Mode: Cross Tone: N/A ToneSql: {required CTCSS tone} Cross Mode: ->Tone " I opened the OEM software and in the column at the end of the row you can double click on for more advanced settings. Inside there is the Tone Mode setting allowing you to choose between Carrier and CTCSS/DCS. When the settings are as above in Chirp, when the radio is read from the OEM software the Tone Mode is still set to Carrier. I then set the Tone Mode to CTCSS/DCS and wrote back to the radio. So far so good. Just find it odd that I have to set that menu item using the OEM software to set the channel to CTCSS.

Evidently I've lost my marbles, not that I had many to lose in the first place. The issue is decoding tone. Just want to open squelch only when tone is present and properly decoded. Two public safety agencies. Standard PL toning used. Now.. when setting up Chirp I can only get just DEC to appear on the display if I set the Tone Mode to Cross then the Cross Mode to --> Tone. Only reason to decode tone, eliminates the repeater Morse code ID which is not transmitted with a tone encoded. So is this all correctly done? Before I had it set to TSQL and Tone - Tone but it wasn't eliminating the repeater ID. So I set out for an alternative setting. I have it set up similar on a Wouxun HT and when it receives a signal it can't decode the green activity ligh illuminates but there is no audio. So far I haven't heard any ID which is usually every 15 minutes or less.

Have yoi tried just changing the cross mode to ->tone? It may work for you then. [chirp_users] Kenwood TM -281 Chirp not reading from radio.

Tried to down load from radio over passt couple of days. I get message that stated culd not open port com6: [Error 5] access is denied. Tried new KPG46 cable and new Tripplite USB to serial adapter and still would not down load. Then tried it wil the kenwood software and was able to read the radio data. Is this a known problem? Any sugestions would be appreciated. Thnaks KG7GUK

[chirp_users] Wouxun UV6X (Powerwerx) - read new radio, no settings available to unlock the menu?

Is this expected, ie. do I really have to install the Windows software to unlock the Menu on a new UV6X Powerwerx radio? Chirp daily (1/15/2014) on linux reads the frequencies OK (after Download from Radio) OK, but the Chirp Settings tab is /entirely blank/ - there are no options, not even the one to enable the Menu. The box includes a warning paper that says the radio ships with Menu disapled (required for FCC Part 90 radio?), and that the Wouxun software must be first be used to download, select Menu Enabled, then rewrite to the radio in order to enable it. They also warn that third party software may brick the radio. After using the free Powerwerx software to read the radio, enable Menus, and write the radio, the result with Chirp is the same: the pre-loaded frequencies show up, but the Setup tab is blank. O/S is Ubuntu with current patches, etc. Am I missing something? I didn't try writing the radio with Chirp. A few days ago, I used Chirp to read and write a UV6D(v1) -- it worked fine. I have a RR account that I use a lot with Uniden stuff, I now have a Baofeng and have downloaded CHIRP and was trying to access the RR site for freqs but when asked for my zip code I can only put a Canadian postal code and then it comes back telling me I have the wrong County?? how do Canadians access RR site thru CHIRP ? love the software so far Gary

I could not find anywhere in the chirp menu settings to allow me to modify the band limits. I have a 127.8 Frequency I would like to attempt to program into my Baofeng UV-5R. Any help would be appreciated. [chirp_users] .csv file import, fields not populating

I have a file created in KG-UV Commander. If I export it as a .csv file, and then import it into CHIRP, none of the fields populate, irrespective if I tell it the model type is Wouxun UVD1P or UV6, and irrespective of the .csv output format such as using quotes or not, etc. ALso get this if I export from KG-UV6 Commander as well. The 'Name' field in the resultant .csv file says 'ERROR'. I know I can create a .csv file to work with successfully be reading from the radio first, but I was hoping by exporting the file from KG-UV Commander I could also move the Notes across to the .csv file in CHIRP and not have to re-write them all. I am also hoping that I can program all the frequencies I have in my UVD1P data bank in KG-UV Commander into my UV6D via CHIRP as well. Regards, John

[chirp_users] Programing issues with CHIRP and Baofeng UV-5RA

Perhaps this has been addressed in another post, if so I would appreciate a reference to it but for now, here is my issues: 1: When I try to use CHIRP with on my 64-bit Vista home machine, I am unable to communicate to the radio, as soon as I turn on the radio, it displays the greeting then immediately goes into transmit mode. I pretty sure it has something to do with the USB ports on the computer because when I try to communicate with another brand of radio (QUANSHENG TG-K4AT) the same thing happens; Driver: Prolific Version 3.4.48.272 dated 3/5/2013 Chirp version: 0.3.1 Baofeng firmware BFB297 USB cable: purchased from AMAZON along with the radio. 2: I can install the appropriate CHIRP software on my XP based netbook and the same USB cable and I am able to talk to the radio but I still have some issues: a) I am not able to program the non-frequency settings. the chirp software doesn't even show anything under that heading. b)When I upload my channel program to the radio, it will skip some memory locations even through i have the csv file set to have consecutive memory channel loaded. I have no problem using the netbook as my programing computer since I would normally have it with me anyway, but I would very much like to be able to change the radio non-frequency parameters. [chirp_users] Chirp not populating

