It seems that the entire Ubuntu Launchpad build computer farm is undergoing kernel patching for the recent Spectre and Meltdown Intel (and a few others) CPU problems. Other project groups have said. [chirp_users] Linux PPA problem?

I'm using Ubuntu linux here and a couple days ago I got the new daily build available e-mail notice but I never got the new version when I did a system upgrade. Today I looked at the Chirp Launchpad PPA page and it shows the latest chirp-daily is 20180104 but then it says "5 packages waiting to build". Is the PPA broken or something? -- Tom ND5Y

Thanks for all who responded to my query. I learned a great deal...especially that CHIRP is not a "stand alone" app, and stores lists in other areas. With that knowledge, I am now sure I can figure out my inputting mistakes, as to why my additions to the initial list (and in the separate "missing" list) don't seem to get saved, even though I use the SAVE button religiously. With all your great responses, I am confident I will find what I am doing wrong. Thanks very much to all responders, and to the authors of CHIRP. It is really needed.

Geez, guys. My question seems like an easy one to answer. Will no one respond to my issue? I saved a new programming list to CHIRP (Macbook/Valley Enterprise cable/Yaesu FT-60) but I can't find it. One other earlier list shows in the "menu bar", but how do I find the second list? I new-named it, and then re-"saved" the list every 10 frequencies. Where the devil does it live, and how do I get it front-and-center when I need to upload it to a new radio? Or if the software reads my "new list" as no more than added frequencies to the initial one, why are the new frequencies not showing in the original list? Thanks

