[chirp_users] Success Communication with UV5R BFB 291

Thanks to Jock, George, Dan, Alan and all who responded to my call for help. I was already aware that the .img file had to be downloaded from the individual UV5R radio which would then be the template used to program the channels and upload back to the radio as I had spent many hours reading every post and article that I could find on both <blocked::http://www.miklor.com/> www.miklor.com and <blocked::http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Home> http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Home sites. I visited the <blocked::http://www.miklor.com/> www.miklor.com site and obtained a copy of the program for the 291 model. However on running this I suffered the same problem. I noticed that the program was trying to communicate on COM Port 8. But the UV5R was shown to be connected to COM Port10. I could not find any method of changing the program from COM8. I disabled the four Bluetooth Communications Ports shown as COM3, COM6, COM7, and COM8 and reran the program. Eureka this time I had communication. I fired up the CHIRP program which also connected to the radio. So if it is of any use to others who think their radio is not communicating with either the CHIRP program or the Baofeng program try temporarily disabling any other device that is shown using COM Ports. I still find it strange that the Prolific USB-to Serial cable is shown connected to COM10. and CHIRP shows that it is communicating using COM4. Purely academic, as the respective programs work and I am able to program my BFB 291 model. Mike

CHIRP remembers the last com port it used. It doesn't check to see if you changed USB slots. CHIRP is good for the radios they compliment. I use RT Systems VX-2 software and cable. Yes pricey, not freeware, but works seemlessly with ARRL and Rfinder. I use CHIRP for UV-5R and like it fine. However,I want to use it for my mobile and I got an error "Global name "data undefined". I got a copy of the Icom sw and it will not connect either. hi folks: after filling out login form and zipcode, receive the following error: Suds library required for RadioReference.com import. > Try installing your distribution's python-suds package. i checked with some of the bug pages and found one user who provided approx 10-12 steps to fix this. unsure if his workaround is the accepted way to do it though. just wondering if someone can point me to an 'approved' way to install this library. also, i also noticed today that installing the kk7ds runtime left the /opt directory hanging out in the breeze in that it is not hidden like the rest of the / folders. i did a 'sudo chflags hidden /opt' to hide it, but i'm unsure of the ramifications of doing that. thanks, /guy (73 de kg5vt | wqpz784)

[chirp_users] Copy Paste Function

Am I wrong or is there a copy & paste function? Also, when I downloaded my original load to the chirp software the PL tones that I used in the other software transferred over fine, but when I add frequencies using the chirp software for my UV5RC, I input the PL tones, but after I hit OK, they go back to the default. I am a bit confused. I think I have set all my channels to send a PL tone and to squelch unless the same tone is received. Some radios call these CT and RT. My CHIRP settings are: Tone Mode is Tone for all (except a couple of simplex channels), Tone and Tone SQL are set, Cross Mode is Tone->Tone I need a bit of doc for these fields. Here are some of my guesses: Tone Mode: Tone means CT+RT, None means neither, TSQL means RT, DTCS means digital squelch(?), Cross means ???? Tone is CT frequency, ToneSQL is RT frequency. Cross Mode is ????? Is this all written down somewhere in the Wiki??? Finally figured it out...the USB plus for the programming cable is "iffy", and must be pulled out slightly to make reliable contact. Now I'm good to go. I ordered a new UV-5R and it came with a USB cable included from Ebay.? Loaded the Windows XP driver 2025, under device manager it says it's working properly.? However, it will not read the radio.? Hello Gang. I have a question. When I put split frequencies into chirp for public safety frequencies and send it to my radio it seems to upload fine. But when I download from radio back to chirp at a later time the duplex and offsets change to + or - in that column and offset changes also. the duplex and offset change automatically. Folks, I moved from Tampa, FL to Kalama, WA, Chirp has made setting up my radios a WHOLE lot easier. I have sort of sat and watched all the goings on. With the move I had to load a whole lot of new frequencies into the radios, Chirp really took care of that issue. Now I have a question, perhaps this will generate rocks and rotten fruit tossed my way, but I have been playing with a Samsung S2 Tablet 10.1. I got the USB interface dongle, and plugged a USB serial port in it, did a: ls /dev |grep ttyUSB0 and sure enough there it was, I plugged a second one into a USB 4 port device and saw ttyUSB01 appear, so the device recognizes and loads the proper drivers. Now I will fire up screen and try to talk to my old Kenwood TM-D700 sending it some manual com- mands to see if I get a reply, on my Linux boxes it talks like a parrot, so it should be a easy test. The question is has anyone tried to port Chirp to Android? These nice big tablets sure make nice screens for the vehicle and the cheaper ones do not cost that much. Of course the next step is a screen for direct entry of the front panel and a real nice proper presentation of a control panel on a touch screen. I am not a programmer, but I can test code, now that I no longer am doing field service (I am fixed here in the glass container plant in Kalama, WA) I have a bit more time to test out code. So if anyone wants to try it, I am willing to do testing, I have the old Kenwood and I also have a Icom 92AD. It was the 92AD that brought me to Chirp. And here I am quite happy with it. Keep up the good work folks.

