Users, I'm a complete newbie to Ham and Chirp. Fairly savvy wrt to software. This is the first time connecting UV-5R to Mac. Chirp starts fine and I do have Python installed. When starting up Chirp, debug.log spits out... Icon /usr/share/pixmaps/chirp.png not found Initialized MacOS support /Applications/chirp-0.3.1.app/Contents/MacOS/../Resources/chirp/chirpw:128: PangoWarning: error opening config file '../Resources/etc/pango/pangorc': No such file or directory Two items from that output... - I don't see a chirp.png in the /Applications/chirp-0.3.1.app tree. - I don't see a pangorc in the /Applications/chirp-0.3.1.app tree. I'm attempting to "Download from radio", I try the four port selections. I do have the USB cable plugged in and radio on. Re: Yaesu programming My experience with the FT-897D is that the engineering is poor. I never used chirp with the rig. It would simply die after a few months, sent it to them to repair and it kept going dead a few months after each repair. I use it now for a book-end. The lesson I learned is to not purchase any Yaesu gear. The techs fix symptoms - not the cause Chirp works well. The trick is getting a good cable and the correct drivers for the cable. The other point is to read the rig's memory to ascertain that everything shows signs of working properly before attempting to write to the rig. [chirp_users] Yaesu radios and Chirp

I programmed 2 Yaesu Radios with Chirp My old VX-5R no problems My FT-817 I uploaded then downloaded and then no more reading or writing was possible. I tried master reset on FT-817 but no computer programming is possible now. I can enter channels manually. Is this a Chirp fault? I doubt it. I use Chirp to program Wouxun, Boafeng, Yaesu VX-5. I love it it's great Always use the driver which came with the USB cable and don't let windows update the driver when it wants to and you will have no cable related problems. 73, Bob VK2BYF --

There is one thing to get this motorolas to work properly has a repeater: reduce the power to 1/4 of a watt up to 5 watts and use it to drive an amplifier. then you have a 100% duty repeater. I can offer a loaner and something else. Alex/KG4TRV

Hello! I'm new so have no knowledge of current discussions! Chirp is an incredible tool and it worked great on the first try with my handheld! The reference materials helped me find a driver that worked for my old Sabrent Serial to USB adapter cable on my Mac running OS X 10.8.5. Hurray!

I am able to set all the parameters in the software but when I set a minus or plus shift it will not record or change from none. It changes in the small edit box but not on the program file. Thanks in advance for the help. Frank

[chirp_users] Baofeng uv-5r plus not able to read from

Hello, I just purchase a UV-5R+ and was trying to program it. I'm using the chirp-daily respository version. USB Cable: : Prolific Technology Inc. pl2303 3-2:1.0: pl2303 device: /dev/ttyUSB0 UV-5R+ Firmware: BFB297 (as reported via power-on) I get the typical unable to connect to radio, but when it is trying to clone I see on the HT the "Welcome...." message and then I get the timeout message. As for the cable, it does seem to be full seated. I have pressed and held the plug in to make sure and get the same results. First is there a debug mode I can turn on to capture the hand shake between the computer and the UV-5R+. I figure this would help the list. Tony

Hi Thanks to all that have tried to help me solve this issue. Turns out to have been a slight operator error, I think. After getting the correct driver installed, I did mention that I saw the com port number in device manager. I also was not getting the second window but that was solved by the new build I installed. On my XP system when the window with com port and other choices showed the com port was populated, on the Vista system is was not. So I added "Com 3" in the slot, vendor and radio, attempted and failed, many times. The solution turns out to be I should have entered for port, "com3" which worked fine. Things on the Vista are getting somewhat better but still not like it was before the reload of the OS but progressing. At least now I can make changes to the memories of my Vx5R, FT817 and FT2800 fromt he PC I may be portable with. Again thanks to all who have responded with ideas. Marty kd8bj

I have the TYT TH-UV5R. When I use Chirp software to program the radio the radio connects to the computer and when I try to upload from the radio to the computer the light on the radio flashes and appears to upload the data to the program. I see where there is a tab showing the TYT upload but nothing shows (no radio frequency contents) in the program and I don't see the data in any program folder. Can someone kindly point me in the right direction in order to use Chirp. thank you kindly Paul

