Thanks for the update of flashing protocols for the UV5R. Sadly I did not pick up on any WARNINGS pertaining to this requirement in the various dialogues when running the cloning sequences. And, to boot, I didn't save an original copy of the image either (dumb, it was recommended). Now I've have 4 UV5R's all literally cloned to be the same, and possibly not operating optimally as I have observed failure to break squealch and low power output on the latest 2 I've done. From what I'm guessing, only 1 of them has a proper flash image, and that is probably the first one I did. No idea if this situation is recoverable, but it doesn't sound good. The concept of what "cloning" means needs better clarification. In some, programming software clones the configuration. In these Baofeng's with CHIRP, it sounds like it is a memory download from the HT, patch to retrieve/stuff values, then upload to the HT. If you change the baseline image, lots of stuff gets messed up, and no "reset all" will fix it. Wonder how many others have been bitten by this, wanting to have their pair of HT's configured the same. Any recovery suggestions most welcomed. I have several UV5R's and am starting to wonder how the flashing algorithm works. This is due to odd behaviors that I "think" I am seeing. When flashing, is the total memory replaced included in-factory configuration elements? The reason I ask is that I bought a new unit which was serving for data aok, then after flashing an image (including channels) from another device, it seemed to degrade performance. The purpose of my question is to clarify whether I need to flash units only with their native image updated with data since factory parameters may be impacted by using another image as a baseline. Harrison, The QYT puts all the channels in the same "bucket." You cannot really divide them into groups for each letter. I generally set A, B, C to frequencies I am the most active on, then use D to scan. If traffic from A,B C comes on during scan, I just move with the "buttons" to either A, B or C. First off...CHIRP talks to the radio just fine, I uploaded the initial settings, imported a file from another setup and it programmed it. Sorta. The manual isn't very clear about how the banks work. A/B/C/D. You can rotate thru them with the mic, but how do you program them into the specific banks? From what I can see, there is only a single bank and when I read the initial programming, it showed up as location 0/1/2/3. When I put a program in, it just rotates thru on bank A channels 0 thru <n>, and didn’t touch the B/C/D locations. Anyone else using this radio?

Folks, I have been doing battle with the icom software for programming that radio, not fun. Is anyone looking at getting it working with Chirp? I would be willing to lend mine if someone would take it on and get it going. Beyond that, it works for all else (well would be nice to be able to use it to program my MD-380, but that is not a horse it is a zebra, so will not worry about that one) that I have here. I contacted Apple support on this issue and shared the error log from Chirp via Terminal. Nice support people but the prognosis is not good. They did write up a case, but suggested since this impacts a 3rd party app that Chirp should make a change to pick up the “missing/lost” compression functionality. If there are others who upgrade to MacOS 10.13.1 and see the same error sequences, reporting such would possibly move the issue up in priority. Let me know. I’ll share the case number, but i would caution that unnecessarily pinging them without cause, will not help us. I too am having trouble since migrating to the latest MacOS. When I initiate an Upload from Chirp to my Yaesu VX6-R (note: I placed a mirror so I could watch the lights on the cable usb connector.) I get both the red and green lights lit simultaneously. They remain lit for a short while and the chirp progress screen shows a few blocks before the lights stop; the chirp progress screen continues for a couple of seconds; but ERROR has already popped up on the vx6r screen displayed on the vx6r. Hi chirp users, I cant get chirp running on OS X. I remember having this issue ages ago and ended up just using linux. I have followed instructions at http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/MacOS_Tips#Application-Secur… and granted privs to app with $ spctl --add $PWD whilst in the folder, subsequently prompted for user/pass. Chirp doesn't open by double clicking, one bounce in dock then disappears. Trying to open from terminal reveals LSOpenURLsWithRole() failed with error -10810 for the file /Users/myhomedir/Downloads/chirp-daily-20171104.app Any help appreciated, as I must be missing something? PS I am on OS X 10.12.5 Simon

I'm attempting to program a second BF-F8+ radio identical to my first one, but no matter what I try I can not get the power on beep to turn off. I have verified all settings in CHIRP to be correct, as well as those in the radio (to the best of my knowledge). One radio does not beep on power up (which is what I prefer), the other does. Any suggestions?

