[chirp_users] TYT TH-UVF1 dual Band Handheld-Expanded Frequency Access

I have a TYT TH-UVF1 dual band handheld and it is supposed to be able to have access to expanded frequencies 136-174 and 400-480. I would like to be able to use for the GMRS which I also have a license for. I was told that the CHIRP software will allow to program these frequencies and it has done so but the radio still will not transmit outside of the amateur bands and I do not receive on the public safety frequencies which I would like to monitor since I am a firefighter and paramedic. If anyone has some advice, it would be appreciated. David

Hi I have several Baofeng radios, most recently added a UV82 (which has a dual PTT button on the radio) On the others when the lapel/speaker mic is connected and the mic PTT is keyed the radio transmits on the currently selected channel either top or bottom. On the UV82 (lapel/speaker mic is not a dual PTT) it *always* seems to transmit on the bottom channel. I've trawled the menus and settings but cant see anything that might control this behaviour. If anyone knows how to change this I'd be very grateful. Trying to use chirp to program new HTs. Reads radio ok, but error message of radio won't respond to write to radio. Happens on both radios. If I use the VIP software (talk about convoluted!) it will write to the radio. I just did 1 local repeater channel thru VIP so see if it would work. Any thoughts or ideas I can try? OK, I’m officially PO’d. I have 4 UV-5R radios. I bought 2 and used chirp to program them. Although I had some difficulty I was able to do it using a ‘kenwood’ cable that a friend had. Now that I’ve bought 2 more I absolutely, positively cannot get them to connect. Sometimes they upload to the program but I cannot download the new set of frequencies. I get so frustrated and mad when I try to do this. It’s so arbitrary and is NOT reliable. Does anyone have any suggestions that might work for me? I’ve made sure the cables are connected properly (otherwise they shouldn’t upload in the first place) but why can’t I get the frets downloaded? Pardon me if this has already been asked and answered. Last night I cloned my FT-60 with the repeaters in St. Louis from Repeaterbook.com with CHIRP. The frequencies that we're programmed manually work fine. When I try to key the mike on the new frequencies, all I get is "error". Any suggestions? Hi, I am having problems programming frequencies into my Baofeng UV-5R. It will take some of the higher ones, but won't upload the low ones. They appear on the CHIRP program, but when they upload, they change to random higher freq. Is it a setting I hope? Thanks, FD

Thanks guys I had been trying to use the stand alone and it would come up and count down and then blank screen but after reading these last group I downloaded the install one and downloaded the old Prolific driver and it works great. I just purchased a new UV-5R. I have downloaded the latest version of CHIRP. The first time I plugged in my cable from the UV-5R to the usb port on my PC, running Win 7,the computer downloaded a serial driver for the cable and indicated that the driver was installed and is now available. I turned on the radio while holding down the "3" key,I received a message that the firmware release is BFB297. I turned the radio off. I plugged in the cable. Then I selected "Radio" in CHIRP. Then I selected the Baofeng UV-5R and com 3. After a few moments I get an error message "Radio did not respond". I tried again, using com 5 with the same result. What do I do now? I'm trying to clone the radio so that I can find the firmware release number. Bob

To program my radios, I had to find the right COM PORT on my computer. WOW that is weird. CHIRP will unzip its files in one directory along with its sub directories. This is one program CHIPRW that is the executable program. I think it also created the start on the main screen. Jim: Thanks. You were right, I am using Windows XP and got CHIRP to open. I had checked cherpw, but did not recognize what popped up. I am now trying to get my computer to recognize my Baofeng, but I think that is a hardware problem. I am going to guess that your OS is some version of Microsoft Windows. If you downloaded the Windows Installer version (this is the version that I would recommend that most Windows users install and use), double clicking it would install CHIRP under the appropriate "Program Files" folder and create a CHIRP shortcut in the Start Menu. You would then just browse to this shortcut in the Start Menu, click it, and CHIRP would launch. If you downloaded the Windows Standalone version (my guess is this is what you have), you will unZIP the file in a suitable location that you yourself choose. The file that launches CHIRP is the same one referenced in the CHIRP shortcut mentioned above, "chirpw.exe". I have made 3 disks and they all work on the win 7 machine. The xp machine doesn't have a usb boot just reads them. Have tried to use plop but doesn't boot either. Did find that after leaving the xp on all night it had booted to the chirp program but hadn't done so after 3 hours so don't know how long it took or why so long. Thanks Hub W5GYX

I don't know if that was Paul answering me or not as I can't get a screen to download anything. When the live cd boots all I get is a blinking ( -) in the upper left corner and I have left it there for over an hour and nothing. Everything just stops. This is on an old laptop I would like to take with me if a radio needs to be programed. The live cd boots up just fine on my win 7 and programs and saves just fine but sure would like to use the laptop. Hub

I just started using CHIRP to program my Yaesu VX-7R. I used CHIRP recently with a Baofeng UV5R and noticed that there was tab to change the radio settings. I don't see this tab for the VX-7R. Am i missing something, or is this capability just not in CHIRP for the VX-7R? Richard AE6XO

