[chirp_users] Confusion about uploading .img file to radio

I have successfully downloaded, modified and uploaded memory settings. I thought that I could save such a file, and then use it for a subsequent upload if that became necessary. What I did: I used what I had saved from a previous download, modified it, and then attempted to upload it. I got an error: Failed to communicate with radio: Radio did not ack block 0 Can I only upload the same file that I downloaded? If that's the case, why would one save a file? Thanks, Peter KO6R

I have been trying to program a VX5R with no success, I have tried 2 different types of USB cables and 2 different types of programs, chirp being one of them. I am able to read from the radio but when I go to write to the radio I get a comm error message. Has anyone else run into this problem? 73 John K2IZ

I finally got the Windows self extracting (.exe) version of the Chirp LiveCD updated on the website. Both the .iso and the .exe versions contain the 27 August Chirp-daily. If you are using this as a LiveUSB and have updated Chirp with the Chirp Updater script, there is no need to download this version. In fact, you probably have a newer Chirp-daily. http://sourceforge.net/projects/chirplivecd/ I had a request to include ORCA on the next release. Unfortunately, I will unable to make that happen. The ChirpLiveCD uses XFCE and ORCA does not run natively on it. I don't have the bandwidth to download the required files to make it work. Perhaps in a few months when I return home I will be able to include it. Bob

I have CHIRP running on a desktop under 10.8.4. Now, I would like to run it on an older laptop running OS 10.6.8, to take in the field to program other folks in our group. I have attempted to install the Python runtime package. The install window comes up, but it it stalls on the second step (Destination Select). The "Continue" button is greyed out. I can go no further with it, and, yes, CHIRP doesn't run. Is there a different runtime version I need? Jim K6MIO

The only time I have had problems using Chirp is when I inadvertantly was using the wrong Prolific Driver. A number of leads/programs use various drivers from Prolific and the PC very often gets them confused. Including me! The most recent one being for the CW lead. Regards John G0PJU

Heck, it's not even 11pm yet! I was able to download and upload successfully, making sure to select the non-US model of the 897. I did discover along the way that one of the 232-USB cables is bad, but that was a gift (also this morning) from a fellow cleaning out junk. OK, I am now a certifiable happy camper, and my gratitude to all of you who aided and abetted my cause today. This ol' guy is now smilin' broadly :-))))) Peter KO6R

RT systems makes great programming software, yes not "freeware" but it works and also ties to the ARRL Repeater cd and Rfinder seamlessly. I use several of their discs and have not had any problems. [chirp_users] Baffled by CHIRP

Hello: I'm a newbie to this group. I just was loaned a cable that works perfectly for my friend who has an FT-7900. I have an FT-897. Questions: 1. Is there a problem with compatibility with the cable? The indicator does glow red when I'm plugged into a USB port. 2. I downloaded CHIRP to both my ubuntu 10.04 drive and my XP drive. On the Ubuntu version, there is no option for FT-897. That's version 0.2.1. On the XP drive, there is that option. However, for both, I get an error on the radio after I've hit transmit. On Ubuntu, I'm told that the header couldn't be read. No message on the XP version, but no luck either -- same error shows up on the radio. Now what? 3. Tried to figure out how to get an updated version for Ubuntu, so that I could find the FT-897 listed. Couldn't find that. Feeling like a total dummy at this point, and disappointed that I couldn't just plug it in and go for broke. Any help greatly appreciated. Peter KO6R

I have an ic-2100, Icom USB OPC-478 FTDI (Valley Enterprises), driver from ftdichip.com and Windows XP setup. The usb serial port is on com 5 (I checked in device manager). With the ic 1200 in the clone mode, asking chirp to download from the radio, clicking OK and pushing the smwmw button on the radio, I get “An error has occurred. Failed to communicate with the radio unexpected response from radio”. I even tried without putting the radio in the clone mode......same response.....also tried two other computers (one XP and one Windows 7). When I ask the program to detect the radio I get....”An error has occurred. Unable to get radio model.” Am I missing a step or two or doing things wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Jean N2VQA

[chirp_users] Problems Connecting Baofeng UV-5R to Software

I'm running Chirp on OS 10.8.4, trying to program a bunch of radios (Baofeng UV-5R) for our Civil Defense volunteer CERT communicator groups. I am aware that there are some issues with certain cables. So far, I purchased two cables (from different vendors), most recently Wouxum-US. In all cases, I am unable to connect to any of the radios using CHIRP (Mac) or the Windows (XP) with the Baofeng code. I've used the drivers with both that came from the Wouxum site. In both Mac and Windows, the software comes up and presents itself. When I attempt to read the radio, after a pause, I get a failed to connect message. Can you give me direction as to how best to fix this?

