Folks: I'm a bit puzzled. I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I followed instructions for adding the repositories and pulling and installing CHIRP (which is a very nice bit of work). But I am unable to install the daily builds. Here are the errors I receive: sudo apt-get install chirp-daily Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... I spent most of the last two days finding out what is and is not supported for the Baofeng (Pofung) UV-3R, which I know is an older model. I was working from *.csv files. Once you have uploaded from the radio (or loaded a saved image from the model you are using) you can disable transmit by: 1 - click "Settings" on the extreme left (There is a column that says "Memories" and "Settings" - click on Settings) 2 - click on "Other Settings" in the second menu column 3 - Change the VHF and UHF frequency limits as desired (e.g. 144-148 and 420-450) You can disable transmit all together by unchecking the boxes next to VHF and UHF "TX Enable" KW9WR Bill

Hello: I recently repaired my KG-UV3D by replacing the memory chip using the procedure described at http://tim-yvonne.com/ham/wouxun-memory/index.htm I am having the problem that the radio apparently has reset itself to the other band as when I attempt to use the Wouxon software I am now getting a Channel Message 1 Out of Range message. Is there a rescue image that I can use to reset this radio back to factory defaults? The web page listed above list 2 image files but they are for a KG-UVD1P. Hi all I have a Pofung BF-F9+TP which I am having problems with. I can't access the local repeater even though the rig seems to be set up correctly. It's transmitting on the correct input frequency, but it won't open the repeater, even though it's on the same settings as my UV-5R which works just fine. I suspect I may have got something wrong during programming and, like an idiot, I forgot to get a nice clean copy of the software when it first arrived. Does anyone have a known-good image for firmware N5R3401 - BFP3-25, preferably one that is known to work with a repeater? Douglas Yates

What would be causing the chirp windows download version to not allow writing from chirp to Baofeng...only will write from Baofeng to chirp. It's like that option is dead...meaning shows up in ghost type on computer screen where everything else is in bold type. Thanks, John

I'm a newby to the group ... not having any problems using the software with my Baofeng UV-B5, but I can not download my Yaesu VX-6R to the software. Once I press the band button to begin the download , a few seconds go by LCD reads out ERROR. I don't see any obvious VX-6R problems listed ... but can anybody confirm that the current build is working fine with the VX-6R? Or do I have a cable problem? Using Windows 7 and the driver is working fine for the other radio. So I either have a Vx-6R cable problem ... likely is a counterfeit Prolific chip in it ... OR WHAT ELSE? Any thoughts? Hi, I have a brand new UV-82HP. I connected it with the cable, and the cable loaded the USB Serial driver automatically. When I plug the radio in, the computer sees it on COM4. This is on Windows 8.1. I'm running the latest version of CHIRP, 20150814. The radio's firmware is US2S35. Anyway, when I try to download from the radio, I get this message: "Radio refused to send block 0x1ec0". The display on the radio seems to reset when I do this. I'm not sure what to try next.The cable is plugged in securely. Any ideas what to do? Thanks!

I have 3 models of Baofeng Radios. I was abel to use Chirp on all three ( UV82L, BF-F8+ & BF-F8HP) in past. I updated the latest tonight and do not see the BF-F8 or F8+ as a choice. I tried the selecting each one on the list (I the hope it might see it as BF-F8HP) and as I am sure you know, it did not work.

Hi All I have had Chirp for quite a few years but don't let that fool you, I know nothing about it. I purchased two Baofeng UV-5R+Plus radios a while ago and a friend used Chirp to clone his radio and then to set my two up. I have used it a few times as I have recommended the Baofeng radios to others and then I have used Chirp to clone mine and set theirs up. I am not sure what has happened but I have updated to a Toshiba laptop, I've just updated that to Windows 10, and I downloaded the latest Chirp today. It's been a while since I last used Chirp and a friend has just purchased two Baofeng UV-5RTP radios and asked me to set them up. When I opened Chirp I opened my radio image file and connected the new radio. I get a COM 5 port error and that's it. I tried hooking my radio up but get the same error. Not sure whether it's relevant but I used the same original data cable as I did for my, and others, radios. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Mick.

