Hey all Got the new Baofeng BF-F8HP radio. Download the daily build suggest by the seller on Amazon. Got Chrip installed. Radio image loaded to Chirp OK Question is I have RT Systems software with all the data from my Powerwerx DB-750X loaded and I would like to import into Chirp and load the the F8HP. I have tried exporting as a CSV file from RT Systems, but the Chirps give an error on import. There are many more columns in RT with data than Chirp has and they are in a different order. I have search through several months of posts and did not find anything specific to my needs. Can some one direct me to a post or youtube video showing how to move the data from the RT software to the Chrip program that will function with the new BF-F8HP. Also I see that this radio has only 120 memory channels is that correct? Respectfully AD Sent from my iPad

Helle Robin, welcome to the group! Although I don't have a ready solution for your problem, I want to make clear that you don't need the cable connected to your computer te be able to start Chirp. Chirp is just a program, that will run at any time. It only needs the cabe (or more exactely a COM-port) to communicate with the radio. So, as long as you do not need to communicate with the radio (eg. because you want to edit a file) is will not matter if the cable is connected or not. Having said that, please disconnect te cable and see if Chirp starts correctly. This way you will be able to check if it is a Chirp problem or a cable problem that you have. When it looks like a Chirp problem, please try the stable version. I also use that version and it will work with the UV-82 (I use one). To check if the cable is installed correctly, please check your Device Manager, Ports (COM & LPT). Your cable should be listed there. It will also mention the COM-port-number that you will need to select in Chirp when you want to communicate with the radio later. Good evening all, Thanks for adding me to the group. This is my first msg to the group! I recently purchase 3 Baofeng UV-82 with the original Baofeng programing cable. I followed the instruction to the letter on on http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_CHIRP.php#start to installed the driver and the CHIRP software. Now when I click on the CHIRP icon, the msg : ''Error reporting is disable : If you wish to disable this feature, you may do so in the help menu.'' I click OK and the dialogue box closes and the program doesn't open. I have the correct driver and I downloaded the program (daily version). The cable is correctly connected to my computer and to my radio (the pins are completely pushed into the radio). Before I click the CHIRP icon, I have the radio plugged into the computer and it's on frequency mode. Is there anything I've missed or someone can think of? HI all. I had such good luck with the Chirp forum (Jim) helping me with my Wouxun I thought I'd try my luck with the Yaesu VX-7R. I have an FTDI chipped cable. I am able to download from radio without problem. I can edit channels/freqs in Chirp, but I am unable to upload back to the radio. The radio starts to go through the cloning process (upload), but it gets hung up about 3/4 of the way through the process (according to the chirp status bar). The radio just says Clone error. Chirp freezes up, and needs to be forced quit. I am using a mac, 10.9.4 and a chirp daily build from about a week ago. This radio is just a back up to my Wouxun at this point as my Wouxun's TX and RX are leaps and bounds better than my Yeasu! Thanks in advance. Rob

I know that the present developers are not working with Andriod as it is quite a bit of work and changes to the code, but I did see someone or some comments to the effect that someone maybe picking it up, as a fork or a separate solution. I no longer carry a laptop, I use a tablet for all of my travel work, the only reason I would carry a laptop is to program my radio. But with the airlines charging for everything now, you have to measure what you carry. If someone is working on a Android version I would like to see if there is anyway I can help, more than anything else perhaps doing testing. I have a IC=92 that I can test on.

New user but had my UV5R working great. Until I started Chirp and adjusted some freqs that worked great. However I noticed it was very quiet. After checking all works good Except no speaker volume.Many years ago I was a 2 way tech for Motorola and learned that when u plug in an ear bud and hear radio great but remove earphone nothing, it is likely a bad earphone jack. Hello ! With Debian, package for daily is called "chirp-daily" instead of "chirp". Package "chirp" is provided by the distro. Package "chirp-daily" has been downloaded by myself and installed with command "dpkg -i chirp-daily". After installation, the command to launch daily is "chirpw". With PPA for Ubuntu added, I suppose (and only suppose) : -> apt-get install chirp for stable -> apt-get install chirp-daily for daily Hope it will be usefull for you. 73 ! Matthieu F4ACU JN07JG