Greetings I have an issue with Chirp not populating the repeaters list. I open Chirp (blank) click on Radio, select Query data source, click on Repeater Book Query, I input pertinent date click OK. When the Repeater Book page populates it shows all 0's for frequencies. In other words no repeater data shows. I know that the data I'm trying to acquire is valid as I have a friend try the same parameters and his populates. I'm using W7 home premium Toshiba Satellite T1150. Can someone help? Thanks Gus

Hi, cannot seem to get the Baofeng UV-5R (Firmware BFB297) to work with Chirp. I bought the radio and cable at the same time from Amazon. Whenever I hook it up to either a Mac running Mavericks or a PC running XP or 7 and try to download the radio I always get the same message - An error has occurred - the radio did not respond. Just got a UV5RE and used the kenwood programming cable . Radio responded and programmed just fine. Dan, I participated in the survey, but would like to give some additional input. I am not a fan of Ubuntu or its derivatives, but I chose XUbuntu (and now Zorin for a new Chirp-live project I'm working on) partly because of the ppa for updating to the newest Chirp-daily. I'm sure I could make the Chirp Updater script download and install from the tarball, but it's a lot easier to use the repository. If Chirp-daily was available through a Debian repository, I'd seriously consider changing to a different distro for the liveCD. That being said, I run Aptosid on my computer and LMDE on the wife's, both with XFCE, and compile from the tarball. I have no problem working like that and I don't upgrade to the newest daily build every time one comes out. I probably wouldn't regularly update Chirp on my computer even if it was in the Debian repository. Unless there is a change to Chirp that affects security or a radio that I program, I don't update. Hi, I have a Baofeng UV-5R, BF-F8, and a UV-82. The Mac OSX software works great with the UV-5R and the BF-F8, but it won’t work with the UV-82. I’m using the Baofeng USB Programming cable. I’ve noticed that the latest Chirp version for Windows includes support for the UV-82. I’ve tried the Windows version with the UV-82 and it works fine. I was wondering if there is a new version of Chirp in work for the MAC that would include support for the UV-82? Thanks!

I'm helping organize a base set of frequencies -- a 'standard load' -- for our local CERT group, Tigard, OR. I've read a ton of posts and come up with a base set of guidelines that I'm hoping will cover the 'least common denominator' radio that someone might show up with. o Don't use row zero, some radios start at row-1 o Hold to 5 characters for the memory 'name' o Include the FRS and official frequencies as Rx only o Different radios have different numbers of memories, pack the highest priority bits into the lowest memory-rows. Some radios stop at 16 memory-rows, others go to 100 or 128 We'd like to load some Rx-only frequencies -- FRS, the local police forces and ambulance service that use UHF, but in Rx-only. When I set 'duplex' to 'off' Chirp says something about not all radios support this setting. o Is there a list of radios that do support? o If I try to program duplex-off into a radio that doesn't support it, what is the reaction from Chirp? Does it let me know there's a problem or just gloss over and make those frequencies tx-able? I'm trying to figure out how best -- across a wide field of radios -- to manage a set of frequencies that should be Rx-only. Hi list members! Mike Lubrecht here from Snohomish County, Washington. I've just started using Chirp to attempt to coordinate the programming on some of my small HTs. I successfully programmed my Baofeng UV-5R, and was able to upload from my Yaesu VX-3 (not the "R" model.) Unfortunately, I haven't been able to download anything successfully to the Yaesu unit, after carefully following the sequence to put the radio into clone mode and wait for the download from my computer. Am I missing anything? I believe my drivers are all up to date. And since I was able to upload from the Yaesu, I'm assuming that the cable and drivers were working. Any hints would be greatly appreciated. My hope is to clone the Baofeng and Yaesu, using appropriate inport/export (or just cutting and pasting parameters between .img files). Thanks! Mike