Hi. Other than for software that just isn't available for anything other than Windows, there is no reason whatsoever to try to use WINE to run Chirp under Linux. There is even a "Live CD" (bootable self contained system) version! As well as the ability to run it directly from a "tarball" file once the contents are extracted. https://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Running_Under_Linux I do have some Windows specific programs that I need to use, that do run well under WINE, but sadly the DMR codeplug software from Motorola will not install, as the installer needs .NET version whatever, and the Mono equivalent tools are not compatible. All my other radio programming and configuring needs are happily done via Chirp running natively under Linux. As to the serial port issue, it's a "symbolic link" that you create, that in effect redirects references to (for example) COM1: to /dev/ttyUSB0 Job done. As you say, instructions are available how to do that from many sources. I would also dispute the assumption re the probably low importance of the handshake lines. Many radio's use them to enter programming mode, enable some esoteric mode, and/or exit from such modes. It is best to use the version of Chirp, that is natively configured for your OS, rather than try to bludgeon it into working via an abstraction layer, that can itself impose "other feature" you may not want.. 73. Hi again. Other thought. Are you running as a user with "permissions" to use Serial ports? In some of the Linux world, that'd be, as a member of the "Dialout" group. (I have no idea if Mac OS, though based on BSD uses the same scheme.) Do you have other USB/serial port adapter using equipment/gadgets that do work OK, if so you could look into and find out how that references attached USB<>RS232 devices. Also, after some googling (Always your first port of call) I see others with similar problems, who found that using an external USB hub device (connected via the Thunderbolt main port) allowed all sorts of "other" vendor kit to work, that just would not when connected directly to the Mac. (Mac Mini's in those cases I think.) Maybe the Serial adapters are asking for too much power? Unlikely, but? Lastly, you say you "Ran all the terminal codes." but you don't actually list exactly what you tried, and what the results were. I don't know how exactly, but I suspect that even Mac's have a command line option, or even a GUI tool, to examine what hardware you have connected to what port and tell you how it would appear to an application, or tell you why it can't be used. I see many Mac users attempting to use them for Ham Radio work. Unless they are using pre-made commercial applications designed and built for Mac's, they usually have lots of trouble. (There are exceptions.) You need to list the exact computer model, specification and version you have, the exact OS version you're running, plus any error or alert messages you get, from commands you try. Then, someone else here who's also a Mac user will probably be able to guide you through the maze and hopefully get it sorted. 73. Dave G0WBX. Thanks for adding me to the mailing list. I have two Yaesu radios, FT-60 dual bander and FT-2900 2m mobile. I would like to use programming software to set up both radios. It seems that my biggest problem is I have a Mac laptop and not a PC. RT Systems carries a great amount of radios that they have the software for, but it is all Windows driven and apparently work arounds for Mac are a lot of trouble. So much for RT Systems. I have heard from members of my ARC that CHIRP is really the only way to go, until I tell them I have a Mac. Many told me, “Good luck! You’re on your own”. It is strange that Mac users, with ham radio, are left out in the cold. I have a MacBook Pro with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor. I have macOS High Sierra, Ver 10.13.2. From what I have seen on the CHIRP website, High Sierra has not been interfaced with CHIRP, yet. Before I spend money on programming cables for either of my radios, I need to know if my OS will be compatible with CHIRP and, not being a software geek on Apple products, how much pain may I encounter with loading CHIRP and successfully using a CSV file to program frequencies into either of my Yaesu rigs. The only info I'd add, is to find out how to prevent your OS from sleeping an application and also from powering down what it things are unused USB ports. I'm not a Mac owner/user, but I hear that "AppNap" causes *A LOT* of issues. Also, research and find out how the serial ports are identified on your particular system, and how to search for those that *Really* exist. Mac OS's are based on BSD, so there might be some help there. Find out how to get to a command line terminal display, and learn the basics of how to search for and do stuff there. Just as the rest of us with other 'Nix related boxes have learnt. (ls /dev/ttyUSB* for example will list the real existing ports on a debian/ubuntu based Linux system.) dave@G0WBX-Dell-System-XPS-L502X ~ $ ls /dev/ttyUSB* /dev/ttyUSB0 /dev/ttyUSB1 /dev/ttyUSB2 /dev/ttyUSB3 That is on my Linux Mint box, but Mac's / BSD's etc will almost certainly have something similar. "|ls /dev/tty.*"| As one website I found indicates... Not having a mac here, I cant test that. Also, as Randy said, steer clear of clone chip-sets. ONLY buy stuff like that from authorised resellers, not eBay. Disclaimer! I have had good genuine stuff from eBay, but I've also had a lot of clone rubbish. (I did have one chip that was physically marked up with the FTDI logo and part number etc, but when connected to a computer, it announced itself as a Prolific chip! I felt sorry for the seller, who was non technical, just acting as a re-seller themselves. We figured out he had over a thousand fake devices. He was not happy, but apologised gave me a full refund without asking, and took the devices back. For that alone I gave him good feedback.) Yes, it'll probably cost more from DigiKey or ??? But you'll know you have the "Genuine" article, and if it proves otherwise, you can return it. "Silicon Labs" (SiLabs) devices are good too. Linux recognises them OK, I have no idea regarding Mac OS's. It has to be said though, that a lot of the current clones are actually quite functional, unless you want to do something special, like re-assign the I/O pins, as you are supposed to be able to do with FTDI parts. (A useful feature, for radio programming leads.) Lastly, don't trust pre-made leads from eBay. Again, I'm sure there are good ones, but again I've also found via others experiences, that there is a lot of stuff there is wired wrong, & very wrong at times! (Mind you, some of the radio manuals are very misleading in this respect too.) Best if possible to build your own programming cables. It's not difficult at all, it just takes a little time to learn about it, and build and test etc. But, in the long term, you can then build/adapt a cable "on the fly" when needed. 73 and Happy New Year to All of the Chirp team. Hi Guys: Newbie here got through to a Macbook/CHIRP hook-up through the Valley Enterprise cable for the Yaesu FT60, but I can't seem to get the program to update new frequency entries. I got the initial input to a "Save As" page (image?) for the 2M repeaters, but I decided to make a new "Save As" list after adding the 440 repeater frequencies, dutifully "saving" to the new list every 10 frequencies for safety. But now I can't find the second new, updated list anywhere. I thought maybe Chirp wouldn't pull it up unless I was in the "RX" mode (since the initial Chirp "save" list was just a dupe of the TX list now in my radio), but going to "Import" mode didn't do anything other than show the initial 2M repeater page. How do I pull up the second "Saved As" list that I know, short of a bug in Chirp, exists somewhere in the software? Thx...Peter K1PBR

[chirp_users] Yaesu VX-8DR Won't communicate

Anyone have any advice on getting my new Yaesu VX-8DR to communicate? Each time I try the radio will show "ERROR" after a few moments and a short time later CHIRP will show "An error has occurred Failed to communicate with the radio: No response from radio" I've tried the following:-2 different cables (one Prolific from GoodQBuy and one FTDI from Valley Enterprises) both produce same result.-Setting radio into clone mode and starting to transmit only after starting receive in CHIRP.-Downloaded newest version of CHIRP.-Ran updates and rebooted PC.-Switched USB ports (with cables).-Updated drivers for both cables.-Factory reset on radio.-Selected other radio models when downloaded (VX-8, VX-8R and VX-8GE).-Checked connection at the radio and it appears to be tight. I've used CHIRP on Baofeng, BTECH and a few other brands/models and never encountered an issue that wasn't easily resolved. Any help or advice is much appreciated! -73Brian WB2EE