Im new to the forum but not to radios....anyone have any experience with the baofeng uv-6? I have a lot of radios im trying to get programmed and cant seem to get through to the radio i get an error msg with chirp and a radio refussed clone through the native software im using a cloned cable and have since bought a new one from HRO which still gives the same error msg. I know the driver is correct because it sees the the cable and the software sees the radio due to the error msg. New Troop here. I am very glad there is a Chirp. This UV5R is driving me up the walls. It took me awhile to get it programming with but then started working good. Then later it refused to program as it was working. I think it had something to do with shutting down my pc. Worked hard with many different trys and finally got programming working again seeminglt by deleting then reinstalling Chirp. Now programming has stopped working again. Says radio will not respond. So,deleted Chirp and reinstalled. That didnt work this time. Any advice much appreciated! Hi All I have only been on this reflector for a month or so. So if this was already discussed or is on the Chirp web site my apologizes. If you have a Kenwood TH-K2 before you can program the radio using any software including Chirp you need to go to menu item number 31 (PC) and change it to "On". When you have finished programming your TH-K2 you will then need to go to menu item 31 (PC) and turn it to "Off" otherwise your speaker mike will not function properly. I found this out today when I was unable to program the HT using a known good cable and Slacko Puppy Linux for the os. Searched all around the web and finally opened the radio manual which explained about menu item 31 Hope this is of some help to some other TH-K2 owner. Hello, I am nat able to download from my radio using Chrip. My radio is a Baofeng uv-82. It is a new radio and I am new to chirp. My OS is windows 7. The cable is a usb programming cable form Baofeng via amazon. The cable drivers are installed corectly. I can open the com port under Tera Term and shorting the TX and RX contacts togethter I can get it echo what I type. I can also probe the connection and see resonable data on the O-scope. I have tryed the stable as well as the nightly build of chirp. When I try to download I get the error "the radio did not respond". It is hard to see but I think the cable is seated al the way in. With just the cable and tuning on the radio, It will not key but as soon as i plug the usb cable in the radio will key. I have also tried to download from the radio on "copying" mode by holding down the 2 key while turning on the power. If I do this with tera term opend to the right com port I get a repeating set of bytes that look to be binary (garbaled ascii chars). Any Ideas? thanks, kk6onl

While attempting to program my new Baofeng BF-F8HP radio I received the following error message Unsupported firmware version: `N5R-30 F8HP-1 '. I was able to download from the radio but not upload. This is using the daily build dated 8/12/14 which supports the radio. Please any ideas ? I did try to use the UV5r settings as I do with my BF8-8+ and the radio downloaded, but again I could not upload.. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks , Brian KM4CMY

[chirp_users] Chirp will download from FT-60, but not upload.

Having issues uploading from Chirp to a Yaesu FT-60. Have tried two different computers, both with serial ports, using a serial to 4-pin programming cable. Both computers are running Windows XP Pro SP3. Chirp successfully installed on both machines and will read from the radio without issue. When I try to upload back to the radio, even the file it just read, I get a message that "An error has occurred - Failed to communicate with radio: Radio did not respond" The radio was in the RX mode at the time, is fully charged and works otherwise. Suggestions? Thanks! Keith-

Hi Rolan, Thank you, I tried that too, didn't work either. I even reinstalled the Prolific driver (the one provided with the cable). Tried both procedures again: the one I described before and the simpler that you suggested. [chirp_users] Unused Fields Option and the missing NONE selections