I reset my Yaesu 857D to factory specs and tried to reload the the memories from a saved backup.but do not see the send-receive buttons that I used to see when uploading or downloading memories. Running CHIRP daily-20121012 Upon upload of memories, many memories (but not all) have the IPO and ATT conditions set even on broadcast FM band, aircraft band, 144 & 450MHz. >From the front panel, neither of these bits are allowed on 144 or 450MHz. Since the IPO button is disabled above 6m, the IPO cannot be turned off, so presumably the ATT is also set as it is for 6m and below. "My problem with version 251 is it will not hold VFOs and bounce back and forth even when radio is in the lock mode. You may TX one minute on VFO A and next time TX on VFO B, wrong freq." This is easy. The "Dual Watch" function is doing that. The radio switches automatically to whichever line, A or B, has radio traffic, or even just noise that breaks squelch. It drive me nuts at first, too. You need to turn this function off. Set Menu 7 to Off, like this. Press Menu, then 7. Press Menu, then 0. Press Menu (the radio says "Confirm") Press Exit. Or, if you want to do this with CHIRP: Below where it says Memories on the left side, click Settings, Advanced Settings, uncheck Dual Watch, then upload back to the radio. John- Thank you for the update on the firmware, (MCU OTP(Microcontroller Unit, One Time Program only) . This explains the issue now well. I guess we cannot do anything about this. We need to be able to upgrade the Ver. 251 that is very buggy to Version 291. I'm uncertain if this group will be able to do this, or not. I was just seeking clarification, from the group. I am seeking this ability to flash the firmware to 291 through other sources if possible too. I have too many friends with the old version of 251 that need to upgrade. Thanks 73's Ed Ed, there are reasons that a manufacturer may have a Firmware change... and it may be due to a change in the hardware. Firmware is tailored to the radio (or other device) for good reason. It is not something that you should or need to "upgrade" on a regular basis or without very good reason. I have had no "buggy" operation from the Ver. 231 or Ver. 251 radios I have been working with here. In fact, I thought it was Ver. 291 that CHIRP was having problems with. That said I just want to make sure I download the most current version, what is the current version of chirps also I saw what a peered to be a downloadable firm ware for the radio. What is that for? I've been playing around with the RadioReference (RR) import, and wondering if there's any plans afoot to expand the function beyond just getting frequencies from a certain zip code. That seems very limited, and RR has much more than that available. For example, the site, over the last year or so, has started accepting ham radio repeater frequencies, and it has a rather large nationwide listing. In addition, there are many organizations and categories available at the state level. Many scanner software packages have this functionality, and I suspect that hams that are members of RR would appreciate having it. As I understand it, having worked a little with some software authors (including the author of FreeScan for the Uniden DMA scanners, who is himself a ham) there's a fair amount of flexibility in being able to select or de-select certain categories of frequencies (for example, here in Maryland, the State Police have an extensive 39 Mhz listing, but few if any ham radios receive there. These could be blocked.) Since I can't send HTML here, I will say that there's a brief wiki page on the SOAP protocol on RR, and we have how FreeScan defined the conventional import using the web service - lots of pix there. But none of these elements seems to work as a port address in Chirp. Greetings: Brand new to CHIRP and have just cloned my FT-857 (in Windows, running Parallels on a Mac). I'd really like to figure out how to run it natively in OS X and have installed the Python package and the latest CHIRP build, but can't get CHIRP to see any ports other than a couple of Bluetooth entries in the ports list. I'm also fairly new to Macs, so am not sure how to manually address the port from within CHIRP. Can anyone point me to useful startup documentation for Mac users (assuming my radio interface cable is good, since it works well for me on the Windows side)? Thanks Matt

I need to import profile from ver.291 to 251, is there a way? I noticed that Chirp will not read VIP profiles. I am using Chirp for ver 251 and VIP for version 291, but I cannot share profiles to make all radios identical. Also, is anyone working an option to upgrade 251 version firmware to 291? It's probably quite obvious, but maybe not - I've reactivated my RadioReference subscription, and the transaction went smoothly. I can sign onto the web service using FreeScan (popular freeware software for the Uniden DMA Scanners), but Chirp just dies when I try. I open a new template using 'NEW', then Click 'Radio', 'Query Data Source', then 'RadioReference.com'. I then fill in the signin screen, put in my user name, password and zip code, then hit 'OK' - and that's where it dies. No screens, no message, nothing. I'd like to put a blurb on the wiki on how to sign in, but so far, it's a no-go... What am I missing? I'm using the Sept 19 build. TIA...Mike
