[chirp_users] saving settings other than just channel memories?

greetings everyone, I am wondering if the chirp program saves more than just the channel memory fields to a csv file? I would like to have all settings from my UV5R saved so that I may use a text editor to make my modifications with. Its a lot simpler than trying to navigate the interface in Linux. Inquiring minds want to know! -eric

ok, I am using this program on Linux as it isn't screen reader friendly anywhere else. here's a couple of issues: 1. When importing from data sources, I cannot check or uncheck individual items 2. I cannot simply shift values down one channel (moving 3 to 2 , etc.). I use Ubuntu 13 precise (LTS version) with all packages updated. I also use ORCA screen reader as I am blind. SO, any chance of changing this so it works a little more nicely? btw, I am not the only blind ham around here that may have to use software to program a chinese radio (or even one of the others for that matter).. A lot of us (and there are quite a few thousand of us here in the US) would certainly appreciate it if the developer would address the accessibility issue on windows or OS X (as not many of us use Linux). Those of us blind hams who do use Linux would certainly appreciate a few small changes in the interface to make it a little more screen reader (using ORCA or emacspeak) friendly. there is an FAQ here: http://empowermentzone.com/NonvisualDevelopmentFAQ.htm there is an entry for python scripting there that would make it a lot easier to understand (and setup for accessible UI structures.. in fact, heres the FAQ in question: /Quote What tools are recommended for developing with the Python language? The Chirp LiveCD is now one year old and I have just returned from yet another trip to Afghanistan. I should now be able to update it more often than I have in the past. A new version is now available for download. This version has the latest Chrip-daily (18 Dec 2013) and the interface has been updated. I still recommend using the LiveCD as a LiveUSB. This allows you to easily update to the newest Chirp-daily and save your files. If you have been using previous versions as a LiveUSB there is no need to update to this version, however you may want to consider doing so because of the cleaner look. Thank you to those on the dev list who provided information on your programming cables. On my Baofeng Chirp files I have a "power" column available. This doesn't appear to be available for the Anytone 5888UV. Is it possible to bring this in? The Anytone defaults to full power unless I manually set it to a lower power setting and whenever I switch channels it goes back to high. Just obtained new UV-B5. Works OK rf-wise. Installed todays’s daily 20131218 for Mac. Running Mac OS 10.9.1. Python bits are installed and PL2303 driver. Chirp loads and I can select the correct radio and port. When I try the initial download from the new radio I get the Cloning window then "An error has occurred Radio did not ack programming mode.” Any suggestions, please? 73 Martin RH G8BHC

I am new to the mailing list, so I apologize if this topic has been covered before. I recently installed the latest daily build on Ubuntu 12.04. I am connecting to a Kenwood TH6A using a FTDI cable. My problem is that I am denied access to the port unless I run Chirp from the terminal as root. Is there a solution to this issue? Thanks, Patrick

Greeting to the group I have been trying to help a friend out with his FT8800R and connection to Chirp. He is running a Mac Mini that I be leave is pre Intel. He purchased the dedicated USB to radio cable from a link on the Chirp web site. Here is the problem, he launches chirp OK, it recognizes his cable, he places his radio into clones mode, but he keeps getting an error message which states: "could not open port/dev/cu.usbserial-RTWHKYXO: [Errno2] No such file or directory: '/dev/cu.usbserial-RTWHKYXO'" Any help would be appreciated. A friend and I have Baofeng H/Ts that we have been using for the past couple of weeks. They are all programmed with a Chirp file he put together with all of the local repeaters, plus a couple of simplex channels he uses for his church security. The security channels are on channel 0, 1 and 2. When I copied the Chirp file into my Anytone mobile, I couldn't hit the repeaters until I figured out all the channel numbers were offset by +1 number on the Anytone. Apparently the Anytone doesn't want to have a channel #0. Once I understood what happened it was easy enough to offset the channel numbers in the Anytone file to get them where they were supposed to be. I was wondering if this was normal for some radio memory registers to start with "0" and some with "1". Also my Anytone Chirp file sometimes hangs up or freezes, while I haven't had any problems with the Baofeng Chirp files. It usually freezes during a cut and paste operation or during an import or operation. Not a huge problem but sometimes annoying. Should I be downloading new daily Chirp builds? Last night I got a chance to test importing saved .img files from my Wouxun into an Anytone radio. For the most part it works well. I also tried it reverse. .img from Anytone to Wouxun KGUV6D imported but didn't write the first 5 lines which were all public service. Seems it didn't understand the duplex settings. I went back to the Anytone, .img made changes in Chirp then imported it back into the Wouxun. That time it worked. I also uploaded the same .img file to the Anytone and the changes in the settings really didn't matter for those frequencies since I don't transmit on them, tx is actually disabled for all public service. Se yes this is a good way to share your files back and forth if you have different radios. You might need to make some changes because of incompatible settings but that's not a big deal.

