Radio: QYT KT8900 (no "D" - just the KT8900) CHIRP Version: daily-20181018 (latest I believe) OS: macOS 10.13.6 (but shouldn't matter in this case) In CHIRP, under Settings > Work Mode Settings you are able to specify "MR A channel" and "MR B channel" as the default channels your radio starts on (assuming the VFO/MR mode is set to Channel). This has worked for me previously - but a while ago something changed. I don't have an exact timeline - in the last 6 months or less I believe. Screenshot for reference: https://www.dropbox.com/s/mt458zbn8t8zx74/Screenshot%202018-11-13%2010.34.1… MR A channel setting is still "respected", but no matter what I put in MR B channel the radio starts up on channel 1. I tried changing it to other channels (and saving then uploading) multiple times but there is no change. When I change MR A it gets applied, but not MR B. Any ideas? I went back and grabbed the oldest .img file I had (from May) and it is still happening, so I don't think it's an issue with the image file. Anyone with a QYT KT8900 that can test this as well? Bottom Line: Frequency off just enough to be annoying. I programmed my NEW FT-70D using chirp and had issues with the frequency being slightly off. More detail to come, I hope that the community has a good/quick solution. Maybe the issue was with my tuning steps. Version 20181018 Daily Version Thanks, Roy

Hi Phillip, Chris here. I don't know anything about Apples so I might be wrong... If you've only got Bluetooth in a Connect menu then doesn't that mean that no hardware (wired) ports are currently available for data Tx/Rx? Assuming that a USB connector is available for data Tx/Rx (and not just for charging) then it might need enabling via a setting before it will appear on the Connect menu. Alternatively, the Connect menu might be specific to Bluetooth only. not exactly a chirp issue: i have few uv-5r's one of them can only receive while transmitting the others receive only the bip but not the voice~ what might be the reason besides a defective mic (while checking i found out i cannot manualy change menu 5 from wide to narrow . it remais as programmed - this IS a chirp issue( -- Amnon

[chirp_users] Communication Issues with new UV-5R EX

I just purchased a UV-5R EX off of Amazon and am having trouble getting it to communicate with CHIRP. The same hardware/software config works just fine with my BF-F8HP. I get the problem whether I select Raddiodity/UV-5R EX or Baofeng/UV-5R. This is on linux, and I have the problem with the latest Mercurial commit as well as 20180906 and 20181018. I've also reproduced the problem on Windows, which also communicates just fine with the BF-F8HP just fine. I just unplug the one radio from the mic connection and plug in the other and it starts/stops working, so I'm pretty certain it isn't a driver/permissions/etc issue. This is with an FTDI-based USB cable. The radio reports its firmware version (when holding down 3) as BFS001. I couldn't tell you whether this is correct as it isn't communicating with CHIRP so I'm not getting more than that. I also tried fiddling with the baud settings on the serial device in linux and it didn't make any difference. Has anybody run into issues with newer radios? Is it possible there was a firmware change not handled by the software? I'm happy to debug or test patches/etc if helpful. The radio is just in factory config so I don't really care about losing any settings as long as it isn't bricked. -- Rich

Now I have the MacBook Pro 2018 with USB-C. -I have the Apple supplied FTDI drive & no others. -Only bluetooth shows up in the connect menu -I also am using a new Baofeng. I used to have the UV-5R but now I’m using a BF-F9HP which I understand is supposed to be a UV-5R variant. Do I select UV-5R or BF-F8 in the menu? Can anyone provide a starting point? A few of questions on the above subject when using Chirp:- Can you confirm when setting the ctcss codes for transmit and receive you use the columns 'tone' and 'tonesql' ? I have tried to set these columns to 67.0 but when uploaded to the radio they get set to 118.8. How do I fix this? I am trying to set up my radios to to talk to a friends Motorola T80 using a PMR a channel with a ctcss sub code. The Motorola uses a step of 12.5 on ctcss against an average of 2.5 on the Baofeng. Is there any way to alter the step sequence on the Baofeng? Cheers Calum

Hi all! New member of the list, new user of Chirp and new user of the QYT KT-7900D. Before i received my KT-7900D i read "somewhere" on the internet that a user of this radio had the issue that he can only hear what is happening on the air when he uses the Monitor. Scanning stops whenever there is a signal, but the squelch doesn't open. I thought it had something to do with the radio expecting a receive tone as well to get open the squelch, but i'm not sure what exactly he did to fix this. Was that on this list? I have the same issue. Ton.