Hi Well help in Chirp doesn't have anything, went to the web site, on FAQ about my USB/Serial adapter which has worked in the past isn't as yet. I have the correct driver for Vista and loaded. In the device manager I see the Com port 3. My issue is I don't ever get asked to enter the Com port. My Rig is the VX5R and according to the FAQ for Yaesu it says to put the rig in Clone mode, then launch Chirp and click on "Download from rig". When I do that I get nothing. I may have to go back to using my other PC which has Linux, or use the VX commander. Any ideas? Marty kd8bj

I have my CAT cable now working in my virtual Win7 (running on VirtualBox), so I don't have to use a separate computer when working with the radio. I also run Linux Mint on the same host but because HamRadioDeluxe doesn't run on Linux (I know CHIRP does), I have to use a Windows host...... You need the 2.3.0.0 Driver to work right and no there is not a key code sequence to program it with. Just hook up the cable to it. plug it into the usb. Load the software and tell it to read from the radio on the comport you have set for the cable. Then program it and save it then write back to the radio. It will take care of it all automatically. I need help getting chirp to down load, extract in to XP. Have down load to XP desk top , c & my documents, Can't find an execute file to get chip to load up. Have z7 zip on desk top to. ok, I just sent this directly to tom. It appears that mine is a PX-888 (vhf only). I seriously wish there was some support for it in the daily build. Also, since I am blind and on a limited income, I can't just go out and purchase another radio just to have it taken apart. anyway, I really need to be able to program my radio without having to depend on others (when they have time, etc.). Also, I just sent out an email to Kevin Lim (at puxingradio) asking for either the command set or just to make their program accessible to me. I don't expect a response (its been that way with chinese companies for a long time). [chirp_users] UV-B6 : howto get into programming mode

Hello , totally new to this world, so hang with me a bit. i purchased the UV-B6 the other day. never could get the PL-2303 driver to work on Win7. the cd that came with the cable didn't only had drivers for XP & Vista. tried Vista driver too. downloaded 1.1.19 driver, that didn't work under Win7 either. so i fired up an old XP notebook, and poof, the XP PL driver installed and is working and i have Chirp installed on that machine too. i'm trying to initiate a download so i can create my first template. didn't even know to do that if i hadn't gone to this site: http://www.miklor.com/UVB5/UVB5-CHIRP.php of course now the Chirp sw is returning the radio didn't ack programming mode. my eyes just don't see anywhere in the manual that came with the UV-B6 what key-combo? needed to put this unit in programming mode. is there like a wiki for "uv-b6 dummies" or something that would help me get started? tia -- Bill Key fingerprint = DB4D 251B FE8A BDCD 2BE4 E889 13F1 78D0 A386 B32B

This question must have been asked a million times already, but as I'm a new HAM in the Netherlands (since last Monday), I ask it one more time. I have a Yaesu FT-857D (US model) and a cheap Chinese USB cable that I bought from Ebay. I have insalled HamRadioDeluxe and this program can communicate with the radio over COM3. The cable is recognized as USB-SERIAL CH340 (COM3) in Win7. Now I installed CHIRP and I get the error 'Failed to communicate with radio: Unable to read block 00 expected 4 got 0' I searched the internet and found some hints: - Press the send button on the radio after clicking OK in CHIRP (I wondered what is 'the send button'? This radio has a million buttons) - Press the A button under the screen after cliking OK in CHIRP (the A button has manny functions on the 857, so which menu should be selected) - Set the CAT speed to 9600bps (did that) So basically the question is which menu I should select before pressing the A button. hello there, ok, I have tried both the stable release version that came with ubuntu 13.04 and the daily build produced yesterday. both aren't reading my radio correctly. on the stable release, only every 3rd memory location (frequency) is visible. On the development version, it shows values that are supposed to be in other fields (such as PL tone being in the frequency field, etc.). unfortunately, I can't seem to make sense of how its arranged (I use a screen reader here as I am blind) and even in Braille, it displays much the same. I need to be able to program this radio for some public service events and I can't do so in either OS X or windows (using the windows binaries provided by the manufacturer is equally as useless under jaws). Chirp there just displays a blank application screen. Under OS x, it displays some of the information, but none of the memory channels or other fields in that table. I really would like to be able to use this package, but it seems to be beyond my reach right now. Also, as I am not a coder (my skills are in systems administration, security and database management), I can't just go in and change how the thing operates. lastly, I don't have any method by which I can capture a screen output on the linux machine to show what is going on. I also don't have a lot of money to spare (as I live on disability), so sending a radio to be tested for development is out of my reach (and I only have the one radio). Now, considering that I am a ham and also blind, I am really in a very small population group. Still, I would consider it a great favor if someone *(anyone) would help to make this project more accessible for those like me (there are several thousand blind hams in the US alone). Now I have tried getting hold of the manufacturer in china, only to be completely ignored (I have 2 strikes against me already: 1. I am american, 2. I am blind). so, how about it? anyone up to the challenge? -eric

