I have been trying to program 2 WLN radios supported by chirp and it don't seem to up load DCS tones and when saving the file it does not save the DCS tones ? Max, Since you said that you are very new to programming radios, I would use a transitive method <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transitive_relation> of troubleshooting the issue you are having. I would get the frequency-tone-offset info on a local repeater that is open to the public, and program one of the two radios to tune into that repeater. Once I'm able to hear the repeater on the radio, I would see if I can key-up from the same radio and raise the repeater. Next I would do the same from the second radio. When radio-1 is able to send and receive from the repeater & radio-2 is also able to send & receive from the same repeater, then radio-1 & radio-2 will be able to talk to each other directly if you swap the send & receive frequencies on one of the radios, while making sure that you are using the same DCS <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squelch#DCS> or CTCSS <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuous_Tone-Coded_Squelch_System> settings on both. Based on my limited experience, currently, when you transmit from the ATR-22 & the EVX-531's receive lights up, the receiver is expecting a specific DCS <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squelch#DCS> or CTCSS <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuous_Tone-Coded_Squelch_System> tone that it is not seeing. The ATR-22 is either not transmitting any tone or not the one that the EVX is expecting. [chirp_users] using two different radios together

Hello, I'm trying to get two different radios to talk to one another and I'm running into an issue that I think is due to me never having programmed a radio before! Specifically I'm trying to integrate an Amcrest ATR-22 radio with a Vertex Standard EVX-531. I'm using the CE142 software for programming the 531s and CHIRP for the ATR-22. When I transmit from the ATR-22 the green receiving light comes on the EVX-531 but there's no audio. When I transmit from the 531s there's no receiving light on the ATR. Does anyone have any idea what I'm missing here? I'd really appreciate the help. Thank you! MFH -- MFH

chirp_users(a)intrepid.danplanet.com HI i have a new gt-3tp (in addtion to my uv-r5) i tried using the bf-f8hp as used by others on this radio. but on download it errors with incorrect model selected. i tried reading all in the bf drop down menu and the venerable uv-5r mode was used to be able to read and suprisingly write back to the gt3tp. just lacking the medium power options and possibly more..... it seems to work with the memorys using 5r upload but would be better with the correct means of up/downlodaing. many thanks to you and chirp [😊] [2017-02-13 16:38:24,197] chirp.logger - Hello, First time using CHIRP with a brand new Pofung UV82. Every time I try to Download From Radio regardless of which port from drop down menu i choose), I get this type of message : could not open port /dev/ttyUSB0: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/dev/ttyUSB0' I am pretty certain I am plugged into the port labeled USB0. I have no idea how to change permission access to the port. Any thoughts? Thanks, Charly

ok, Im not really good with computers. I have a yaseu ft 7800 and a hp laptop with no serial ports. I have a ps2 male to ps2 male cable and a ps2 to usb adapter. I had to run a virtual com port program and then chirp. I followed the on screen directions for my radio. I on the radio it says tx for 2 or 3 seconds and then error. the pc says cloneing, then error occured, unabe to communicate with radio. failed to read header (0) Im thinking its my com port. before i used the virtual port i look under device manager and there is no section + ports. oh yea Im using windows xp sp3 media version. Many are just outright returning the radio as a result, assuming it's broken. Since there are a million UV-5R variants and this is likely to get worse, this patch adds a blacklist of similar magic strings from radios that may be confused easily. If we fail to probe the radio that was selected, we can probe for the blacklist magics, and if any reply, raise a specific error to the user indicating that they chose the wrong model. #4539

I select "S" in chirp, but my Yaesu FT-7900 does not skip the channels so selected during scanning. What am I doing wrong? Everything else seems to work as expected.

