Hello, In uploading the chirp settings to my baofeng uv5ra, it appears that all settings are saving to to the radio correctly - except for the offset settings which just read 0.000. The frequencies are for 70 cm fm receivers in my area, so all the values in the chirp file are 5 MHz. Apologies if this question is better directed to a baofeng support forum, but I suspected some folks on this mailing list were likely to have encountered this question before. hi tom thank you for your reply. i did the download from the radio. yes i saw in manual how to set it to mic pc. two questions have not been answered. when going to file and clicking on new chirp comes up in dstar programming mode and my device manager tells me usb to serial connector com port 4 or 5 depending on which usb port i plug int on my computer. how do i get out of the dstar programming mode. hello group i just purchased a thf6a hand held. i was told that the wouxum usb programming cable would work with the thf6a. when i go to device manager in my windows xp machine it tells me the usb com port is usb to serial port connector com 4/5 depending which usb port i use. also i am trying t use chirp to program my thf6a. when i select new file it comes up with the dstar programming winedow. how do i change from dstar to regular programming mode. how do i tell it to use my wouxum usb programming cable. did i pay $16 buks for nothing. thank you. It is the firmware version, not the case style, that can determine which is newer. First of all a big thanks to the CHirp team, it's a great product. I have used it on Yaesu, Baufeng, Wouxun. I use a 6 in 1 cable I bought fo $10 on fle-bay which works well. I made an adapter cable for the FT-817 Accessory socket and downloaded the radio to Chirp just fine. I edited the file and when I tried to send it back to the radio I accidentally factory defaulted the radio by not holding down both mode buttons properly on turn on. A caution for other players. I now cannot communicate with the radio and it has lost all memories and settings. Yes I have the correct Windows driver as it works with other radios. Yes I have the correct com port, verified with "find my port" program a BIG help. Yes I have tried both CAT rates. Yes I have checked for continuity in my patch cable, and no shorts. What have I missed? I can't upload or down load the radio. I get error message Radio did not ack block 0 and Unable to read block 00 expected 4 got 4 Are you guys aware of the availability of NiZn 1.6 V rechargeable AA batteries? Ideal for the FT-817. Like Mike I searched in vain for the process of loading repeaters into my new UV-5RC and then I found the Beginners Guide. Downloading from the radio gave me 21 memories. I have yet to find a means to enter more sites. I expect that I will feel like committing hari cari or the Chinese equivalent when I find the process but it is hidden to me at this moment. I have created and distributed software both commercially (from a big company) and personally (and free) from my web site. I know it is a "labor of love" but that means that is is truly "labor"! Thanks to the authors of this package for supporting so many radios so well. I know there are still some issues and there will almost always be such as features are added/modified. Please be nice to them when you find a bug or are asking for an enhancement. Thank goodness my users are generally nice and it is appreciated. The software, like the radio (UV-5R), is a little complex and a "techy's delight" but, due to the documentation being available, did not take too very long to learn both and get them working happily together. Now, after the praise, one little gotcha that affected me. I did not understand about the .img file needing to be created and was lost for a while, after creating my memories, on how to upload the data to the radio. The menu item was disabled and I could not find any "startup" doc to tell me to get the image from the radio, modify it and upload it back. I think I finally found some wording similar to that but it was not obvious and when first starting to use a new radio and new software, being obvious about first steps is a good thing. [chirp_users] Problems reading Yaesu FT-8900

I am getting an error "Failed to read header (0)" when trying to use CHIRP to read my FT-8900. I am using a USB cable acquired from www.409shop.com and a Prolific 2.0.2.1 USB driver on an XP home system. The cable is being properly detected by XP. The same XP home system is being successfully used to read my BaoFeng UV-5R and my Yaesu VX-7R, both using different USB cables but the same driver. For what ever it may be worth, the RT Systems software (ADMS 2H) is also failing to read the FT-8900, showing a "clone error" on the FT-8900 display when I use the USB cable from www.409shop.com. However, I am able to read the FT-8900 using a USB to Serial adapter and the serial cable that RT systems supplied many years ago. It would appear that my problem is the USB cable from www.409shop.com ... but I would appreciate a second or third opinion. Thanks in advance.. -- John 73's de K9RSQ