I recently acquired a KG-UV8D radio. It has v1.05 firmware. It seems to read the info on the "Settings" tab OK... but changes I make there don't stick. If I edit them, save the file, and then re-open the file, it has reverted to the previous settings. I haven't tested all of those settings, but that is true specifically for the Display Message and ANI code in Key Settings, as well the channel in the VFO x Settings. I have a KG-UV6D radio and I haven't run into this issue with it, so I presume this is specific to CHIRP's support for this particular model. When I first tried this, I was running the 20180614 release, but I installed the latest 20181018 release with same result. Ideas? Dave

Kenwood 372G error using 6/17 driver. Another driver was created earlier this year, 5/18. That driver seemed to work when added as a temporary patch. I don't know if the new driver was completely verified by anyone. I also cannot find where the working one was ever made part of the daily build. Any help would be appreciated

FYI, I use several QYT qyt 7900D radios with chirp and have no issues with them. The scanning should not stop unless there is no tone required, or the correct tone is there, I would double check the sql level programmed and the other parms. This is just a FYI from me. Most radios have a minimum of 6 character display for memory. Here is my naming convention. Digits 1 and 2 are the county. Digits 3 and 4 are the city. Digit 5 is U(hf) or V(hf) Digit 6 is Numeric 1-9 for instances of more multiple repeaters in a city. When you have multiple dozens of repeater channels this quickly helps you see which is which. I just used Chiro for the first time with my Yaesu VX-170. After a few false starts, it took off and read the radio. I did a few tweeeks to the data and had to carefully read the info to get it to write back to the radio. Once all the right button were pressed it wrote my data back to the radio. I'll be sure to use chirp and will not be a novice too much longer. Thanks for a good program guys. Clayton K4QM

Hi Dennis, That's pretty much what I do with the Puxing 888. Simplex and repeaters in two groups, RAYNET frequencies in a third. I did the same with a dual-band Baofung I owned at one time, lots of memories needed, plus more groups for CTCSS tones! I don't like it when other Chirp users ask why anyone wants to do it differently to the way they do it, thus suggesting that their way is the only way to save and retrieve data to and from a radio, and then not answering the question anyway! Its a long time since I did it, but my recollection is that for a CSV file any unused cells should, upon downloading from the radio, appear as just a single terminating comma, probably resulting in many long strings of commas. So new data can be entered in between the commas, but one would have to be sure they were the correct two commas. I'd be tempted to do it in Excel or similar, where the unused cells would appear as blank cells, all ready for the filling-up of by the enthusiastic radio amateur. The Excel data would have to be converted back to a CSV file before uploading to the radio. Hope this is of some use to somebody! If not it doesn't really matter, I wasn't doing anything else... Hello group, I'm having trouble programming my Kenwood TH-D72 Ht. I have a feeling I'm missing something really obvious, so I apologize if this is a stupid question: In Chirp there are options to work with the radio in "Clone Mode" and "Live Mode". Trying to read from the radio in live mode doesn't yield any results. Also, I don't know what I would do to put the radio into clone mode; I can't find anything in the manual about that. What am I missing? System: Windows 10, current version of Chirp. The system has the virtual com port driver from Kenwood installed. Also, I CAN read from the radio using the Kenwood MCP-4A software. I'm trying to use chirp though because I can't import a CSV into the MCP-4A program (the only option is a TravelPlus csv file, and I don't have an example of that format). [chirp_users] FT-450D communication problem

