I am asking this question here as I believe there is a good collection of folks who are familiar with different radios. Of course whatever is recommended I hope it can be programmed with Chirp. I am looking for a handheld radio that can do 12.5khz bw audio that can be used for data. I would hope it would have a flat audio in/out port but if not mods are part of the game. It needs to be frequency stable (I will be using it for data) and 12.5khz channel widths. and of course programmable with Chirp. The radio cost needs to be low, I would like to keep the whole project under $500. I will need two radios 1 for RX and 1 for TX. There will be a controller involved. If need be I will put each radio in a can for isolation. This is for a solar project so that is also part of the reason to try to use a handheld. -- Chuck -- KP4DJT HamHotline # 11259

Hi folks, and thanks to Jim and others for prior answers. I am looking for recommendations of a Baofeng 'waterproof' model that meets these criteria: * dual-band and TX capable (or unlockable) over a range similar to old-school UV-5R * mature CHIRP driver and/or minimal history of firmware quirks * USB charging by port in the radio itself (no barrel plug dongles) if available I got a couple UV-9R Pro but found they have issues thus far, not sure if CHIRP related, hardware related, or other, but it rules that model out until I can figure out what the problem is. I got three GT-3WP and so far, while two of them work great, it looks like I got three models with three sets of quirks (one of those being the null set, but still, it doesn't inspire confidence) I got a UV-9R Plus and was afraid to program it for several months after the UV-9R Pro problems, I finally did so today, and it appears to work perfectly. But there's always the question of what will happen with the next one. I understand these are very inexpensive radios and there is always going to be a nonzero chance of getting one with strange new firmware. I'm basically just looking for people's input on what they see as the most solid choice in a 'waterproof' unit (yes I know they are only water resistant) from the Baofeng brand, preferably with built-in USB charge capability, with the lowest chance of upsetting surprises when I attempt to program it with CHIRP. And again. I know they are cheap radios. The next phase of my project is finding something that does all of the above (including a TX range comparable to the UV-5R), but with higher build quality and better durability. Feel free to pipe up if you have recommendations for that, too. Although for right now I am specifically looking at Baofengs. Thanks again. This is a very helpful group.

Greetings from France. When I first got my UV-5R, the channel programming with CHIRP was performed by a friend, who locked the menu button to prevent a beginner like me to make any mistake which could have screwed the programming. Now I would like to unlock the menu, but I cannot figure out how to do it. I did quite a lot of internet research, but I could only find duplicate tutorials on how to lock the pad with the key button. That is not what I am looking for, of course. The menu button is unresponsive, I would like to unlock it. Thank you in advance for your help.

Dan, et alia: Thank you to eveyone that has worked so hard to make Chirp such an amazing piece of software! It has been well over a decade since I looked at using Chirp (I have used it in the past) and now am re-evaluating what software I will use for my programming needs (especially since I do far more on Linux and macOS, thus Chirp is interesting again). I see it can handle my senior citizen radios of a Kenwood TM-D700 and my ID-5100. However, conspicuously absent from the list are several radios that interest me and I am wondering if anyone can speak to the likelihood of their being supported in the near future? 1) ICOM ID-52A 2) Anytone At-D878II-PLUS (will be arriving this week 3) I may soon have an ID-51A Anniversary Edition again (which I think is basically an ID-51A Plus) If there are issues with supporting any of these radios I'd like to understand them as I am a Computer Scientist myself with some Python coding experience. [chirp_users] uv5r driver makes mem.duplex and mem.offset immutable for gt-5r

I've been using chirp for a few days and I've run into an issue. Lines 1036-1041 of uv5r.py, specifically. The radio can be put into "factory mode" (freeband mode) by starting it up while holding moni+ptt+vfo/mr but these lines in the driver preclude duplex operation outside the amateur bands. I plan on keeping it in "amateur" mode most of the time, but I would like these channels to be programmed correctly. I presume these lines exist just to prevent having an uplink frequency out of band with downlink in-band, but would it not suffice just to warn the user rather than lock these settings down? As a temporary measure, can I simply comment these lines out? FYI, switching between "factory" and "amateur" (ptt+5) modes did not appear to affect the image that chirp downloads as they both had an identical checksum. Any relevant info is appreciated. Jackson

Good afternoon all, from a new Chirp user. Is there a difference between the Icom IC-746 and IC-746Pro in the way it communicates from the Remote port? I downloaded and installed Chirp and tried to connect to my IC-746Pro using the Chirp IC-746 configuration, and could not connect. Tried the same thing with my IC-7300 (using the Chirp IC-7300 configuration) and it connected and programmed the memories just fine, so the cable and the computer's USB port are working as they should. I did verify that CI-V is turned on in the radio and the address is set to 0x66. (Speaking of which, how do I set the address in Chirp? Maybe that's the problem...) Thanks... [chirp_users] Help with Chirp re Baofeng UV-5R