I just got a Baofeng UV-5R5 radio and Baofeng UV-5R Programming Cable. I installed CHIRP 20150814 and Prolific v3.2.0.0 drivers. When I try to "Download From Radio", I get "An error has occurred - Radio did not respond". I hope CHIRP supports the UV-5R5 because the Baofeng software appears to be in Chinese. Every character displays as a "?" so I don't know if there's a way to switch it to English. Rachel Carr KG5HUX

Subject: ICOM IC-T8A programming bug #1899 To: chirp_users(a)intrepid.danplanet.com After some research on the Chirp website, it appears that I am having the same issues with programming my two ICOM radios as was described a year ago in Bug #1899. It doesn't appear that this bug has been addressed yet. Specifically, if a frequency such as 146.7250 Mhz is entered into the Chirp frequency list and uploaded to the radio, it appears as 146.7225. In other words, the Chirp frequency list doesn't match the actual programmed frequency. It is offset 2.5 Khz. Another frequency, such as 447.440, will program correctly, so the problem seems to be related to having a number in the 3rd digit to the right of the decimal point. It doesn't matter whether VHF or UHF. Both radios have the MARS/CAP mod, and both behave the same. If I then download the incorrect radio frequencies from the radio back to the Chirp frequency list, all of the incorrect frequencies come back corrected to their proper values, just as if the upload worked perfectly. If a GMRS frequency with 4 digits to the right of the decimal point is entered, it will also upload correctly. The same software is used to program a Baofeng UV-5RA with the same frequency list and it works perfectly. I have tried both the older 0.4.0 and the newer 0.4.1 software versions. Any chance this bug can be fixed or that someone has found a workaround? Thanks for your help! Walt

I had one follow up question/clarification to this. I thought my UV5-R+ 'design flaw' of automatically changing the transmit channel was the most irritating issue with the radio, anyway glad to hear Baofeng resolved it in later firmware and my new BF-F8HP works as I thought my UV5R originally should. My question is can the firmware be updated on the UV5-R to a more current revision to resolve this issue? I recently purchased a new Baofeng BF-F8HP radio, and an FTDI cable from AnyTone. No matter what software or drivers I use, and no matter which Com Ports I use, I get the same warning [ "An error has occurred, could not open port Com XXX: [Error 5] Access is denied."] and am unable to connect to the radio. I have tried this on both my Win 7 Pro and my Win 10 machines with exactly the same results. I also have noticed that no matter what Com Port I choose, I get a message that some other application is already using it [I have tried ports all the way from 14 into the low 100's], which of course, I can hardly believe. Any help would be much appreciated. Mark

My wife and I are both long time Hams and First Responders. We have permission to use radios on both county and city police and fire departments in a limited way. However we must provide our own radios. It reads like the UV 5R could possibly do this on VHF analog repeaters. I think their is more programming steps that must be done in order to make it possible. An example freq as xmitted by my county repeater is 155.655. There are several others. Hello, Everyone. I am a brand new chirp user. As it is described in the Subject line, I am trying to connect to a Wouxun KG-UVD1P using chirp. When I attempt to download from the radio, I only have access to two Bluetooth ports. I am unable to access either of the two USB ports on this MacBook Pro. I am using what appears to be the official Wouxun USB cable I ordered for Amazon. I checked the relevant chirp pages and all I see are solutions for MacOS versions 10.9 and earlier. I recently purchased a TYT TH-9000D. My understanding is that this is the Dual Band version (VHF/UHF) I've tried using the recent daily build to communicate with the radio, but every time I do I receive an "unsupported device" error. There are 3 types of TH-9000 listed and I believe these are for the single band models. Is there specific support for the D model? It's mentioned on the website but I think it may just be the regular TH-9000. Thanks for any help anyone can provide. -SP

I need some ideas here. I have a Baofeng UV82L that I program with Chirp and have no problem cloning this for the various UV5? radios that people have around here. I'm comfortable with Chirp. Recently purchased a TYT 9800; I have no problem programming that from the front panel, but I'm a computer junky and it's normally easier to enter / fix radio data programmatically. Running Windows 10, updated; have a cable that claims to be a TYT (the label on the cable); when plugged in device manager reports "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" The Prolific 3.2.0.0 driver announces itself as being available on com 4 when the Baofeng cable is plugged in; however I see no com ports available for the TYT - I have not been able to get either the driver that came with the disk or the one available fro Grapevine (retailer in Dallas) to install. Any comments / suggestions would be appreciated. I'm at a loss. //al