Sorry if this topic has been beat to death. I just received my Anytone AT5888uv and am attempting to program it via Chirp. I installed the USB driver from the CD, and apparently my computer can talk to the radio as I can clone from the radio into Chirp. What I want to do is load some existing Chirp files I have from my Baofeng UV5R radios onto the Anytone. When I try to do so, the drop down box to upload the file won't move from the Baofeng. [chirp_users] Issues w/ getting UV-5R to communicate w/ CHIRP on a Mac

All, I'm relatively new to radios, and definitely new to the list - I throw myself at your mercy. I'm trying to program a set of Baofeng UV-5Rs to use the Motorola frequencies used by a few other race teams we run with. I'm using a Mac, OSX 10.8.5, and have already installed the PL2023 USB-Serial driver successfully (I believe). I obtained the driver from: http://www.prolific.com.tw/US/ShowProduct.aspx?p_id=229&pcid=41 I've also confirmed that the USB-serial driver appears to be installed correctly, as described here: http://plugable.com/2011/07/12/installing-a-usb-serial-adapter-on-mac-os-x I now see '/dev/cu.usbserial' in the Port field when attempting to download from the radio (which I didn't see before installing the driver). However, when I actually attempt to download, the 'Cloning' modal shows for a few seconds w/o progress, then I see the "Radio did not respond" error. The USB cable is an "official" Baofeng cable that I received with the radios from a trusted reseller, and is definitely seated correctly. I've tried using different USB ports, turning the radio on/off, restarting several times, etc. but just cannot get the radio to talk to my Mac. I'm really hoping you guys can help; we have a race this weekend and if I can't get the comms working, I'm in a world of crap. Thanks, Colby

Many thanks for the CHIRP Program, and some great CHIRP e-mail suggestions, I'm all programmed and, surprisingly, communicating with other hams...Lotta fun! (note, I tried, and didn't have much success using the AT programming software)...being able to cut & paste is great!)...yes, I played the "port" game & finally won! *Question*: *will CHIRP eventually be able to program AnyTone radio settings ?*...just asking. Also, thanks for the *ease of using* CHIRP to program my BaoFeng UV-5R+ radios. (used in SAR) *Thanks again, for all you guys at CHIRP...and all you do for us newbies!Al ... I know this is straying off topic but as usual I'm off topic anyway...heh But considering the popularity of this radio and using Chirp with it I thought I'd make a brief comment. With Set menu item #34 TDR AB setting it to OFF when switched it gives you a split second to tune the inactive display and tune it be it VFO or channel mode. If set to either A or B, it is impossible to go from the priority A or B when active to the other non-priority display. One example: if VFO A is on a constant signal like the NWS 162.400 but you want to switch to and tune VFO B you have a half a second before the focus switches back to A. As long as you keep tuning the focus will be B. As soon as you stop it jumps back to A. This is in the #34 menu TDR AB = OFF menu. But now way you can tune the other display if the priority is given to the opposite display.

Picture someone picking up a radio for the first time (never had one of these in their lives), and they come across this table from the link in the wiki. How are they supposed to understand all that without some sort of legend? As a certain pointed eared Starfleet officer would say, that's illogical. There's nothing to suggest floating a mouse over anything for a description. Perhaps that should be added to the sentence that introduces this table as an explanation. It would be better than nothing. I was thinking of pointing to this table in the individual radio articles so a newcomer could find out the basics about the radio - including whether this radio supported clone, live or file (what is that?) processing for updating their radio's memories. I'm in the midst of creating a table that will list each of the radios that are on the wiki's first page, and whether they work in clone or live mode. This is yet another question that newcomers who have picked up their radios for the first time are likely to have. I have Libre Office so I should be able to read Word documents, but it would be simpler if it were a text document (Word tends to put all sorts of strange formatting characters that most Wikis choke on - really messes the formatting up). [chirp_users] Icom IC-T90A: Rolling an OPC-478 cable with a CP-2102 USB board

I've successfully made cables for both a Baofeng UV-3R and UV-5R using a CP-2102 USB board. Total cash outlay for each, about $3. Now I'm moving on to my real radio, an Icom IC-T90A. I found the following info: http://highfields-arc.co.uk/constructors/other/opc478.htm#usb But it has not produced fruit with the Icom CS-T90A software. Specifically, it errors "Cannot access COM port." If I remove the cable / diode from the header and jump TX and RX pins together, the CS-T90A software responds differently, indicating "No answer from the transceiver." So, I know the software and the CP-2102 are talking. There's a note in the instructions above about connecting the CTS and RTS pins together... which I can't do on the 2102 board I have. The pins are on the IC of course, but not connected to anything on the board. The diode I used appears to be good and electrically, the cable seems sound. Any ideas? BTW, I found a treasure trove of info on T90A programming, courtesy of Eric Behr at NIU. Hey all, I finally got so my computer would recognize the Baofeng UV-5Rdownload cable, and when I went to Chirp and I select "down load from computer", it says "cloning" but only downloads one frequency, i.e., 136,025000....... I found the Miklor site and am attempting to use their instructions but they don't seem to be very clear or detailed. I looked for a Baofeng UV-5R site that would provide customer support, but couldn't find anything. Also, when I look for my firmware version it says BFB297, and it says to go to the settings section to see your real firmware version #, but when I got there, it doesn't have any numbers listed. It then says I have to download the daily build, but when I do that, it doesn't seem to want to install correctly. It is a zipped file and when I unzip it, it doesn't seem to do anything. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Ray

