hi, my cable to programm baofeng uv-5R not work or is fault my rtx uv-5r ? in how mode i test is faut the rtx or the cable ???? i create the CHIRP cd-live on usb boot pen.... but if i download to rtx it say ERROR no 2.... what is ? in how mode i TEST the cable is not dead ??? best 73 Normal 0 14 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 i try to connect th cable via CHIRP CD LIVE (linux ?) and I think the cable is recognized… but I not very shure it is effectly recognized …there isn’t a TEST to know this ? I open CHIRP and select “downolad” is say this : AN ERROR HS OCCURRED and : Could open Port/dev/ttyUSB0 [ ERRORno2 ] No file or directory /dev/ttyusb0 …..is correct that use this TTYUSB0 ? the others ports is not called “usb” …. And what is this ERROR no 2 ? Is FAULT and dead my usb cable or my rtx UV-5R ? Upgrading from CHIRP TO CHIRP-Daily. dpkg: error processing archive /var/cache/apt/archives/chirp-daily_20141119~utopic~1_i386.deb (--unpack): trying to overwrite '/usr/share/applications/chirp.desktop', which is also in package chirp 0.4.0-1 dpkg-deb: error: subprocess paste was killed by signal (Broken pipe) Chirp (regular) was uninstalled first then chirp-daily from the PPA was attempted to be installed. I am helping someone with this, I am just sending this in. Does anyone see any problem with deleting /usr/share/applications/chirp.desktop to get rid of the error or is there a better way? David

[chirp_users] Cannot program Yaesu VX5R - need suggestions on how to debug.

I have a Yaesu VX5R, and I cannot read the radio using CHIRP daily-20141119 under Linux. Symptoms: Set up to read the radio. Start the read, press the VFO button, and the radio shows "CLONE TX" for about a second or two, then CLONE FAIL. I've tried this with 2 cables - one that is just a Yaesu to RS-232 cable (and then using a Prolific USB to RS232 adapter, and also using a native 16550 based RS-232 port), and one that is a Yaesu to USB using a Prolific cable. I have verified my user ID can read the serial device, and have verified that the cable acts as a loop back cable using Minicom. I'd like some suggestions on what to try next to debug what is going on. Are there any flags I can set to try to get more debug information? Does anybody have a Yaesu VX5 radio image I can try to load, to see if loading works?

I still cant program the radio, it is not uploading tot he newer radios from my older img. the older img is the only one that I have, I have tried to read intot he fix but I really think I am in need of some step by step help. I am not as experienced as many of the guys on the forums and such and need a bit more guidance as to if I can flash the new radio with older frimware and the location of it if it exist. [chirp_users] CHIRP 20141119 and the Kenwood TH-D7(G) flashing "PF3" ?

I tried using CHIRP 20141119 with a genuine FTDI cable to read from my TH-D7(G) and the only result I could see was a mysterious "PF3" message flashing on the bottom of the THD7's screen. Does anyone know if CHIRP is known to work with the TH-D7(G) ? Or what the PF3 message means? Thanks. --Red

Hello chirp users! My name is Jason Polansky 'Kc3DYC'. I just received my ham radio technician class license and learned about Chirp from my instructor. I am blind and use the JAWS screen reader on a windows 7 computer. After downloading Chirp and opening it, JAWS was not reading anything. Pressing the alt key didn't take me to the menus as it does with most programs. Can anybody help. Thank you Jason Polansky

And I suspect the problem with the OP is that the radio that he is copying from and the radio that he is copying to have two different versions of firmware. You can't do that. You have to download an image from the radio that you are going to program, populate the image, then write it back to the radio. If each radio has the same version of firmware, you can copy from one radio, then upload it to each radio in turn. CHIRP will tell you what firmware version you have after you download the image, but it won't check it when you upload it. (You can find the firmware version in the "Settings" tab.) [chirp_users] Wouxun KG-UV6X, is it possible to unlock menu function?

Hello everyone. I was hoping you could help me out. I just received my Wouxun KG-UV6X. As expected it showed up with the keyboard locked. I have a MAC running on OSX 10.9.2. There were several references on the internet suggesting that Chirp can unlock the keyboard. I am using a USB cable that I have successfully worked with about 15 Wouxun UV3D's as well as a kenwood TH-F6, so I'm pretty darn sure my cable works. I was able to download from radio on my new UV6X and upload to radio a few frequencies that I need for work tomorrow (Safety/Rescue technician for a large exploration project). I am unable to unlock the menu feature on the radio. I was expecting to be able to click on the settings button in Chirp and access that option, and others, from there (similar to the KG-UV3D's I've programmed. However, when I click on the Settings button I get nothing but a blank screen. I tried to download the free software from the Wouxun site, but of course my OS does not support it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. rob

John/Jim, Sorry for the delay in responding. Version 0.4.0 works with my 51A under Windows XP. Version 0.4.1 does not. I tried the latest daily build last week and it did not work either. I'll try the daily build that just came out and see if that works. [chirp_users] Ubuntu daily build PPA broken?

