Anyone using the USB to Baofeng /Wouxun and a dozen others named Chinese radios cable with PL2303 chip from radioshop888.com (and possible a lot of other retailers who try to best they can retail genuine parts) will find that their Mountain Lion driver will work after they upgrade to Mavericks. Now, I cannot guarantee this to everyone obviously. Too many variables. But you all have at least one guinea pig out here to put up his or her OS-X system up for grabs with an upgrade. And Mavericks if you wandered doesn't really feel different from the previous build. If you want the upgrade better have a goof fast connection, took me a while at 2.20 MB/s to download 5.29 gigs. Then it's atl east another hour and a half to install.

[chirp_users] Keyboard not working

Hi! I downloaded the LiveCD for Chirp and tried running it on my older 13" macbook. The keyboard driver doesn't load properly and I can't use the keys. Only the embedded numeric keypad seems to work at all. The delete key words, but not enter. It's pretty weird. Has anyone else encountered this? Is there a fix for it? [chirp_users] UV-B5 Settings issue

So two issues. I am using the latest Daily with 2 new B5s that work fine. 1 - I can download from the radio.... When I do the channel tab is populated but the Settings tab is blank. If I enable Developer mode I can see data for the settings but I wouldn't want to edit it there. 2 - in the Memory (channels) tab their are 4 settings columns missing, BCL Reverse Duplex PT ID and Compander missing. That would mean that one would need to select each channel and use the right click Edit function on each channel individualy. What am I doing wrong? Use a Mac to program BF-888 and UV-82 radios. All works well in downloading and uploading programming to radios, however after programming the BF-888 and I shutdown CHIRP my Mac becomes unresponsive to keyboard input. Computer will not shutdown or restart. I have to do a hard shutdown on the computer to reset everything. When I program the UV-82 the computer behaves itself when I close CHIRP and I encounter no problems.

[chirp_users] Error importing stock Marine Ch

I get this error when I try to import the stock Marine channels into my BF UV-5RE+ "There was an error during import: list index out of range" Behind that error box is another box that says "Please wait Preparing Memory List...." I open chirp, read from radio, choose Radio, Import from Stock Config, choose Marine VHF Channels and that's when the error occurs. I've used this method to load the NOAA, MURS and FRS/GMRS channels with out issue. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit. Thx Greg

I will play nice... I promise...nothing more to add. I have had no issues importing from databases like repeaterbook on 4 models of radios. While not identical to canned data, they are similar in some ways.

Tim at Yaesu tech support says that Chirp "burns out" EEPROMS on Yaesu radios. He says that results in the radios locking up. It was not clear whether he was saying that the EEPROM was destroyed or just programmed into a state that the radio would no longer work. I'm guessing that this might have been a problem during Chirp development and is no longer the case. I see that there are several steps involved in programming the Yaesu radios with Chirp. Does failure to follow the steps precisely create a risk to the usability of the radio? Sorry if this has been discussed before. Tim assures me that he makes no money by recommending RT Systems stuff. I sure appreciate the universality of Chirp.... support of multiple computing platforms (Mac in particular!), multiple radios! The value is huge since what holds back many beginners is the difficulty of programming in the channels!