You don't say what the unit is. If it is e.g. a VHF-only device with only about 20 repeater channels you could do worse than pasting a screen-shot into Word via Paint and printing it. Very easy to do, and useful provided you don't want to alter it very often. I recently bought a BTech UV-5x3 and found that the Wouxun cable works just fine for it...sort of. I had to trim away a lot of the rubber/plastic so it fits all the way into the radio. On my Win7 machine I had no problem loading frequencies. My Win10 machine, however, was a different story. It kept replacing the working cable driver with the "best" driver that doesn't work at all. So I cracked open the USB end and replaced the Prolific interface with an FTDI interface. After finding out that the RxD and TxD wires are reversed, I got it going on both machines. I have noticed multiple bug reports for this issue but not sure if there is a resolution. WHen programming a TYT9800 (i have the "plus" with repeaters, The offset is not saved properly to the memory. I believe that it actually saves the TX/RX frequencies so the repeater will work as long as you do not change anything. Hi all, I have done a search regarding support for the Baofeng GT-5TP as I didn’t find it in the list when connecting to it. I recently got a couple as I have had UV-5R’s and wanted new less beaten up handhelds. CHIRP doesn’t like them when selecting other model numbers, the results range from just timing out/reporting wrong model/ reporting too much data. The CHIRP Site says to use “UV-82HP” It errors out with “Incorrect ‘Model’ selected” (on version “daily-20171104”) I have been able to use the extremely hokey application from Baofeng called “UV82 Series Program Software.( US2S35 VIP Version)” The details of firmware I can find when turning on are: (“3” when turning on) Ver N82301 (“5” when turning on) 160408N Any suggestions/updates appreciated. If there is any steps I can provide or give report access to my pc with the radio attached please let me know. I don’t model making international calls either. But until that happens for you, as simple workaround is to set TOT to it's lowest value. The the radio will only transmit for 15 seconds and timeout. Then download from the radio into CHIRP, program a channel that has TX inhibited (Duplex = "off"). You can then set TOT back to its original value and from now on select the TX inhibited channel whenever you are going to program your radio. Jim

Tried adding myself to the dial out. I have also used this cable before successfully so I don't think it's a cable issue. I can turn on the radio with the cable plugged into the radio and disconnected from the computer and it doesn't transmit. Still having the same problem after trying all the solutions. I have a machine running Ubuntu Mate. When I connect and turn on my Baofeng UV-5R radio it will transmit and will not let me use Chirp. I also have a Windows 7 computer that does the same thing. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, I saved the original image and no it doesn't upload any better than the modified one originally attempted. Since it doesn't even read everything in from the radio anymore it appears to be getting to something telling it it has reached the end of the data that isn't supposed to be there. The CHIRP program gives an error because not as much data as expected is read in. Trying to write anything locks things up and resets the radio after either about 1/2 uploading or 1/4 of the way uploading. It doesn't stop at the same place consistently, but it is always one of those 2 places, not 3/4 and not 1/3. Since Baofeng/BTECH tells people to use CHIRP they ought to know what to do you would think, . . . and it can't be the first time it has ever happened. Something during the first attempt of uploading new settings changed a few of the things. For example the sound (beeps and voice) were turned off like specified. The "WELCOME" message disappeared, but the 2 names I entered in place of that didn't make it in. The expansion of the VHF lower limit down to 130 MHz (from the default 136 MHz) didn't make it in. A strange thing I did notice when manually entering channels on the radio itself was that after the attempted upload of new settings the VHF2 band didn't appear when cycling through the bands with the Band button. However, after I entered in a frequency from within the band it does cycle through all 3 bands again. Strange. . . . I used the last Menu item to Rest ALL and the other reset in that same place as well. That didn't change the ability to upload or download but put the voice and beep settings back to default. Still no "WELCOME" message when it is turned on though. One set of other things I did modify in the changed settings that was first uploaded (and failed/locked things up) was besides unchecking all of the DTMF Decode boxes I deleted all of the numeric codes so the boxes were entirely empty. I don't know if that would change the length of the file and screw things up or not. (???) There was no error from CHIRP saying it couldn't be done. Signal Code 1 was also deleted and completely empty too in the DTMF Encode settings. I connected everything and immediately (and easily) downloaded from the radio (BTECH UV-5X3) 1 time and then nothing else works. . . . No complete uploads or downloads now. I made some edits to settings of the initial download and tried uploading it back. It stopped at about halfway . . . and like every time since then the screen flashed to all the LED icons activated (like when it is first turned on) and then nothing. Just sits there. Disconnected, restarted computer, connected and tried downloading and it doesn't even finish downloading now. It gives an error about not the right amount of data were encountered and then exits. A second attempt might say the same thing, but after enough attempts it locks things up. No uploads (even of the original unmodified image file) finish. I've tried volume settings from highest to very low. All the same results and on an inactive frequency. Anybody have any ideas?