I have just downloaded latest Chirp (CHIRP daily-20180906). Using Windows 10, Com port 3, Vendor Yaesu, Model FT-450D. My CAT cable works fine with "PCC for FT-450D", WSJT-X , "Ham Radio Deluxe" & "FREE450", but not "Chirp"! Followed instructions to download from radio & got message:- An error has occurred - Failed to communicate with radio: Unable to read block 0 expected 6 got 4. Any ideas? My FT-450D has the UK 60m frequencies plumbed into the memories - will these be saved in Chirp? I want to update the radio's firmware, so want to backup the memories including the 60m ones. Thanks

[chirp_users] New to CHIRP and issue with Baofeng

Hi, I am new to CHIRP, and a fairly new HAM as well. I have CHIRP installed, and try to connect to my BAOFENG UV-82. CHIRP will not let me select a COM port. I am using the cable that BAOFENG sells. The cable came with a disk, but it is in Chinese, and when I try to change the setting to English, it says it cannot write to the disk. Starting the BAOFENG software (BF480), it is all in Chinese and with question marks as I don't have Chinese fonts. It probably is a driver issue, but I don't know where to get the right driver. Any help greatly appreciated! Berrie

[chirp_users] Can't program or read Retevis RT-22

Read through the last couple months of archives, didn’t see anything directly related. Using the latest chirp, I cannot program or read from a retevis RT-22. Used to clone them all the time, then we didn’t need any for a while, got a new batch, and all I get when I try to read is an “unknown identification string”, and if I try to download programming from the img file we were using before, I get an error about 5 tries, but haven’t been able to get that to come up again. If I load the RT22 software downloaded from retevis, it fires right up, and can at least read the radio config, I haven’t tried writing it again. I programmed some RT22’s about 2 months ago, and didn’t have any of these issues, so I’m not sure if it’s a retevis firmware change, or what. Debug.log is attached. I found this old bug report from several years ago that I thought might address my issue: https://chirp.danplanet.com/issues/254 I tried changing the baud rate for the COM port I'm using, but it made no difference. I get the same error whether I'm in clone mode or not. Any ideas?

[chirp_users] Decoding BaoFeng 6+Power-On Message ?

Some BaoFeng radios include a "6+Power-On Message" which can be displayed by holding down the 6 key while powering on the radio. These message strings are stored in "6+Power-On Message" lines 1 & 2 as displayed by CHIRP in "Settings" > "Other Settings". Line 1 of the "6+Power-On Message" is apparently included (in parentheses) in the filenames of some of the CHIRP recovery images maintained at Jim's site, here: http://kc9hi.dyndns.org/uv5r/programming/CHIRPrecovery/ For example, "N82-33 US2S35(150602N)(factory).img" includes "(150602N)" in the filename. I believe this image applies to the BaoFeng UV-82HP, and one of these units I own did include "150602N" in line 1 of the "6+Power-On Message". I say "did" because apparently this string is cleared by resetting the radio to factory defaults via MENU > 40 > RESET > ALL. Anyway, these strings look suspiciously like manufacturing date codes. For example, 150602N would decode to 2015-06-02, which is just a few months before the "Last modified" file date of 12-Oct-2015 (as displayed in the CHIRP recovery image listing in the web browser). As far as I can tell, for *all* of the files in the CHIRP recovery images directory which include such a string , that string decodes to a date that is a few days to a few months prior to the "Last modified" date. And in no case does any such string decode to a date that is later than the "Last modified" date. Can anyone confirm that these strings do indeed represent manufacturing date codes? Also, does anyone have a radio that still displays this "6+Power-On Message" after resetting the radio to factory defaults? Thanks... (Peter)