Well thanks for the tongue lashing (that's a little overboard) but it was a little lecture on the "Hide Unused Fields" checkbox and how it is now going to be the default and solve all my problems. IT DOES NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM!!! Read on to learn why. So I load up my data and change the option to hide unused fields. OK, all those pesky 88.5s in the sheet magically disappear. OK, great. But then I change one of the PLs to 100.0. Oops, since there are no horizontal lines to help guide me across a sea of blankness, I got one off and meant to change the next one down. OK, just set it back off by ... uhhhh... THERE IS NO "NONE" selection. I CANNOT SET IT BACK TO OFF!! Aww nuts, now I have to either delete this memory and enter it in again or kill all my updates and reload the sheet and start again. Neither is a good thing to have to do because of a missing option in a box on a sheet without any guide rules (lines) to help me get it right in the first place. You see, good programming practice is good programming practice. Band-Aids are NOT GOOD PROGRAMMING PRACTICE. Not sorry about the screaming. I worked in computers for 30+ years. I was trained and also taught myself and taught classes about good programming practice. And what CHIRP is trying to do with this Band-Aid is just plain wrong. If you can set something on, you must be able to set it off, too. As I said. If I had produced something like this and put it out to the field, I would have been fired! Now it is time that someone, somewhere in the organization realized that there HAS to be a NONE selection to turn off a PL or any other selection that is no longer needed or was entered by mistake. And as far as I can tell, that is not possible since there is no NONE selection. Am I wrong? If so, I apologize in advance and await another tongue lashing. Thanks to all for all the hard work but someone missed a standard design point on multiple of the columns. Mike

[chirp_users] Win 8.1 and prolific driver and Baofeng UV 82

I was able to use my cable with the counterfeit chip and the correct driver while using Win 8. Everything worked fine. I upgraded to 8.1 and now the wrong driver keeps coming back even when I update the driver. I can delete and or upgrade, still the same even rebooting, even turning off auto updates. The correct driver will show up, without the exclamation mark, and within seconds of plugging in the cable, the screen will flash 2 or 3 times and the driver will show up with the exclamation mark. Any thoughts?

Hello all, I have a new Yaesu VX-3 and I am currently failing to get Chirp to read the download from the radio. I have a laptop with a real serial port running Linux Mint 17, connecting to the VX-3 by serial cable. I can start a download from the radio and Chirp appears to be receiving it with a moving progress bar but, at the final moment of download, when the radio completes its send I get the following error from Chirp: "Failed to communicate with the radio: Received incomplete image from radio" I get this error on Chirp versions 0.3.1 and 0.4.0 Forgive me if this has been asked before, I think I've searched everywhere I can and I've looked over the last 6 months archive of the mailing list for relevant thread titles. The closest I found was this open issue on a Yaesu VX-8: http://chirp.danplanet.com/issues/1511 The VX-3 has obviously been around for some time so I'm hoping this issue has come up before and someone can point me in the right direction...? Rolan, W3FDK here, I used the speaker jack to 9 pin D connector to serial to USB (FTDI ) and turned on the radio and on Chirp > Radio and selected Icom and auto detect and it downloaded the memory data. The IC2200H screen displayed CL OUT then back to normal display after download and all the memories and DSTAR data was there as far as I could tell. Maybe what was described in the trouble query is for rig to rig clone? We use 88.5 on some repeaters locally and having the "no setting" setting the same as "in use setting" both be 88.5 is confusing for a quick look at the grid. I got confused, myself, when going through the grid and had to go back to he repeater book to figure out if these were really in use or not. One used two different tones and one was 88.5 and, once again, I had to go back and double check and make sure if this was in use or "no tone". I would also like to see a NONE setting in the Tone columns for a more positive indication that there is no tone used here. [chirp_users] CT2 Yaesu 7800 with TTL2USB CT2 lead

Hi all, I have a TTL2USB CT2 programmer and leads for the 7800, and am getting the following problem. I can copy the data from the radio to chirp, but it fails to upload, giving an error message , either a fail or a bad memory lock message. Anyone else experience with using the CT2 with Chirp? [chirp_users] VX-7R Issues