Users, I'm a complete newbie to Ham and Chirp. Fairly savvy wrt to software. This is the first time connecting UV-5R to Mac. Chirp starts fine and I do have Python installed. When starting up Chirp, debug.log spits out... Icon /usr/share/pixmaps/chirp.png not found Initialized MacOS support /Applications/chirp-0.3.1.app/Contents/MacOS/../Resources/chirp/chirpw:128: PangoWarning: error opening config file '../Resources/etc/pango/pangorc': No such file or directory Two items from that output... - I don't see a chirp.png in the /Applications/chirp-0.3.1.app tree. - I don't see a pangorc in the /Applications/chirp-0.3.1.app tree. Re: Yaesu programming My experience with the FT-897D is that the engineering is poor. I never used chirp with the rig. It would simply die after a few months, sent it to them to repair and it kept going dead a few months after each repair. I use it now for a book-end. The lesson I learned is to not purchase any Yaesu gear. The techs fix symptoms - not the cause Chirp works well. The trick is getting a good cable and the correct drivers for the cable. The other point is to read the rig's memory to ascertain that everything shows signs of working properly before attempting to write to the rig. I programmed 2 Yaesu Radios with Chirp My old VX-5R no problems My FT-817 I uploaded then downloaded and then no more reading or writing was possible. I tried master reset on FT-817 but no computer programming is possible now. I can enter channels manually. Is this a Chirp fault? I doubt it. I use Chirp to program Wouxun, Boafeng, Yaesu VX-5. I love it it's great Always use the driver which came with the USB cable and don't let windows update the driver when it wants to and you will have no cable related problems. 73, Bob VK2BYF --

There is one thing to get this motorolas to work properly has a repeater: reduce the power to 1/4 of a watt up to 5 watts and use it to drive an amplifier. then you have a 100% duty repeater. I can offer a loaner and something else. Alex/KG4TRV

Hello, I just purchase a UV-5R+ and was trying to program it. I'm using the chirp-daily respository version. USB Cable: : Prolific Technology Inc. pl2303 3-2:1.0: pl2303 device: /dev/ttyUSB0 UV-5R+ Firmware: BFB297 (as reported via power-on) I get the typical unable to connect to radio, but when it is trying to clone I see on the HT the "Welcome...." message and then I get the timeout message. As for the cable, it does seem to be full seated. I have pressed and held the plug in to make sure and get the same results. First is there a debug mode I can turn on to capture the hand shake between the computer and the UV-5R+. I figure this would help the list. Tony

Hi Again Ok, something that may be wrong with my load of Vista. First on a standard windows download and installation of Chirp used to show a nice serial plug for an Icon. I don't see it, should I? Now if I should see it on the desktop panel and don't anyone have any ideas of why? Marty kd8bj

[chirp_users] Connecting issues to VX5R solved

Hi Thanks to all that have tried to help me solve this issue. Turns out to have been a slight operator error, I think. After getting the correct driver installed, I did mention that I saw the com port number in device manager. I also was not getting the second window but that was solved by the new build I installed. On my XP system when the window with com port and other choices showed the com port was populated, on the Vista system is was not. So I added "Com 3" in the slot, vendor and radio, attempted and failed, many times. The solution turns out to be I should have entered for port, "com3" which worked fine. Things on the Vista are getting somewhat better but still not like it was before the reload of the OS but progressing. At least now I can make changes to the memories of my Vx5R, FT817 and FT2800 fromt he PC I may be portable with. Again thanks to all who have responded with ideas. Marty kd8bj

[chirp_users] Strange Situation

I have the TYT TH-UV5R. When I use Chirp software to program the radio the radio connects to the computer and when I try to upload from the radio to the computer the light on the radio flashes and appears to upload the data to the program. I see where there is a tab showing the TYT upload but nothing shows (no radio frequency contents) in the program and I don't see the data in any program folder. Can someone kindly point me in the right direction in order to use Chirp. thank you kindly Paul

Hi Well help in Chirp doesn't have anything, went to the web site, on FAQ about my USB/Serial adapter which has worked in the past isn't as yet. I have the correct driver for Vista and loaded. In the device manager I see the Com port 3. My issue is I don't ever get asked to enter the Com port. My Rig is the VX5R and according to the FAQ for Yaesu it says to put the rig in Clone mode, then launch Chirp and click on "Download from rig". When I do that I get nothing. I may have to go back to using my other PC which has Linux, or use the VX commander. Any ideas? Marty kd8bj

