OK. I get it. I can have any Cross Mode I want, as long as it is Tone>Tone, even if I'm not using a cross mode. And I can have any default PL code I want, as long as it is 88.5. I still have not been able to get Tone Mode (none) for my simplex channels... I looked on many web pages on the CHIRP site for some clues to the design intent and how to use the program, but so far I don't see how... ~R~

I have been unable to program my Icom IC-2100H with Chirp. I am using the recommended FTDI cable for that radio. The time frame in which to trigger the Icom versus Chirp is very short. Can someone provide a step-by-step method to program it?

[chirp_users] BaoFeng UV-82C and CHIRP power question

I have a UV-82C and I can only select either 1Watt or 5Watt output using CHIRP or the factory programming software. Is there some way using CHIRP (or other means) to select 2Watts for MURS or 500mW for FRS frequencies 8 through 14? I'm pretty sure the answer will be "no" because I know the power output selection is embedded in the firmware in the radio. Is there an antenna that will reduce the power output without damaging the radio? Thank you for any information on this subject,Dan

[chirp_users] Wide band vs Narrow Band

I am new to this user forum and not to sure about search the complete discussion. That being said, I do not know if this has been discussed. I am a Canadian resident and the Federal Communications has not regulated portable radios to narrow band. All of the Motorola radios that we have are wide band. I had purchased some radios in the US and had them programed. They were setup as narrow band. Apparently, they did not work with our existing radios so they were reprogrammed as wide band here in Canada. Now the question: When adding a new channel, which column needs to be changed and how to program some frequencies as wide band? Thanks in advance. [chirp_users] BaoFeng UV-82C Problems

Recently I purchased a new BaoFeng UV-82C from Amazon. When I try to load the UV-82C from Chirp, the only selection I get is UV-82. There is no UV-82C in the list. I looked at the Chirp Website and the UV-82C is clearly listed by itself. All the other UV-82 and variants were listed in a separate section. I am using the current version of Chirp, 2016-04-19. The box I received clearly said UV-82C, but on the back of the radio where the battery goes it said UV-82. Is this nomal? Shouldn't the radio say UV-82C? There was a sticker that said it complied with Part 90 of the FCC Rules. Above that it has FCC-ID:ZP5BF-82. In Chirp when I go to SETTINGS, OTHER SETTINGS, I get the following: Firmware Message 1: Ver Firmware Message 2: US2S25 6+Power-On Message 1: 160218N 6+Power-On Message 2: B820001 I don't see UV-82C anywhere in Chirp or the original BaoFeng programming software or on the radio itself. I copied and pasted the list from the Chirp website showing the UV-82C is in a class by itself, but does not show up when I load Chirp to read from the radio. Could I have received a UV-82 by mistake instead of a UV-82C? Any help or clarification on this issue is greatly appreciated. [chirp_users] Chirp display after file is loaded