Indeed, so why are we indirectly promoting the use of counterfeit devices then? If the chip is "Genuine", the currently available "Official" driver, /will/ work. Yes, I too have accumulated some dodgy chip driven adapters, just as everyone I suspect has. I am slowly replacing them as I find them, not because they don't work (they work just fine under Linux, for now.) But because they all have the same identity and no serial number, making the use of multiple devices and nailing their feet to the numeric floor with Udev rules, rather troublesome. I prefer FTDI parts, as by default they all have a unique serial number, making Udev rules easy and reliable. SiLabs parts are a close second choice*, with Prolific only if there is absolutely no other alternative. Even the genuine Prolific chips don't seem to have a "unique" identity. (Unless I've not yet seen a "Genuine" chip!) General Linux trick: What I've found is that if you build a Udev table for regularly connected devices, starting from /dev/ttyUSB1 (or higher) then anything else that is randomly connected later, will always show up as ttyUSB0 or 2 etc, as they is still vacant. Problem solved. I installed the 3.2.0.0 into Windows 10 from Miklor web site. All is well. Never had any problem with Windows XP or Windows 7, until I tried it on my Windows 10 laptop. I already have the BTECH FTDI cable, thanks Bryan. And I've never had a problem with the drivers that Windows Update provides for the FTDI chipset on Windows 10. I'm just offering Microsoft's "driver rollback prevention solution" (below) for whomever might want it, for whatever device. It's a way to prevent driver updates for specific devices, as opposed to preventing all updates for all devices, or disabling Windows Update entirely (which is not a good idea). Quiet frankly, better to go to the chipset makers own website and get the correct and likely mallware free ones. Not to say Miklor website is bad, but it's just another third party website with a collection of files, that "could" not be safe. They might also not be the latest copies of the official drivers. I'm sure they (whoever "Miklor" are) take care to keep things clean, but they would not be the first or only site to have their repository of useful stuff compromised. http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_GettingStarted.php States the situation very well. However, they wrongly state that FTDI devices don't have that problem. Sorry, but yes they do, there are just as many fake FTDI chips out there as Prolific! The difference is that the official drivers will usually work with them*. But, if you need to alter their behavior (the handshake or status lines, or "which way up" the data lines work) then you'll find that functionality is missing from the fake chips. * FTDI a while ago did create a storm however, by putting code in the "official" drivers, that could detect the fakes and in turn reprogram the VID/PID info to all zero's rendering them unusable. It is however possible to re-program that information, but it takes some research plus confidence with command line tools on a Linux PC. (As far as I know, the tool for that isn't, or wasn't available for Windows. I can't even remember what it's name is either.) FTDI soon after, then pushed out a driver that did not disable the things, but for all we know, it may report back to FTDI, or somewhere, any instances of fake chips. No, I did not say they DO that, just that they could. If it was my IP that was ripped off, I'd want to know how bad the problem was, and that would be a way to find out. The Fake chips are actually micro-controllers programed to emulate the real devices. That they do amazingly well, but not 100%. I have encountered some that were marked up as FTDI, but were functioning as Prolific devices! The supplier I used had no idea, but did apologize and gave me a full refund on the return of the stock I bought for a work project. I wouldn't trust Amazon either to only ship non-counterfeit cables either! In Amazon's defense, it's often not their fault, and often the actual vendor doesn't know either! (See above...) I usually make up my own cables using known good modules from the makers themselves, or from known reputable resellers. It's not difficult, and you learn stuff too. (Isn't that what we're supposed to be doing?) The SiLabs USB/Serial bridge products are also very good, and as yet(?) Not counterfeited, unless someone knows different. Take care. 73. I have two different Baofeng programming cables. In Windows Device Manager, one shows "Prolific USB to Serial Comm Port", the other shows "USB-Serial CH340." Both work equally well under Windows XP, Windows 7, and Linux Mint with multiple different Baofeng HTs. However, only the "USB-Serial CH340" works with Windows 10. What's the difference? Anyone else having this issue? Any thoughts how to make "Prolific USB to Serial Comm Port" work with Windows 10? I'm really beginning to hate Windows 10. Tnx, Richard AG5M

Howdy. Ive just joined this list but have been using Chirp for around 4 years with various radios. How can I get things moving along with the Zastone D9000 radio ? The manufacturer is not very forthcomming with help. I have the Ver 1.0.0.0 software from them but its really frustrating to use and I have now found a painful bug in the software regards reading and programing the receive only memories. No response from them on that problem either. So it would be great to get this one going with Chirp. I have seen requests off the list about this model previously on chirp some years ago but it may have fallen by the wayside. Tell me what help I can provide to get this moving with Chirp. I am all ears . Thanks in advance Tony
