I have been using one of the 6-in-1 programming cables with the counterfeit Prolific chip in it. After reading John Miklor's article about using the CP2102 in place of the Prolific counterfeit I replace the chip with the CP2102. The cable works perfectly with the UV-5R radios but no longer works with the Yaesu FT-60. It is the same with my MacBook Pro or if I use FT-60 commander. I thought before I start spending several hours chasing this down I would ask if anyone else has run into this. Thanks, -- <nv7vham(a)gmail.com>

OK, after some more playing around, I think in my case the problem is indeed mechanical. I have 2 cables. The one that came with the radio and a Baofeng branded one I bought when I couldn't get the first one to work with the Mac. I now think the original issue was not having the right Prolific chip drivers, but as I then changed the cable as well, *that* became the problem. Going back to my original cable, and it works every time. (Except after first plugging in - seems that until Chirp has tried to communicate the ports are in the wrong configuration, and it opens up the mic.) So my - so far - way of working is: Plug cable into USB Launch Chirp Try to download - this will fail Plug cable into radio (while it is off) and then turn radio on Now download (or upload, I guess - not tried yet) seems to work fine. I can turn the radio off/on and it will still load. I had attached pics of the 2 cables to show the difference but the list rejected the email :( Basically, one of them has better clearance on the casing around the sockets - and that's the one that works. [chirp_users] Baofeng Radio

I just bought some additional Baofeng radios (BF-F9 V2+) and am trying to program them using the latest Daily Build Chirp software. I downloaded from my old radio but when I uploaded to my new radio the labels did not come through. Am I missing something? Someone else programmed my original radio and I don't know what software they used. Everything else seems to work okay. It is just the labels that are missing. Dave Sunde KG7RYA

Hi There, love your work, I am new to ham radio. I have just purchased a TYT TH-9800 I have managed to make chirp work via my windows PC but I would like to use it on my mac book air. I have down loaded the latest version but it does not show the th-9800 in the drop down box. I have been trying to understand what 'daily builds' are but am lost with that one. I also saw that you say that there are some issues with Mac (surprise surprise) Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am planning on getting several other radios soon, if this software is a usefull as it appears I will be more than happy to donate to assist you with your good work. Hi, Just installed Chirp on Ubuntu 14.04 and can't get it to read anything from the radio. I have confirmed the cable works, both the RS-92 software and the Windows version of Chirp running in Wine can talk to the radio 100%. The USB to Serial cable is a genuine chip, not one of the fakes and works in Windows and Linux just not with the Ubuntu version of Chirp. It has also been used with the Icom Android app on a tablet and phone. All lines have Error in the Name field and no data is shown from the radio in any cell. Also, there doesn't appear to be any communication with the radio as the light on the adaptor doesn't light at any time. It lights when RS-92 is talking to the radio and when the Windows version of Chirp is talking to the radio. The com port is /dev/ttyUSB0, working with the other software but not with Chirp Ubuntu. It has been my experience that the number of channels displayed will stay to the max for the radio if you do the following: 1 Download from the radio 2 Change displayed channels to "Show Empty" (optional) 3 Set number of channels to max number for the radio 4 Save the configuration to .img file Now whenever I open that .img file it always displays them all. If I have Chirp set to display Empty Channels, upon opening an existing radio file, it only displays the first 25 channels. Is there any way to change the Memory Range default to all channels? Having to change it manually gets old after a while. Thanks, Bill WB4WTN

Yes a loaner- they can;t afford to buy all the different radios. But they need something to reverse engineer, so if you want CHIRP to do it they have to have one to work with. Hi I reprogrammed a UV5RA radio with the latest CHIRP, and the audio quit for received signals. Audio works fine for button beeps, turn on beeps, and if you hold down the monitor button. Audio works once in a while for a received signal, but very infrequently. I tried the Miklor factory reset using the original factory image file, no good. Radio has N5R2401 firmware, BFB297 software, says 141206N for the start up. Loaded chirp 20150714, loaded N5R2401 factory image, uploaded to radio. Loaded chirp 20151013, downloaded radio, copied frequency info over, no audio for reception. Speaker works fine for any beeps, same with a speaker mike that works great on another radio. Any ideas? Hi I have a Puxing 777 that Chirp will download from the radio, and upload to the radio. I cannot make any changes to existing frequencies, as Chirp give a message that the frequency is out of range. I've never used CHIRP and I am very confused. I just purchased a JT270M and can read from radio to CHIRP, but not write CHIRP to the radio. Jetstream advised me that CHIRP and the 270M will not work with WIN 10. I will not get into the quality of support from them in this section. I do have a machine with WIN7 on it and I get the same issue. I did get the VV898 software to load the 270 M ( 1 test freq)but with errors (No ALPHA Tag). Jetstream suggested a different prolific driver, but as of yet, nothing has been offered to me from them to use. I am fair with computers, and I wish to determine the following: 1) Which OS to use 2) Which driver do I use for the prolific driver (USB w/chipset) 3) Any other suggestions that you may have. What is the status of CHIRP relative to these radios and what cables are recommended to effectuate programming? I did look on the Wiki and FAQ and saw no reference to cables for ID-51A style radios. I own an OPC-478 (serial cable) - though would buy an OPC-478USB I also own an RT Systems cable for the 91AD also. I'm using a TYT 9800, which supports 66-80MHz, I think. I've been trying to set frequencies within this range, but CHIRP complains that they are out of supported range. I'm guessing that msg comes from CHIRP, not the radio, since it isn't connected at the time. Regards, SR