I did a brief review of the chirp_users list and did not find this subject. That does not mean that it is not there. I am in the middle of replacing my Win 10 computer. I ran chirp-daily-20160215-installer.exe. I then loaded a previous image and everything looked fine - information was shown in all columns. Did something (do not remember what) and then information "disappeared from the display. For example, Tone, DTCS Code, DTCS Rx Code, etc are not showing on the screen. If I select one row and then select properties, everything is listed. As a side note, on the computer that i am replacing, all columns still show up. I uninstalled Chirp, rebooted computer and then ran chirp-daily-20160419-installer.exe. Still having the same result. Hi to all, some news about the patches in the development queue and some other infos. The btech driver (for all supported radios looking similar to the btechs) has a bug about the driver not retrying the identification (aka: the driver does just one attempt) a patch for fixing that is on the queue, the driver will do 3 attempts, all due to a line not being tabulated correctly. (sorry, my fault) That must fix what some user are reporting as "not working in the first try" or "not working from a cold start" A new generation for the BTECH UV-2510+220 was discovered today, if any of you had faced a "Radio identification failed" error with this model you must try the next daily of Chirp that will contain support for this new version, all points that this is a second generation of the BTECH UV-2510+220. *Mental note for you:* If you found a BTECH like radio that is supported on Chirp but it says "Radio identification failed" you may have hit a new variant, go to the chirp forum and left us a issue with a debug.log attached, that will speed up things a lot. (search in the chirp's wiki for "how to report a bug" for instructions) Support for the Sainsonic GT-890 is waiting on the develop queue to be applied also. Some users have experimented problems working the Juentai JT-6188 *Mini* with Chirp, we realize today that there is a new spin on this radios: the Juentai JT-6188 *Plus*. If any of you has this new _Plus_ radio we are willing to work with you for get it supported on chirp, just drop me and email. This is getting the users confused as Chirp listed the JT-6188 *Mini* as a Clone of the QYT KT8900, but the new JT-6188 *Plus* is a totally different radio and is not supported by Chirp yet (this new model has 220Mhz and a fan) -- 73 Pavel CO7WT. That's correct. What I did was install it that way to make sure that all dependencies are met and then download the latest and call it from the terminal. This is pretty sad and maybe a little off topic but .... How do you get these things to go into "Name" mode? I picked up a pair of these to have on hand when my YL and I go on a trip and I CANNOT get them to go into anything but VFO mode. I have them set to "Name" mode in the chirp settings and have tried changing them to Name mode in the menu of the radio and they will not change to anything but VFO. What am I missing? Please enlighten me before I return them.

Either way I just wanted to bring this bit to the table to request a version of CHIRP for ARM. I have installed the FTDI driver for the FT-2900 and see it in Device Manager. I shows in dev mgr and CHiRP software as Com 20. I plug in FTDI cable (from Valley-Ent) the select open then new then go to radio tab and download from radio (which is in clone mode). Several times ago it said in a popup to press ok, then the MW D/MR button briefly. The display says wait, then a popup error says can't read header. I vaguely recall a while back that there were two different button to press. One if reading the radio and another to upload to the radio. Suggestions appreciated. Thank You, Al

A friend has a new one of this radios but there is a problem. The radio will not open the squelch even with setting on 1. There is no tone programmed. Using chirp I get message "An error Occurred" Radio Refuses to enter programing mode when trying to download radio settings. Works OK with ZT-Vrom Miklor. I had software on old computer running Win XP and all worked fine. Now on new computer with Windows 7 we have this problem. I have good driver and good cable. Are others experiencing this problem also using windows 7? Ed Thibedeau

Hello. I don't have the QYT KT8900 radio with 220Mhz yet, but I'm planning on getting one soon. This may help you a little, from my research the QYT KT8900 radio with 220Mhz is model QYT KT8900_R_ (note the "R" on the end). Also the Zastone MP-320 appears to be the exact same radio. These claim that they have a range of 240-260MHz, therefore they do NOT cover the US band of 222-225MHz. I have found this, too, but haven't tried it yet: "Changing the 'PASSWORD' on these is supposed to change the range of the associated band coverage. I have been told to 'hold F and power on, get PASSWORD' and then you could use this to change the 'PASSWORD' which supposedly _actually changes the Rx/Tx range_." So that procedure could be used to change the "222MHz" range from 240-260 to 222-225MHz, /_*IF* it actually works that way!_//_ _/The filters in the QYT KT8900R may not be able to cover 222 though, they may be designed to just cover 240-260. Again, I have not tried this, I just found it on the internet. I have the BTECH MINI UV-2501+220 (haven't tried it yet) and it appears to be the same thing also, except it comes already set up for 210-230MHz instead of 240-260. Maybe the filters are tuned a little differently?? Maybe something else is different also?? Hi All, I had been trying to alter my channel list, (spreadsheet?). Mine is set up with large gaps to be filled in later, not sure if this matters. I found a frequency to which I wanted to add tone SQ, and as soon as I saved it and called it back up, the change was gone. Radio itself was not involved at all. I finally deleted it and made a new entry up near the top of my list, and it saved properly. I cannot find any "lock" feature that would apply for the spreadsheet table, that could be unlocked. The radios won't keep a change on a programmed channel, but that is by design. Any idea why it would not save a tone frequency? Bruce Hinton