I'm happily using CHIRP daily-20130524 with my BF UV-5RA on my Win7 machine - or I was. The original setup defaulted to COM12. When trying to upload a new file today I noted the COM setting had changed to COM13 without my intervention and CHIRP complains: "could not open port COM13: [Error 2] The system cannot find the file specified." Device Manager shows the yellow exclamation triangle for "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM13)" Properties says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" Update driver reports that the driver is current. Advanced Settings for COM13 reports that COM3 through COM12 are in use (thus the bump to COM13 I guess). I'm not sure where to go from here so all advice will be gratefully received. He told me it was a unit locked at the factory to make it part 90 compliant. I have not seen it as we were conferring on our local repeater. I pointed him at the miklor site and suggested holding the locking key for longer than 2 seconds. Thanks to all for your suggestions. None of them worked, though I appreciate your diligent efforts. Even worse, during my thrashing around in attempting yet another fix, the radio locked up in Memory mode, and nothing I attempted worked except the Mono button which somehow kicked the receiver into the frequency for a local hard rock station. Let not your hearts be troubled, however: using and old XP machine and making sure I had the proper Prolific driver, I went to the Baofeng UV-5R user group and looked up Hard Reset. None of the tips worked, either, until I guessed that perhaps loading the Baofeng software might influence things. After doing that and interpreting something that was mentioned in passing on one of the posts and giving it a whirl by inserting a new file [an .img file, perhaps? This concept is not explained anywhere I could find but I think it is what I did], the whole thing came alive! I have concluded that my radio works with the Baodeng software only and that the cloning cable works in XP [using the XP driver] rather than in Windows 7 using the Vista driver. I have programmed a half dozen repeaters into memory and saved it so the next time at least I won't have to start from scratch. In summary, the software [beta, gamma, delta ??] from Baofeng is useable, XP is OK, and I am happy. Thanks again and best of luck. To review my problem: Win7, Prolific 3.2.0.0 7/31/2007 [installed and reinstalled and reinstalled] on com 3, CHIRP 0.3.1, plug end filed down and pushed in HARD, and still get "radio did not respond" when I attempt to download from the radio. I am a new user to the Baofeng F-11 so I might not be getting things correct, though I have reinstalled the cloning cable driver [it is on Com 3] using the Win7 procedure outlined by Wouxun and reinstalled Chirp. When I initially obtained the radio, I pulled up the stock channel program, changed it around a little and uploaded it to the radio using Chirp. A few days later I manually programmed several of the memories and deleted most of the stock memories. Now, when going to the Radio tab on the Chirp software and attempting to Download from Radio, I get an error message which says "radio did not respond." I get the same error message when attempting to upload to the radio from Chirp. Suggestions? Madison Jones W5MJ

This SPAM was partly the fault of the ignorant twit who invited the mail list address to Linked In, and largely the fault of Linked In itself. A few years ago, Linked In used to be a serious professional networking site, but more recently it has become more of a MySpace wannabe. When a person joins Linked In now, every time he logs in he will be pestered by a screen asking him to give linked in access to his email client program so that it can find people he knows on Linked In, but that come on is largely a lie. What Linked In actually does is import every email address in the person's contacts and then it offers to "invite" those addresses to join his "professional network" -- it does not tell the person that most of those addresses are NOT already on Linked In, and it is formatted in such a way that most people never even see the addresses that they are about to "invite" - but by doing so, the person agrees to a set of conditions that allows Linked In to spam every address it found in his contacts. Linked In will then spam those addresses, and about a month later it will spam all the addresses that haven't joined Linked In a second time. Linked In claims that people can opt out of being spammed by their members, but you have to join Linked In before you can opt out. Personally, on the mail lists that I manage, I treat Linked In invitations exactly the same way I treat Grouply invitations -- I immediately ban the individual from that mail list and from all the other mail lists that I manage. With the UV-5R you can enter frequency limits with CHIRP so the user can't enter anything outside those limits manually in VFO mode. You can still program in frequencies outside those limits with CHIRP and upload them to the radio. This is very useful as you can set the radio up for a Ham that may also have need to use the radio on other services for which they are authorized without worrying he may inadvertently transmit or enter and transmit on a frequency he should not. If I enter in frequency limits in the "settings" section in CHIRP for the UV-B5, however, it then will not allow any frequencies outside those frequency limits to be programmed into memories using CHIRP or manually in VFO mode. Is this a limit of the radio or is it possible CHIRP could be changed to work like it does with the UV-5R? Thanks so much for your excellent work!! Steve NV7V