ok, I have chirp installed on a ubuntu 13.04 box. Its operation appears to be a bit inconsistent. Sometimes it will run and display the program frame. other times it just sits there and is invisible to the orca screen reader. the second issue is that it can't seem to obtain permissions to read from the com port (which is a prolific device on a USB dongle). I have confirmed that the device is loaded and working properly (I can set up a terminal session between 2 machines with it). However, all attempts (that are visible to me) result in the error "cannot read from device. Permission denied". I have tried running it from a terminal session using sudo and it won't even become visible to my screen reader. In case you are wondering, I am blind. So, I need a little help here. now, I have made sure that my user is administrator on the machine, so there shouldn't be this problem. suggestions? -eric

ok, I got the port permissions issue resolved (its a bug in the initial system setup and I wasn't added to dial out). However, now I have this problem: radio: PX-777 vendor: puxingradio port: /dev/ttysusb0 downloading profile from radio… error: radio did not ACK first command. ok, so how do I get around this? The version of chirp I am using is on uBuntu 13.04 and I don't get have a development environment setup. do I have to get one of the daily builds to make this work? -eric

I use RTS software and cables with no problems. I have the VX-2,VX8-GR! and cables and the FT-950 cable. Why mess with something else that you have to be a c++engineer to get to work. Gentlemen............I have spent the last 3 days trying to understand how to program my UV5R. The cable will communicate with the radio using the BaoFeng CD so I think that's not the issue. I have spent hours reading all the "must read first" literature and gleaning very little. In attempting to use Chirp I click on the radio title on the top. Download to Radio is not highlighted but Upload From Radio is but when I click on that I get an error msg saying the radio did not respond. I'm going nowhere. Can someone pse adv me how to bring up the programming page and how to use it to program basic repeater and simplex freqs before my wife asks me to move out ?? M Schontz k8fu(a)aol.com

In addition she has emailed me back several times as I had her run some diagnostics and wanted to view her kernel messages. Kernel message says the FTDI chip load ok. I successfully downloaded all the frequencies from my Yaesu VX7R using Chirp. I am a Mac user, downloaded Python and have followed all the steps carefully. I have an RT Systems cable and downloaded the Mac Driver. My Mac reads the cable by name when I choose it for download/uploads from the Mac on Chirp. I am unable to Upload the original file (that I did not edit), or the edited version I hope to Upload. Cloning is working in Rx mode when I start Upload and I get the progress bar. Every time the progress bar reaches about the "N" above "Cancel", my VX7R switches from Clone Rx to VF0 430.000. Then the progress bar only continues to the "L" above "Cancel", and everything freezes. Often the freeze can be stopped with Force Quit, other times I have to shut down with the power button on my computer. I have also tried using a Future Technology Devices International cable which my computer recognizes as well (downloaded driver from FTDI website). Any suggestions? Now my radio has none of the Fx on it that I so painstakingly entered manually (100+). I'm thrilled there is hope for programing with my Mac and hope I am just missing something. Hi All, I’ve been watching this page in amazement. For pretty much volunteer work, great job. I try and read all the posts regarding the UV-5R, own 2, have no trouble with them. A club member asked me to program his, the version comes up as USA349, and I have had no success getting access to it with the program. Always says it can’t communicate with the radio. Have tried all the connector suggestions. Any thoughts? It does accept keypad input. JD

Evidently this new version (supposedly) of the KG-UV6D isn't any different where Chirp is concerned. My KG-UV6D badged the F-11 is able to share image files with the new V2 Wouxun directly. No need to download first, just upload the F-11 file to the radio and you are cloned. Well, the radios are cloned. So this must be a marketing ploy to increase slumping sales with a newer version and a lower price.