I've looked high and low trying to figure this out: Using Chirp I have the tx power set on my radio for each channel. Now my radio won't let me change the tx power via the menu on the radio. It changes initially but reverts back immediately. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I'd like to be able to change power whenever I want to. Thanks

You CAN TEMPORARILY change the power level while in channel mode, but only for the CURRENT session. On my UV-82 while in channel mode, lock off, if I press the "#-Lock" key the radio cycles between H-L. On my UV-82HP while in channel mode, lock off, if I press the "#-Lock" key the radio cycles between H-M-L. Both radios were programmed in CHIRP. As previously stated, this is only a transient power level change. If the channel is changed or the radio powered off/on the power level reverts back to the power level programmed for that channel in CHIRP. The power level does NOT revert back to the programmed setting when transmit is switched between bands and back again. The RTSystems cables changed at some point to cater to their newer generation of software. They stopped identifying as generic FTDI devices and getting assigned a COM port in windows (or tty on UNIX) so that the software could identify the cable and be "more automatic". This is, of course, the opposite of what CHIRP people need. Just because you have one cable that works well doesn't mean they are a good option for people looking for a new cable. I would recommend against them. I disagree. I have four diffrent cables from Rtsystems and have never had any problems. I have their cable for the US 5 series and have programmed over 30 of the Baeofeng for club members and for the local C.E.R.T. and the cable has NEVER failed me. I spent $6.99 on a cable for my BaoFeng handheld, $8.99 on a cable for my Kenwood TM-281 mobile, and $14.99 on a cable for my Yaesu FT-2900R mobile, all from Amazon with free one or two day shipping. Total spent: $30.97. The first two use Prolific chips and the latter uses an FTDI chip. They have worked flawlessly under OS X and Windows 10, requiring no mucking around with drivers or reprogramming of the chips embedded in the cables. I have been maintaining several UV5R's with Chirp for a couple of years without any issues. I am currently running Chirp Daily Build 20151126 on W10 to program several UV5R's. I have recently experienced two strange programming operation issues, with all the UV5R's, that I have not previously encountered. First problem: After downloading the current configuration of the UV5R's, I then proceeded to add some new memory channels that use Digital Coded Squelch settings. When programming the DCS settings, I first set "DTCS", then I set the individual T-DCS and R-DCS codes and then I set Cross to "Tone -> Tone" (as this is what the existing DCS memory channels reflect), but as soon as I set the offset direction, Chirp changes "DTCS" to "Cross" and changes "Tone -> Tone" to "DTCS->". As these settings are not what is required (or at least what is currently reflected in the older DCS memory channels), I then have to go back and reset "DTCS->" to "Tone -> Tone" and "Cross" to "DTCS". Is there any reason why my initial inputs are being over-ridden? Second problem: After successfully uploading a new configuration to the UV5-R's, the UV5R's automatically go into transmit mode about 5 seconds after they restart if the programming cable is left connected to the radio. This seems to be a new issue that I had not previously experienced. Any suggestions on either problem will be greatly appreciated. -- John 73's de K9RSQ

I downloaded current version for Windows and ran the installer. I see CHIRP folder on my desktop, but when I go in, I don't see any application or executable file (except Uninstall and w9xpopen, neither of which launch/start CHIRP). I'm not computer illiterate for heaven's sake but feel like an idiot not seeing what to click to start CHIRP. Thx folks for getting this noobie off the ground!