I followed Two Way Radios Instructions to install to my Baofeng UV 5R-3. I downloaded from radio to Chirp software. Then I Accessed the repeater data base to select 2 meter and 70 cm. repeaters. This was successful but I couldn't download the chosen repeaters to the radio. the "downoad to radio" was gray and no matter what I tried I was unable to download to the radio. I have a script which I use to keep fldigi updated. It works by making a temporary copy the download page URL, using grep to extract the name of the latest tar.gz file, and then downloading and installing that file. However, wget now fails ... complaining about an expired certificate (see output below). Can an updated certificate be installed on the web server? [chirp_users] CHIRP Installation problem (Win7-64bit)

Hello all, this is my first post here. I have used Chirp for connecting with my Baofeng UV 5R in the past. Today I got a new computer (nominally very similar to the old one): ThinkPad T460 64 bit with Windows 7. I have downloaded the CHIRP daily installer and when I start to install (after being asked about the location for the installation) I get the message that I copy below. If I hit Ignore another similar message comes up (with a missing .dll file) and so on many others error messages appear. I have restarted the computer several times (as I am installing other programs as well), but nothing has changed. Do you have any suggestion on what I am missing? Thanks! ed [image: Inline image 1]

Hi, I work at a camp and conference center in southern New Mexico. We are remotely located and have poor cell coverage so we utilize radios to communicate around the camp. We have a repeater in our main office with an antenna on top of the building and a license to use the frequency that it broadcast at. For years we have bought our radios from a company that would program them and then mail them to us, ready to use out of the box. For a long time we were buying Kenwood TK-3200's and then we switched to some RCA radios because they were a little cheaper. Recently though we bought a pack of Baofeng BF-888S's on Amazon for WAY cheaper than the other radios we had been buying. The guy who set our repeater up programmed them using CHIRP and sent them to us with some basic instructions. The only issue we have is that our repeater broadcasts our CW ID every 30 minutes and the new Baofeng radios pick it up every time. Our old Kenwood and RCA radios do not pick this up unless someone happens to be using their radio during the CW ID broadcast. Other than that though the Kenwood and RCA's never pick it up. If there is a way, we would like to change the programming on the Baofeng radios so that they do not hear the CW ID broadcast. Does anybody know how to make that happen? Neither the Kenwood or RCA radios are supported by CHIRP so we can't see what the settings are on these radios. The cord that came with the Baofeng radios to connect to the computer also fits the Kenwood but not the RCA. Also, I am completely new to radios and their programming. I am just trying to fix this one problem. Thanks for any help Korey

I am a newbie trying to program a UV5RV2 using an FTDI cable with a MacBook Pro running 10.7.5. Agreed. Comma Separated Variable (CSV)a d Tab Separated Variable (TSV) are the most universal formats to transfer between spreadsheet programs, which includes CHIRP (and other radio programming software). You can use Excel, etc to print it out as a reference sheet out in the field. [chirp_users] MacOS 10.13.1 breaks FTDI drivers?

After loading High Sierra (10.13.1) last night, my macbook running the current version of Chirp will no longer communicate with any of my radios. Moving the same radio and cable to another Mac, also running the 20171104 version of Chirp, everything is normal. It appears that although the FTDI cable is recognized in the System Report on the USB bus, Chirp can no longer reach the serial interface on the radio. I reloaded Python runtime module, but no improvement. Also went to FTDI and loaded their v2.4.2 drivers for MacOS. Also no help. Chirp’s debug log keeps saying “Radio did not respond” My FTDI cable has LEDs. When attached to the 10.13.1 machine, no lights are flashing when attempting to download from the radio or upload to the radio. Any suggestions for next steps? Debug log attached. - Charley

Has anyone else experienced this and can let me know what is happening? I am experiencing a Chirp human interface display peculiarity using the Mac OS-X version: When the menu “/View/Hide_Tab_Bar” is selected the on-screen pointer behaves properly; that is the tip of the arrow cursor causes on-screen objects to highlight when hovering above the object, and objects activate when clicked; nothing abnormal. When the menu “/View/Show_Tab_Bar” is selected, the on-screen pointer behaves abnormally; that is on-screen objects highlight and activate when the tip of the arrow cursor is higher on the screen than the object highlighting or being activated. The distance of this offset error appears to be about the height of the “Tab_Bar” that is being shown or hidden. The horizontal placement of cursor tip is correct. Software versions I am using now are as follows: CHIRP daily-20171204 GTK 2.24.10 PyGTK 2.22.0 Python 2.7.2 macOS High Sierra version 10.13.1 (17B1003) I observed this on my Macintosh as far back as a version that identifies as “Chirp 0.3.1” Thanks for the insights - Jerry