I recently upgraded to Xubuntu 14.10. I tried to add the daily build repository "ppa:dansmith/chirp-snapshots" and when I do a sudo apt-get update I get several errors: Err http://ppa.launchpad.net utopic/main amd64 Packages 404 Not Found Err http://ppa.launchpad.net utopic/main i386 Packages 404 Not Found W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/dansmith/chirp-snapshots/ubuntu/dists/utopic/main/… 404 Not Found W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/dansmith/chirp-snapshots/ubuntu/dists/utopic/main/… 404 Not Found E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. It looks like I'm getting 404 errors because the URL is wrong or something. Does anybody know how to fix this?

Chirp community, I just bought a new computer that is running Windows ver 8.1. I loaded the newest release of Chirp, ver 0.4.1. I can't seem to get this computer with this version of Chirp to communicate with my Icom ID-51A. I have no problem using my XP computer with an older version of Chirp with the same 51A Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Tim K4RA

[chirp_users] Radio did not ack programming mode with UV-B5

When I try to do "Download from radio" on my UV-B5 with chirp, I get a "Radio did not ack programming mode" error. I did some googling, but all the tips did not help. I discovered that using the programming software version 1.09 on Miklor did work, so it probably isn't a driver or cable issue. I have driver version 3.2.0.0. I get the error on both Linux and Windows 7. In Windows, I did some serial port captures to compare the traffic from the stock software and chirp. Below are those files generated by Serial Port Monitor by Eltima. The HTML files are exported versions so someone without the software could read the output. Hi. I'm using a Kenwood th-f7e with chirp 0.7.1, I'm trying to store a channel with split RX/TX but I always get "Radio refused ...". I stored it on the radio, but when I download it and try to edit I get the error. I am trying to program a Yaesu VX5 using Chirp under Ubuntu, and I am not having any luck. I've tried 2 cables - one a USB to Yaesu cable, one a RS-232 to Yaesu cable (the latter both on a USB to RS-232 adapter, and on an honest UART based serial port). In all cases, I cannot download the data from the radio. Steps taken: 1 Verify serial device is readable/writable by my user (minicom, verify I see data looped back). 2 Start CHIRP (daily-20141112) 3 Select correct serial device (/dev/ttyUSB0), Vendor (Yaesu), and radio (VX-5) 4 Turn radio off, connect cable 5 Turn radio on holding Function (Radio shows "CLONE") 6 Radio->Download from radio. 7 Press OK 8 Press VFO key on radio. The radio shows "Clone TX" for about a second and a half, then shows CLONE ERROR. After a few seconds CHIRP reports a download error. [chirp_users] IC-208H programming question -- having difficulty

I am having difficulty getting my laptop to communicate with the IC-208H. It is easy to start the radio such that it displays "CLONE". Pressing the "SET*LOCK" button gives "CL OUT" but quickly clicking on the "download" in Chirp only gives an error message that there is a failure to communicate. John (kc2txv) was kind enough to send me a file that he has used with his Icom IC-208H. I modified the frequencies as applicable for my area and attempted to simply download the image file to the radio without having first accomplished an upload. That gives the message: "An error has occurred Failed to communicate with the radio: Unexpected response from radio." I verified that I have the "Prolific" USB cable set to the correct com port. However, I do not know of a good way to test the cable.

Hello everyone....Thanks to all who provide us less capable with the answers to program our radios. I have successfully programmed my BaoFeng UV-5re and would like to do the same with the Yaesu. I've seen comments that this is possible. Would someone be able to give me step by step instructions so I don't have to reinvent the wheel? I have set up eight BAOFENG UV-82 C radios to use in my fire department. I have locked them down in CHIRP using the work mode settings. Here is what I have done: *Advanced Settings* -Dual Watch = Enabled -Dual Watch Priority = A -All menu's = Disabled -Single PTT= Enabled *Work Mode Settings* -Display =A -VFO/MR Mode = Channel -MR A Channel = 2 -MR B Channel =1 The result is that both the "A" channel and "B" channel show on screen as expected. The users can change channel "A" with the up/Down buttons. The users can not tab down and change the "B" channel. They can press the "Tab" button and the indicator arrow will go down to "B" and immediately return to the "A" channel. All this is perfect and what I wanted to happen. The problem/issue that I do not like is this: As radio traffic is being received on the "B" channel, the user can inadvertently press the up/down buttons and change the "B" channel. This is a huge issue because they can not change it back unless traffic is received on whatever channel they accidentally changed "B" to. The "B" channel should not be allowed to change under these circumstances. If this were corrected, it would be a perfect set-up for us. Any ideas or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

[chirp_users] baofeng 82 squelch on uhf

Using chirp, my squelch setting may still read setting 1 but the actual setting moves from .2 micro volts to 1 micro volt making the squelch useless. any one have any ideas why, what I thought was in firmware is changing? When I reset the radio by the menue it resets back to default up load again, the squelch changes. Seems to only affect the UHF side.