Thanks for the quick response Jim. Yes Chirp was closed before I executed the install file. The installation confirms install location, and then proceeds to "churn & burn" for several minutes before giving me a successful message. I just repeated the process again to double check .. and this time I noticed that the default install location was not where my 20151126 version had been installed (go figure). Going to the default location I found the 2016 version. So, 1 issue has been resolved. I found through a search that I could push the mono button down to hear. It worked. So I've obviously got a corrupted image or something. I'm new to this and it seems I've ruined this BF-F9V2. I only started using Chirp with the 3/1 build. I have a Prolific cable and a UV-5R (with the carrier squelch issue) on my OSX 10.10 box. I'm using the recommended KK7DS runtime. I installed the 1.6 kext from Prolific, then after discussion with Jim Unroe I grabbed the 2.0 driver from mac-usb-serial.com. When I upload the image that came off my radio, it works fine. When I try to use a "factory reset" image from Jim Unroe (that he personally supplied to me), I get a nasty crash. This is NOT the famous "error" reported by others on a factory reset. Here's the stacktrace from the crash- there's also a snippet of console log in there, which doesn't give anything as an ERROR. I can reproduce this with both the 1.6 and 2.0 drivers (thankfully, they bind to a different /dev location). https://gist.github.com/tedder/96c21d0a87c7c343ebdb What should I do next? 2 Baofeng UV-5R one yellow one black. Tried to clone them by turning on the source (yellow one) while holding down the "mon" key. The black one is connected and on. Lights come on but black one stays in factory default. I can read the yellow one no problems Firmware BFS297 Black one, Firmware BFB297, same cable same chirp same USB port I get, "Radio refused to send block 0x0000" I have programmed dozens of these beasties with no problem. I have programmed Wouxuns, Yaesus, Icoms, no problem but this one's got be beat. I'm using Linux Mint 17.3 so no driver problems. Over to the Gurus, Thanks de VK2BYF Bob

I apologize if this is the wrong place for such a question, but I am restoring an old Windows XP laptop to program my radios in Chirp and the official BaoFeng programming software. The original laptop (2002 Toshiba Satellite) with XP came with no service packs installed. Do I need to install all 3 service packs for the Prolific programming cable (I'm using the XP driver for the prolific cable) to work with Chirp? I tried it with no service packs and Chirp didn't work, it kept telling me to reinstall Chirp but that didn't fix it. The BaoFeng official software seemed to work, I just read from the radio, but did not try writing back to the radio. Right now I have Service Pack 2 installed and I'm gonna give it a try. The laptop is so old that Windows XP Service Pack 3 really slows down the computer drastically. The laptop doesn't have much memory or a very big hard drive. XP with no service packs runs real fast, but slows down more and more as I install the service packs. I'm going to try it with service pack 2 installed. I do not have it connected to the internet so I'm not worried about automatic Windows Driver updates to mess up the Prolific cable. I'm just curious if anyone else has tried the same thing. I've got the FTDI cable on Win10 on my home computer but there's times I want to experiment using the laptop so I can free up my home computer. Thanks,Dan Jolley

folks, thank you all for your input and education! actually, Jim KC9HI was one of the most helpful. i was able to resolve my problem by gg to the mikor site and following the directions to stop win 10 from auto updating the prolific driver; then dnlddg the 3.2.0.0 ver. and getting it installed through dev.mgr.. New CHIRP user. Got everything to work well on my MAC computer with latest Chirp build. Baofeng BF-F9V2+ but connecting with the recommended setting of BF-F8HP. Everythign is working perfectly except my offset settings won’t carry over when I upload the image to my radios. I have the DUPLEX set to either + or - and then type in the offset. Save image. Upload to radios. The radios stay on OFFSET 000.000. Any suggestions? Thanks. Bobby

Hi, Doing some more tinkering I discovered the memories 800 to 849, being read by Chirp as bank A, are actually the band edge scan memory pairs. These are used by the IC-92AD to scan a band of frequencies by setting the upper and lower limits. Some scanners used the term "limit scan". This means they don't have _bank attributes yet Chirp is trying to read bank attributes for them, hence the error: AttributeError: Memory instance has no attribute '_bank So now we know what those extra memories are, Chirp wasn't reading too many, just including the band edge scan memories with bank A. Hopefully this makes it easy to to fix the bug. I did update the bug report with the new finding while I was at it. Running build 20160301 in Ubuntu 14.04 Wenlock VK3YWB

