I recently ordered this TENQ "cloning" cable from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MK02BX2 This cable has Kenwood style connectors (3.5mm TRS & 2.5mm TRS) on each end, for radio-to-radio configuration copy between Baofeng, Wouxun, and "any two-pin style radio with a Kenwood Baofeng plug". I wanted to verify the pinout before adding it to my radio bag. So I spent several hours scouring the Internet for a wiring diagram for such a cable, but with no success. Even simple pinout descriptions were somewhat vague ("back-to-back", etc.). So I ultimately buzzed out the cable with a DVM, tabulated the results, and mocked up a JPEG diagram based on an image that originally came from Miklor.com. See attached for the finished product. The diagram shows that the cable basically has Data Tx from one end connected to Data Rx on the other and vice-versa, with Data Ground connected between both ends. I wanted to submit this to John for possible inclusion on his site, but I don't see any contact form there. I do know that he posts to this list so here I am... Peter - at least you have a cable that you can easily chop up to make a connection to something else. I recently had to make a TNC cable for the baofeng using individual 3.5 and 2.5mm connectors. You can cut your up and get 2 for one! [chirp_users] Can't program Kenwood TM-G707 using CHIRP and FTDI cable from valley-ent.com

Problem: I can't program Kenwood TM-G707 using CHIRP and the FTDI cable from valley-ent.com When running the "Download from Radio" menu command, I am getting stopped by an error message in CHIRP: An error has occurred could not open port COM3: [Error 5] Acccess is denied I am experienced with CHIRP and the Kenwood TM-G707 is listed as a supported radio. I have had success with Baofeng radios and Yaesu radios with both BTech and valley-ent.com FTDI cables. Valley-ent sent me a replacement cable...same error message. I confirmed the Com port assignment in Device Mgr (Win 10 and 7). I have tried installing the latest drivers and have tried installing the old 2007 drivers. Have experimented w. 3 different Win 10 computers and one Windows 7 machine. HELP, please and thank you. - Mike Mc -

I purchased a BTECH uv-5x3 and also the USB cable to program from the computer. The CHIRP program does not recognize the USB cable and only gives me the COM3 option. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

I have 4 of these radios , I connected one to my win 10 (with rs 232 built in) started chirp and was able to read and wright to two of these radios . Hi, I got the new variation on the uv-5r (uv-5r ex). Trying to get it to program I kept getting "radio fail to respond". I discovered if you put pressure on the radio end of the cable you can read the radio. Evidently the jack is recessed a little more than on that model so it won't reach to make contact. You might can trim the connector back a bit and make it work. I'll try that next..73 Alan --