I could use some help figuring out how to make this work. I have tried everything I could think of for 2 days before asking for help. In summary, Chirp 0.3.1 and 0.1.12 will receive configuration data from the Yaesu FT-60 radio, but will not send chirp image data back to the radio to configure it. Permissions on the serial device /dev/ttyS0 are correct: crw-rw---- allowing the dialout group to read/write the serial port, and my userid is a member of the dialout group. The steps I tried are listed below. (Pardon me for the length of the problem-solving narrative but I decided to include a number of false steps and time-consuming problems due to incomplete or erroneous or confusing documentation, in case these are fixable issues, so that others might avoid these troubles.) Thanks for any help you can give. 73, Marcia NU6N ----------------Tried to Solve the Problem Myself------------------ OS = Linux Mint 12 First, installed chirp package from Ubuntu ppa repository (Linux Mint is a Ubuntu derivative and Ubuntu packages almost always work fine): | sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-hams-updates/ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install chirp| What I got was a downlevel chirp 0.1.12. Tested it and chirp 0.1.12 successfully read from the radio. The problem occurs repeatably whenever I try to upload from chirp to the radio. The cable should be OK because it was purchased from Yaesu and has worked before in both directions with Yaesu-provided rig programming software on the same laptop, back when we ran Windows on this laptop. The serial port on the laptop works fine when communicating with the HF rig. And one should try the latest version before asking for help, as the Yaesu FT-60 support might be more complete in the current version, based on differences in the test reports for the two versions ("Test report for CHIRP version 0.1.12" (http://chirp.danplanet.com/download/0.1.12/Test_Report.html shows all functions supported on FT-60 except "clone"; whereas clone is listed as supported on the current beta release 0.3.1 http://chirp.danplanet.com/download/0.3.1/Model_Support.html). I downloaded the 0.3.1 tarball and manually installed it (|sudo python setup.py install)|. I presumed that the necessary libraries were already present as a result of the previous installation of chirp 0.1.12. The manual installation ||produced error messages and chirpw would not run (i.e. was not installed in a way that allowed it to be run from any directory or menu.) However, per the instructions, running chirp 0.3.1 directly from the directory it was unzipped to, via ./chirpw command, worked OK ... except that upload to radio still didn't work. To rule out the possibility of a conflict with code that could have been left over from the 0.1.12 install, I removed chirp 0.1.12 using apt-get remove chirp. Then I manually deleted all files and directories that had been created by the attempted manual install of chirp 0.3.1. || So at this point I am starting over attempting a clean manual install of chirp 0.3.1 from the downloaded tarball. Following the instructions at http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Running_Under_Linux to ensure all prerequisite libraries are present, sudo apt-get install python-gtk python-serial python-libxml2 produced an error message: Package 'python-gtk' has no installation candidate. I ran apt-get update but still no python-gtk. I then ran a complete sudo apt-get upgrade on my system to ensure all my repository-provided software is up to date. After web research I learned there is no longer a python-gtk but there is a python-gtk2, and it is already installed on my system, and is the newest version. I unpacked chirp 0.3.1 and again ran chirp from inside the directory where it was unpacked. (Did not attempt to run the python installer this time.) Again chirp 0.3.1 ran, with the same results as before: Chirp can receive data from the FT-60 radio, but when data from chirp cannot be sent to the radio. Note that I carefully followed the special sequence instructions required for Yaesu radios, always putting the receiving device into receive mode first, before initiating transmit on the other device. Thus, when attempting to send a couple of memories from chirp to the radio, I did the following, which I believe was correct: a. Put the FT-60 into clone mode with the cable connected to the mic/sp port, by powering on while holding the MONI button. Turn the large knob until 'F8 CLONE' appears. Press F/W key. Radio restarts displaying CLONE. Put radio into Rx mode by pressing MONI. Radio displays ---Rx--- and waits to receive data from chirp. b. On Chirp, select Radio then Upload to Radio. The port, vendor and model are set to the same values that work for receiving data from the radio, i.e.: /dev/ttyS0, Yaesu, FT-60. Click OK to begin transmitting to the radio. c. Chirp's prompt appears showing that Chirp is attempting to transmit to the radio. After a short timeout, error message appears: "An error has occurred. Failed to communicate with radio: Radio did not respond." (Note that the radio still displays ---Rx--- ). Uploading the file to the radio a second time seems to have solved the right side not having data issue. Not sure why, but it's fixed. Now if only CHIRP could set the radio to not display alpha tags as the default…changing them one by one on the radio is a hassle!

