Is the group aware of a bug with ver. 251 where the VFO when locked to VFO A, will sometime switch to VFO B on its own. Has Anyone experienced this? [chirp_users] Need help with Chirp (Linux) and a VX-8GR

Good afternoon, all, I recently bought a VX-8GR and have been trying to program it with Chirp (which I've found works flawlessly with my Wouxun handheld). I'm using the latest daily build on Lubuntu, with an RT Systems USB cable connected to the data jack. I pressed F/W while turning the radio on, was in clone mode, and pressed band to begin the transfer -- all after beginning the download on Chrip. After an initial few tries didn't work (the error message was: Failed to communicate with radio: no response from radio) using the keystroke sequence I found in past messages on this group, I consulted Dr. Google and came up with the following: For the RT Systems cable, add the following line to etc/udev/rules.d/99-custom.rules: SYSFS{idVendor}=="2100", SYSFS{idProduct}=="9e50", RUN+="/sbin/modprobe -q ftdi_sio vendor=0x2100 product=0x9e50" I did so, rebooted, tried again to communicate with the radio, but got the same error message. The battery has a full charge. Any hints? I can't rule out the loose-nut-behind-the-wheel syndrome. ;-) With best regards, Pete -- Peter N. [chirp_users] need some info re th-f6a

hi folks: i looked through the chirp site before posting this, but didn't find much specific. i see there was an issue/bug opened for the th-f6a reporting as a th-f6 and my daily build of chirp (i might be a couple of 'days' behind) reports as such, but the bug appears to have been resolved about 8-12 months ago. it was Bug #19: TH-F6A support not working in recent builds. it appears everything else (with the below exceptions) seems to work as expected, but i don't have any comparison to bump against. anyway, the first thing i did since this radio works with chirp completely unlike any of my other radios in a sort of 'real time' mode (it almost seems like virtual control is already 95% working and i was surprised that it wasn't implemented nor was a menu config function) was to read the radio and export out to csv. but i don't understand what the last 3 columns are: | URCALL |, | RPT1CALL | and | RPT2CALL |. granted, it's a new radio and my first kenwood in many years, but i've been through the manual pretty thoroughly twice now and did a google search as well and can't come up with any info on these columns. it could always be some function(s) that i would never use and i glossed over them. also, on a more serious note, when i tried to import some info from one of my other radios (after formatting it for the f6a), chirp refused to process the lines that had mode as 'FMN'. at first i was surprised as i had (ass)umed that the kenwood would do narrow fm, and in fact it does support nfm, but not at the same time as regular fm--a disappointing fact but at least the mode is there to activate. i think this would be an easy fix in that i could just change all instances of NFM to FM in my csv file, but i was curious as to why chirp would not recognize this mode from this radio? thanks! /guy (73 de kg5vt)

Hi Does anyone know how to wire a cable for connecting and downloading for this rig. I believe maybe a serial connector from PC to a modular connector maybe all that is needed but I could be wrong, and don't want to chance damaging the rig. Marty kd8bj

Look at http://www.wouxun.com. Click on the KG-UV6D on the left bar. [chirp_users] Using Chirp to program Wouxun KG-UV6Dv2 on a Mac - cable issues?

Hi guys, I am a brand-new ham & bought the KG-UV6Dv2 from Wouxun.us along with their cable. I run Parallels 8 and can see I could probably program it their, but I'd rather do it on the Mac (Mountain Lion 8.2). I've installed the driver package from RT Systems, and also the other more generic driver from Sourceforge (also supposed to be good on the Mac). Chirp runs fine, Python is installed, but it can't see my radio - it tries to read it and then reports an error (can't remember the exact error title, but it's to the effect of "can't find device"). Mac System Reports sees various serial devices, and it looks like the cable is a Prolific chipset. I think I could connect if I could figure out how to control COM ports/Serial Ports on the mac, or is it hopeless w/the Prolific cable? Thanks, Cam

While looking at the bottom of the Chirp wiki, I saw that itmentions RadioReference as an internet-available source of information, however while skipping through the rather limited doc, I found no mention ofhow this is done. Has anyone figured out how to use it? Does it simply use the .csv filesthat you can get via the premium subscription, use the SOAP based web service, or is it something else? I suspect it would be quite popular with the RadioReference crowd - we have a lot of hams there - if this were well-documented I could write up some documentation on the subject, if I knew whereto start...TIA...Mike