I have the baefeng BF-F8HP. I have downloaded the CHIRPS and i am trying to download from the radio but it is not reconizing the radio. Any ideas? I tried all the Baefeng radios listed. I did get a different error on the uv-3r i think it was, the last one on list that said it failed first step. All the others say radio did not respond. Anybody have any ideas.

can't down load from radio. daily build 20151009 installed on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS ((failed to communicate with radio: device reports readiness to read but returned no dada (device disconnected?)) Error no other code numbers. I get this wile trying to download from a BF-F8HP and a FT1D This problem left the BF-HP as it was before the attempt to download and wiped the memory on the FT1D I tryed the same cables and radios on a different computer with windows vista and chirp build 20150405 programming worked on both units. not sure if I'm missing something or if this a chirp problem. I'd Like to try back dating to 20151009 on the Ubuntu unit. can someone give me the terminal command line to back date chirp. or any other help would be appreciated. thanks, Nick

Hi Everyone: Just wondering if anyone has encountered a problem when trying to have Chirp recognize the Baofeng UV-5R (high power version) 7 watts handheld? I purchased one of these 2 days ago and have not been able to get Chirp to recognize it. It keeps saying that I have “Chosen the wrong model number” from the list of radios that the software recognizes. BUT I have been using the UV-5R setting?? The firmware version from the transceiver is BFP3-25. I have downloaded the latest daily version of Chirp chirp-daily-20151009-installer.exe and still have the same problem. I have Baofeng UV82 and I am using Mac OS X Yosemite (10.10.5). The CHIRP give me error saying Radio did not respond. The cable is original Baofeng. I was recently given an AnyTone AT-5189 2-meter mobile rig, Has anyone had any experience with this radio, and has anyone managed to configure it with Chirp? Wanted to pass along that i ran into a problem with Chirp (more specifically the prolific drivers for my cords), when installed the new version of El Capitan. Found my drivers were no longer working and had to download new drivers. went to the prolific page at http://www.prolific.com.tw/US/ShowProduct.aspx?p_id=229&pcid=41 <http://www.prolific.com.tw/US/ShowProduct.aspx?p_id=229&pcid=41> and it provided exact instructions for how to get it fixed. I am new to Linux (Linux Mint 17.2 and Zorin 9.0). I have installed CHIRP on both computers. But I am unable to download from my Baofeng UV-3R or Baofeng UV-5R. In each case it appears it does not find, or allow me access to, the Com Port ttyS0, or any port for that matter. Probably something simple I do not know about being new to Linux. Jim, Dave and others who responded. I did what you said, but when I go to add dialout it asks for a Group name to be inserted. What exactly is a "Group name"? It's asking for some combination of lower case letters and numbers. Not sure what to put in there for a Group name. I also tried using terminal without success. I typed in sudo usermod -a -G dialout USERNAME. Are there spaces between usermod and -a-G username? I tried with and without spaces, then ran id USERNAME but still could not find dia on the list. Something basic here I'm still not in tune with. More advice please??? Folks: I'm a bit puzzled. I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I followed instructions for adding the repositories and pulling and installing CHIRP (which is a very nice bit of work). But I am unable to install the daily builds. Here are the errors I receive: sudo apt-get install chirp-daily Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Once you have uploaded from the radio (or loaded a saved image from the model you are using) you can disable transmit by: 1 - click "Settings" on the extreme left (There is a column that says "Memories" and "Settings" - click on Settings) 2 - click on "Other Settings" in the second menu column 3 - Change the VHF and UHF frequency limits as desired (e.g. 144-148 and 420-450) You can disable transmit all together by unchecking the boxes next to VHF and UHF "TX Enable" KW9WR Bill