Hello, First, I am a lurker who reads almost every posts and who appreciates Chirp in the infrequent times that I need to reprogram my HTs. Thanks to all for your hard work, My current issue is I am reprogramming a friend's radios (1 Yaesu VX-7R and 2 Baofeng UV-5Rs). My template was an .img file for my Baofeng UV-5Rs. I have an identical one for my Yaesu VX-6Rs. Reprogramming the Baofengs went perfectly but the VX-7R is driving me nuts. As a bit of background, we are bicycle race officials and work off of MURS channels. We like to have a full set of FRS/GMRS on our radios in reserve. So what has happened is on my VX-6R I see the MODE is set for NFM. Chirp will not accept this setting for the VX-7R so I changed it to FM before uploading it. Now on those frequencies set as ###.####, The VX-7R transmits a constant noise that sounds like an old telephone ring with a muffled ringer. It is unusable. However if I manually program the frequency in VFO mode it works great. I have attached all three .img files in hopes that someone will point me in the right direction. BTW, while trying to figure this out myself, I tried using AUTO in the MODE dropdown. The FM would flash then stay but at the very bottom of the input matrix a new LOC 1 would appear with AUTO but that line is greyed out. I saved the image and reloaded it and then Loc 1 showed AUTO but was still greyed out. The old Loc 1 was gone. This does not seem to be normal behavior. BTW, I am using Chirp Daily-20140719 on a Xubuntu netbook. had the same result using 0.4.0 on the netbook. I just tried it on a Win 8 box and it looks good (line with AUTO is not greyed out) but I'm not going to take the time to install the correct driver on a machine that will never travel with me to a bike race. There seem to be several settings for the BaoFeng F8+ radio that are of not particular consequence. One that has been confusing me is the “Tone Mode” Doesn’t seem to work on “Tone.” Should I be doing “TSQL” instead? or what? Is there somewhere I can get an explanation of the various settings needed to program the radio. The template is quite different from the sample I have from a friend with another model. Any ideas? Wow, lots of antidotal information. How about a simple explanation of the science. When a radio transmits, it emits a signal that can be received by another radio. In most radio receivers there is a circuit called "squelch". This circuit works by requiring a small amount of electrical energy to be present, before the receiving radio's speaker will be turned on. This keeps unwanted static from being heard all the time. Thus, squelch off.....static....squelch on....no static. If a signal is weak, open the squelch and listen to the weak signal. If the signal is strong, increase squelch and this will limit any signals ability to open the receiving radio's speaker....even to the point that it cannot be opened at all. Now..."Tone and Tone Squelch", add a circuit to the receiving radio that expects a certain sub-audible or digital signal riding along the transmitted radio signal before it will open up the speaker at all. This is what CTSS, PL, DPL, TONE SQUELCH and some other digital signaling circuits do. They set a requirement for that extra signal to be present, before the receiver will open up the speaker. Now, with that understood, you should not have too much trouble understanding how the transmitter radio works within any variant of this system. The transmitter must be set to emit the required tone, sub-audible tone, or digital signal that a receiver is expecting to hear, in order to enable the receiver's speaker. So, if I want to transmit using a repeater (which is a receiver coupled to a simultaneously transmitting transmitter) and that repeater's receiver is expecting to hear a particular sub-audible, or digital tone before it will open up it's receiver, then I must set my radio to transmit that tone in order to enable the repeater to hear my signal. Also, most repeaters transmit tones as well, so I can set my radio to require a particular signal before it will open up and allow me to hear the audio across my radio from the other radio, or repeater. This is good when some repeaters (or any transmitters) are close enough to each other that they occasionally (and un-wantedly) hear each other's transmissions. This type of tone encoding and decoding, using several, and sometimes multiple different methods gives the user many methods of controlling what they hear on the receiving radio. Of note, for clarity,I used the word "speaker" above, when in actuality, the limiting circuit can be in many different places within the receiving radio's audio circuit. Also, please note, there are as many different ways to use these methods as you can imagine......and I have not even touched 'DTMF' Hope this helps. Kenny KC4OJS Sent from my iPad

There are a few "variants" of the Wouxun UV-8D already out there - and now Powerwerx has received a new FCC ID number for a model with even newer features/firmware. This might be a case of "What works for some units may not work for others." This occurred with a Puxing model of two last year: You use the "newest software" and brick a radio ... Hi; I know its out of the ham frequency bands, but I am allowed to use these bands. My problem is that the UV-5R will key up the transmitter but no audio will be sent. I use chirp to program the radio, in simplex mode? No tone, freq offsets 0.0 and the frequencys are correct. Any idea what I am doing wrong? It works (xmit and receive) with ham frequencies