I totally agree… Raspberry pi the only way to fly.. works great. Programs all of my radios no problem.. No driver issues at all.. I just installed an IC-208H radio in my vehicle. I would like to use Chirp to program it by computer rather than by hand. It would be most helpful if someone has a prior download from an IC-208H that I could study. Even though I would be making changes to frequencies, etc., the prior download would show how Chirp displays the information from an IC-208H. I learned many years ago that many tasks become much easier the second or third time. It also is a big help to draw upon the experience of another person. I shall look forward to a reply. Thomas

When I check the daily build list it is not shown as supported and I could not locate a *.py file for the repeater. I have been through the archives and found reference that support for the ID-RP400V was added and it was working , but not much other info. When I run Chirp to try detect the repeater/radio I get an error message " An error has occurred Unable to get radio model". Hi, I wonder if anybody has tried this and can offer advice: I have chirp running on a laptop in my apt, but an FT8900 is in a boiler room one the roof. The remote control head for the radio is down in the apartment. I can connect to the FT8900 by running a ser2net service up there and socat down here. With this setup and permissions all set OK using /dev/pts/5, I can see the FT8900 send a character when I put it into clone mode. But chirp will not recognise anything and gives me "Failed to communicate with radio: Failed to read header (0)" I am using SuSE linux here and CentOS upstairs. I have tried setting the serial port up there to 1200, 4800, 9600 and 19200. I assume that chirp uses autobauding to communicate with the radio but that is obviously not available over a tcp connection. I'm trying to program a BF UV-82C for a friend. I note that compatibility for this radio is available in daily builds. I'm using Chirp daily - 20141025 which I think is the latest, but the UV-82C does not seem to appear in the list of compatible radios. Using UV-82 I can program the frequencies but not the special settings. I bet I'm missing something obvious but so far it's escaping me so I come to the brain trust for guidance. Greetings, I just wanted to report that I have had great success with the latest daily build and my Wouxun KG-UV8D. I was able import and export configuration to my radio with no issues. I downloaded, as a test, the repeaterbook data for my state, and was able to successfully edit the data and upload it to the radio with no errors. Able to edit power levels, tones, names, etc, with no errors popping up. Thanks for the great work. New list member. I have a new Baofeng UV82L that a friend loaded with his freqs using Chirp on his PC. I have installed Chirp software on my Win 7 PC along with the correct Prolific usb serial to com port driver 7/31/2007 v 3.2.0.0. My pc recognizes the driver as Com 3 and is operating normally. I want to upload my phone freqs into my blank Chirp software but I am getting an error msg after plugging in the usb cable "cannot open port 3 [Error 2]. The system cannot find the file specified" and Chirp will not connect to the phone. Any Suggestions?

The common wisdom with regards to USB-to-serial cables seems to be that one should pick FTDI over Prolific because of all the Prolific counterfeits in circulation. It seems that this is now becoming a problem with FTDI, as well. Up to now it was not a problem for the end-user. FTDI has decided to change that with their latest driver, which changes the configuration of a "fake" FTDI chip so that it is rendered useless (at least without a bit of fiddling with configuration tools and device IDs on Linux or XP). I hadn't realized that FTDI had such an issue with fake chips until I read this article. Some of the comments point out that the end-user of the device has no way of knowing whether the chip is genuine or not. Further, as noted above, many in the radio programming community purchased devices touted as having FTDI chips in good faith as an effort to avoid the counterfeits Prolific chips. Anyway, if you suddenly have issues with your FTDI USB-to-serial adapter, take a look and see if the PID has been changed to 0. If so, then you may have been affected by this new driver. After I import the data from an Icom IC-92AD and I want to save all the config data I'm having an error. I'm using both prolific and FTDI serial adapters. If I try to use auto detect on Icom it crashes the program. I've not tried with other radio brands as I only have the Icom. Looks like prolific isn't the only company with counterfeiting issues, but according to this article, ftdi isn't just making their driver incompatible, they are literally bricking the fake chips: http://hackaday.com/2014/10/22/watch-that-windows-update-ftdi-drivers-are-k… A fix for the damaged hardware is available for now, but who knows how long they will keep it. If you use windows, be warned, your usb->serial converters may be damaged after your next windows update. -Zero_Chaos
