While programming radio all went well with download of factory setting but radio locked up after upload of local settings. radio lightes up fine with 787.314 upper & 109.747 lower reading. No buttons work except flashlight, volume/on/off & call brings up 65.000 FM?? pulled battery for a few days, nada! Is there a master reset? What to do? Apprecite some help. Thanks Don W1DAS

[chirp_users] can't figure out how to convert a csv file to an image file

Hey gang, I'll be the first one to admit it, I'm not a computer guru. I know how to navigate around here and there but, when it comes to technical stuff, I get lost pretty easy. I'm new to this site and I'm new to Chirp in general. I've asked a question or two so far on here and have been graciously answered. Well, I'm still trying to learn. I have a Yeasu VX-170 and a new Baofeng UV-5R 8 watt unit. I've managed to load a few frequencies onto the Baofeng and it's all good. But, a buddy just bought the same exact radio as mine and, I wanted to program his to the same frequencies, minus a few that wouldn't apply to him anyways. But, here's the deal. All of files I've saved are csv files. From my brief learning period, csv files CANNOT be uploaded to a radio, only IMG files can. Here's the problem. If I want to upload frequencies, they must be from an image file and, I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to convert a csv file to an image file. I'm on about a 6 year old Dell Inspiron running Windows 8.1 on a solid state hard drive. I know, I know, Windows 8.1 is sort of old school but, the reason I have and use it is because, when I had the new SSHD installed, it was at a time when Windows 10 was brand new and many, many folks were not happy with it so, the company that was doing my computer rebuild asked me if I wanted to remain with Windows 8.1. I said, yep, keep it. So, that's the story on that. Now, how to convert a csv file to an image file so I can alter it and, then upload it to a radio. And please, please, I'm very low tech so, if you explain how to do it, do it as if you're talking to a senior citizen which, I am. Scott

I am currently running the newest version on mac v10.14.5 and have downloaded and attempted to use all the drivers mentioned on the CHIRP website and any other blogs I could find discussing the issue. The cable I am using is "BTECH PC03 FTDI Genuine USB Programming Cable for BTECH, BaoFeng, Kenwood, and AnyTone Radio" off amazon. If you go to the Baofang website it redirects you to this cable on amazon. Overall I am just stuck, any help would be greatly appreciated.Thank you for your time and consideration. Cheers! The FT-4 also uses a 3.3v serial connection for programming, but it's 2-wire, meaning the Tx and Rx are both on the same wire, named DATA. I use the NanoPi Duo's serial port pins (Tx and Rx) and GND. The FT-4 presents GND on the 2.5mm MIC sleeve, and DATA on the 2.5mm MIC ring. I connected GND directly to Pi GND,Data directly to Pi RxD, and Pi via a 2K resistor to DATA. CHIRP successfully downloaded and uploaded. So, we have two worked examples of modern HTs directly connecting to the 3.3V serial ports of modern tiny SBCs.

I have now successfully downloaded and uploaded a Baofang UV-5RA using a Raspberry Pi and using a NanoPi Duo, with not USB dongle. The programming cable consists of three wires and the connectors at each end, and nothing else. function radio Pi GND 2.5mm SP sleeve GND Data FROM radio 2.5mm SP ring RxD Data TO radio 3.5mm MIC sleeve TxD Run CHIRP on your RPi, and it just works.

Howdy! Running a Yaesu Ft-70DR that just arrived today. First thing's first: download to Chirp! Running daily 20190221 on Debian current stable, using the builds from the website. Just one problem - it didn't download. After following instructions (battery off, DC and USB in (specifically the USB cable that came with), hold AMS key while powering on, select Download option, set the right options (/dev/ttyACM0, Yaesu FT-70D)), hit the BAND button so it says TX, and... ...no activity. It times out, radio shows ERROR. Long and short, I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong here. So in short: * What am I missing? * What other information is needed from me to properly answer? -Dennis KE7KIF

I just programmed up a UV-5R+ Plus for a friend of mine and that worked out good with the Chirp program but there are some Frequencies that I would like to have Receive only on the radio. I went through the program and I didn't see anything listed to do so. Did I overlook it or does this program not have that feature??? Thank you very much in advance for your response back. Thank you, did that, and used the ppa. Regardless, sudo apt-get remove chirp-daily, but left the Python libraries. Used wget to get today’s daily. Under the Help menu, it displays CHIRP daily-20190321 I have enabled the developer functions. I’ve tail -f /var/log/syslog to find any info. It shows what dmesg output when the cable was inserted. Ubuntu 14 xfce chirpw -v returns version 4.0.0-RELEASE which has a date of 12/21/2013 That’s alarming, so I apt-get update and reinstalled chirp-daily In terminal, it unpacks to 20190319-trusty over the one I installed from last week. Is this the version number? I have searched and tried all the troubleshooting steps I can find online. I’ve made many attempts to get the chirp software to clone my Baofeng UV-82L. This is the latest. I’ve bought a second cable that seemed to be recommended by Miklor. Installed the latest chirp onto Ubuntu xfce. When I connect the cable into USB I see this via dmesg usb 1-2: new full-speed USB deice number 6 using ohci-pci New USB device found, idVendor=la86, idProduct=7523 New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=2, SerialNumber=0 Product: USB2.0-Serial ch341 1-2:1.0: ch341-uart converter detected usb 1-2: ch341-uart converter now attached to ttyUSB0 That suggests to me that the computer recognizes the cable correctly and is assigned to USB0. Please correct me if I’ve made the wrong assesment. After booting the chirpw program I have connected the other plug into the two ports of the radio, turned on the radio, turned the sound up. Set to the upper band. Selecting USB0 Baofeng UV-82L Terminal reports Clone failed: Radio did not respond. I have done every possible way to wrench that plug into the radio to see if it can possibly connect on each attempt to get it to initially clone. Perhaps there’s something wrong with this three-year-old radio? There is no debug.log in my home .chirp directory, just config files. thx, sam