ok, I had no choice but to try windows and jaws (again) to see if I could program my radios. so, I started with the latest daily build and installed it. then I tried to run it only to get a blank opening window. None of the alt keys for the various commonly used pulldown menu items would work. It sat there being as blank as a sheet of unused paper and was unresponsive to any command (including the enter key). Now, I use jaws and windows 7 here (like I have any choice) and because my computer has no display screen, there wasn't any visual help to get around this. So, I ask (again), how can the blind ham use this program in windows with jaws. Before anyone asks, I don't have any of my other machines here. Both were subjected to a massive power surge after one of the recent monsoon storms (direct hit to the power lines outside has a tendency to do that). what information I was able to find (via google) with regard to using this program on windows is, at best, lacking. Unfortunately, the software provided by the various chinese radio manufacturers is just as unusable. so, I ask (again) that the developer look at this as a much needed feature request and to please get it implemented. Basically, I would like to be able to use the software the same as anyone else (that being without someone to assist me). To that end, I am asking that this be done. BTW< are there any jaws scripts that are designed to work with chirp? thanks, -eric

I think I saw that it was coming. It there any way to get an estimate. The software that comes with the radio is fairly horrible. It has not decided to ignore all input so I cannot change the channels from the PC for now. Reinstall did not good. Will try a different computer next. New to the list, been using Chirp for a while on 7 x UV-5Rs, I recently purchased a Tonfa (www.qztonga.com) TF-Q5 radio. The software for programming the radios is available from their website and works ok, however there is no ability to import from another source (ie anything I can spit out of Chirp). Has anybody used these radios with Chirp ? If not if I sample the coms traffic between the software and the radio can somebody identify the radio spec that I need to use in Chirp to get it to work / have it added ? Shane Australia ?

To Whom It May Concern: I purchased two BaoFeng BF-F8+ radios and the cable, but I am unable to download the radio with Chirp. I have several questions concerning it. Allow me to outline what I have done. I m attempting to program my radio with an iMac computer running Mavericks. 1. I downloaded the KK7DS Python Runtime R10.pkg (as instructed) 2. I downloaded the Chirp 0.4.0 software 3. I connected my BaoFeng BF-F8+ radio to the computer with the cable purchased with the radio as directed by chirp. (Manufactured by Pofung) 4. The first sign of a problem is the identification of the “serial port” that comes up in chirp. There are only two options. They are (1) “/dev/cu.Bluetooth-Incoming -Port” and “dev/cu.Bluetooth-Modem” Neither of them work for me. The second own produces an immediate error message that says “An error has occurred could not open port /dev/cu.Bluegooth-Modem: [Errno 16] Resource busy: ‘/dev/cu.Bluetooth-Modem’” The first option begins the cloning process (as expected, but showing NO progress) and then produces an error message that says: “An error has occurred Radio did not respond” I have tried this on both of the BaoFeng radios I purchased with identical results. Hi, I am new to Chrip, and am loving how easy it is to program using this great software. However I am having a problem when using it with my Kenwood TH-K2AT. (I am having great results when using it with The TH-K2 has 100 memory channels, or 50 if you use alpha tags. I don't use the alpha tags, and have almost all 100 memories full. Here is my problem: when reading from the radio, Chirp will only read the first 50 channels. Any attempt to change the values in the "Memories Memory Range" is immediately changed back to 50 channels. There doesn't seem to be any way to get Chirp to read all the channels. I apologize if this has already been addressed. I did a search on the Chirp web site, as well as searching Google, and didn't find anything. 73, Jim

I have a TYT TH-UVF1 dual band handheld and it is supposed to be able to have access to expanded frequencies 136-174 and 400-480. I would like to be able to use for the GMRS which I also have a license for. I was told that the CHIRP software will allow to program these frequencies and it has done so but the radio still will not transmit outside of the amateur bands and I do not receive on the public safety frequencies which I would like to monitor since I am a firefighter and paramedic. If anyone has some advice, it would be appreciated. David