I have my CAT cable now working in my virtual Win7 (running on VirtualBox), so I don't have to use a separate computer when working with the radio. You need the 2.3.0.0 Driver to work right and no there is not a key code sequence to program it with. Just hook up the cable to it. plug it into the usb. Load the software and tell it to read from the radio on the comport you have set for the cable. Then program it and save it then write back to the radio. It will take care of it all automatically. I need help getting chirp to down load, extract in to XP. Have down load to XP desk top , c & my documents, Can't find an execute file to get chip to load up. Have z7 zip on desk top to. How do you get the BoaFeng UV 5RAX to scan? It's not on the menu There is no way to access the blue key functions, one of which is scan. What is the secret? There are YouTube of the radio in scan mode, but no instructions Thanks Dave NØHMI

ok, I just sent this directly to tom. It appears that mine is a PX-888 (vhf only). I seriously wish there was some support for it in the daily build. Also, since I am blind and on a limited income, I can't just go out and purchase another radio just to have it taken apart. anyway, I really need to be able to program my radio without having to depend on others (when they have time, etc.). Also, I just sent out an email to Kevin Lim (at puxingradio) asking for either the command set or just to make their program accessible to me. I don't expect a response (its been that way with chinese companies for a long time). This question must have been asked a million times already, but as I'm a new HAM in the Netherlands (since last Monday), I ask it one more time. I have a Yaesu FT-857D (US model) and a cheap Chinese USB cable that I bought from Ebay. I have insalled HamRadioDeluxe and this program can communicate with the radio over COM3. The cable is recognized as USB-SERIAL CH340 (COM3) in Win7. hello there, ok, I have tried both the stable release version that came with ubuntu 13.04 and the daily build produced yesterday. both aren't reading my radio correctly. on the stable release, only every 3rd memory location (frequency) is visible. On the development version, it shows values that are supposed to be in other fields (such as PL tone being in the frequency field, etc.). unfortunately, I can't seem to make sense of how its arranged (I use a screen reader here as I am blind) and even in Braille, it displays much the same. I need to be able to program this radio for some public service events and I can't do so in either OS X or windows (using the windows binaries provided by the manufacturer is equally as useless under jaws). Chirp there just displays a blank application screen. Under OS x, it displays some of the information, but none of the memory channels or other fields in that table. I really would like to be able to use this package, but it seems to be beyond my reach right now. Also, as I am not a coder (my skills are in systems administration, security and database management), I can't just go in and change how the thing operates. lastly, I don't have any method by which I can capture a screen output on the linux machine to show what is going on. I also don't have a lot of money to spare (as I live on disability), so sending a radio to be tested for development is out of my reach (and I only have the one radio). Now, considering that I am a ham and also blind, I am really in a very small population group. Still, I would consider it a great favor if someone *(anyone) would help to make this project more accessible for those like me (there are several thousand blind hams in the US alone). Now I have tried getting hold of the manufacturer in china, only to be completely ignored (I have 2 strikes against me already: 1. I am american, 2. I am blind). so, how about it? anyone up to the challenge? -eric

ok, I have chirp installed on a ubuntu 13.04 box. Its operation appears to be a bit inconsistent. Sometimes it will run and display the program frame. other times it just sits there and is invisible to the orca screen reader. the second issue is that it can't seem to obtain permissions to read from the com port (which is a prolific device on a USB dongle). I have confirmed that the device is loaded and working properly (I can set up a terminal session between 2 machines with it). However, all attempts (that are visible to me) result in the error "cannot read from device. Permission denied". I have tried running it from a terminal session using sudo and it won't even become visible to my screen reader. In case you are wondering, I am blind. So, I need a little help here. now, I have made sure that my user is administrator on the machine, so there shouldn't be this problem. suggestions? -eric

ok, I got the port permissions issue resolved (its a bug in the initial system setup and I wasn't added to dial out). However, now I have this problem: radio: PX-777 vendor: puxingradio port: /dev/ttysusb0 downloading profile from radio… error: radio did not ACK first command. ok, so how do I get around this? The version of chirp I am using is on uBuntu 13.04 and I don't get have a development environment setup. do I have to get one of the daily builds to make this work? -eric

Just bought a radio , looked at site to download software ..got to the point on the download where it said this would make changes to my computer that is where I stopped.
