Hi everyone ! Just a quick note. I have the latest release version of chirp working OK with Windows 10 64bit on my desktop . There have been no issues so far with chirp while running windows 10 with either reading or transferring data to and from my GT-5 . I had to roll back the 3.6 driver to 3.2.2.0 that windows had initially installed . It was giving me a cannot start device error message. Once I rolled back the drivers there was no further issues. Hello all, I am having huge issue using Chirp in windows 10 so I have installed chirp on a Ubuntu and i worked first time first try. I bought the TYT because it is a quad band and I wanted this to be a mobile that I could use as a house rig as well. The only thing I cannot figure out is that the TH-9800 has a 800 channel Memory but all i am getting is 25 total. Hi to all, Attached is a dev driver for the btech's radio series for your consideration, it has support for a recently discovered version of the QYT KT-8900R. As I don't have this radio I need your help to validate this solution before pushing it into Chirp. Al the bits shows that the initial support for the QYT KT-8900R in Chirp was for a Generation 2 of this radios, now the recently found variant is for the 1st generation of this radios. Please test it if you have a QYT KT-8900R that was not recognized by Chirp after it's addition, all the success/failure stories are welcomed (the failure are more appreciated if come with the debug.log file) To try it you must follow this steps: 1. save the "btech.py" file attached to this post to where you keep your chirp radio image files 2. click "Help" 3. enable "Enable Developer Functions" 4. click "File" 5. click "Load Module" 6. find and load the "btech.py" file that was saved in step 1 *Note:* This special test module only temporarily changes your CHIRP. I've ask several times about adding Luiton radios to chirp and one of your responses in another thread stated how busy you are and I get that. I was just wondering if you could take the two minutes to let us Luiton users know if you plan at all to add it to the Chirp radio list. That way I'll at least know and can explore other avenues which for me means sending the radio back because actually there is no other options except to spend the $50 at RMS to get support. Living on SS won't let me do that. I hope I don't sound too aggressive because I don't mean to be, Just would like some answer. Thanks

I thought with the great success I had with my Linux box and my Baofeng that I would try the LT-Luiton 588UV. So hooked everything up and I chose as radio type Leixen which someone in my club told me worked for them on Chirp. My first attempt I got Failed to download from radio: Radio refused program mode. Anyone know what might be causing this error? On my second attempt I thought well it worked so well with the Baofeng maybe I'd try making it think it's a Baofeng. So I selected Baofeng Model BF888 which I think is a mobile radio like mine. The error this time read No response from radio. Any idea? Thanks, Jack

[chirp_users] limitations of baofeng uv-5r

The default settings for Baofeng uv-5r include the following ranges: 130 - 176 (VHF) 400 - 520 (UHF) However, I was able to successfully raise the VHF range to 130 - 225. I did not attempt to go higher than 225 as I wanted to cover HAM frequencies in my area. After raising the limit of VHF in Other Settings, I was able to manually program a range of fm simplex frequencies through the radio itself. However, CHIRP does not allow me to program the 135cm band into memory, and states that it is out of supported range for this radio. I am able to download these modifications from the radio, but I cannot modify through CHIRP. Can this limit be raised in the driver? For verification I was able to tx from one uv-5r to another on 223.580 simplex.