Managed to get a file uploaded to the FT-8800, with complete success -- except for one little thing: how do I get the RIGHT side of the radio uploaded? (For those who don't have the 8800, the left and right side of the radio have completely separate memories; you can't even copy between them in the radio.) Once I get this figured out, I'm home free!

Problem solved - I'd left the radio in crossband mode! I would have thought that entered the initial set menu (where the clone function is located) would have suspended crossband, but it doesn't. I turned off xband, and the download went without a hitch. Now I can experience the inevitable problems editing and uploading the image file - yippee! Thanks Tom. Yes, I'm following the Yaesu manual to the letter. When the display says "CLONE START", the manual says to push the 'set' button, the screen will blank, and then the display will show "CLONE". I do that, and it does. The manual then says to start the receiving radio, and I click the start button in CHIRP. The manual then says to push the left-bank 'V/M' key to initiate transmission; when I press that button, nothing happens - the display still reads "CLONE", the "-TX-" doesn't show, and CHIRP times out with this error: "Failed to communicate with radio: Failed to read header (0)". I also tried your tip about the radio going into clone mode without a cable - nope, it behaves exactly the same. No "-TX-", no error, no nothing. Using a wideband receiver (as in the pager) to try to receive a narrow band signal ( new system) the audio will be weaker. You can try to modify the pagers to increase the audio going to the tone decode chip. Either changing a resistor or a trim pot might work to increase the audio going to the decode chip. Good luck. I'm getting an error when trying to download data from the Yaesu FT-8800. Computer is an iMac running OS X 10.8.3; I have CHIRP 0.3.1 installed and running. Cable is the Valley Ent. USB programming cable, and I have installed the FTDI VCP drivers; it appears that they've been installed correctly (they're in the proper directory, anyhow.) I'm using the following procedure: - I start CHIRP, click the radio menu and choose "download from radio" - I choose the /dev/cu.usbserial-AE01FMRW port (the others listed are Bluetooth; this is the only other choice) - I choose the radio (Yaesu FT-8800) - I put the radio into clone mode, then click OK in the clone window - After I click the OK button, I press the left V/M button on the radio to initiate the clone transmission. - The radio never goes into transmit mode (it's supposed to display "CLONE -TX-" when transmission is initiated, but it never does.) The CHIRP display shows no progress, and after a short period times out with a communication error message. What am I doing wrong?

I recently purchased a Valley Enterprises RPC-IV8-UF cable (Icom USB OPC-478 FTDI), installed the driver and CHIRP; however, no matter what I do I cannot get the radio to download to my iMac. Here are some specifics: Mac OS 10.8.3 CHIRP (vers. 0.3.1) GTK 2024010 PyGTK 2.22.0 Python 2.7.2 I click Download from Radio from the Radio pull down menu. Then I select: /dev/cu.usbserial-AH01D7KW, Icom and IC-T70 in the radio window. After clicking OK, some sort of cloning window flashes briefly on the screen and the error message, Failed to communicate with the radio: Unexpected response from radio appears. Also, at this time both the green and red LEDs on the cable flash once. I get the same response regardless of whether the radio is ON or OFF. If the cable is not connected, I get a different error message, could not open port /dev....., which makes sense. Right now I'm suspecting a bad cable or something wrong with my HT. By the way, I can get the HT into the cloning mode manually, but that had no effect one way or the other. The HT appears to be working normally in all other aspects. I'd like to know, first of all, what pin is what on the cable's 3.5mm radio plug, and secondly, is there anything else that could possibly be wrong that I can/should check? Thanks, Vince