Hi everyone, I'm new to the list. I downloaded CHIRP to use with my BaoFeng UV5 because programming it is a beast using the radio itself. I am totally blind and use a screen reader called JAWS that verbalizes what's on the screen. I use the keyboard, not the mouse, for all computer operations because the mouse is totally a visual interface. When I tried to use CHIRP, I discovered that there seems to be no way to access any of the menus or menu commands via keyboard. Does anyone have any suggestions, tips, etc for how to do this? It may not be possible, but before I abandon it totally, I thought I'd send a query to see what's out there. Thanks. Catherine KE4LAM

I saw in in the question list this same thing and said it was in the letters but I just started and don't know where to go to find this information. Guys, I can program frequencies fine, but it's not accepting my call under Dstar settings. I enter it, save the file, close and reopen and it's gone. I also imported a config from a friends' 880, changed his call to mine, saved, and uploaded. Still has his call in it. So I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong, or if this is a known issue? I am a new Technician class HAM licensee (KM4BED) and just bought a Baofeng UV-5R from Amazon as my first radio. A friend told me about CHIRP to program the local repeaters into the radio. I bought a programming cable from Amazon at the same time. I downloaded the Mac version of CHIRP from the CHIRP website and installed it with the driver it recommended for the Mac. I cannot seem to get the computer and the radio to talk. Can anyone help? I had the same friend help me checkout the cable and the radio using his computer (he has 5 of these radios) to see if the problem was the cable or the radio. He could program my radio using my cable with his Windows based computer and CHIRP. Based on this I am assuming my radio and cable are fine and there is something wrong with my computer configuration. My computer is a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.7.5 (this is the latest version this hardware will support). The version of CHIRP I am running is CHIRP 0.4.0 (GTK 2.24.10, PyGTK 2.22.0, Python 2.7.2). This is what I am doing: I start CHIRP; I plug the cable into a USB port on the computer; Then I plug the cable into the radio; Then I turn on the radio. This is what happens: The LED Indicator comes on RED and stays on for several minutes; Then it starts blinking Off and Red for a few minutes; Then it goes off. At that point I figure it is ready to start talking to the computer. On the computer I select Radio > Download From Radio; I select Port = /dev/cu.Bluetooth-Modem; Vendor = Baofeng; Model = UV-5R; I press the OK button; Instantly I get "An error has occurred could not open port /dev/cu.Bluetooth-Modem: [Errno 16] Resource busy: '/dev/cu.Bluetooth-Modem'"; I press the OK button. My new Rev C BeagleBone Black arrived today and I decided to see if it would run Chirp successfully. Short answer: yes it does :) The Rev C version comes with 4 GB of onboard flash and comes preinstalled with Debian 7.4 with an LXDE desktop. The older versions came with Angstrom Linux and only had 2 GB onboard storage. You could use one of those by loading Debian or Ubuntu on a 4GB or larger micro SD card and booting from there. The default user is debian and will sudo with no password, so it's not the most secure setup, but that is easily changed if you like. Here is how I did it: Open up LXterm from the Accessories menu and type: sudo usermod -a -G dialout debian This adds the debian user to the dialout group so you have access to the USB ports. Then I cheated a bit: While in LXterm I did this: sudo apt-get install chirp. This installs a truly ancient version of Chirp, but takes care of all the dependencies for you. When it completes, type: apt-get remove chirp. That removes the old version of chirp but leaves the dependencies. Then download the latest version of Chirp (the tar.gz Linux source version) From LXterm, type: cd /home/debian/Downloads and hit enter. Then type: tar -zxvf chirp* (no sudo needed here) This will extract the tar.gz file into a directory under Downloads, chirp-0.4.0 in my case. Then from the file manager in the GUI, navigate to that directory and double click on chirpw and click on execute in the dialog that pops up. I'm not sure if there is a practical use for running it in the BeagleBone, but it works every bit as well as my "real" Linux box does and reads/writes just fine to all my radios, it's fun, and Linux has no issues with the counterfeit Prolific USB programming cables. I am new to amateur radio and have a new Beofeng UV-82. I have gone through all the usual cable problems and managed to make communication with the radio. My problem is that when I make changes to Chirp it will not save them either to the radio or to file. I reverts to some default setting changing all new entries except the freq. I am editing the entries by selecting the line then right clicking to enter the edit mode This is very aggravating! Help!