Y'all, I've been trying to get CHIRP to work with the Baofeng UV-5R-3 Tribander (144/220/440). When I first reported this to the place that I bought it (Main Trading Company in Paris Texas), they said that they were overnighting a radio to CHIRP developers to work on it. I believe, "there are ways" to prevent particular drivers from updating, but not being a Windows user at home any more, I can't say how you'd do that. Blocking all updates, is *not* recommended, in this insecure day and age. Best to use a newer cable with genuine chip-set in (it doesn’t have to be Prolific) though that can be difficult to impossible to check without breaking it out of the packaging, and even then, not always easy for many... If it's any consolation (probably not) 10's of 1000's of genuine companies got caught out by the Prolific counterfeiters to their (and our) cost. The only guaranteed way to get a genuine chip-set, is to buy direct from the makers, or their official agents, but as well as the cost, you then you have to make up an adapter from RS232 to whatever connector the rig of interest uses. But, isn't that what were all supposed to be able to do? (Tin hat at the ready!) Such an adapter would be good to have anyway I think. Regards. Dave B. PS: I have personally come across, a "so called" (and marked up as) FTDI chip, but it identified itself as, and worked as a Prolific chip! The counterfeiters are using micro-controllers programmed to emulate the genuine chips, and other than a few esoteric little used functions (changing the function of I/O lines etc) they have actually done quite an impressive (I'm not saying good) job. Someone programmed that one wrongly, or forgot to set it's emulation mode. Take care. >><<

But also found:- http://www.g4hfq.co.uk/ftb2d.html But see the link "Withdrawn from sale" that goes to:- http://www.g4hfq.co.uk/c4fm_radios.htm Does not look promising. As it is possible to clone from one rig to another, presumably by using a "special" mini USB to mini USB cable? (i.e. non standard.)Â Bob HFD has done an amazing job getting as far as he did with the original firmware shipped with the radios. Perhaps the Chirp dev team could work with Bob G4HFD to a common end? I do also see some comments that it may be possible to edit the radio's config file, by saving it to a SD card, and putting that in a PC, but I couldn't find any details as to the structure of the files(s) used. This is another way for big companies to tie users into their expensive infrastructure, at the users expense.Â Â And, when the companies decide it's an old product and drop support, your on your own. No doubt over time someone will reverse engineer it, to our benefit, and Yaesu's shagrin, but that might "take a while." 73. Dave B.