I checked the radio support page (which I should have done before I complained) and it shows the 707 is only supported for 2m/440, which explains the errors. Is there any particular reason for this? When I download from my Kenwood TM-G707 I get a error with any channel that has a frequency outside of the 2m/440 ham bands. The 707 has a fairly wide RX and there a lot of bands it can receive (but not transmit). Is there a CHIRP setting for this? Hi All, I'm trying to write to a FT-60r using the latest stable build and the latest dev build (2013-11-21). Using both versions of software, it seems that the radio is failing to receive on the correct frequency, even though Chirp shows the correct data was entered. Example: Saving 477.3875 with a step of 12.5khz is being received by the radio as 477.380. I verified this by changing the memory settings from Alpha to Freq. A frequency of 477.380 is displayed in that memory location. BUT - the strange thing is, if I read the configuration back via Chirp, it reads that 477.3875 was actually programmed into the radio in that memory location! I'm just picking this single frequency as an example, but it seems that every frequency I programmed into the radio is "off". If anyone can help me out here, that would be great! To start to create the beginner's guide, probably the easiest place to start- because it's likely the process is the same for all of the file formats - are the import functions. To review, according to the main page on the wiki, CHIRP can import data from; a. EVE (application for the VX5R) b. Kenwood HMK files c. Kenwood Commercial ITM files d. Icom .icf files e. ARRL Travel Plus .tpe files f. VX5 Commander Files g. VX7 Commander Files If I could get a sample file of each of these, I could start documenting the import process. It would also be very helpful to know if there's anything special about these formats that needs to be tweaked - anything at all - before or after the import is completed. It doesn't have to be very big or anything special - if it imports correctly into CHIRP, it's useable. My email is ka3jjz (at) comcast (dot) net After these pages are complete, the next imports to be documented will be the repeaterbook, etc. imports. I'm already somewhat familiar with the RadioReference import (it's a little similar to a Uniden Home Patrol because it uses your zip code as the driver) so that should be pretty simple. Unfortunately since I'm currently on unemployment, buying a radio to document the upload/editing/download functions is a no-go - so if anyone wants to jump in on that, it would be a big help. That's probably the largest part of the job. Even if you're not fully informed about all those functions, getting a starter page for each of those functions will go a long way to identifying what needs to be enhanced to make it complete. My desktop died just recently, so doing this on a puny netbook is something of a challenge... We also need a list of each radio that's on that main page, and whether it's a clone mode or live mode radio. There's 2 ways we could do this (and both are probably just as useful). Put up a table with all the radios on it, and also list that individual radio on its own page, as shown in the template I sent out earlier. I didn't see much about this in the table of radio functions that's already there, so it's yet another point a newcomer might not know about. That won't be too difficult, if someone has that data, I could use this as well. Once all of this is done, then it's time to use the template and start creating a page for each radio. Actually Bob that's really 2 separate issues. I'll let the CHIRP developers comment on putting context (by radio) help into the software. That's a long way off in any case - the wiki has to be greatly enhanced, first, before that could even be considered. It does make sense to me, however. What I was referring to was the way each radio in the wiki would link to the pool of pages. A simple example would be a radio that updates in live mode (and we just saw such an example recently on this list). We would have 1 page (or 1 set of pages) each for uploading, downloading and editing a radio's template (image file). Now if that radio was a live mode one, you don't upload data to it, so the uploading page would not be linked. It would only have links to downloading and editing. There would have to be a note on that radio's page that it was a live mode radio, and that you would need to do a CSV export to save the data you uploaded. Another simple example would be if because of some limitation, CHIRP could not import EVE files for a particular radio. Then in the list of import formats on that radio's page, the EVE page would not be linked. This is what is meant by selecting pages to be linked from a common pool. If a particular function isn't available for some reason, there should be no link to it. This means there should be a little planning in how the wiki pages are named. There should be (some) correlation to the radio driver since it will have to generate the URL. The radio specific pages on the wiki should be in their own name space. I don't know what redmine's capabilities are, the "name space" could be as simple as prepending a prefix like "Radio-" for all of the radio specific help template pages. A Check_For_Updates function would be nice to have, BUT it sounds like implementing it in a way that satisfies everyone would be tricky. Ideally, the function would be configurable so that it could check for updates: - Each time CHIRP starts - Daily - Weekly - Only When The User Clicks a Button Many programs have a setup option similar to this - I know both the video players that I use regularly give be options similar to this. But the Check_For_Updates would also need to recognize that there are different kinds of updates. I would think that if someone were running the Stable version, it should only check for updates of the Stable version. If someone were running a Daily Build, perhaps it should notify them if there is a newer Daily Build (which would happen very often) AND if there is a Stable version newer than their Daily Build