Hi All I know that this is a little off topic and this radio isn't supported by Chirp, but has anyone actually been able to program one? This is a 16 Channel VHF only unit. I've tried just about all the software from Baofeng that I can find, but I have not found anything that will talk to the radio. I am 'assuming' it is using a Kenwood cable configuration as well. ok, I am using this program on Linux as it isn't screen reader friendly anywhere else. here's a couple of issues: 1. When importing from data sources, I cannot check or uncheck individual items 2. I cannot simply shift values down one channel (moving 3 to 2 , etc.). I use Ubuntu 13 precise (LTS version) with all packages updated. I also use ORCA screen reader as I am blind. SO, any chance of changing this so it works a little more nicely? btw, I am not the only blind ham around here that may have to use software to program a chinese radio (or even one of the others for that matter).. A lot of us (and there are quite a few thousand of us here in the US) would certainly appreciate it if the developer would address the accessibility issue on windows or OS X (as not many of us use Linux). Those of us blind hams who do use Linux would certainly appreciate a few small changes in the interface to make it a little more screen reader (using ORCA or emacspeak) friendly. there is an FAQ here: http://empowermentzone.com/NonvisualDevelopmentFAQ.htm there is an entry for python scripting there that would make it a lot easier to understand (and setup for accessible UI structures.. in fact, heres the FAQ in question: /Quote What tools are recommended for developing with the Python language? The Chirp LiveCD is now one year old and I have just returned from yet another trip to Afghanistan. I should now be able to update it more often than I have in the past. A new version is now available for download. This version has the latest Chrip-daily (18 Dec 2013) and the interface has been updated. I still recommend using the LiveCD as a LiveUSB. This allows you to easily update to the newest Chirp-daily and save your files. If you have been using previous versions as a LiveUSB there is no need to update to this version, however you may want to consider doing so because of the cleaner look. On my Baofeng Chirp files I have a "power" column available. This doesn't appear to be available for the Anytone 5888UV. Is it possible to bring this in? The Anytone defaults to full power unless I manually set it to a lower power setting and whenever I switch channels it goes back to high. Just obtained new UV-B5. Works OK rf-wise. Installed todays’s daily 20131218 for Mac. Running Mac OS 10.9.1. Python bits are installed and PL2303 driver. Chirp loads and I can select the correct radio and port. When I try the initial download from the new radio I get the Cloning window then "An error has occurred Radio did not ack programming mode.” Any suggestions, please? 73 Martin RH G8BHC

Greeting to the group I have been trying to help a friend out with his FT8800R and connection to Chirp. He is running a Mac Mini that I be leave is pre Intel. He purchased the dedicated USB to radio cable from a link on the Chirp web site. Here is the problem, he launches chirp OK, it recognizes his cable, he places his radio into clones mode, but he keeps getting an error message which states: "could not open port/dev/cu.usbserial-RTWHKYXO: [Errno2] No such file or directory: '/dev/cu.usbserial-RTWHKYXO'" Any help would be appreciated. A friend and I have Baofeng H/Ts that we have been using for the past couple of weeks. They are all programmed with a Chirp file he put together with all of the local repeaters, plus a couple of simplex channels he uses for his church security. The security channels are on channel 0, 1 and 2. When I copied the Chirp file into my Anytone mobile, I couldn't hit the repeaters until I figured out all the channel numbers were offset by +1 number on the Anytone. Apparently the Anytone doesn't want to have a channel #0. Once I understood what happened it was easy enough to offset the channel numbers in the Anytone file to get them where they were supposed to be. I was wondering if this was normal for some radio memory registers to start with "0" and some with "1". Also my Anytone Chirp file sometimes hangs up or freezes, while I haven't had any problems with the Baofeng Chirp files. It usually freezes during a cut and paste operation or during an import or operation. Not a huge problem but sometimes annoying. Should I be downloading new daily Chirp builds? [chirp_users] Testing direct import of .img files

Last night I got a chance to test importing saved .img files from my Wouxun into an Anytone radio. For the most part it works well. I also tried it reverse. .img from Anytone to Wouxun KGUV6D imported but didn't write the first 5 lines which were all public service. Seems it didn't understand the duplex settings. I went back to the Anytone, .img made changes in Chirp then imported it back into the Wouxun. That time it worked. I also uploaded the same .img file to the Anytone and the changes in the settings really didn't matter for those frequencies since I don't transmit on them, tx is actually disabled for all public service. Se yes this is a good way to share your files back and forth if you have different radios. You might need to make some changes because of incompatible settings but that's not a big deal.