Hello Everyone, I was curious if anyone here knows of a good source for 4-pin TRRS connectors or solder pigtails that will fit *PROPERLY* into Yaesu HTs like the FT1? Argent Data sells one but it looks like it might be too wide at the tip: https://www.argentdata.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=68 At $6/ea, is not exactly cheap and it only offers three out of the four wires. I'm also curious if the threaded-style TRRS connectors will work ok for non-threaded radios. I would assume so but thought I'd ask. There are connectors like these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/172931701263?catId=12576&item=172931701263&rmv… but I've always found these contact solder-type connectors very difficult to get a good, lasting solder contact to. There are also some pre-made cables that look "promising" but I have no idea if they would actually fit deeply enough (they seem fairly narrow at the tip) but are all four wires connected? --David KI6ZHD

I downloaded CHIRP from the Web Site to WD 10 and after the down load was completed there was no sign of a CHIRP shortcut on my desk top. Went to C: (x86) CHIRP and found shortcut. I dragged the shortcut to Desktop. I clicked on the CHIRP ICON and Chirp loaded. I then installed the Baofeng USB Programming Cable for Baofeng Two way Radio UV-5R, BF-888S,BF-F8+ With Driver CD to my BF-F8HP Radio. I attempted to install the Driver CD and found it corrupted. I thought that my windows 10 had the most up to date USB Driver and I would not need the one that came with the Programing Cable. I may have been wrong and do need a special Driver. I than plugged the programing Cable in to the USB Port and then the Radio, turned the Radio on, started CHIRP, clicked the Radio Menu, input vendor info, started download. Message: Due to the fact that the manufacturer continues to release new versions of the firmware with obscure and hard-to-track changes, this driver may not work with your device. Thus far and to the best knowledge of the author, no UV-5R radios have been harmed by using CHIRP. However, proceed at your own risk! Typed USB in port assignment box and tried again with the following results. Do I need a special USB Driver? Can anyone help me with this problem? Thanks in advance, Scott

Who has tested the FT2DR radio with linux? What USB cable did you use? My spidey senses are telling me no one has tested this combination. Chirp works fine with my FT7900 and a FTDI cable. It appears the cable provided with the FT2DR is not a 232 converter. I am also guessing that there is a PL2303 chip in the radio. (Yaesu provides PL2303 drivers for windows.) This feature is useful if you have one radio that you only program from PC-to-Radio, and if you are using CHIRP to keep track of Frequencies. The minute you read the channels off a radio (Radio-to-PC) in the other direction, the location field and the notes field would be empty. And it would likely be a chore to transplant your location data and notes from another CHIRP programming list. I believe the columns present in CHIRP are an aggregation of programmable fields found across multiple radios that are CHIRP compatible. ~baji / K 8 I I T . _ . _ . In the database fields it would be super helpful if there was a field for location. A field long enough to spell out a city or locations something like Santiago Peak. I understand this would not appear in the Baofeng radio display but just having it in the Chirp data base would be very helpful. Even a notes field to use for this would be great. thanks!

Without the -20 (or other number) you'll get 10 lines by default. Try:- dmesg on it's own as a comparison! ;-) See:- man tail for details of the tail filter. ~~~ If you have the radio's user manual, and it has all the CAT commands etc described, install "cutecom" A nice little graphical serial terminal program... sudo apt update && sudo apt install cutecom Should do the trick. (You'll only be asked for your password once.) (Launch it from the command line with just cutecom or find it in the "Other" menu choices from the Mint menu button, at least that's where it is on this box.) Then you can try to manually communicate with the rig, to try out the interface. That can be another "steep learning curve" but it'll do you good to learn how to do such things for the future, especially with bit rate, data bits, parity and so on. Hope something helps. I have been trying to use the cord that came with the radio. I have even tried connecting the radio and turning it on to clone mode to see if a tty port is created, no joy... It would appear that the cable provided with my radio is not a "smart" cable and even connecting to the radio does not create a port. Who tested the FT2DR? And what cord did they use? Rick