Using the Kenwood Memory Control Program (MCP), I can create and save radio images independent of the radio. But when I use CHIRP, I get "The Kenwood TH-F6 operates in live mode. This means that any changes you make are immediately sent to the radio. Because of this, you cannot perform the Save or Upload operations. If you wish to edit the contents offline, please Export to a CSV file, using the File menu." In the first place, why the behaviour? It does not appear necessary. I have verified that a change in MCP is not written until I write it. But CHIRP is indeed live. Why? It would be nicer if it were not. And why not save an image, even if the edits are live? This leads to my current puzzle. I have downloaded from the F6A in CHIRP. I save as a *.chirp file. I wanted to copy that to my Icom IC-T8A. I followed the beginner's guide and FAQ to merge the Kenwood data with the Icom data. Of course, the Kenwood data is not a *.img file, but a *.chirp file, and I get a schema error. The error makes sense, but only to a point...I guess that I am missing how to update different radios with the same data. I tried opening both the Icom img and the Kenwood in different instances of CHIRP, but I cannot copy from one and paste to the other. Greetings! New user here, Still getting used to the software so I can get back on the air after eight years of no radio. (It sucked.) While working the software and rearranging a few layouts (using a BF-F9V2+), I noticed that Ctrl-X seems to behave much like Ctrl-C: it will copy, but it will not delete the original memory location once I have pasted elsewhere using Ctrl-V. I'm using XFCE on Debian Jessie at this time and running the daily from 20160517. This seems to be the only program where there are issues. Any words on this? Thanks, -Dennis KE7KIF

Do I understand correctly that this feature applies to a few Yaesus, but exists in CHIRP for all radios to accommodate those few? I tried clicking after ctrl-x, and I see that the memory is active again, and this is on a download for a Kenwood F6A. OK as a backup, but not intuitive. It works on ctrl-x, where I can recover by following up with either clicking or by pasting (as long as no other actions overwrite the buffer), but does not work for deletion. I've been in a habit of thinking that cutting is more or less permanent, and I guess that it is here, too, but only after I write to the radio and complete the process. This is a key reply for me...I had originally thought that if CHIRP knew enough to turn the entry grey, it should know enough to reset the entry to empty. Why not? It would save the confusion that I have had, and that others seemingly have had. But there is a comment below that reference data on the radio that is not accessible. This is puzzling to me. Does that mean that the data exists in the radio, but there is a flag also in the radio that says not to access that memory? Or recall it? Or tune to it? What is the point? Seems to me that if I delete a memory from the radio panel or from CHIRP, it ought to be gone. It's up to me to have a backup file if I want it... Well, that was why I gave it a +1...I found (find) it confusing (now just distracting) to delete a memory and have it turn grey, not reset to "empty". If there is a requirement of the radio that makes the grey data necessary, so be it. [chirp_users] Success w/Linux

I want to thank the guys that help me with my Baofeng HH. Chirp loaded fine in Linux but I had trouble picking the right port the USB cable was on. One of you suggested USB0 and I did that "ls" command and it added it to the drop down list or it was always there at the very bottom. Then I ran that permissions command sudo usermod -aG dialout username and then logged out and back in and it finally worked. Now to get my Luiton working. Does anyone know if there is a radio on the Chirp list that would be compatable with the model LT- Luiton 588UV? Failing that does anyone know of any plans to add this radio. TIA I was wondering if you could tell me where I can get a list of commands to use in terminal with explanations of what they do, I know there's one out there somewhere if you could just point me. I am hoping this gets to the correct thread. I am using a Prolific Cable to interface with my Rugged Radios RH-5R. I think this is a clone of the Baofeng UV5R (?). I also run Windows 10. I found a discussion about Code 10 on Family Software (http://www.ifamilysoftware.com/news37.html). I read this article and then down loaded the file PL2303_64bit_Installer.exe. I run this first and follow onscreen instructions about when to plug in the cable. This has worked at allowing me to communicate with my radios. Maybe this will help someone here. Hi - I'm the one trying to use chirp with my Luiton radio. Still same problem as per last post. So I had an idea. I was reading about the Linux part on danplanet and decided to pull out my Linux machine and give my Baofeng a try and maybe if I can get that to work it would work on my Luiton. So I loaded chirp on Linux as per instructions and everything went fine. Plugged my radio in and got : An error has occurred; could not open port /dev/ttyS0: [Errno13] Permission denied:'/dev/ttyS0' So I read further on your site and ran "sudo usermod -aG dialout username" replacing username with mine, closed chirp reopened and tried again with same results. I have to admit I'm not real Linux savvy. I don't really understand how you pick a port. When I click the down arrow there's a whole list of /dev/ttyS? so I took the default chirp pulled up which is obviously /dev/ttyS0 How do I find out which port my cable is on? thanks again, Jack