Hello: I recently repaired my KG-UV3D by replacing the memory chip using the procedure described at http://tim-yvonne.com/ham/wouxun-memory/index.htm I am having the problem that the radio apparently has reset itself to the other band as when I attempt to use the Wouxon software I am now getting a Channel Message 1 Out of Range message. Is there a rescue image that I can use to reset this radio back to factory defaults? The web page listed above list 2 image files but they are for a KG-UVD1P. Hi all I have a Pofung BF-F9+TP which I am having problems with. I can't access the local repeater even though the rig seems to be set up correctly. It's transmitting on the correct input frequency, but it won't open the repeater, even though it's on the same settings as my UV-5R which works just fine. I suspect I may have got something wrong during programming and, like an idiot, I forgot to get a nice clean copy of the software when it first arrived. Does anyone have a known-good image for firmware N5R3401 - BFP3-25, preferably one that is known to work with a repeater? Douglas Yates

What would be causing the chirp windows download version to not allow writing from chirp to Baofeng...only will write from Baofeng to chirp. It's like that option is dead...meaning shows up in ghost type on computer screen where everything else is in bold type. Thanks, John

I'm a newby to the group ... not having any problems using the software with my Baofeng UV-B5, but I can not download my Yaesu VX-6R to the software. Once I press the band button to begin the download , a few seconds go by LCD reads out ERROR. I don't see any obvious VX-6R problems listed ... but can anybody confirm that the current build is working fine with the VX-6R? Or do I have a cable problem? Using Windows 7 and the driver is working fine for the other radio. So I either have a Vx-6R cable problem ... likely is a counterfeit Prolific chip in it ... OR WHAT ELSE? Any thoughts? Hi, I have a brand new UV-82HP. I connected it with the cable, and the cable loaded the USB Serial driver automatically. When I plug the radio in, the computer sees it on COM4. This is on Windows 8.1. I'm running the latest version of CHIRP, 20150814. The radio's firmware is US2S35. Anyway, when I try to download from the radio, I get this message: "Radio refused to send block 0x1ec0". The display on the radio seems to reset when I do this. I'm not sure what to try next.The cable is plugged in securely. Any ideas what to do? Thanks!

I tried the selecting each one on the list (I the hope it might see it as BF-F8HP) and as I am sure you know, it did not work.

Hi All I have had Chirp for quite a few years but don't let that fool you, I know nothing about it. I purchased two Baofeng UV-5R+Plus radios a while ago and a friend used Chirp to clone his radio and then to set my two up. I have used it a few times as I have recommended the Baofeng radios to others and then I have used Chirp to clone mine and set theirs up. I am not sure what has happened but I have updated to a Toshiba laptop, I've just updated that to Windows 10, and I downloaded the latest Chirp today. It's been a while since I last used Chirp and a friend has just purchased two Baofeng UV-5RTP radios and asked me to set them up. When I opened Chirp I opened my radio image file and connected the new radio. I get a COM 5 port error and that's it. I tried hooking my radio up but get the same error. Not sure whether it's relevant but I used the same original data cable as I did for my, and others, radios. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Mick.

I just got a Baofeng UV-5R5 radio and Baofeng UV-5R Programming Cable. I installed CHIRP 20150814 and Prolific v3.2.0.0 drivers. When I try to "Download From Radio", I get "An error has occurred - Radio did not respond". I hope CHIRP supports the UV-5R5 because the Baofeng software appears to be in Chinese. Every character displays as a "?" so I don't know if there's a way to switch it to English. Rachel Carr KG5HUX

Subject: ICOM IC-T8A programming bug #1899 To: chirp_users(a)intrepid.danplanet.com After some research on the Chirp website, it appears that I am having the same issues with programming my two ICOM radios as was described a year ago in Bug #1899. It doesn't appear that this bug has been addressed yet. Specifically, if a frequency such as 146.7250 Mhz is entered into the Chirp frequency list and uploaded to the radio, it appears as 146.7225. In other words, the Chirp frequency list doesn't match the actual programmed frequency. It is offset 2.5 Khz. Another frequency, such as 447.440, will program correctly, so the problem seems to be related to having a number in the 3rd digit to the right of the decimal point. It doesn't matter whether VHF or UHF. Both radios have the MARS/CAP mod, and both behave the same. If I then download the incorrect radio frequencies from the radio back to the Chirp frequency list, all of the incorrect frequencies come back corrected to their proper values, just as if the upload worked perfectly. If a GMRS frequency with 4 digits to the right of the decimal point is entered, it will also upload correctly. The same software is used to program a Baofeng UV-5RA with the same frequency list and it works perfectly. I have tried both the older 0.4.0 and the newer 0.4.1 software versions. Any chance this bug can be fixed or that someone has found a workaround? Thanks for your help! Walt