Hi, I'm new to Chirp, and enthusiastic about the possibilities, but if it can't write to my radio, my enthusiasm will wane quickly. There has to be too many of these out there for it not to be a problem with my setup, but I'm not sure where to start. Setup: New MacBook running OSX 10.8.2. Chirp is 0.2.3. Cable is from eBay, using a PL2303 chip, driver obtained from your pointer, I think. Fairly new Yaesu FT-60, 12 memories used. Trying to load another 100 for the local standardized CERT list, massaged from a spreadsheet into a .csv format that Chirp finally seems happy with, and which looks sane in the Chirp display. I am able to read the FT60 into Chirp just fine, and repeatedly, no errors. What I see in Chirp is pretty much what I expected to see. After massaging, I tried to write it back. I think I've got the dance right: Put the FT60 in clone Rx mode and then hit the OK button in Chirp's Upload popup. [ Just for grins I tried it in the "wrong" order, that doesn't work either. ] Nothing happens. The FT60 stays in Rx mode as though nobody has tried comm with it. No progress bar as with a radio/radio clone, and no error display. Just waiting in Rx, forever. The Upload popup in Chirp disappears, there looks to be a flash of a small popup too fast to read, and nada. The radio, after power off/on, still has the original 12 memories programmed, but nothing else. No error messages I can see. I tried a different FT60, same result. Reseated the cable several times. The cable is plausibly suspect (I don't have another), but I don't think it can read and not write, it needs both data directions for either, doesn't it? I can't find any debug information within Chirp or the Mac console logs, but maybe I don't know where to look. The "raw data" in the developer tools just looked like a very short data structure, nothing that looked meaningful to me. Please advise how I can go about troubleshooting this, or what I might be doing wrong. Thanks and regards, -dan

There's nothing there for RadioReference - Repeaterbook and RFinder are there, however. Does it check to see whether you have a subscription? I asked some on the list to clarify which chips were best and where to get them: I received this which helped me. FTDI Chips are the way to go. Valley Enterprises currently seems to be the best source for ready made cables for radios. I bookmarked Valley Enterprises - they have some nice stuff. 73 DR

I am new to this list, so please forgive me for asking the obvious question. I have checked the FAQ and did not find my answer. I recently purchased two Baofeng UV-5R, firmware BFB291. I am unable to program these radio with Chirp software. Any idea when update for Chirp will handle this new firmware? I tried using factory software and getting communication errors. Hi all I have been trying to get the latest version loaded. What is the latest version? I have followed Tom Hayward's instructions to have ppa added but I am still on version 0.1.12. I used Synaptic Manager to remove it and then reinstalled it and added the three app-get instructions to add the ppa. Is there more I need to do. Marty kd8bj

New on the list..and not sure where the archives are. So, just asking the question. I have downloaded and installed CHIRP daily-20120919 and the descriptions for the columns doesn't appear to be up to date in the CHIRP guide. For example, there are more columns that are not shown in the guide, ie URCALL (assume my callsign) and RPT1CALL and RPT2CALL (what are these?) and digital code. What appears to be missing is the power level setting, that is shown in the guide yet is missing in the program. Is there a better place to be looking for this information? The Yaesu FT-1500M is not covered by bob freeth g4hfq in his FT models...a recent e-mail indicates that this is not forthcoming either. Hi I am a new member to the Chirp user group and have a question. I have downloaded Chirp to Xubuntu 12.04 using Synaptic Package Manager and set it up to try to work with the VX5R. I get an error message after trying to connect. The connection is via a USB to serial adapter which has worked before with the rig. The software is configured to use ttyUSB0 which is correct, I see that /dev/ttyUSB0 has permissions of: crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 188, 0 Sep 23 17:22 /dev/ttyUSB0 So I put myself in the dialout group as such: dialout:x:20:marty and have rebooted the machine a couple of times since that time. First is the entry in group correct, my login id is marty? Second has anyone else had this problem with VX5R rigs. The version of Chirp I am using is 0.1.12, I just loaded it yesterday sometime. On another not, I have a system running Win XP and loaded Chirp on it too and am getting much the same response. Only on that system I was connecting via serial port. I was able to connect and download and modify using Vx5 Commander and EVE, not very well mind you but it did work. Any ideas. Marty kd8bj

Hi, I'm new to Chirp and I'm trying to get the Macintosh talking to the ID-880H. I suspect my problems are my old Belkin USB-serial adapter. I have some specific questions - and for clarity my OS is 10.8.1 Can you use the Icom OPC-1529R cable with Chirp and a USB-serial adapter? If not which cable do I use - is it the Icom OPC-478UC and if so does this work without any drivers on the Mac OS? I'm not after cheap eBay cables - just reliable connectivity. If I can use the OPC-1529R then does anyone have a USB-serial adapter which they are using on Mac OS 10.8.x with that cable which works well? If so which one? I'm keen to get this working with the Mac - thanks to Dan and the team for the software. I don't need the "cheapest" solution here, I just need one that is reliable and known to work. I do not want to use a Windows emulator. Just with respect to a current discussion on the list about Mac where it was suggested it is a "boutique platform" - I'm not sure that you can say that about the biggest selling laptop platform in the US for the last quarter ;) Regards Mike VK3ZMH