Informatic and Electronic since 2 week all my systems are running under Linux Mint 19.1 , so far , so good. my problem is now the chirp for program the Yaesu FT-991 via Cat ( USB-USB ), under Windows 10 with RMS Software no problem, in the actual chirp version i did not can choose the FT-991 from the dropdown list. is there anybody, who can help me? Jim KC9HI Hi Jim I am using the universal programmer (new_old) and it does not give the startup message nor will it let me edit the frequency range of the radio. It also doesn't report the firmware version. All I have is from pushing the 3 button when turning it on which doesn't really report the proper number anymore from what I have read. I just got a Baofeng UV-5R from Amazon. It shows Firmware Version BFB298 I’m using the FTDI cable for my Wouxun KG-UV3D to program it. The Baofeng OEM software Reads and writes fine to the radio with this cable. It does the same thing that it used to, but it uses a more modern interface. Also, the uninstaller now removes old chirp config files. There isn't really any need to do this, but some users would get their config in a weird state and were confused about why uninstalling/re-installing wouldn't clear that up. Anyway, if someone running windows could give this a shot and quickly report back that it indeed looks different and that everything looks good, I'd appreciate it. I tried to copy an off field from another power field and paste it into the problem field, but it did not work. What is the procedure for changing values like this? David, You have helped me before when I needed it and was just learning to download Chirp and, save it etc. And, to download and/or "clone" my old (sent back) Baofeng UV-5R . I have a list of frequencies in a Chirp file and, would like to upload them to a brand new UV-5R 8 watt radio I just received. May I ask a favor? How does one go about sending that list of frequencies to the new radio? If I did this (any of it) more often, or at least ONCE, I'd be ok but, this is all new. Scott

Does anyone know whether Dan is working on a new version of Python to run CHIRP on Macs? I just got the warming about the current version not working when the next release of macOS comes out. I see some 64-bit versions of Python from Apple installed on my Mac, but the installation instructions for CHIRP specifically say to use Dan's Python, which is only 32 bits. Patty N6BIS

Greetings, First time Chirp user here.. was looking to program local repeaters into my BF-F8HP and made it all the way to the Repeaterbook Query. After exceuting the query I get an "Unknown file format" error. I tried to research this under the issues and found it is an new issue with Repeaterbook changing to cloudfare. It looked like there may be some suggested work arounds, but they were way over my head. Is there something I can do to fix, or is this an issue to get fixed/patched in the future? List members, Let us refocus back into reality and remember why this is happening instead of whining like a bunch of kindergartners (or millennials). First, it is instructive that the official annunciation of the forthcoming deprecation of Python 2 (2.7) in 2020 came on 03 NOV 2008, as instantiated by the link provided as follows hereupon. Moreover, this was an EXTENSION of the previously expected deprecation target of 2015. https://legacy.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0373/ The foregoing notwithstanding, large swaths of developers have either chosen a strategy of ignoring this issue at the peril of themselves and ostensibly the users of their code, or intend to substantiate one of the following alternatives: a) Pay someone to maintain Python 2 for them (it is open source) b) Download and self maintain Python 2 (again it is open source code) c) Do nothing and hope nothing breaks Of course the wisdom of moving to Python 3 is the solution which is expected by the developers of Python and the impeller for Apple Corp to no longer make Python 2 a part of their operating system's default software amalgam. Apple is merely dropping support for Python 2 because the developers of Python are dropping support for Python 2. However, we are wise to again remember that the annunciation of a dropping of support for Python 2 by the Python project was made long, long, ago and should have surely been the cause of migration to Python 3 by developers using Python 2, but alas, that has not occurred in many cases (not just in the instant case of Chirp). Whilst I have great respect for Dan and appreciate and think very highly of Chirp and its capabilities, a development plan for migrating it to Python 3 (in my opinion granted, which you are welcome to ignore or discount) should have occurred many, many, many moons ago. For now, my suggested solution is to install VirtualBox on macOS (VirtualBox is free in cost and is open source, hence also free as in freedom) and install a distribution of Linux that is inclusive of Python 2.7 there within. You could choose to not update Python 2.7 (or uninstall it), and use Chirp in such an environment indefinitely. This solution has no monetary cost and would allow those interested parties to persistently use Chirp on a Macintosh via this virtualized environment. Moreover, I own a Macbook Pro that has VirtualBox already installed thereupon and will likely test this myself in the near future (I am thinking a CentOS minimum install with Python 2.7 and its requisite moving parts to make the current Chirp variant work). [chirp_users] Leixen programming banks

Having seen a few post about the 898, i have downloaded the latest version just. i have a 898s. reading the radio, the memory orders are still wrong and each entry is duplicated. and there is no bank one or bank 2 either. early last year i had a py module to load first, this does give me the banks but its bit unreliable. one issue there is when i save the read data to chirp img, when i reopen it, its for a diferent radio header. any update on this pls.

Hello - please help, I try to use CHIRP to program a new Baofeng BF-F8HP and I receive this warning: "This radio's driver is experimental. Do you want to proceed?" "Due to the fact that the manufacturer continues to release new versions of the firmware with obscure and hard-to-track changes, this driver may not work with your device. Thus far and to the best knowledge of the author, no UV-5R radios have been harmed by using CHIRP. However, proceed at your own risk!"