Can anyone offer any advice? I'm trying to use CHIRP to program a TYT UV-F! with a MacBook Air running Mavericks. I did use a Windows machine (once) to program the UV-F! so I know the Prolific cable works with the radio and one model of PC. CHIRP 0.4.0 only shows four cu.drivers in the "Download from Radio" menu and none of them are reasonable; two are bluetooth and two wireless. The CHIRP menu does offer TYT and UV-F1 as choices so that looks good. Mavericks directory /dev listing shows the four cu.driver files and lots of other file names but nothing like "ftdi" or "serial" even after disabling the Apple ftdi.kext and installing the recommended FTDI serial driver with no errors. The Apple system info shows the cable present: USB-Serial Controller: Product ID: 0x2303 Vendor ID: 0x067b (Prolific Technology, Inc.) Version: 3.00 Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec Manufacturer: Prolific Technology Inc. Location ID: 0x04100000 / 3 Current Available (mA): 500 This could be as simple as me not knowing to hold down some button on the radio when starting the CHIRP program or missing some file in some directory. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'd like to use CHIRP to manage several radios but I can't even make one work at this point. Ashley Grayson

I asked a while back, but got no response. Since there has been a bit of a conversation about transmitting, I thought I would ask again…. Using CHIRP (latest stable or daily) I find that I can specify odd splits (not just +/- .6), but the software doesn’t seem to save them correctly. Anyone notice this besides me? If I set it up in CHIRP, it will hold long enough to program the radio, but it reverts to some odd mixture of either + or - in that column if I try to save and reload the spreadsheet. I have to reset the correct transmit freq every time I use it. I’m famous for oddball issues, so if this affects no one else, I’ll just live with it, but I would call it a bug worth noting to the software developer(s). BTW, I’m using the Mac version, but I don’t think it matters. Seems like I had the same issue when I tried a Win version. TIA, Forrest

Totally green, new user here trying to set up a Baofeng UV-82 to receive only on one UHF channel. I've had no problem using CHIRP to set up the radio and use it normally but cannot figure out how to disable the transmit function. I have unchecked the VHF and UHF Tx Enabled check boxes but that didn't stop transmission. Any hints would be much appreciated. Rohm Thompson

I have a way old build (Feb 2012) that I use mostly for my Baofeng UV5R and a little bit for a Wouxon...it seems to work fine for what I need to do with it, but has anything significant been added for the UV5R or in general that is a reason to update? What I am afraid of is that I have it working fine now, and somehow every time I try to update just about anything, something gets messed up and it no longer works at all! In uploading and downloading radio images I got a few of the following error messages: An error has occurred Radio did not ack programming mode I supposedly solved those problems and now it seems the the problem may be permanent. Or is it? I found the comments about such error messages, including that the error is a "very common problem". Well, I then took heed and special care to apply pressure to the plug when I undertook these operations. I then achieved both an upload to the computer and a subsequent download to the radio with a new programming of memory channels. But a few times I also occasionally forgot to turn off the radio before unplugging (and possibly plugging in) the plug for the radio. So I suspect that some very delicate parts may have been damaged. I hope not. But if so, I hope it's damage to some electronics in the cable assembly and not in the radio itself. (The cable is cheaper to replace and may even be easier to repair.) But I am also dismayed that the system seems to be so temperamental. I would think that basic engineering design principles would be employed to guard against very common errors. Anyway, I was able both to upload the radio's image to the computer and to download a revised channel-memory to the radio, a Baofeng UV-B5. Then I noticed that I could not change the SHIFT direction in channel mode. (I got the impression from something I read in a miklor.com web page that I should be able to modify the SHIFT direction in channel mode.) I suspected that the failure of the radio to perform such a SHIFT update was a sign of corrupted memory in the radio. So I downloaded the factory-settings image "UV-B5(factory).img" to the radio as recommended to resolve memory corruption problems. I think I also either unplugged or plugged in the cable to the radio while the radio was still on. Anyway, ever since then I have not been able to either upload an image from the radio or download an image to the radio. But I did use the CHIRP display of channel assignments to manually program the radio's channels, and the radio does not seem to have any problems that I've noticed other than the inability to upload and download radio images. As for the supposed corruption of the radio's memory, I see in menu item 21 that the manual says the radio should be in "VFO mode" (i.e., "frequency" mode) in order to change the SHIFT direction. So it appears that the only way to manually change a channel's SHIFT direction is to reprogram the channel from scratch (essentially in frequency mode) and then load the combined collection of preset parameters into a channel. Anyway, please, please, somebody, tell me all is not lost and that there is an easy fix for this problem. Incidentally, I would like to know what is the exact nature of the more usual problem that causes the "Radio did not ack programming mode" error. Is it a failure of physical contact of conductors in the connection? Or is there some some sort of electronic memory effect, such as wayward capacitance associated with the connection. Or is there erratic resistance of some sort in that circuit. An answer to that question may perhaps help with resolving what seems to have become the more persistent version of that problem that I have now run into. I did inspect the connection area and noticed a very slight raised bit of radio-case material where the recommended cutaway of the plug would avoid a protruding "rub" with the radio body near the connector, but the effect seemed to be extremely minor. So I suspect there is some other problem related to the connector perhaps via "unusual" erratic effect on sensitive semiconductors connected to the sockets. As for my (I now think erroneous) impression that it is possible (by intent of design at least) to modify the SHIFT direction in channel mode, see this page <http://www.miklor.com/UVB5/UVB5-ProgMem.php> and note that "Enter 'SHIFT' " immediately follows "- Press [VM/SCAN] to enter channel mode."