I had one follow up question/clarification to this. I thought my UV5-R+ 'design flaw' of automatically changing the transmit channel was the most irritating issue with the radio, anyway glad to hear Baofeng resolved it in later firmware and my new BF-F8HP works as I thought my UV5R originally should. My question is can the firmware be updated on the UV5-R to a more current revision to resolve this issue? I recently purchased a new Baofeng BF-F8HP radio, and an FTDI cable from AnyTone. No matter what software or drivers I use, and no matter which Com Ports I use, I get the same warning [ "An error has occurred, could not open port Com XXX: [Error 5] Access is denied."] and am unable to connect to the radio. I have tried this on both my Win 7 Pro and my Win 10 machines with exactly the same results. I also have noticed that no matter what Com Port I choose, I get a message that some other application is already using it [I have tried ports all the way from 14 into the low 100's], which of course, I can hardly believe. Any help would be much appreciated. Mark

[chirp_users] UV 5R use on Public Service VHF

My wife and I are both long time Hams and First Responders. We have permission to use radios on both county and city police and fire departments in a limited way. However we must provide our own radios. It reads like the UV 5R could possibly do this on VHF analog repeaters. I think their is more programming steps that must be done in order to make it possible. An example freq as xmitted by my county repeater is 155.655. There are several others. [chirp_users] MacOS USB connection problems with Yosemite (10.10.5) and a Wouxun KG-UVD1P

Hello, Everyone. I am a brand new chirp user. As it is described in the Subject line, I am trying to connect to a Wouxun KG-UVD1P using chirp. When I attempt to download from the radio, I only have access to two Bluetooth ports. I am unable to access either of the two USB ports on this MacBook Pro. I am using what appears to be the official Wouxun USB cable I ordered for Amazon. I checked the relevant chirp pages and all I see are solutions for MacOS versions 10.9 and earlier. I am using MacOS 10.10.5 Any ideas about how I can access the USB port or current driver that will enable me to access my radio? Thanks in advance. Ed Lomax (e_lomax(a)yahoo.com)

I recently purchased a TYT TH-9000D. My understanding is that this is the Dual Band version (VHF/UHF) I've tried using the recent daily build to communicate with the radio, but every time I do I receive an "unsupported device" error. There are 3 types of TH-9000 listed and I believe these are for the single band models. Is there specific support for the D model? It's mentioned on the website but I think it may just be the regular TH-9000. Thanks for any help anyone can provide. -SP

I need some ideas here. I have a Baofeng UV82L that I program with Chirp and have no problem cloning this for the various UV5? radios that people have around here. I'm comfortable with Chirp. Recently purchased a TYT 9800; I have no problem programming that from the front panel, but I'm a computer junky and it's normally easier to enter / fix radio data programmatically. Running Windows 10, updated; have a cable that claims to be a TYT (the label on the cable); when plugged in device manager reports "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" The Prolific 3.2.0.0 driver announces itself as being available on com 4 when the Baofeng cable is plugged in; however I see no com ports available for the TYT - I have not been able to get either the driver that came with the disk or the one available fro Grapevine (retailer in Dallas) to install. Any comments / suggestions would be appreciated. I'm at a loss. //al

[chirp_users] How to program null channels

Dear fellow Chirp'ers: I am trying to program in a few channels while leaving some channels blank. I was able to do this with a version of Chirp from 2014 but I recently tried to upload my old .img to a new UV-82 and was met with a firmware incompatibility message. In my new .img I set the channels I want to use (0, 3, and 4) and want the rest of the channels to be completely unavailable (if you are on channel 0 and press the up arrow then you immediately go to 2 having skipped 1). I thought the way to do this was to was to set the frequency to 0.000000 but I get an error message about being out of reference. I also tried to use a CSV file to import and saw just the few channels I need but this didn't result in the radio only having those three channels. I am including a screenshot of my old .img in hopes this can be guiding. I thank you for your time and assistance. Sincerely, B Stone