I see that the logo is a DB9 connector and the program allows only a COM1 setting but I thought I'd ask anyway since I have only the USB cable for my Baofeng UV-5RA. Greetings, I just recently picked up a TH-F6A and love chirp! However, I've got a few issues: 1) Entering Live mode. With the radio in PC mode, sometimes I can't get it to download / enter live mode.. but it's flaky. I have fewer issues with 0.3.1 stable and 20130510 than I do with the newer dailies. When it fails, the screen stays empty after initiating download, and then if I try again, it says access denied and I have to quit the program. 2) Tune Step on Import. A friend took time to put various freqs into CHIRP for his UV-5R and sent me a copy of his file. The file includes frequencies that do not land on a 5kHz step, for example FRS frequencies. The file from the UV-5R does not include a tune step field, while the Kenwood TH-F6A has a tune step field. If entering one of those frequencies into Chirp individually, setting a frequency that doesn't fall on a step will return error 93 "radio refused". However, if by import, the import screen doesn't realize it would be a problem entry and gray it out. When the import runs, the affected channels are skipped quickly (while successfully programmed channels are programmed at a slower pace.) For successful imports, the tune step is defaulted to 5kHz. A workaround could be to take Freq in MHz and divide by .005 and see if (floor(freq) != freq) then default the tune step to 6.25, or otherwise calculate it. 3) Mode on import: NFM is specified for some entries in the UV-5R file. The Kenwood does have an FMN mode though. If NFM could be mapped to FM at the user's discretion, that would be useful rather than kicking it out. … and that's it! Has anyone else experienced problems importing a CSV file. I'm using the latest build of CHiRP and have used CHiRP with various radios for about a year now. I created (exported) a CSV from a BaoFeng UV5R. I added some memory locations to the file and saved the CSV. The UV5R was connected to the computer, CHiRP (5/21) started and read the layout from the radio. When I tried to import the CSV file it gave an error that it could only read the first 16 lines and was unable to handle lines 17 to 92. Ideas? -- Charles J. I can't connect to my TM-D710. If I select Kenwood & Detect, it says Unsupported Model TM-D710P, if I select Kenwood & tell it I have a TM-D710, it just goes back to a blank Chirp page... Since you got the cable from Valley, it's almost certainly an FTDI chipset. The Prolific driver is completely useless for this cable. As I've learned from others on this group (Thanks Robert Terzi): > The RT Systems cables I've seen are made with FTDI chips. But you have to know what you're doing with plists and vid/pids, and have the motivation/need to do it. Hello. I have a Baofeng UV-B6, I see that Chirp has support for the -B5 but I've tried reading the B6 and it doesn't do anything useful. What's the status on support for these? Does anyone else have one they're playing with? Hello, I am new user to CHIRP. I am using CHIRP 0.3.1 on a Macbook PRO with the latest version of Mt Lion. I got the USB cable from Valley and i am unable to get the radio to connect. I have tried all the suggestions on the WIK (drivers from RT, and the ones from prolific) and none have worked. When i select the ports there are no ports other then bluetooth modem and bluetooth PDF sync. Thank you very much / Rob