As others have said, you need to insure a firm mechanical connection with the Baofeng. I put a rubber band around the combination to insure the adapter fully bottoms. If I don't do that, or hold pressure, I get lots of errors. 73s, Alan WA4SCA

if you can read from radio-your cables are ok. i have received errors when trying to read to radio-retry-sometimes 2nd or 3rd try will read to radio, so keep trying. do not stop on first error message. not sure what the quirk is. have reloaded drivers etc. and does not seem to make difference. have learned to work around it. 73 jim kf8sj (we are now up to 11 units in our local vfd all working quite well)

Greetings All! I am new to CHIRP, but I was able to easily install the Mac software onto my MacBook and to install the driver to use the Icom OPC-478UC USB cloning cable. I was then able to "Download From Radio" from my IC-80AD. The memories load fine. However, the Repeater List does not appear ... so I do not see anywhere my DR mode settings ... which is critical to using the radio on D-Star. Perhaps I am missing something? I would really appreciate any help anyone can give, and if this was addressed previously I apologise in advance -- I did a manual search of the archive going back a year and did not see anything helpful. One issue I did notice is that the IC-80AD is not in the list of models available (even though it is listed as a supported radio) when you try to Download ... and the DETECT thinks it is an ID-80H .... not sure if that is meaningful or not. Hi there, I am new to the group and have also used chirp. We import wouxuns into South Africa and the following happened to a customer of ours. He loaded an image file and burned it into 3 radios, the problem is that there is calibration data that is unique to the radio in the image file, so he destroyed 2 radios. HI, I have a Yaesu FT-8000R dual band radio that I would like to help get supported in CHIRP. I can loan the radio and cable. The radio is modified for wide RX/TX. If useful, I can provide a PDF of the user manual & (only) 23 pages of the service manual. The USB FTDI cable is from Valley Enterprises "Yaesu USB FT-7800 FTDI 10 feet". Also known as part#: RPC-Y7800-U-3M. I believe that this is the right cable, and it does fit into the back of the radio, but I am not 100% sure. I got the idea that the cable for the 7800 is the same as for the 8000 because RT Systems offers the same cable for 9 different Yaesu radios including the 8000 & 7800. http://www.rtsystemsinc.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=USB-29B I tried using the CHIRP setting for Yaesu 7800 to download from this FT-8000R without success. CHIRP is working great for me now! Whoo-ho! :-) I'll have to remember that if the speaker/mic doesn't work, to switch menu #9 ("SP/MIC JACK") back from "PC" to "SP/MIC". I see that CHIRP doesn't doesn't do "upload" to Kenwood THF6A, it's even easier that that. You just download from radio, then edit it live onscreen, and any changes are immediately sent back into the radio. Wow, that's easy! I also like being able to "Exchange Memories" to move them around. I also love being able to save a copy of all the freqs from the radio to the computer as a backup. This so so cool! I can hardly wait to use CHIRP with another radio which I consider much more difficult to program from the dashboard. I have updated the ISO version of Chirp LiveCD. I have not uploaded the .exe version yet. It takes me about 30 hours per upload due to my extremely slow internet connection. I will try to get the exe uploaded in the next few days. Like the previous updates, the only change is the new Chirp Daily (27 August) is included. If you are using a LiveUSB setup and have updated it using the Chirp Updater, there is no need to download this version. It depends on which radio but on most it is turn the radio, with cable attached, on and you're in programming mode. I can pull the menu to "Download from Radio" then it asks me to select the port, make & model of radio. Still a blank window. It does not ask me where I would like to save anything. THe radio doesn't seem to be doing anything either. When I plug in the cable first, then power on the radio, it goes to the 2 line A/B display with a memory name repeater on the bottom line & blinking PF# on the top line. This also locks the keypad. You can't even power off without unplugging the cable. CHIRP does the same thing, regardless. That is it displays the dialog box for what port, then the CHRIP window dims briefly then comes back as front window in a couple of seconds. I downloaded the daily build just in case, but it does the same thing. If I disconnect the FTDI cable, before launching CHIRP & trying to download from radio, then CHIRP reports the port does not exist. So that seems to indicate that the drivers are installed since it only gets that error when the cable is disconnected. I have tried plugging the FTDI cable into both the keyboard hub and directly into the computer. No difference. The step is the channel spacing amount. You can set this on many radios from 25 to 2.5 MHz. When you turn a tuning know in VFO mode, this is the amount the radio changes frequency by. If the radio's step is too high, it will not allow entry of some frequencies and will do something (variable by radio) to go to the next higher or lower frequency which complies with the step value you have set. Ø Your package index files are stale. Always run "apt-get update" before "apt-get upgrade". Trouble is, as was in the original (ornate) message, this was an AUTOMATIC update. I did not run anything. I am not sure what to run to do an update yet. I have not gotten to that part of the book yet. This window came up and I let it run and thats what it said (http://ppa.launchpad.net/dansmith/chirp-snapshots/ubuntu/pool/main/c/chirp- daily/chirp-daily_20130822~precise~1_amd64.deb 404 Not Found) I did try the two command (with the required SUDO added in front) and they did stuff. What I was trying to report that the automatic update failed. Thanks for the manual entries. I can fall back on these when the automatic fails again. Mike