I know it's not on the list for CHIRP, but you seem like a bright bunch 😊 Somebody is dumping these things on Aussie Ebay with a bizarre assortment of 145 MHz simplex frequencies in them. It would seem that my program cable for my old Baofeng UV-3R is more or less appropriate, but the "read" is pretty garbled when letting CHIRP try to auto-discover. Thanks in advance John VK4TJ

I cannot get my new radio (Baofeng model UV-5R-3 tri-band from MTC) to respond to a "Download From Radio" using CHIRP. The radio shows no indication that it is being accessed. My other Baofeng (regular UV-5R) is working on the same computer as expected. The CHIRP version I am using : CHIRP daily-20171126 GTK 2.24.10 PyGTK 2.24.0 Python 2.7.3 The CHIRP error message: Error reading data from radio: not the amount of data we want. Radio selected in CHIRP: BTECH UV-5X3 I understand that the driver (uv5x3.py) has been patched to include this new model, but its not working for me. Are there any suggestions on how to cure this ...other than buy a better radio?

Found an issue with CHIRP and the 8800. The radio has a left side and right side with 512 memories on each side, but the program only gives access to 500 each side. You cannot change the other 12 memories each. Can this be corrected? I have tried to update the range of memories, it doesn’t work. Thank you. I have used chirp on my baofeng and my kenwood with awesome results. I just got a icom 7100 and I am not able to get chirp to talk to it. I have tried different computers (both w10 if that matters) and different usb cables (the one that came with the radio and another I had). I installed the USB driver software from icom and when the radio is plugged in to either computer I see com4 and com5. When I tell chirp to read from radio on com4 and tell it the radio is an icom and to auto detect the model chrip sees that its an ic-7100 but I get 1 memory per second and the name is error. If I try to put something into the memory chirp comes back and says timeout error. I saw a bug report that someone posted about the ic-7100 saying their civ address was set wrong and the fix was to use 88h. Mine is set to 88h and it does not work. Does anyone have any tips/tricks/suggestions to help me get chirp to talk to my new ic-7100? Thanks.

It probably uses a fake Prolific chipset, all too common sadly. Windows will not use those now, unless you roll back the driver, but then Windows will "update" it to the latest again at the next opportunity. If you turn Windows updates off, then you are potentially vulnerable for other troubles as they are found later. They still work OK on most Linux's though, as does Chirp just fine. Solution, use a FTDI based cable (if you can find a seller to guarantee that they are genuine too) or build your own cable with a known genuine USB<>Serial chip. The "Genuine" Prolific chips are OK in Windows. Silicon Lab's chips are OK too, but you'll have to install drivers yourself for them, except on Linux, where they "just work" without issue on most distro's. Note: The "Fake" chips, are actually micro-controllers programmed to emulate Prolific or FTDI chips. The emulations are quite good, but can be detected by the "official" drivers. The current official Prolific drivers will not use the Fakes. Similarly, FTDI drivers will not use the fakes either. Earlier FTDI drivers would "brick" them by resetting the VID/PID values to zero. Caused a lot of bad press that did. (But they can be un-bricked!) The fake FDTI chips can be identified as being unable to re-assign the auxiliary I/O pin functions. Well, the software is happy, but the change doesn’t actually happen. That's how I found one, I needed to invert the TXD line, but no change happened. I have also personally come across a chip that was marked up as FTDI, but identified itself to the PC as Prolific! I suspect there are undocumented ways to "configure" the emulation. Take care. 73. Bought a Hesenate transceiver and cannot get to connect to PC. I also purchased a Baofeng cable & downloaded CHIRP from the Chirp web site for windows. Do I need a special driver for the software to connect or does it come imbedded in the software? The spread sheet shows under file new but cannot save entries made. Ray

As I had an old TM-G707 installed in the car recently tried to use CHIRP for this radio to. Can get the current contents of the memory, and manage to get most of the repeaters loaded into the radio. But it seems to skip the ones with a intermediate 12.5Khz value. 145.600 is ok, 145.6125 is not getting in. Can manually update the skipped ones so it seems it is not the radio by definition blocking these values. Seems an issue with the software. But maybe you all know if there is a pre-requisite in the radio settings that would enable this 12.5Khz raster frequencies to get accepted. Many thanks in advance. RE: BTECH UV-25X4. I'd like to see a service settings option to adjust the squelch thresholds. This radio has no squelch hysterisis and on simplex, the squelch will close on fading signals. I have submitted a feature request to the chirp tree.
