Hello, First time using CHIRP with a brand new Pofung UV82. Every time I try to Download From Radio regardless of which port from drop down menu i choose), I get this type of message : could not open port /dev/ttyUSB0: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/dev/ttyUSB0' I am pretty certain I am plugged into the port labeled USB0. I have no idea how to change permission access to the port. Any thoughts? Thanks, Charly

ok, Im not really good with computers. I have a yaseu ft 7800 and a hp laptop with no serial ports. I have a ps2 male to ps2 male cable and a ps2 to usb adapter. I had to run a virtual com port program and then chirp. I followed the on screen directions for my radio. I on the radio it says tx for 2 or 3 seconds and then error. the pc says cloneing, then error occured, unabe to communicate with radio. failed to read header (0) Im thinking its my com port. before i used the virtual port i look under device manager and there is no section + ports. oh yea Im using windows xp sp3 media version. Many are just outright returning the radio as a result, assuming it's broken. Since there are a million UV-5R variants and this is likely to get worse, this patch adds a blacklist of similar magic strings from radios that may be confused easily. If we fail to probe the radio that was selected, we can probe for the blacklist magics, and if any reply, raise a specific error to the user indicating that they chose the wrong model. #4539

I would like to use my Boafeng UV-5RA at work. We use the frequency. I can receive transmissions but I cannot transmit. I imported the GMRS frequencies from the Import from stock config menu item in CHIRP, and did not make Any changes to them. Any ideas on what setting I need to change? Baofengs are not Part 95, most are not even Part 90 legal. The Boafengs MUST be used with a license of some sort, Part 97 Amateur or Part 90 Public Safety or business use. Hi all, I've been using Chirp with my Baofeng UV-5R+, and it works great. I recently purchased a pair of BF-F9V2+ radios. I've attempted to perform Radio -> Download from radio, and select a Baofeng BF-F8HP. This seems to work. However, according to this issue, this specific type of radio should be supported. http://chirp.danplanet.com/issues/2511 I have the latest nightly, specifically revision 20170210, but this radio is not in my list. I'm using an OS X distribution. Is this the radio option I should be using, or is this radio type missing? Thanks, Todd

Just a follow-up… I took the suggestions offered, tried them without success, then ordered the ~$20 “official” cable for the Yaesu line. Yesterday I hooked everything up and was able to successfully download my FT60R to Chirp, add frequencies and parameters, and then save and upload the file back to my HT. Worked great, the FT60R works like a charm. Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond and assist me! Rick R

The point is that there is a feature described both in the Chinglish manual and supported through CHIRP that just isn't working for the 12 handsets I have on the floor in front of me. For me a work around is adequate - others might have a different operating scenario where it is not possible. The engineer in me always wants to see things work as they should ! Regs Brian

I am using daily build 2017126 to programme a standard baofeng BF888S. I can change the individual channel power settings through the Power column in the tabular Memories screen which is great. I have verified this actually works with a power meter. However I can't re-designate the Side Key Function as Transmit Power via the Settings screen. It does re-designate that key to the other functions when selected. Is that a software bug or operator error on my part ?