Hi, I'm am a long-time user of VHF radios starting with a VX-150 some 15 years ago and switching to Baofeng UV-5R when they were relatively new. I have been using Chirp to program my UV-5R since I first got the radio. One thing that I find annoying about how Chirp works with repeater splits is that it shows it as a + or a -. Most people I deal with in Canada give me frequency pairs. And I haven't found an easy way to get Chirp to show me the actual frequency (as opposed to the +/-.) When I enter a frequency as a "split", it immediately gets converted to "+/-" and there seems to be no way to get Chirp to show it as a "split". This makes it really hard to confirm that I have the correct frequency entered; I need to do frequency math in my head or paper which increases the likelihood of errors. It would be great if Chirp had a setting that allowed me to say "Always show splits using the format entered" or "Always show splits in: " and let me choose between +/- and "split". If there is a way to do this, please point me to the documentation (I couldn't find any); if there is not, is this already an open issue (I couldn't find one). And if neither is the case, should I go ahead and create a new issue? Thanks, Gerard

I'm new to using Chirp and have hit a stumbling block trying to program my UV5R. I am able to download a *.img file from my radio, ex[port to an Excel *.cvs file, make changes to the Excel file and then export as a *.chirp file, load the *.chirp file into program but am unable to up load the file to my radio. The original file downloaded from the radio is a *.img and I find no options in the Chrip program to export as a *.img file. Holding down the 3 key when turning on the radio displays BFB297. Hi,I've just set up CHIRP and downloaded the memory channel list from my Baofeng UV-5RV2+. I notice that the offsets on my saved channels are not exactly what I expected to see. For the channels where I have set the offset to 000.600 in the radio, it's showing 0.601550 or 0.599890 in CHIRP. For the channels where I have set the offset to 005.000 in the radio, it's showing 5.001550 or 4.999890 in CHIRP. My question is, do I need to make any changes to these offset entries before writing the image back to the radio? Should I fix the entries to show the exact frequencies that I entered in the radio, or are the shifted frequencies correct? As a side note, I see that the default offset for channels that I have not set up are exactly 0.600000. I'm afraid to write an image back to the radio that could cause a problem so I thought it would be best to check first. Thanks.Ed

Do the two different error levels relate to different shift directions? I recently programmed some channels into a UV-5R+ manually and read the memory bank back with Chirp. There was no error in the offsets as read by Chirp. However I cannot use menu 26 to check the offsets in /Channel Mode/ as it always reports zero. I confirm the proper offset by using the reverse function which displays the shift but of course with 1 KHz limited resolution. My firmware version is BFB297. I wonder what firmware version you have? [chirp_users] Chirp won't read CSV files correctly

I have a KG-UV8D. I can use Chirp to read from the radio, and save the image and create a CSV file. But if I modify the CSV file and then try to open it from Chirp, I get various errors. I was able to successfully import 15 memories (plus the default 0 channel the Chirp creates -- don't know what this is), but when Chirp encounters the next line (16th entry) in my CSV file if barfs and says "Mismatched column numbers line 17". I can delete the first 15 rows in my CSV file and create a new series of entries with the second half of my memory list, starting with Channel 16, and it works, until it gets to the 17th line, then issues the error "Mismatched column numbers line 17". Now, I'm certain that import/export has to be a very basic function so I must be doing something wrong any help out there? Chirp version (the only one I can find on the web site) : chirp-daily-20160224-installer.exe Windows 7 Microsoft Excel 2003 I also created an account on your the web site, but cannot login -- I get the message login info invalid-- do I have to wait for an email after creating an account? Hi All,my first post and a new user to Chirp. I would like to program my Yaesu FT60 with various local repeaters and the frequencies for some FM satellites. I am using Windows 8.1, the latest version of Chirp (updated today) and a cable from here Yaesu FT-60 USB Programming CableDownloading from my FT60 is fine. I then edit the file and try to upload. That's when I get the message 'Failed to communicate with radio: Radio did not respond' I have looked at some online documentation and I am aware that for Yaesu radios you need to follow the steps very carefully. These are the steps which i took: - connected my cable to laptop and radio (drivers were installed on first connection) - held MONI button in while switching radio on. Released MONI button.- used selector knob to move to f8 CLONE- Pushed f/w key. Screen blinks- in Chirp - I downloaded from the radio. I checked the correct COM ports in device manager. Download was successful- I edited downloaded file in Chirp- To upload I pressed MONI - RX appeared on the screen.- I attempted to upload to the radio but as soon as I tried this I got the error message - failed to communicate with radio Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on? Any help much appreciated. Hi, I'm Pavel Milanes one of the Chirp developers, I'm developing the driver for the Kenwood TK-790 radio, and found that this radio has a two front versions, one simple with a front speakers and other complex with a lot of buttons and no front speaker. I need help from users with the complex front head, the need is for testing the alpha code of the driver to get an image of this radios to compare if the complex head is identical to the simplex one, if not then to make the pertinent mods to the driver to get support to the two versions. 73