I have another spanner to throw into the works: If you use CTCSS codes to activate repeaters then you might well end up using the same pair of repeater channels several times over but with different CTCSS codes. In the UK there were 38 different CTCSS tones available last time I looked, and 16 repeater channels on 2m. So you need 608 memories to deal with every possible combination of repeater channel and CTCSS code. Check in your users' manual to see for that particular model. Most have 127 (128 if you count channel 0) channels, although it get fun when you have some of the later ones with dual and tri-band thngies. CHIRP calls the "Memories" in the upper left of the page. Well, CHirp is actually supposed to open as a window with no content. The content doesn;t show up until you read from a radio, open a file, or import from the various sources. With regard to using the PPAs, I'm far from an expert, but my first guess would be that you need to uninstall the chirp you got from the ubuntu software stre befire attempting to use the PPAs. The metadata region begins with a magic string followed by a base64-encoded json blob. I figure we can call all images created up until now "version zero" format, since they really aren't formatted at all. Any major format changes after this can increment the counter in the magic (although it's unlikely we would need to). The metadata currently saved includes the radio model details and the class used at the time the file was created. All existing images will still load, but when they are saved, will be augmented with metadata. Note that this will mean images saved from newer versions of chirp will not be readable by older versions which will be confused by the metadata. One major feature this brings is the ability to make radio aliases (and other weak subclasses) be "sticky" across save/load cycles. Right now if you download with an alias (such as the Arcshell AR-6 alias of the BF-888), the file will be detected and reported as a BF-888 from that point forward. With metadata in the image, we can properly select the alias on load to provide better UX. This includes some low-effort tweaking of the directory and clone code to select the right radio class based on metadata if present, and to properly return a radio class for the alias, if one matches. We might want to re-structure the alias class arrangement after this to make them properly-registered and fully-functional subclasses so that the hacky DynamicRadioAlias subclassing done here isn't necessary. Also note that the generic saving code will not append metadata for filenames not ending in .img, to preserve behavor for .vx5 files, etc. If a filename forces a non-standard file extension, the metadata will not be added and the result will be effectively the same as the older format (which then may not be loaded properly if it is mis-detected as a different model). Dan, et alia: I am interested in getting an inexpensive HT that is Tri-Band and decent. Now, if anyone is a technical purist about specifications I already realize that any of the sub-$100 HTs are not going to come close to the ICOM 52A or something like that. I am considering to get an HT that is inexpensive and not something I will cry over if I drop it or it gets lost/stolen, whatever. However, with the forgoing in mind, I want to try to pick the best one that I can, so I am curious about everyone's ideas. Moreover, I surely want something that is compatible with Chirp and to get or make the right kind of cable for it. The one radio I looked at so far was the BaoFeng UV-5x3 (I own no 220 radios, so it'd be fun to have that capability too). I am driving cross country soon and don't have any radios to take with me (they are all in the east coast). Once I get there I will have some ICOM radios (ICOM 5100A and an ID-1 installed). Again, I am not out to start a "religious war", just get some opinions from people about (obviously) programmability (keypad and via computer) as well as day to day function and experiences. Thanks for the link. I have read the info. But the error does not appear to be a driver, port, or cable problem. I was really looking for a reason for the error in order to troubleshoot further. [chirp_users] MTC uv-5r-3 Self-inflicted problem

I just got a Baofeng UV5R-3 from MTCRadio. I didn't realize that the radio could be found under MTC for the brand, but in the meantime I found that I could upload from it in regular UV5R mode. I ended up downloading an image to it from a regular UV5R. Then I discovered that Chirp had it covered already under MTC. I have tried resetting it and uploading from it, but i can't get it to work. Does anyone have a known-good image that I could attempt to load onto the phone and make it happy again? Or any other advice? My son also bought one and hasn't tried programming his yet. I have warned him of my folly and asked him to save me a blank image file from his when he gets around to it. Thanks, Bruce W8BPM

Programmed some radios for club members and successfully programmed a couple of UV-5Rs. The a guy showed up with a GT-3. Used the GT-3WP selection and tried to upload a file. I got some kind of firmware mismatch message. Did spend a lot of time with it, but just asking if anyone has run across this problem and how to fix.... de NH6BF

I have recently purchased a BTech two bander, have several other similar 2M/.70cm HT’s that work great; still not sure if it is programmed correctly on 220, receives local repeat fine but doesn’t seem to open it. Unfortunately it isn’t used much. Used CHIRP to program it and it only has CTSS on up. Also found a Yeasu FT24 HT on sale for under $70 dual band, very nice little radio. I had installed the driver for a USB cable from Valley Enterprise for my Yaesu FT-60. Three installs and it (Mac) finally recognized the driver and cable. That was six months back. I acquired another cable for my Yaesu FT-29 2m radio. I must have got an OS update (High Sierra OS, version 10.13.6) that I cannot call up the drivers for either one (it should be only one driver upgrade). I haven’t even got to the part of trying to get Chirp to frustrate me! I know there are folks out there that have more computer smarts than I, especially when it comes to Mac. I am trying to install the most recent CHIRP files and get an error. When I try to execute the installer file chirp-daily-20180707-installer.exe I get an error message "Error Opening File for Writing c:\ProgramFiles\(x86)CHIRP\_ctypes.pyd. The problem I have, and it was apparent in earlier versions but seems to be a serious issue with the most recent early July version. while programming when you move to the next line the settings for the PL tones on the previous line you just used change, whether or not you hit the save button; The most common setting reverting to is a PL tone of 88.5. Also does not want to keep settings when repeater use a stone instead of TSQL (A one-sided tone repeater). I am having great difficulty programming a B Tech hand held in 220.