Didn't see the 706 included in the list of supported radios. And don't see mention of being able to program memories. I have given up, and have gotten a refund already from eShow.b2c -- they hadn't shipped yet. Nice people, and I appreciate their integrity. I have successfully downloaded, modified and uploaded memory settings. I thought that I could save such a file, and then use it for a subsequent upload if that became necessary. What I did: I used what I had saved from a previous download, modified it, and then attempted to upload it. I got an error: Failed to communicate with radio: Radio did not ack block 0 Can I only upload the same file that I downloaded? If that's the case, why would one save a file? Thanks, Peter KO6R

I have been trying to program a VX5R with no success, I have tried 2 different types of USB cables and 2 different types of programs, chirp being one of them. I am able to read from the radio but when I go to write to the radio I get a comm error message. Has anyone else run into this problem? 73 John K2IZ

I finally got the Windows self extracting (.exe) version of the Chirp LiveCD updated on the website. Both the .iso and the .exe versions contain the 27 August Chirp-daily. If you are using this as a LiveUSB and have updated Chirp with the Chirp Updater script, there is no need to download this version. In fact, you probably have a newer Chirp-daily. http://sourceforge.net/projects/chirplivecd/ I had a request to include ORCA on the next release. Unfortunately, I will unable to make that happen. The ChirpLiveCD uses XFCE and ORCA does not run natively on it. I don't have the bandwidth to download the required files to make it work. Perhaps in a few months when I return home I will be able to include it. Bob

I have CHIRP running on a desktop under 10.8.4. Now, I would like to run it on an older laptop running OS 10.6.8, to take in the field to program other folks in our group. I have attempted to install the Python runtime package. The install window comes up, but it it stalls on the second step (Destination Select). The "Continue" button is greyed out. I can go no further with it, and, yes, CHIRP doesn't run. Is there a different runtime version I need? Jim K6MIO

The only time I have had problems using Chirp is when I inadvertantly was using the wrong Prolific Driver. A number of leads/programs use various drivers from Prolific and the PC very often gets them confused. Including me! The most recent one being for the CW lead. Regards John G0PJU

Heck, it's not even 11pm yet! I was able to download and upload successfully, making sure to select the non-US model of the 897. I did discover along the way that one of the 232-USB cables is bad, but that was a gift (also this morning) from a fellow cleaning out junk. RT systems makes great programming software, yes not "freeware" but it works and also ties to the ARRL Repeater cd and Rfinder seamlessly. I use several of their discs and have not had any problems. Hello: I'm a newbie to this group. I just was loaned a cable that works perfectly for my friend who has an FT-7900. I have an FT-897. Questions: 1. Is there a problem with compatibility with the cable? The indicator does glow red when I'm plugged into a USB port. 2. I downloaded CHIRP to both my ubuntu 10.04 drive and my XP drive. On the Ubuntu version, there is no option for FT-897. That's version 0.2.1. On the XP drive, there is that option. However, for both, I get an error on the radio after I've hit transmit. On Ubuntu, I'm told that the header couldn't be read. No message on the XP version, but no luck either -- same error shows up on the radio. Now what? 3. Tried to figure out how to get an updated version for Ubuntu, so that I could find the FT-897 listed. Couldn't find that. Feeling like a total dummy at this point, and disappointed that I couldn't just plug it in and go for broke. Any help greatly appreciated. Peter KO6R

I have an ic-2100, Icom USB OPC-478 FTDI (Valley Enterprises), driver from ftdichip.com and Windows XP setup. The usb serial port is on com 5 (I checked in device manager). With the ic 1200 in the clone mode, asking chirp to download from the radio, clicking OK and pushing the smwmw button on the radio, I get “An error has occurred. Failed to communicate with the radio unexpected response from radio”. I even tried without putting the radio in the clone mode......same response.....also tried two other computers (one XP and one Windows 7). When I ask the program to detect the radio I get....”An error has occurred. Unable to get radio model.” Am I missing a step or two or doing things wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Jean N2VQA

I'm running Chirp on OS 10.8.4, trying to program a bunch of radios (Baofeng UV-5R) for our Civil Defense volunteer CERT communicator groups. I am aware that there are some issues with certain cables. So far, I purchased two cables (from different vendors), most recently Wouxum-US. In all cases, I am unable to connect to any of the radios using CHIRP (Mac) or the Windows (XP) with the Baofeng code. I've used the drivers with both that came from the Wouxum site. In both Mac and Windows, the software comes up and presents itself. When I attempt to read the radio, after a pause, I get a failed to connect message. Can you give me direction as to how best to fix this?