You can verify which group /dev/ttyS0 belongs to by running: ls -l /dev/ttyS0 Add yourself to whichever group it belongs. You will also have to logout and login again to refresh your permissions. Hi All I am back after many months---I want to read the memory on my UV-5R. I am using a USB cable I purchased with the radio (4/20/13). I follow the instructions but when I try and download from the radio I get a message indicating the program can't read the radio. When I plug in the cable, the red transmit light turns on. I am using Windows 10---help please.

CHIRP was working until today's software upgrade. I uninstalled and reinstalled once I could not clear the error. When attempting to "Upload from radio" the pop-up box appears correctly confirming COM port, vendor and model. After selecting OK, Then "error #2" pops up "could not open port COM3. The system cannot find the file requested." Windows 10 - Device Mgr tells me that COM3 is set for the Prolific USB-to-Serial. Under General, "This device cannot start (Code 10). A device which does not exist was specified. Prolific driver is 9/4/2015, version 3.6.81.357 Events: Any simple fix??? Hi - Thanks for letting me join the group. The reason I joined is because I bought this radio for a good price after reading some good reviews on Amazon. There's not much else on the internet about this radio. I've downloaded all the softwares available with proper drivers. I've followed the help files on your site plus the ones on Luitons' site. Always I get the same result " Can't connect to the port or radio". I point the software at the right port. I show the ver. 3.2.0.0 dated 7/3/2007 and "this device is working properly". I can't even begin to enter frequencies and codes manually because I can't decipher the Chiglish. Could you please help me and try to get this radio working? Thank you, Jack

I have the same radio. My problem was corrected by trimming the rubber out of the "casual corner" and making it a sharp corner. Then you can hear the connectors snap true. No problems after that. [chirp_users] RT Systems cable and Chirp on OS X

I bought this cable because it fit the radio and was cheaper than the Icom cable. It works with chirp in Windows 8, no problem. I downloaded the OS X drivers from the RT Systems website and the Mac recognizes the cable (which appears to have a custom chip) but when I try to open the serial port in chirp it only shows a couple of internal connections but not the cable nor my IC-31A. The Has anyone been able to get a RT Systems cable to work in OS X? Bob, N7XY

Hello all, Maybe this has been talked about recently, but can't find a post. I programmed my Wouxun KG-UVD1P (1.25M/2M ver.) a couple of years ago and have tried to use a newer version of CHIRP to update it. When that didn't work, I used a 3.1 version, got the same error (com port error), but not sure why it wouldn't take. Could anyone please help? Let me know of any other info you need. I am using latest download of Chirp on a Windows 10 PC. FTDI USB cable from Valley Electronics. When trying to download I get the error message "An error has occurred. Failed to communicate with radio. Radio is not responding." Tried on a different Windows 10 machine with same result. Checked COM port and device is working properly. Followed the online directions that come up in Chirp. Any suggestions as to next steps?Thanks,TonyKK6CPC(a)hotmail.com

I checked back through the archives for several months, and I couldn't find my question. So, at the risk of repeating what has already been discussed, I'll ask. I have not been able to launch CHIRP on my iMac. I have installed CHIRP and I have installed PYTHON. CHIRP still fails to launch. I'm sure that this is 'operator error', so can someone tell me what I've done wrong or failed to do? Thanks, Sam - W5KF