I need some help here please. I have LinuxMint 14 installed on my laptop. Mint sees my USB cable as ttyUSB0. However, all Chirp sees is tty0 and above, no USB anything, thus I can't begin to connect to anything until I can get Chirp to recognize my USB ports. I just bought a 2nd UV-82, and CHIRP reads it but will not display any data, if I try to write to it I get a unsupported version error. I have another UV-82 that works perfectly with CHIRP. Checking the radios I see the following firmwares #1 - BF8210 (works with CHIRP) #2 - B82S21 (Does not work with CHIRP) any ideas?

Yesterday I was trying to program some Baofeng H777 radios using the same cable that I use to program my Baofeng BF-888S, UV-5R and various Wouxun radios. Try as I could, I kept getting a bad connection error. I changed cables and everything worked perfectly. Try a different cable. I see others are able to us Chirp with the UV-5RA but I cannot and I can only guess why. I also have the UV-3R and I have no problem with it. When I select which radio to program the listing for UV-5 is all there is for the UV-5 series. I have the proper programming cable, turn the radio on, then try to download from the radio, and it tries but times out and I am told the radio is not responding. I am running Chirp under Ubuntu and I keep everything updated, including 'daily-build' for Chirp. One thing bothers me though; when I look at the "about" and check the revision level of Chirp, it shows 20130802 (8/2/2013) yet when I try to update, it says I have the latest version. I am not sure about that one. Anyhow, the bottom line is my Chirp works great with the UV-3R but not with the UV-5RA, using the proper programming cables of course. i have found that ocassionally, while trying to send to radio, i get a failed condition on first try. second try works normally not a problem now, but was distracting when first occured. thought i was no doing something properly. this is with plug fully seated, and downloads from radio properly. try try again? 73 jim kf8sj

I am learning fast. Got the PPA attached and the daily build installed via kind help and the website. Then hooked up the USB dongle and it would not work - no drivers, of course, after first plugging it in. I found somewhere to issue "DMESG" in terminal. I have no idea what that is but it was suggested by a web site to get the drivers installed and it got the correct drivers from somewhere, first try. Magic abounds!! Then try to download from the radio and got a message error 13 that I don't have permissions to ttyUSB0. Another website said to issue: |sudo chmod 0777 /dev/ttyUSB0 That was the last bit to make it work. Got a download. Did not try to re-upload but I suspect it will work. Thanks to all helpers. Happier now. Chipping away at the Ubuntu mystery. So much to learn. Oh, special thanks to the packager of Chirp in the PPA. After some web searching - No, I don't know what DMESG did to help with the USB driver. It seems to be just a listing program with no connection to installing drivers. Maybe it was a coincidence of timing that the driver was not there and after DMESG was there but it would not work before issuing the command and did work after only issuing that command. If anyone has any insight, that is for another forum, I guess. Not directly related to CHIRP. Anyway, CHIRP seems good on Ubuntu. Thanks to all group members for this program. Mike Morrow