I have been using Chirp for a few years now. Everything was working fine until I downloaded the newest build and driver for my new cable. Please see attached photo. I’m running the latest version Mac OS X with all the lasted updates. I’m trying to program some new Baofeng BF-888S i just received but that doesn’t seem to matter. I have a Baofeng BF-F8 and a Wouxun KG-UV8D. I get this result from all my radios and when I open old saved files. It appears the information is there but the text is missing. Frustrating!! jim, KC9HI it sounds like you have the heart of my problem diagnosed! YES, i do have the 'prolific' cable - as identified by the DEV MGR in both my win 10 and by his win 7 PC - prolific serial - com ! i got headed down the FTDI road by reading about their abuse of drivers in win 10 on this blog. i will definitely take your advice and try to dnld the driver you suggest. i will be certain to report back after i have had the chance to follow your directions. thank you very much for sharing your expertise!! peace, larry KD9AVZ

Greetings, Thanks Jim! Had I noticed the Miklor procedure I probably would have given it a spin. The Miklor procedure offers the advantage of providing a view of all the installed relevant drivers available on the system for a given device. However I do find blazing my own trail sometimes helps me gain a better understanding. This has been a learning process for me as I didn't know until now that there may be multiple driver versions stored on the system for a given USB device. I had the wrong impression that the installation of a new driver overwrote and deleted any older versions. It is nice to know that one can roll back to an older version should a new release have issues. But the deletion of the unwanted drivers offers the convenience of ensuring the desired driver is loaded automatically circumventing the need to make a driver selection on each occasion. It will be interesting to see if the automatic selection of the 3.2.0.0 driver will stick on my system. Having the most recent Prolific driver installed along with the older counterfeit chip friendly version also seems like a good compromise. Presumably the most recent version drivers offer performance advantages thus should be used with genuine Prolific chip devices. It is nice that the port properties driver roll-back feature is easy to access to get back to the 3.2.0.0 driver when needed. I suspect in time with Windows Updates the most recent version will again automatically re-appear on my system. 73 Tom VA7TA --------------------------------------------------------------- You are making this way harder than it needs to be. You don't need to uninstall any drivers. It is better to leave the latest driver installed. If it stays installed, there in no need for Windows to download it. What you do is download, install and then choose the v3.2.0.0 driver. The miklor.com website has a guide for doing this. See steps 6 though 11. http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php As you can see from the attached picture, I have 4 Prolific device drivers installed. I can switch between any of them at will by using Device Manager. By choosing the v3.2.0.0 driver I can use every Prolific based programming cable that I have (genuine chip or not). By choosing any of the newer drivers, I can determine if the Prolific chip is genuine or not (if it stops working, it isn't genuine). Jim KC9HI

[chirp_users] Baofeng UV-5R not working

I have a programmed my uv-5r but for some reason I'm not receiving anything. I have tried several times to program it but it don't seem to pick up any calls from anything. I get all my info for the radio from radio reference and the frequencies. When I get toned out and fire radio goes off my uv-5r just sits there and does nothing. Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?