I would like to use my Boafeng UV-5RA at work. We use the frequency. I can receive transmissions but I cannot transmit. I imported the GMRS frequencies from the Import from stock config menu item in CHIRP, and did not make Any changes to them. Any ideas on what setting I need to change? Baofengs are not Part 95, most are not even Part 90 legal. The Boafengs MUST be used with a license of some sort, Part 97 Amateur or Part 90 Public Safety or business use. The Baeofeng radios are not legal for GMRS. One reason is they have remove able antennas. Hi all, I've been using Chirp with my Baofeng UV-5R+, and it works great. I recently purchased a pair of BF-F9V2+ radios. I've attempted to perform Radio -> Download from radio, and select a Baofeng BF-F8HP. This seems to work. However, according to this issue, this specific type of radio should be supported. http://chirp.danplanet.com/issues/2511 I have the latest nightly, specifically revision 20170210, but this radio is not in my list. I'm using an OS X distribution. Is this the radio option I should be using, or is this radio type missing? Thanks, Todd

Just a follow-up… I took the suggestions offered, tried them without success, then ordered the ~$20 “official” cable for the Yaesu line. Yesterday I hooked everything up and was able to successfully download my FT60R to Chirp, add frequencies and parameters, and then save and upload the file back to my HT. Worked great, the FT60R works like a charm. Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond and assist me! Rick R

The point is that there is a feature described both in the Chinglish manual and supported through CHIRP that just isn't working for the 12 handsets I have on the floor in front of me. I am using daily build 2017126 to programme a standard baofeng BF888S. I can change the individual channel power settings through the Power column in the tabular Memories screen which is great. I have verified this actually works with a power meter. However I can't re-designate the Side Key Function as Transmit Power via the Settings screen. It does re-designate that key to the other functions when selected. Is that a software bug or operator error on my part ?

It was. Also after setting the side key function to Transmit Power, it is evident that the factory default Monitor setting is no longer available. Pressing the the side key now either causes the radio to emit 1 beep or 2 beeps. I assume the beeps tell the user what the power level was just switched to. I've checked this on 2 BF-888S radios. The current discussion brings up questions for me. I like to insert one or more FM broadcast stations in the 88-108mhz US FM band. The times I have inserted one of the station in a Chirp image it gets removed when uploaded to the radio. Am I making the entry wrong or will it not store it in one of the 128 memories? Thank you. I hope this is an acceptable question for this list. I don't know any other place to ask for this help. A local county emergency manager has told me about an inexpensive magic ( to me ) dongle type rf reciever that plugs into a usb port. It has a jack for an external antenna. Supposedly this device can recieve a huge amount of frequency spectrum AND trunked systems that also uses p25 digital signals. If anyone has links to this device that would give me the complete info on this thing, I would greatly appreciate you. Yes there is one on the market that was originally intended for use as a European TV receiver but with free software it becomes a very wide band VHF/UHF receiver . There is also a add on board that you can purchase that adds HF capability.. interestingly enough it will work as a spectrum analyzer on a smart phone.. Nice little device. You are incorrect. Ham bands are wide band, 25 hz width compared to 12.5 wide narrow band for public safety/business use. We are not talking audio width, but frequency band width. I appreciate the advice from evetyone. I have tried making the programming changes to my UV-5RA. Unfortunately for me, I still have not been able to pick up anything. First, I setup channel 1 with the following settings for my local First Responders. Freq = 453.575000Tone Mode = TotalTone = 233.6Mode = NFM Second, I tried to setup channel 2 to our local repeater freq., which is 224.8000 with a "-" setting. But I receive the following error message: Error settingmemory: Frequency 224.800000 is out of supported range.Tx Freq 223.200000 is out of supported range As I have stated, I am new to programming scanners and I'm not sure what to do from here.