Sorry if this topic has been beat to death. I just received my Anytone AT5888uv and am attempting to program it via Chirp. I installed the USB driver from the CD, and apparently my computer can talk to the radio as I can clone from the radio into Chirp. What I want to do is load some existing Chirp files I have from my Baofeng UV5R radios onto the Anytone. When I try to do so, the drop down box to upload the file won't move from the Baofeng. [chirp_users] Issues w/ getting UV-5R to communicate w/ CHIRP on a Mac

All, I'm relatively new to radios, and definitely new to the list - I throw myself at your mercy. I'm trying to program a set of Baofeng UV-5Rs to use the Motorola frequencies used by a few other race teams we run with. I'm using a Mac, OSX 10.8.5, and have already installed the PL2023 USB-Serial driver successfully (I believe). I obtained the driver from: http://www.prolific.com.tw/US/ShowProduct.aspx?p_id=229&pcid=41 I've also confirmed that the USB-serial driver appears to be installed correctly, as described here: http://plugable.com/2011/07/12/installing-a-usb-serial-adapter-on-mac-os-x I now see '/dev/cu.usbserial' in the Port field when attempting to download from the radio (which I didn't see before installing the driver). However, when I actually attempt to download, the 'Cloning' modal shows for a few seconds w/o progress, then I see the "Radio did not respond" error. The USB cable is an "official" Baofeng cable that I received with the radios from a trusted reseller, and is definitely seated correctly. I've tried using different USB ports, turning the radio on/off, restarting several times, etc. but just cannot get the radio to talk to my Mac. I'm really hoping you guys can help; we have a race this weekend and if I can't get the comms working, I'm in a world of crap. Thanks, Colby

Many thanks for the CHIRP Program, and some great CHIRP e-mail suggestions, I'm all programmed and, surprisingly, communicating with other hams...Lotta fun! (note, I tried, and didn't have much success using the AT programming software)...being able to cut & paste is great!)...yes, I played the "port" game & finally won! *Question*: *will CHIRP eventually be able to program AnyTone radio settings ?*...just asking. Also, thanks for the *ease of using* CHIRP to program my BaoFeng UV-5R+ radios. (used in SAR) *Thanks again, for all you guys at CHIRP...and all you do for us newbies!Al ... I know this is straying off topic but as usual I'm off topic anyway...heh But considering the popularity of this radio and using Chirp with it I thought I'd make a brief comment. With Set menu item #34 TDR AB setting it to OFF when switched it gives you a split second to tune the inactive display and tune it be it VFO or channel mode. If set to either A or B, it is impossible to go from the priority A or B when active to the other non-priority display. One example: if VFO A is on a constant signal like the NWS 162.400 but you want to switch to and tune VFO B you have a half a second before the focus switches back to A. As long as you keep tuning the focus will be B. As soon as you stop it jumps back to A. This is in the #34 menu TDR AB = OFF menu. But now way you can tune the other display if the priority is given to the opposite display.

There's nothing to suggest floating a mouse over anything for a description. Perhaps that should be added to the sentence that introduces this table as an explanation. I was thinking of pointing to this table in the individual radio articles so a newcomer could find out the basics about the radio - including whether this radio supported clone, live or file (what is that?) processing for updating their radio's memories. I'm in the midst of creating a table that will list each of the radios that are on the wiki's first page, and whether they work in clone or live mode. This is yet another question that newcomers who have picked up their radios for the first time are likely to have. I have Libre Office so I should be able to read Word documents, but it would be simpler if it were a text document (Word tends to put all sorts of strange formatting characters that most Wikis choke on - really messes the formatting up). I can barely spell Ubuntu (save that it seems to be a Swahili word), so complete details are important. [chirp_users] Icom IC-T90A: Rolling an OPC-478 cable with a CP-2102 USB board

I've successfully made cables for both a Baofeng UV-3R and UV-5R using a CP-2102 USB board. Total cash outlay for each, about $3. Now I'm moving on to my real radio, an Icom IC-T90A. I found the following info: http://highfields-arc.co.uk/constructors/other/opc478.htm#usb But it has not produced fruit with the Icom CS-T90A software. Specifically, it errors "Cannot access COM port." If I remove the cable / diode from the header and jump TX and RX pins together, the CS-T90A software responds differently, indicating "No answer from the transceiver." So, I know the software and the CP-2102 are talking. There's a note in the instructions above about connecting the CTS and RTS pins together... which I can't do on the 2102 board I have. The pins are on the IC of course, but not connected to anything on the board. The diode I used appears to be good and electrically, the cable seems sound. Any ideas? BTW, I found a treasure trove of info on T90A programming, courtesy of Eric Behr at NIU. Hey all, I finally got so my computer would recognize the Baofeng UV-5Rdownload cable, and when I went to Chirp and I select "down load from computer", it says "cloning" but only downloads one frequency, i.e., 136,025000....... I found the Miklor site and am attempting to use their instructions but they don't seem to be very clear or detailed. I looked for a Baofeng UV-5R site that would provide customer support, but couldn't find anything. Also, when I look for my firmware version it says BFB297, and it says to go to the settings section to see your real firmware version #, but when I got there, it doesn't have any numbers listed. It then says I have to download the daily build, but when I do that, it doesn't seem to want to install correctly. It is a zipped file and when I unzip it, it doesn't seem to do anything. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Ray