Dear fellow Chirp'ers: I am trying to program in a few channels while leaving some channels blank. I was able to do this with a version of Chirp from 2014 but I recently tried to upload my old .img to a new UV-82 and was met with a firmware incompatibility message. In my new .img I set the channels I want to use (0, 3, and 4) and want the rest of the channels to be completely unavailable (if you are on channel 0 and press the up arrow then you immediately go to 2 having skipped 1). I thought the way to do this was to was to set the frequency to 0.000000 but I get an error message about being out of reference. I also tried to use a CSV file to import and saw just the few channels I need but this didn't result in the radio only having those three channels. I am including a screenshot of my old .img in hopes this can be guiding. I thank you for your time and assistance. Sincerely, B Stone

I have the BaoFeng UV-5R and the BaoFeng BF-F8+ and this problem happens with both radios when I try to program them from CHIRP on my iMac. I just downloaded the new version of CHIRP and it seems to do the frequency programming fine. But I have noticed lately with both the 0.4.0 and 0.4.1 versions, that the Power-On Message that I have programmed, does not come across to the radio. I have menu item 38 on the radio set to msg and the “Message” dialog is set in CHIRP but it does not come across. There may be other things that do not program as well but the radio performs in the few modes that I use so I dont’ know about any other settings. Also, with both versions, after the programming I get an error message “CHIRP quit unexpectedly” and a long list of comments. I have included a screen shot of the first page. Incidentally, clicking “Reopen” does not reopen CHIRP After this happened several times, I re-installed the Python runtime and had the same results. Do I need to un-install the old Python runtime before installing the latest one? Have you got any other ideas? I’ll look forward to your response. Craig Ryan

Dear Members, My friends radio seems to have the dreaded audio blocking problem after another friend tried to program it. I think it has A corrupted Settings . I downloaded the latest daily build and have this information: 1st firmware message: N5R2407 2nd firmware message: BFB297 6+[power-on message: 150425N Using this information I went to KC9HI's listing or factory or rest image files and found: N5R2407(141006N) But no N5R2407(150425N) Does anybody here have the correct image file for this radio or know where I can find it? Am I out in Left field somewhere? Any help or suggestions on how to get this radio back into this world would be appreciated. It is a brand new radio so maybe the factory image lists just have not caught up with the newer Versions. Since I was not the first person to try to upload the channels listing to this radio I Have no idea what was done before me. My IC-V82 doesn't work with Chirp. I am using Chirp for Mac. Works 100% with my Baofeng UV5-R. Chirp uploads from the radio and downloads to the radio until right at the end it says that there was an error and wipes the radio. I have to use a Windows machine to program it. Any ideas/solutions? I am not sure which image to select in kc9hi list. The closet I see is N5R3403 but mine was N5R340A. Yes. You can use the "win32.zip" version. Just extract it anywhere convenient. That way it won't mess with your current CHIRP. Just find and double click on the "chirpw.exe" file. The old version is needed because it doesn't have the check that keeps you from uploading the wrong image into your radio. Ok, rats, and I thot I was doing so good... have no idea where the other firmware came from because I don't own any other radios and have never been in chirp before today, but nevertheless... May I ask how you could tell about the BFB firmware? I would like to confirm I understand what needs done here before I do it. So now I need to actually upload an old build (7-14-2014) into chirp. I have three radios. I used chirp to download an image of the first radio, made a few changes just to practice the process (added some NOAA frequencies), saved that file and uploaded it to radio 1. Changes uploaded fine. I thot' I could use that same fine to upload to the other radios so they would all be set up the same? I downloaded the image of the second radio and saved it, then tried to upload the changed file from the first radio to the second but got this error: An error has occurred. Image not supported by radio: 'XXXXXXX' where each X is actually a rectangular box with an upper case X inside. I saw where someone else had this error and it was noted that the firmware was not the same for the two radios so I checked it and the firmware displayed in the Firmware Message 1 for both downloads is identical: N5R340A So I'm not sure where to go from here. I guess I can recreate all the changes in the download from the second radio (?) but kind of wanted to know what I am doing wrong so the upload of the image from the first radio is not being supported by the second? I probably should not even be typing this request but I have bought a baofeng f8hp radio and well, I may as well try to use it, so. I was trying to get the chirp software loaded so I can get it setup. I used the daily build install from the CHIRP website. It seemed to run ok but did not give me a desktop icon. I was following the very clear and easy miklor instructions but I have a version of windows that does not provide a start button, neither does it give me an "all programs" selection (don't ask me what version of windows I have because I don't know how to find that either). So I used the "file explorer" option and found the CHIRP folder but I do not see anything to click on to open the software. The folders I see include: etc, lib, locale, share, stock_configs. I have looked around in each of these but do not see any sort of .exe file to open the software. Can someone help me understand what I am missing in this process. UV5RE+ firmware N5R-213 chirp-daily 20150814 Problem: radio is set to dual watch with no priority. radio set to slot A and receives RX on slot B radio then flips back to slot A to TX. Same happens if B slot is selected and picks up RX on slot A, it reverts to slot B to TX. New Baofeng uv-5r out of box, purchased Saturday 9/6 at hamfest from vendor. Installed chirp 4.1 and downloaded driver prolific, 7/31/2007, version 3.2.0.0. Device manager tells me it is working correctly. I can download from the radio and add the NOAA bands into the software. When I attempt to upload I receive an ERROR of unsupported firmware N5R3409BFP3-25. I previously installed chirp daily build for 8/15/2015 and got an error of wrong model selection of radio, there was only one uv-5r to choose from. Good Day, I have two models of Wouxon; the 2d and 6d. I am able to upload from both radios without any problems. I can download to the 2d with no problems either. The problem I am having is when I try to upload to the 6d, the pull down menus for radio selection is greyed out and is on the 1d. (not a problem with downloading to the 2d). [chirp_users] Using Chirp With a TH D7A/G