I have the BaoFeng UV-5R and the BaoFeng BF-F8+ and this problem happens with both radios when I try to program them from CHIRP on my iMac. I just downloaded the new version of CHIRP and it seems to do the frequency programming fine. But I have noticed lately with both the 0.4.0 and 0.4.1 versions, that the Power-On Message that I have programmed, does not come across to the radio. I have menu item 38 on the radio set to msg and the “Message” dialog is set in CHIRP but it does not come across. There may be other things that do not program as well but the radio performs in the few modes that I use so I dont’ know about any other settings. Also, with both versions, after the programming I get an error message “CHIRP quit unexpectedly” and a long list of comments. I have included a screen shot of the first page. Incidentally, clicking “Reopen” does not reopen CHIRP After this happened several times, I re-installed the Python runtime and had the same results. Do I need to un-install the old Python runtime before installing the latest one? Have you got any other ideas? I’ll look forward to your response. Craig Ryan

Dear Members, My friends radio seems to have the dreaded audio blocking problem after another friend tried to program it. I think it has A corrupted Settings . I downloaded the latest daily build and have this information: 1st firmware message: N5R2407 2nd firmware message: BFB297 6+[power-on message: 150425N Using this information I went to KC9HI's listing or factory or rest image files and found: N5R2407(141006N) But no N5R2407(150425N) Does anybody here have the correct image file for this radio or know where I can find it? Am I out in Left field somewhere? Any help or suggestions on how to get this radio back into this world would be appreciated. It is a brand new radio so maybe the factory image lists just have not caught up with the newer Versions. Since I was not the first person to try to upload the channels listing to this radio I Have no idea what was done before me. My IC-V82 doesn't work with Chirp. I am using Chirp for Mac. Works 100% with my Baofeng UV5-R. Chirp uploads from the radio and downloads to the radio until right at the end it says that there was an error and wipes the radio. I have to use a Windows machine to program it. Any ideas/solutions? May I ask how you could tell about the BFB firmware? I would like to confirm I understand what needs done here before I do it. So now I need to actually upload an old build (7-14-2014) into chirp. Then I go to the KC9HI site and click on the F5R3407 BF-F8HP(150319N) (factory) img and that will load the factory image into chirp? (if I don't have the old build loaded this wont work?) and then I need to upload the factory file into radio 1 and then I have to reload the latest chirp build. Do I have that right? [chirp_users] Baofeng - Programming specific RDA1846 codes via Chirp

Hello Everyone, I fellow HAM pointed me to this URL which seems pretty pretty interesting on how to do some advanced things with these inexpensive radios: http://www.elazary.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=50:txrx… In a different article on the same site, the author mentioned he looked at Chirp to do this programming but gave up as it only programs memories and some radio settings: http://www.elazary.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=49:hack… I'm curious if Chirp could actually set some of these low level RDA1846 codes or if it really requires direct programming via I2C? --David KI6ZHD

I have three radios. I used chirp to download an image of the first radio, made a few changes just to practice the process (added some NOAA frequencies), saved that file and uploaded it to radio 1. Changes uploaded fine. I thot' I could use that same fine to upload to the other radios so they would all be set up the same? I downloaded the image of the second radio and saved it, then tried to upload the changed file from the first radio to the second but got this error: An error has occurred. Image not supported by radio: 'XXXXXXX' where each X is actually a rectangular box with an upper case X inside. I saw where someone else had this error and it was noted that the firmware was not the same for the two radios so I checked it and the firmware displayed in the Firmware Message 1 for both downloads is identical: N5R340A So I'm not sure where to go from here. I guess I can recreate all the changes in the download from the second radio (?) but kind of wanted to know what I am doing wrong so the upload of the image from the first radio is not being supported by the second? The file that you need to double-click on to launch CHIRP is "chirpw.exe" so look for "chirpw". I probably should not even be typing this request but I have bought a baofeng f8hp radio and well, I may as well try to use it, so. I was trying to get the chirp software loaded so I can get it setup. I used the daily build install from the CHIRP website. It seemed to run ok but did not give me a desktop icon. I was following the very clear and easy miklor instructions but I have a version of windows that does not provide a start button, neither does it give me an "all programs" selection (don't ask me what version of windows I have because I don't know how to find that either). So I used the "file explorer" option and found the CHIRP folder but I do not see anything to click on to open the software. The folders I see include: etc, lib, locale, share, stock_configs. I have looked around in each of these but do not see any sort of .exe file to open the software. Can someone help me understand what I am missing in this process.
