Troubles with Chirp to an IC-92AD

Hi, I'm having troubles getting the program (latest nightly, latest from github, and an older packaged version in Linux Mint 22) to talk to an IC-92AD radio. Seems to launch, and the radio responds to the wakeup attempt, but then just complains about skipping unexpected frames and eventually failing by says there's "No response from radio". Two questions: 1) Is the IC-92AD currently known to be problematic? (I note that bug #10645 is open, but no activity for 2 years) 2) Is the serial protocol to the 92AD documented anywhere? Interestingly once this happens, any future attempt to talk to the radio just does the "No response from radio" without mentioning unexpected frames. Until I power cycle the radio, then it goes back to the initial behaviour.

Punishing the end user for either seems unfair. Canon tried pulling trick #2 with their LiDE scanners, and VueScan showed that this was just a money grab by Canon (to sell entire new scanners users didn't need), and it provides its own scanner driver that is perfectly happy running those old scanners on new Windows versions. Microsoft just takes whatever drivers a hardware manufacturer pro- vides and bundles them into the monthly update. This has led to many problems in the past and will continue into the future, as they can just say "Go talk to the company that wrote the driver - you didn't by Windows directly from us, so you don't get any support from us". Besides, they're busy enough fixing their own bugs that break systems when updated. I also find it amusing that people are holding FTDI up as some ex- ample of a great company that doesn't do this - I guess the fact that FTDI intentionally bricked fake FTDI chips instead of just refusing to support them has faded from memory. Will CHIRP add more AR-5RM settings?

I'm trying out a few AR-5RM, intending to replace our fleet of aging UV-5R/GT-3TP rigs on the ranch. I like what I see so far in the AR-5RM. I downloaded from the HT using model UV-17Pro, loaded my freqs, then uploaded using model 5RM. For the DL, Grok advised me to use model UV-17Pro. But I see that the UV-5R has much more tuneability in CHIRP, while the 5RM has far fewer settings to mod. I wonder if that's just due to the 5RM being more recent by far than the UV. Or is simply that the 5RM has less settings itself. But then, CHIRP added settings such as Squelch level support to the UV, only available thru CHIRP. Retevis H-777H Query

Hi all, I'm currently trying to program a Retevis H-777H walkie talkie from a .img file that has been provided to me. I cannot upload it to the radio as the correct port is selected, but the model selector is greyed out. I cannot copy the module over as when I read from the radio the frequency is an immutable category. I purchased this radio to officiate american football games so I need to be able to operate around the 449 Mhz frequency. Please tell me if I can get this to work with the radios I have already purchased or recommend a different model that would be suitable. Thanks for the help, Jamie

Hello, In March I was able to program my vx-3r with Chirp but today when I wnt and edited my vx-3r and tried to upload the changes, I get the message that the "radio did not ack block 1" Neither does it want to read from my radio. It uploads my vx-5r fine, but here too it will not download from either of my two radios (vx-3r, vx-5r) Thanks, Ric, WD7U

Hello, I'm trying to find a way to program the Radtel RT-12 with Chirp. The compatibility list says that the Radtel RT-10 can be programmed as a Retevis RT22, so maybe there a similar solution for Radtel RT-12 as well. I have not found a solution for this. /Gunnar

Baofeng 5RH PRO radio

Hi there, I have this model radio and wish to program it. Unfortunately as an Apple Mac user I cannot run the manufacturers software written for MS Windows. I am hoping that CHIRP can be my answer but this model radio does not appear to, as yet be compliant. Would you please add Baofeng 5RH PRO to CHIRP? Can you give a rough idea when this might happen? CHIRP works well with my Baofeng UV 5R - thank you. Good wishes, Chris

Chirp with Yaesu radios

I have an FT817ND and an FTM7250DR, both of which are listed as supported radios. However, I have seen a number of posts on the internet from Yaesu stating that using Chirp with Yaesu radios may damage them. On the 7250, Chirp uses the clone mode of the radio which, to my mind, is a very safe way to go. I am not sure how it works with the 817. I would like to use Chirp with both but I am, of course, worried by the Yaesu statements. Are these statements still valid? Or have they been invalidated by progress within Chirp? Or were they not valid in the first instance but a reflection of some other issue? Thanks for any information on this. Howard, VK4BS

If you download the programming software from TIDRADIO, the "5RH Pro programming software.zip" file contains a file named "1.------READ IT FIRST------.txt" which says (as its only contents): "Note：If the software is installed on drive C, please run it as an administrator. !!! Please close the anti-virus program first to avoid the program being deleted. Please don't worry. The program is safe." It has been infested with various viruses/malware since at least the 1.0.56 release, with different payloads all the way up to the current 2.0.9 release. Both the firmware updating software and the CPS obfuscate what they're doing in order to hide their true purpose. As this has been going on since these radios first went on sale (I have serial #111), Baofeng is either oblivious to the fact that they're shipping malware, or an active participant. This is the only analog Baofeng that I've seen this issue on (although I certainly haven't tried every model). The usual Baofeng CPS is rather poorly written, uses a pirated copy of a discontinued library from a company that went out of business, and suffers from a bunch of annoyances (crashing on radio read or write, not allowing the entry of air band frequencies, etc.) but nothing that I would categorize as intentionally bad.

OTOH, the 5RH and 5RM model designations have been re-used many times for completely different models. If your 5RM has a full-color screen, it is one of the newer ones. Try the UV-17 or UV-17 Pro and see if either of those will talk to it. The problem is that many Baofeng models use the same "wake up" com- mand and display the "Program" icon on their screens but time out be- cause the "code word" doesn't match what the radio expects. So the radio times out, the user thinks there is a cable / driver / CHIRP issue when in fact it's the wrong code word.