Hi all. I believe this is the correct way to post asking for help with the Chirp program? If not, could you point me in the right direction please? I have a Baofeng UV-5R which I want to use to monitor radio traffic on 169.038MHz. Receive only, not transmit. According to the specs this should be possible, but the radio will not allow me to programme that frequency. A Google search has shown me that apparently some of these radios were shipped without that frequency band (136-174MHz) enabled, and that Chirp should allow me to reprogramme my handset to enable this. Currently the only range available is 400-520Mhz. I have downloaded Chirp and am waiting on a cable to allow me to connect the handset to the computer. If this reprogramming is possible would someone be able to tell me how to do it? Preferably in pretty basic steps, because although I'm reasonably tech-savvy and can hold my own with phone and computer apps like video editing etc I have never reprogrammed a radio and wouldn't know where to start. I had just finished a session with another ham where I explained CTCSS on several radios. I thought that the UV-5s showed + or -, like the others. I was wrong. I just checked them both. It's just as you wrote. I have the BaoFeng UV-5RTP and the BTECH UV-5X3. I program them with chirp, and nary a problem. The images that show both +- on at the same time give me pause. I don't have any experiences with Baofeng, Kenwood, Icom, and Yaesu that has them both on. So...is there some way to do a factory reset on the Baofeng UV-5R8W? Offhand I'd not trust any operation unless I felt sure that the radio was operating 100% iaw mfg intent. When I want to use 2 radios to check, I either place one in another room with the volume up so that I can hear it, or I place it farther away, and use my phone to record a few minutes, giving me time to return to the first radio and send a test message, return and stop the recording. Good day, CHIRP Users! I am having some trouble using CHIRP with some new radios I am trying to program. Simply put, I cannot get the repeater channels to work. I downloaded the .img file from one radio into CHIRP, copied and pasted the repeater configuration from the CHIRP list of repeaters and pasted it into my .img file, then uploaded the .img file into both radios. The radios will not talk to each other through the repeater. I have gory details with screenshots and radio display pictures in the attached .jpg files. Hello, I'm confused about the status of support for the UV-9R Plus. It's not listed as supported, but I've seen people discussing programming it anyway. What I was unable to figure out is which driver they are using? Does anyone know if this model has pitfalls for use with CHIRP? Thanks-

Hello all, I was reading over the Kenwood D74 code in https://github.com/kk7ds/chirp/blob/master/chirp/drivers/thd74.py and noticed something peculiar with the MEM_FORMAT specification. Looking closely at the channel information starting at offset 0x4000, by my math each of the channels takes up 40 bytes. This, combined with the 16 bytes of padding for each "group" places 6 channels in one 256 byte page, preventing channels from spanning pages makes sense to me. Then, there are 210 groups/pages. This is where things get odd. 210 * 256 = 53760, plus the offset of 0x4000 places the end of this region at 70144 (0x11200), which overlaps with the "names" section that starts at offset 0x10000. Am I missing something? Thanks, Jacob

[chirp_users] Problem with Baofeng settings

I have had three other Baofeng UV-5R radio and had no problems programming with Chirp. I’m using the latest Mac Chirp version. But, I just received a new UV5R, and, after downloading from the radio, creating a frequency list, and then uploading, I’m not able to get to the settings page. I get a blank page and an error message. (See attached.) I tried a menu “reset all” and a three-button “factory reset” to no avail. Any ideas? Hello and thanks for running this list and providing CHIRP! I've picked up a Baofeng GT-3WP (and have 2 more coming in the mail) and overall they seem to work well after being flashed with CHIRP, I've noticed a couple issues though. 1. only 6 character channel names! 2. the 'B' or lower channel is set incorrectly compared to the intended setting in CHIRP. Has anyone else flashed this model recently? I'm curious if my experience is unique and if I should submit bugs on the issue tracker. Thanks-

Hello again, I obtained a pair of brand new Baofeng UV-9R Pro units a few months ago and promptly flashed one with CHIRP. Unfortunately it seems that flashing the unit causes some kind of strange problem with squelch. I've seen this referenced a few times elsewhere when searching the problem, forum posts, Amazon reviews etc, though I don't know if this happens with all units or just some (and would love to hear info from anyone who's flashed them). Observations, hopefully somewhat accurate: 1. After flashing the radio with CHIRP, when it is tuned to a continuous channel such as NOAA weather radio, the squelch cuts in and out so badly that the radio is more or less unusable. 2. The radio, before flashing, and after factory reset, reliably receives the same channel without squelch problems when placed in the same location, which indicates that the problem is not one of low signal or interference. 3. Setting the squelch to 0 in the menu does not have a positive effect on the problem. 4. The squelch problem can be temporarily "cured" by pressing one of the buttons, e.g. the menu button. At this point, the squelch will perform normally for several seconds before going back to the broken behavior, in the case of the menu button, possibly when the button press "times out". Has anyone else noticed this or know of a fix or workaround? I am happy to assist debugging if desired. Just trying to see if there is anything I've missed before opening an issue.