I have a legit Baofeng usb cable with the 2 leds, I also have downloaded the latest version of Chirp, I have been able to program all of the Baofeng radios including the GT 3 model with the higher power after I found that you need to remove part of the side of the 2 prong end of the cable so it sits in correctly. Programming was successful after that with that model. The problem I am having is programming a Kenwood TH D7A/G radio. Leaving the usb cable in the same usb slot on my laptop using windows 8.1, and not removing it at any time, when I try to download the radio image it comes up with an error message can not open comm port 5, access is denied. This is the same port I use for programming the Baofeng radios. Also with the usb cable inserted in the Kenwood, it flashes PF 3 which indicates to program function 3 button. This radio shows up in the drop down programming box just before you attempt to download or upload. Any suggestions? I tried restarting the computer and other things with no results. Again I am using windows 8.1. Glenn

I haven’t used my Chirp app in over a year and I am trying to add a repeater to my BaoFeng BF-F8 channels. I was able to open the .img file and make the addition, but I am unable to either download or upload from or to the radio. My Chirp app says it’s 0.4.0 Do I need to upgrade Chirp? If so where and how? Or do I need to look for something else? Thanks, Whit

Is the plug your using that goes into the radio a screw in type? The VX6 uses a screw in type plug for the microphone / headset. The part of the body of the plug that is closest to the pin has threads on it. It's designed that way to help with the waterproof nature of the VX6. When I tried to plug in my generic plug (without the threads on the body) it would not go in far enough to make contact and would not communicate with the radio. I trimmed the plastic on the body of the plug next to the pin of the plug with wire cutters to make it smaller. It still was not small enough to just push the plug in, but I could then screw it in far enough until it made contact. Then the computer would communicate with the radio and I could use Chirp after that. I have been using Chirp for years with amateru radio HTs I have a new Icom IC-A24 which is an air band AM HT to carry as a backup in the cockpit should the radio or power fail and before startup. Is there any risk using the 3.5mm TRS tip used for Icom amateur HTs? Has anyone known of Chirp being used with Icom air band radios? I am thinking that sending the dump command should not brick a radio but it was purchased used and therefore has no warranty.