Mac OS X 10.8.1 driver to program Wouxun KG-UV3D using Chirp I am trying to program a Wouxun UV3D HT using Chirp software and my iMac, running on Mountain Lion (10.8.1). I've found a driver that loads fine on the iMac and is recognized by Chirp (/dev/cu.usbserial). This is the driver - md_PL2303_MacOSX10.6_dmg_v1.4.0. The problem is that when I attempt to download the Wouxun I get an error that a radio is not "responding." I'm using Wouxun's USB to radio cable. What am I missing? Is there a secret Wouxun cloning mode? Any help would be greatly appreciated. 73, David KF4VCA

I think the way to remove kexts is as follows: In terminal navigate to /System/Library/Extensions/ Issue: sudo kextunload nameofkext.kext Issue: sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/nameofkext.kext You'll be asked for an admin password when you use sudo. If you want you can reboot - it shouldn't be necessary. [chirp_users] Can't load Chirp Daily in W7 Pro 32bit

When I try to run Chirp Daily Build (I've tried a few different builds) the Windows 7 spinning circle spins for a few seconds then vanishes. There's no indication in Task Manager of the program running or trying to start. I've tried uninistalling, running a registry clean, reinstalling, running in XP mode, running as administrator, tried different builds, tried with my AV program disabled, all with the same result. It runs fine on my XP netbook, but not on my desktop running Windows 7 Pro 32 bit. Help please. Ken G

OK I've tried both the OPC-1529R with the Belkin adaptor and the OPC478UC - the USB cable with absolutely no luck. Both these cables are recommended by ICOM for the ID-880H, but ICOM only supply drivers for Windows. I downloaded the Prolific driver which they say works with Mac OS 10.8 ...and I can't get it to load. I then downloaded the Netherlands driver (osx-pl2303.kext) and I've got it loaded and a serial port available. However when I choose "Download from Radio" Chirp simply says "Cloning" very briefly and then "An error has occurred. Unexpected response from radio" Important to note that the serial port does not show up in Network Prefs but when I issue kextstat I get this back: 131 0 0xffffff7f81eb6000 0xb000 0xb000 nl.bjaelectronics.driver.PL2303 (1.0.0d1) <122 33 5 4 3> So it's loaded. I remember back in the days of IBM PCs... "IBM" had clearly won the sales war at that point in terms of their hardware architecture (and OS such as it was then)... but Apple sold more personal computers than IBM did. IBM set the standard... but didn't profit from it! I don't keep track of this stuff on an ongoing basis, but I suspect Apple has been competitive with any given PC brand pretty much continuously. They certainly have a long history of being 'on top' of the customer satisfaction/reliability/etc surveys. Which isn't to say that I'm an Apple owner. Don't even own an iP* . Last Apple I owned was an Apple IIc! There are other considerations... and for me and my world... I don't really have a practical choice but stick in the Microsoft camp. Still, I can't blame Apple owners for loving their toys! Dave

Mitch, That's an unusual "opportunity". I've used the cheaper cables from eBay on different radio's with CHIRP and had no problems, HOWEVER: When I program my UV-5R, none of them work at all, except a DB9 cable that came with my Kenwood TK-3170 commercial radio. Nothing special here. WinXP Pro, SP3 etc. on my $100 swap meet cheapie Dell laptop. I use the laptop for Field Day, programming radio's and 'dats it. I am successfully using Chirp on a MacBook Pro to program Baofeng UV-5R and Wouxun KG-UVA1 radios. I am using the latest daily builds, currently CHIRP daily-20120912. I am using an unknown cheap EBay programming cable. The only quirk I have found is that the software will only read from or write to the radios one time. You then have to unplug the cable, plug it back in, and it will work again for another time, a trivial inconvenience. I do not have this problem using the same cable, same build, on a netbook running Windows 7. The Chirp software is great and I especially like the ability to query frequency data bases for area repeaters, as I travel quite a bit. Mitch, W4OA

[chirp_users] OT-ish: USB-only programming cables for VX-7R

There are various programming cables for the Yaesu VX-7R on Ebay that consist of a USB plug on one end and a VX-7R mic plug on the other. I'd like to get one of those because the combination of three cables I'm using now is rather bulky. Does anyone here know for sure if those cables of which I speak present themselves as a USB-to-RS232 converter? -- David Griffith dave(a)661.org