As others have said, you need to insure a firm mechanical connection with the Baofeng. I put a rubber band around the combination to insure the adapter fully bottoms. If I don't do that, or hold pressure, I get lots of errors. 73s, Alan WA4SCA

if you can read from radio-your cables are ok. i have received errors when trying to read to radio-retry-sometimes 2nd or 3rd try will read to radio, so keep trying. do not stop on first error message. not sure what the quirk is. have reloaded drivers etc. and does not seem to make difference. have learned to work around it. 73 jim kf8sj (we are now up to 11 units in our local vfd all working quite well)

Greetings All! I am new to CHIRP, but I was able to easily install the Mac software onto my MacBook and to install the driver to use the Icom OPC-478UC USB cloning cable. I was then able to "Download From Radio" from my IC-80AD. The memories load fine. However, the Repeater List does not appear ... so I do not see anywhere my DR mode settings ... which is critical to using the radio on D-Star. Perhaps I am missing something? I would really appreciate any help anyone can give, and if this was addressed previously I apologise in advance -- I did a manual search of the archive going back a year and did not see anything helpful. One issue I did notice is that the IC-80AD is not in the list of models available (even though it is listed as a supported radio) when you try to Download ... and the DETECT thinks it is an ID-80H .... not sure if that is meaningful or not. Hi there, I am new to the group and have also used chirp. We import wouxuns into South Africa and the following happened to a customer of ours. He loaded an image file and burned it into 3 radios, the problem is that there is calibration data that is unique to the radio in the image file, so he destroyed 2 radios. HI, I have a Yaesu FT-8000R dual band radio that I would like to help get supported in CHIRP. I can loan the radio and cable. The radio is modified for wide RX/TX. If useful, I can provide a PDF of the user manual & (only) 23 pages of the service manual. The USB FTDI cable is from Valley Enterprises "Yaesu USB FT-7800 FTDI 10 feet". Also known as part#: RPC-Y7800-U-3M. I believe that this is the right cable, and it does fit into the back of the radio, but I am not 100% sure. I got the idea that the cable for the 7800 is the same as for the 8000 because RT Systems offers the same cable for 9 different Yaesu radios including the 8000 & 7800. http://www.rtsystemsinc.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=USB-29B I tried using the CHIRP setting for Yaesu 7800 to download from this FT-8000R without success. CHIRP is working great for me now! Whoo-ho! :-) I'll have to remember that if the speaker/mic doesn't work, to switch menu #9 ("SP/MIC JACK") back from "PC" to "SP/MIC". I see that CHIRP doesn't doesn't do "upload" to Kenwood THF6A, it's even easier that that. You just download from radio, then edit it live onscreen, and any changes are immediately sent back into the radio. Wow, that's easy! I also like being able to "Exchange Memories" to move them around. I also love being able to save a copy of all the freqs from the radio to the computer as a backup. This so so cool! I can hardly wait to use CHIRP with another radio which I consider much more difficult to program from the dashboard. I have updated the ISO version of Chirp LiveCD. I have not uploaded the .exe version yet. It takes me about 30 hours per upload due to my extremely slow internet connection. I will try to get the exe uploaded in the next few days. Like the previous updates, the only change is the new Chirp Daily (27 August) is included. If you are using a LiveUSB setup and have updated it using the Chirp Updater, there is no need to download this version. It depends on which radio but on most it is turn the radio, with cable attached, on and you're in programming mode. [chirp_users] Step setting on radios

The step is the channel spacing amount. You can set this on many radios from 25 to 2.5 MHz. When you turn a tuning know in VFO mode, this is the amount the radio changes frequency by. If the radio's step is too high, it will not allow entry of some frequencies and will do something (variable by radio) to go to the next higher or lower frequency which complies with the step value you have set. Ø Your package index files are stale. Always run "apt-get update" before "apt-get upgrade". Trouble is, as was in the original (ornate) message, this was an AUTOMATIC update. I did not run anything. I am not sure what to run to do an update yet. I have not gotten to that part of the book yet. This window came up and I let it run and thats what it said (http://ppa.launchpad.net/dansmith/chirp-snapshots/ubuntu/pool/main/c/chirp- daily/chirp-daily_20130822~precise~1_amd64.deb 404 Not Found) I did try the two command (with the required SUDO added in front) and they did stuff. What I was trying to report that the automatic update failed. Thanks for the manual entries. I can fall back on these when the automatic fails again. Mike

I need some help here please. I have LinuxMint 14 installed on my laptop. Mint sees my USB cable as ttyUSB0. However, all Chirp sees is tty0 and above, no USB anything, thus I can't begin to connect to anything until I can get Chirp to recognize my USB ports.