I have recently acquired the Btech UV5001. I also have the Btech UV2501+200 and the FTDI cable and the latest drivers. I am able to download and upload on the 2501+200, but I have not been able to have a successful download with the 5001. I continually receive the error that the radio os unable to be identified. I am able to program manually but I hate not having the ability for uniform programming with my other radios via CHIRP and my saved CSV files. Is anyone still working on the UV5001? the radio works well, I just want to be able to program with CHIRP. Hi to all. Please note that after approval of the new patch sent to the devel queue, next versions of Chirp will not have the Sainsonic GT-890 listed in the Vendor/Model listing on the chirp interface. That's just for a unknown time frame, keep reading. This change obey to the fact that the two variants of the Sainsonic GT-890 known to us are a perfect clones of two variants of the QYT KT8900, so to read/write to the Sainsonic GT-890 you must select the QYT KT8900 instead, the wiki page on the Chirp's site was updated today to reflect this change. Having a clone listed side by side with a reference radio put some challenges to the validating scripts in the devel stages and from the developers point of view & programming paradigms it's wrong. Pavel, I tried the BTECH.py file you posted to the KT8900 group and received the same error. I am going to see if I can find a 32bit system around here to run portmon on and do a data capture. May be a day or two. I have also tried it both in frequency mode and in channel mode, as the Sainsonic gt-890, Btech uv-2501, and as the Waccom Mini-8900, as well as the QYT KT8900 with the exact same results. I have not been able to successfully read from my QYT KT-8900 radio I consistently receive the following message 'An error has occurred' 'Radio identification failed.' Note that this is with two different cables (one supplied with radio requiring older Prolific driver, and the other a brand new BTECH cable that I used without error to program my BTECH UV-2501+220). Hi to all, A user had submitted a serial port log for one of his radios, see here: http://chirp.danplanet.com/issues/3597#note-4 From the logs I can tell (99.9999% confidence) that it's a kind of clone of the Waccom Mini-8900, see here: http://chirp.danplanet.com/issues/3597#note-5 Looking it I found a few peculiarities: * This is the _first variant_ of the _*SAME*__radio model_ that has a different communication protocol from the former model. In the past variants of the same radio model has changed just the internal ID but had keep the magic and comm protocol, but no more... Hello. I have noticed that the OpenBSD port for CHIRP is still for version 0.4.1 which was seemingly posted on 8 October 2014. This version uses an older URL of chirp.danplanet.com/download/. I have created a patch for which points it to trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/ and uses chirp-daily-20160505. Will development of CHIRP remain on chirp_daily, and no longer use build versions like 0.4.1? Can the daily builds be considered stable? If not, how can I predict the path of stable builds? Thanks for a great tool. This latest build works with my hardware perfectly. The code should remain, as it is a great starting point for anyone wishing to write support for the latest AP510 firmware. [Tom Hayward <tom(a)tomh.us>] [IC-T8A] Fix frequency encoding and decoding. Fixes #577 The IC-T8 stores frequencies in three bcd bytes. The last nibble of these three bytes would naturally be the least significant digit in KHz, but this leaves no way to encode frequencies divisible by 2.5 KHz. To account for this, the IC-T8 deviates from its standard bcd encoding for the final nibble. Instead of the nibble representing 1 KHz, it represents 500 Hz: 0x5 is 2.5 KHz, 0xA is 5 KHz, and so on. This patch implements this encoding and decoding in Chirp.

Hi, I've got a Macbook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) and a Yaesu SCU-18 cable. My version of OS X is 10.11.5 Beta 3, but I've had issues with 10.11.4 on up through Beta 3. I've installed the Python Runtime from KK7DS, and chirp runs, but I can't select the driver for my cable. I've tried a few drivers, but nothing seems to map to the /dev/cu.* I've tried the PL-2303HX Rev D Chipset <http://prolificusa.com/portfolio/pl2303hx-rev-d-usb-to-serial-bridge-contro…> driver, and the FTDIUSBSerialDriver_v2_3.dmg driver, but neither seem to work.. Are there other drivers/sources I can try? Thanks! Lee