It was. Also after setting the side key function to Transmit Power, it is evident that the factory default Monitor setting is no longer available. Pressing the the side key now either causes the radio to emit 1 beep or 2 beeps. I assume the beeps tell the user what the power level was just switched to. I've checked this on 2 BF-888S radios. Perhaps I should just be grateful that I can actually change the power settings in the tabular memories screen. The current discussion brings up questions for me. I like to insert one or more FM broadcast stations in the 88-108mhz US FM band. The times I have inserted one of the station in a Chirp image it gets removed when uploaded to the radio. Am I making the entry wrong or will it not store it in one of the 128 memories? Thank you. I hope this is an acceptable question for this list. I don't know any other place to ask for this help. A local county emergency manager has told me about an inexpensive magic ( to me ) dongle type rf reciever that plugs into a usb port. It has a jack for an external antenna. Supposedly this device can recieve a huge amount of frequency spectrum AND trunked systems that also uses p25 digital signals. If anyone has links to this device that would give me the complete info on this thing, I would greatly appreciate you. Yes there is one on the market that was originally intended for use as a European TV receiver but with free software it becomes a very wide band VHF/UHF receiver . There is also a add on board that you can purchase that adds HF capability.. interestingly enough it will work as a spectrum analyzer on a smart phone.. Nice little device. You are incorrect. Ham bands are wide band, 25 hz width compared to 12.5 wide narrow band for public safety/business use. We are not talking audio width, but frequency band width. I appreciate the advice from evetyone. I have tried making the programming changes to my UV-5RA. Unfortunately for me, I still have not been able to pick up anything. First, I setup channel 1 with the following settings for my local First Responders. Freq = 453.575000Tone Mode = TotalTone = 233.6Mode = NFM Second, I tried to setup channel 2 to our local repeater freq., which is 224.8000 with a "-" setting. Many ideas here that could solve your problem. Also, check to see if you enabled a tone squelch option that would not pass the audio unless the proper tone/code is set. Just to let everyone know, if you do find an older Yaesu without the FTS-17A CTCSS Tone Board (long unavailable) they are being remanufactured in China, for around $25.00 USD shipped. The same one used in Mobiles and HTs, it was an (expensive) option as few Repeaters used it at the time 20 years ago, most having just switched over from AM to FM Mode and most Ham radios were converted single-channel Crystal radios. Rather expensive to change Channels at around $30.00/pair. No 1.000-channel radios existed then... Regarding the Yaesu FT-1802M, the "M" merely stands for Mobile radio. There may be a difference in the Euro version to the North American one, although usually there is a "E" after the Model name (for European Version). The "A" versions are for the Americas as we have a wider VHF section, same as UHF. I own a FT-3000M which is slightly different in specifications, both being High-Power VHF radios, yours is 50W, mine 65W output. The Euro versions will only TX 144-146 MHz, ours to 148 MHz, and the wide-band modification is quite simple. If you live out in the Countryside, the higher TX output you will really appreciate, just make sure your antenna will handle it and use a 5/8, and please due to the power wire it directly to your Battery or PS. When I try to read the radio it does not identify the model number correctly. It sees that the radio is a Yaesu but the wrong one. I can't tell you if the FT-1802 is any different because I've never touched one. They could be exactly the same. What I would do to test it is manually enter a few memory channels in the FT-1802. Then download into Chirp and make sure those channels are where they're supposed to be (channel 1 is channel 1, etc.) and that all the frequencies and tones are correct. If it all looks good then there's probably no change to the memory layout between FT-1802 and FT-1802M. I have tried changing the column headers to match those in the stock files. When I do it seems to recognize the file but it then says no channels found. If I change the location column back to channel it does not recognize the file. Why can't find any channels? Does the order of the column matter? 'Back in the day' I thought one of the issues with using Excel to process csv file and Chirp was that Excel tended to truncate trailing commas for empty fields whereas Chirp was a stickler for those being in place to make the columns line up correctly. [chirp_users] Rugged vs Baoffeng

I have a Rugged RH-5R that looks to be the same radio as a Baoffeng UV-5X3. What I would like to know are they the same? and and if so can I use chirp on my Rugged? as it is not listed on the support list. Thanks

[chirp_users] help importing file

I have saved a frequency list in excel as a csv file. When I try to import it into Chirp it says it does not recognize the file type. I just downloaded Chirp so I have the most current version for windows. Any help would be appreciated. Jeff

Bill I believe what you say is true, but you don't have to change the file you downloaded from the radio. You can upload a different file, one of the stock files in chirp or one you have created. For around 30 bucks they work well. On eBay you can buy a battery eliminator and larger batteries. The larger batteries have a charging port on them but I’m not sure if you can run the radio and charge at the same time. You can get a battery case that holds 6 AA's if you want. I would pick up a programing cable for 10 bucks and use the free "chrip" programing software. I have Baofeng BF-888S plus just bought H.R.G. PC03 FTDI USB Programming Cable for Jingtong, BaoFeng<https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NAQBXK4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?…>. I downloaded the chirp software and wouldlike to know how to program the devices so I don't mess with emergency systems, etc. Sadly, I need extremely straightforward step by step instructions. I have read numerous articles that say Apple did a total rewrite of the USB driver for El Capitan. :-/ For me, updating to El Capitan, definitely broke some USB devices, but not USB to chirp. You said "When I connect the programming cable to my powered USB hub...". Were you using the hub when trying to program? I would recommend connecting directly to the computer...