Hi I have several Baofeng radios, most recently added a UV82 (which has a dual PTT button on the radio) On the others when the lapel/speaker mic is connected and the mic PTT is keyed the radio transmits on the currently selected channel either top or bottom. On the UV82 (lapel/speaker mic is not a dual PTT) it *always* seems to transmit on the bottom channel. I've trawled the menus and settings but cant see anything that might control this behaviour. If anyone knows how to change this I'd be very grateful. Trying to use chirp to program new HTs. Reads radio ok, but error message of radio won't respond to write to radio. Happens on both radios. If I use the VIP software (talk about convoluted!) it will write to the radio. I just did 1 local repeater channel thru VIP so see if it would work. Any thoughts or ideas I can try? OK, I’m officially PO’d. I have 4 UV-5R radios. I bought 2 and used chirp to program them. Although I had some difficulty I was able to do it using a ‘kenwood’ cable that a friend had. Now that I’ve bought 2 more I absolutely, positively cannot get them to connect. Sometimes they upload to the program but I cannot download the new set of frequencies. I get so frustrated and mad when I try to do this. It’s so arbitrary and is NOT reliable. Does anyone have any suggestions that might work for me? I’ve made sure the cables are connected properly (otherwise they shouldn’t upload in the first place) but why can’t I get the frets downloaded? [chirp_users] Yeasu FT-60R Issue

Pardon me if this has already been asked and answered. Last night I cloned my FT-60 with the repeaters in St. Louis from Repeaterbook.com with CHIRP. The frequencies that we're programmed manually work fine. When I try to key the mike on the new frequencies, all I get is "error". Any suggestions? [chirp_users] CHIRP and the Baofengs

Hi, I am having problems programming frequencies into my Baofeng UV-5R. It will take some of the higher ones, but won't upload the low ones. They appear on the CHIRP program, but when they upload, they change to random higher freq. Is it a setting I hope? Thanks, FD

Thanks guys I had been trying to use the stand alone and it would come up and count down and then blank screen but after reading these last group I downloaded the install one and downloaded the old Prolific driver and it works great. [chirp_users] Can't connect to CHIRP

I just purchased a new UV-5R. I have downloaded the latest version of CHIRP. The first time I plugged in my cable from the UV-5R to the usb port on my PC, running Win 7,the computer downloaded a serial driver for the cable and indicated that the driver was installed and is now available. I turned on the radio while holding down the "3" key,I received a message that the firmware release is BFB297. I turned the radio off. I plugged in the cable. Then I selected "Radio" in CHIRP. Then I selected the Baofeng UV-5R and com 3. After a few moments I get an error message "Radio did not respond". I tried again, using com 5 with the same result. What do I do now? I'm trying to clone the radio so that I can find the firmware release number. Bob

To program my radios, I had to find the right COM PORT on my computer. WOW that is weird. CHIRP will unzip its files in one directory along with its sub directories. This is one program CHIPRW that is the executable program. I think it also created the start on the main screen. I am now trying to get my computer to recognize my Baofeng, but I think that is a hardware problem. I have made 3 disks and they all work on the win 7 machine. The xp machine doesn't have a usb boot just reads them. Have tried to use plop but doesn't boot either. Did find that after leaving the xp on all night it had booted to the chirp program but hadn't done so after 3 hours so don't know how long it took or why so long. Thanks Hub W5GYX

I don't know if that was Paul answering me or not as I can't get a screen to download anything. When the live cd boots all I get is a blinking ( -) in the upper left corner and I have left it there for over an hour and nothing. Everything just stops. This is on an old laptop I would like to take with me if a radio needs to be programed. The live cd boots up just fine on my win 7 and programs and saves just fine but sure would like to use the laptop. Hub

I just started using CHIRP to program my Yaesu VX-7R. I used CHIRP recently with a Baofeng UV5R and noticed that there was tab to change the radio settings. I don't see this tab for the VX-7R. Am i missing something, or is this capability just not in CHIRP for the VX-7R? Richard AE6XO

Hi everyone, I'm new to the list. I downloaded CHIRP to use with my BaoFeng UV5 because programming it is a beast using the radio itself. I am totally blind and use a screen reader called JAWS that verbalizes what's on the screen. I use the keyboard, not the mouse, for all computer operations because the mouse is totally a visual interface. When I tried to use CHIRP, I discovered that there seems to be no way to access any of the menus or menu commands via keyboard. Does anyone have any suggestions, tips, etc for how to do this? It may not be possible, but before I abandon it totally, I thought I'd send a query to see what's out there. Thanks. Catherine KE4LAM

I am new to Chirp and am trying to get the bootable disk I made to load but all I get is a blank screen. I saw in in the question list this same thing and said it was in the letters but I just started and don't know where to go to find this information. I made a clean install of XP on my laptop and going to use it just for programming radios. It is an old machine. Hub