We don't have to be stingy with disk space nowadays. I save everything (well, almost everything) and I append date & time strings to file names for version history. One time I didn't save, although I wanted to, was when I was programming a mobile, and wearing pants with a fair amount of synthetic fiber, which especially in our dry climate equals static zaps. At one point I stuck the mouse in my pocket and it lost it (but later recovered); I had finished modifying the program in the radio but couldn't save it since the laptop was going wacko. Which I discovered when I went back inside and tried to save. But the radio was OK; I just had to read it back out the next time the guy was around. Hi For any that have been following my attempt at finding how to get the CHIRP icon to show on my desktop. It turned out to be real simple and I must have found it when I first started using Chirp but forgot how to get it. The way I solved it as I said is simple, I looked in the Applications Menu and in there I have "Hamradio" and under it is my three ham radio applications. All I had to do was click and hold and draw down to the desktop and a launcher was created, with the icon showing the little serial plug. So manually creating the launcher does not find the icon, so I am happy at this point and yes I guess it is a little thing but that must be a little part of me that is OCD, and I just have to live with it. Hello I would like to thank you first for an excellent piece of software. It works really well for most of the radios I have used it with. I was trying to find the archive to see if this has been discussed already (unsuccessfully), and finding none thought I should bring it up. I am currently trying to programme a Yaesu FTM-350 using a daily build (from yesterday, 27th April). It seem to do a very good job, except for the fact that when reading from the radio, it changes all the symbols (like :, ;, >, etc.) into a single back-tick (`) rather than retaining the original symbol programmed to the radio. Not sure if it can write back -- have not tried that yet. Will post once I get the chance. Thanks again for the hard work. Regards Shah

Hi I have wondered about where and what file is the icon for the app? I have created a launcher as I have done before but don't now have the icon for Chirp. I actually am not real sure if it is in the correct place either. I got on the Chirp web site and followed the instructions for setting up the PPA but didn't see anything on the desktop, so I created one after finding what looks like the App in I think /usr/share sub directories. Hi All; I bought this little radio last summer at the hamfest in Plano, TX along with the Windows software and the Prolific programming cable. I initially installed the software on an old Windows Vista machine and programmed a number of frequencies without a problem. I recently got around to installing it on a newish Win7-64 box and had to do quite a lot of mucking with it to get the USB stuff working, but finally had success. I then downloaded Chirp (daily build) and it read the radio with no problem at all (as the UV-3R). So then I thought I would give Chirp a whirl on my Linux Mint Debian x64 laptop. Installed via Synaptic and it worked the first time without a hiccup. Woohoo! I had to run it as root (easily fixed, betcha) and it also saw the radio as a UV-3R. Now for my Kenwood TM-G707A's.... I'm running a Mac /OS 10.7.5 and can't get the computer to find the proper USB port. I've installed KK7DS Python runtime but no luck. I downloaded the latest daily build. Still trying to get it out of my computer. I shows as 10M, something really bad happened to it. I can't even send it to trash and I certainly am not going to run it. [chirp_users] Problem Setting CTCSS Tones

I'm a new Chirp user and have probably overlooked something simple but have run into a problem I can't seem to figure out. I'm using the latest build of Chirp, daily-20130411, and am running from a Mac Mini, OS X Lion, through an FTDI USB cable. No problems communicating with the radio, an FT-817ND. I have broadbanded it so am using the generic FT-817ND template, not the US model, which doesn't seem to work with a broadbanded radio. As stated, I have loaded an image of my radio, and have successfully modified several memories. However, I am unable to make the Home channels take a different tone frequency. No matter what I put in, it remains at 88.5 and gives an error box saying "rtone not supported on this channel." The normal channels accept the Tone value without issue. I also just noticed that I can't set the Power on Home channels as well. So am I doing something wrong or is this a bug? Thanks for the help, Ron WA5VFA

[chirp_users] Puxing 777 Plus shows "out of range"

When trying to either import CSV/CHIRP files or just writing the data read from the radio back to it, CHIRP tells me that my frequencies are out of range. It's a 2m radio, and it's telling me that 146.970 and 147.000 are outside of the allowed range. I tried using both the latest released version and the 20130411 nightly. I'm on OS X 10.8.2 if it matters. Does anyone have a hint as to where to look to fix this? No matter what I do, the Offset Frequencies always come out as 00.0000 on the radio, despite setting them up and showing correctly on Chirp, with relevant shift. Anyone know why that might be? Cannot change the manually either? Thanks Jeremy