Hello, Please pardon my ignorance as I am a new Ham trying to transfer data from my Mac to my Yaesu VX-8DR. So far: 1) I have successfully installed Chirp on my Macbook Air. 2) I have been able to export data from Repeaterbook.com <http://repeaterbook.com/> to Chirp 3) I purchased the cable listed below from Amazon to transfer data. The cable is made by Maxton Technology. GoodQbuy® High Quality USB Programming Cable For Yaesu/Vertex Radio VX-8DR VX-8R VX-8 VX-8E VX-9U http://www.amazon.com/GoodQbuy®-Quality-Programming-Vertex-VX-8DR/dp/B012FF… <http://www.amazon.com/GoodQbuy%C2%AE-Quality-Programming-Vertex-VX-8DR/dp/B…> The packaging says that “no driver is needed with this cable.” However, obviously, that’s not true, since the Mac cannot see the radio. I’ve looked over the available drivers listed for Chirp and none of them match this cable. My question is: 1) Is there a driver suitable for this cable that will not interfere with existing Mac drivers so that I can still connect my other devices, such as digital cameras and videos? I am not comfortable using Terminal. My Macbook Air is running OS 10.10.5 If there is no simple fix for this problem, I plan to buy Parallels for Mac and Windows 8 to install the repeater list using Yaesu’s software and cable for the PC. Sure...and here is a reminder to those reading this thread...I am new to CHIRP...AND when I mention something like this, it may sound like a criticism, but all I think I am doing is sharing info. I do have some opinions already about CHIRP (and RTS), but they really need to wait until I have more experience. So... 1. CHIRP did not get names, and that is an important bit of info for me...I thought that I read that the first thing to do with a "new" radio is download from it, then use that to develop further. I don't know how to add names, and don't know how to get CHIRP to download them. I've been tossing the download, but could save it and send it to someone...don't want to spam the list with uninteresting files. 2. RTS shows me 4 tabs in its program: call, limit, memories, VFO. I have saved them as csv files. They represent the configuration of the T8A, not just the memories: scan edges, scan groups, etc. I can send or post to Google drive and share files. Other options? Actually, timely question...but please keep in mind that I had to "distract" myself from ham stuff with work, chores , etc. ;-) That said, with the UV-5RTP looking better (I was able to hit a local repeater using tone, so I guess that all the memories are good to go), I turned to my attention to the Icom IC-T8A. Tried the generic cable, the one that worked w the Baofeng, end could not get it to work...no surprise, as I did not know if the protocols+cables were a match using an adapter. I installed the RT Systems cable and drivers on Windows 10 Pro x64. Downloaded from the radio first try. (Of course, that is w the RTS cable). Name is missing, and I don't know yet how to add it. Minor bump, because I still have the RTS stuff running. RTS actually seems to get more info from the radio, but I don't know if it just adds it in, or if it really comes from the radio...have not cared in the past, as long as the memories were good. And I didn't try to edit anything in CHIRP because the names were missing...I just tossed the data. Hi All, I'm having a problem with two Leixen VV-898's. One is version 1.03 and one is v1.04. The v1.03 was programmed by me about 4 months ago and worked perfectly. A friend purchased a new one for his truck and asked me to program it. But I'm getting an error when I try to read the radio. I am getting "Failed to download from radio: Radio refused program mode". So, I then tried my one that I was able to program 4 months ago, and I get the same error. I am using todays chirp build.. same programming cable (and the cable driver is fine). Any help appreciated Marc

Yeah the Windows version is a bit qwerky. For example, clicking four times to change a dropdown box gets old. Works though.. just more work than it should be. The first time I used CHIRP to program this radio it worked great! Today I wanted to update my radio and I am getting the FAILED TO READ HEADER error message that others have reported. When I looked, all my *.img files are the MODDED ones! Now I am not able to get CHIRP to talk to the radio to download what is on there. I have the same problem with writing to a Yaesu FT-60 handheld. I can download from the FT-60, but when I write I get a "Failed to communicate with radio: Radio is not responding" error. I have checked the issues page and see there was a issue with writing to the FT-60 that was deemed closed after reloading drivers for the Prolific Chipset. My USB/RS-323 interface is a FTDI. The interface is a homebrew RS-232 to TTL level shifter that works, with a different cable, just fine to read and write to my FT-8900R. I suspect there is some timing differences between the two radios. The computer is a Winders 7 - 64 bit 3gHz I3 Processor with 8 gB ram. I am running the latest download of Chrip (4/19/16). Is there any logging going on in Chrip that I can enable and look at? Regards, Bob - N4RFC

You never had an issue because you understood CHIRP ;-) I was able to change all my power settings to LOW, and, encouraged by that, I attempted to do some more block changes. But I didn't know about the Rx|Tx == 0 feature of the UV-5, and how CHIRP handled that, so I blithely changed a bunch of frequencies, only to find that CHIRP changed them back to 88.5. Why 88.5 instead of another freq is a question, but I suppose that it had to be something. Oh, wait, maybe not. If the real value is 0.0 for the CTCSS, why not make it that? But I /am/ learning, and making notes. I am trying to use CHIRP to program my Kenwood TH-F6A and so far it is not working. I have the Kenwood USB cable from Valley Enterprises and I have gotten the FTDI driver software installed on my Windows XP machine. I start CHIRP and select Radio -> Download from radio. I get a dialog box into which I put the Port, Vendor, and Model. I then click OK. The radio's transmit light flashes once, then the dialog box in CHIRP goes away and nothing happens after that. Yep...got that frustration ;-) Might be faster to change the field to an edit field, and let us type in the value. I soon learned about using the keypad to change it at runtime. This is pretty much my habit on Windows. I have seen too many apps that do not save the values otherwise, so that is not my problem here.../my/ problem is not knowing enough about the internal workings of the UV-5 and how CHIRP accommodates them. WRT leaving fields or even a line in order to get the fields to update, this is not necessary in Windows. It is a matter of developer choice. This comment is gold. I am trying to excerpt all these nuggets and build my own "CHIRP, Baofeng UV-5RTP, Kenwood TH-F6A notes.txt" files of notes. My confusion stemmed from the arcane (that's not a bad word) UI in CHIRP. Even hiding "unused" fields didn't clear up any confusion, because I was left with the questions of why these "fields" showed up when I read my radio, but are "unused". I'm beginning to get the picture. And unfortunately, I have experience with other products that are more straightforward than CHIRP, but it's important to note that they are fairly well "tailored" to each product line. The RT Systems product, for example, is much easier to use. I may eventually settle on CHIRP for all my radios, but only after I develop confidence that I can use it correctly. So far, I have been creeping up on being able to predict what my Baofeng actually get programmed with. I've just gotten involved with a group that... I'm grateful that CHIRP installed (I used the zip file on Windows 10) and ran so easily. I downloaded from my radio, and began my updates. That is where I got puzzling results. Puzzled by defaults I selected several lines, and used the properties dialog to try to change the Tone and ToneSql. Instead, those values were all set to some default (88.5), and Cross Mode were reset from >Tone to Tone>Tone. Other similar attempts failed and|or corrupted the data by changing the wrong cells. I wonder why we can't export the whole thing to Excel (I tried, and got only a few columns)...I can use Excel (or some other spreadsheet tool) to make these changes easily. By the time I mad made several change, and stopped to take note of the results, CHIRP had corrupted a dozen lines of entry. I got the message...and went back to changing each line independently. What's worse...there are order-specific operations in CHIRP. For example, when I changed ToneSql from CHIRP's default of 88.5 (apparently), CHIRP changed the Tone Mode from (None). I had to change it back. So now I don't get to simply change what I want, I get to learn the specific order I must follow to change cell values. The column width settings apparently don't retain twixt sessions. The default is too narrow to display the full tome frequency, so I made them wider, but the next time I opened the image, they were back to narrow again. Is there some setting that turns off all the CHIRP defaults so that I can make changes that don't cascade to other unwanted changes? Can I make the font larger? I read some of the reason for not exporting everything to the csv file, but it seems to me that exporting it all and letting me delete columns is a better approach. I tried copying all the cells and pasting them elsewhere, but no app would accept them...stuck again. And finally, I saved my edits, uploaded them to my radio, tried to contact a repeater and failed. Came in, ran CHIRP, loaded my img file, and found that many settings had been changed. I guess this is by design, but I am baffled. The names are in the radio, but the tones and tone settings are changed...? ~Rich Messeder~

Tone mode in simplex has no effect. You are not using a repeater . To further the point, tone no matter the setting won't do anything unless the repeater is using a tone. In that case you must have it set correctly. It seems that though I can makes changes when I have unchecked Smart Tone Mode, CHIRP still either does not save what I see on the screen, or it corrupts the file that I saved when it reads it the next time. I consider a file corrupted when some of it is changed by a program, and I did not want that change. It seems in consistent to permit the changes and saves, then change the data the next time the file is read. ~R~

There are some times when I want to use PL tones w simplex. I live in an area where there are spurious signals that open the squelch, and I want to use PL tones to limit that. (For example, I support a summer program where HS students design, build, launch and recover in instrument package. The balloon goes to 100,000+ feet. We must chase the instrument package, and coordinate with one another as we do.) I changed the I changed the tone mode to (None) and set the PL tone to the one I desired. When I need the PL tone, all I need do is enable Tone and ToneSql, and the PL tones are already set. After I hit refresh, the PL tones changed to 88.5. I can see that someone has decided that 88.5 is the "default" for (None), and I see why the program might change it. BUT I don't want it changed. I want my own defaults. I can get this on my Icom, and I imagine that the Baofeng will also handle this. I don't know. Maybe the Baofeng is more limited. I am just learning it...the book, as we all know, is dismally short on explanations. If this is not clear, please ask for more details and I'd provide. With Smart Tone Mode disabled... 1. Set Tone Mode to (None) 2. Change the Tone and ToneSql to, say, 91.5. 3. Click on a different channel. 4. Hit refresh. On my system, it changes back. Just leave it alone... Good morning...er, I guess that it is now after noon here... I see now that I forgot to intro my "new" radios. I have just joined a group that is using the Baofeng UV-5RTP for the group radio, to simplify group support. Unfortunately, it seems that tech skills are not high in this group...they are looking for someone to help with programming the radios. I want to come up speed on the radios and CHIRP (as well as VIP, I suppose, though I don't know yet what it does). Not only will I be a help to the group, but I can then educate them. Knowledge is power ;-) I have many years of experience with ham and programming radios, though by no means consider myself an expert. The Baofeng radios seem pretty good, and the value for the price makes it a good group radio. Thanks to Tom's hint, I discovered what Jim later confirmed, and that is that though I had View > Hide Unused Fields checked, I had to toggle it off and on to see the effect. That effect /did/ makes some things more clear. While I was visiting the View menu, I saw Smart Tone Modes, and imagining myself smarter than a computer program, I cheekily checked that off, too. //That// stopped CHIRP from messing with my edits, and I may well find that it will make the other mysterious effects vanish, too. I am now able to edit the fields and have them "stick". I appreciated comments from Jock KC6IIH. I do, however, know about simplex and repeater ops (kindly meant here, Jock...I thank you for taking the time to reply, as you do not know my knowledge level). I was specifically addressing the (to me) mysterious behaviour that I saw. Changing [this] made [that] change, and though I could see some thought behind it, I want a program that will do what I want. If I stick a value in a field, whether someone else would choose the same value or not, I want it to stay. It will be a day or so before I get another chance to program and test the UV-5RTP.