Many ideas here that could solve your problem. Also, check to see if you enabled a tone squelch option that would not pass the audio unless the proper tone/code is set. For just plain reception, you would not need this.. Just to let everyone know, if you do find an older Yaesu without the FTS-17A CTCSS Tone Board (long unavailable) they are being remanufactured in China, for around $25.00 USD shipped. The same one used in Mobiles and HTs, it was an (expensive) option as few Repeaters used it at the time 20 years ago, most having just switched over from AM to FM Mode and most Ham radios were converted single-channel Crystal radios. Rather expensive to change Channels at around $30.00/pair. No 1.000-channel radios existed then... Regarding the Yaesu FT-1802M, the "M" merely stands for Mobile radio. There may be a difference in the Euro version to the North American one, although usually there is a "E" after the Model name (for European Version). The "A" versions are for the Americas as we have a wider VHF section, same as UHF. I own a FT-3000M which is slightly different in specifications, both being High-Power VHF radios, yours is 50W, mine 65W output. The Euro versions will only TX 144-146 MHz, ours to 148 MHz, and the wide-band modification is quite simple. If you live out in the Countryside, the higher TX output you will really appreciate, just make sure your antenna will handle it and use a 5/8, and please due to the power wire it directly to your Battery or PS. When I try to read the radio it does not identify the model number correctly. It sees that the radio is a Yaesu but the wrong one. I can't tell you if the FT-1802 is any different because I've never touched one. They could be exactly the same. What I would do to test it is manually enter a few memory channels in the FT-1802. Then download into Chirp and make sure those channels are where they're supposed to be (channel 1 is channel 1, etc.) and that all the frequencies and tones are correct. If it all looks good then there's probably no change to the memory layout between FT-1802 and FT-1802M. Looking for some advice I work for a small private security company that is just starting up. For some of our jobs we need radios, so I purchased some Baofeng UV- 5R to use mainly because the price. What is the best way to get the most range from these radios? Thanks Hans

I have tried changing the column headers to match those in the stock files. When I do it seems to recognize the file but it then says no channels found. If I change the location column back to channel it does not recognize the file. Why can't find any channels? Does the order of the column matter? I have saved a frequency list in excel as a csv file. When I try to import it into Chirp it says it does not recognize the file type. I just downloaded Chirp so I have the most current version for windows. Any help would be appreciated. Jeff

Bill I believe what you say is true, but you don't have to change the file you downloaded from the radio. You can upload a different file, one of the stock files in chirp or one you have created. For around 30 bucks they work well. On eBay you can buy a battery eliminator and larger batteries. The larger batteries have a charging port on them but I’m not sure if you can run the radio and charge at the same time. You can get a battery case that holds 6 AA's if you want. I would pick up a programing cable for 10 bucks and use the free "chrip" programing software. I have Baofeng BF-888S plus just bought H.R.G. PC03 FTDI USB Programming Cable for Jingtong, BaoFeng<https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NAQBXK4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?…>. I downloaded the chirp software and wouldlike to know how to program the devices so I don't mess with emergency systems, etc. Sadly, I need extremely straightforward step by step instructions. I have read numerous articles that say Apple did a total rewrite of the USB driver for El Capitan. :-/ For me, updating to El Capitan, definitely broke some USB devices, but not USB to chirp. Hi, I am new to this and trying to program my Yaesu FT60R. I have an iMac running OS 10.12.2 (Sierra). I purchased a 6 in 1 programming cable for the FT60R (among many other models) from Yihao Weiye Electronics Co. LTD, via Amazon. I have installed KK7DS Python Runtime R10 on my Mac. I have tried downloading a few FTDI drivers. I can install and open Chirp-daily 2016-12-20, but not chirp-daily-20170126. When I connect the programming cable to my powered USB hub, System Information recognizes it as: USB Serial Controller product ID: 0x2303 vendor ID: 0x067b (Prolific Tech. Inc) version 3.00 plus other info… I connect radio to computer via cable, power up radio into clone mode, select “download from radio” (both with and without opening new file), then select Yaesu and FT60 from the popup menu, which lists the port as: /dev/cu.SLAB_USBtoUART. I push the PTT key for a second until my radio shows “tx” then release. After a few seconds chirp gives me the message: “An error has occurred, Failed to communicate with radio: Radio is not responding. I've tried this multiple times. [chirp_users] Any tricks to programming Kenwood TM-D700 with Chirp?

Hi Everyone, What does it take to get the DM-700 to cooperate? I have a new USB-63 cable from RT Systems, downloaded the driver first and successfully, but I cannot download any data from the DM-700. Com port is 8. When downloading from radio, when I click 'OK', nothing happens at all. I don't know if this is a clue, but the second time I try to download, I get an error message "could not open port COM8: [Error 5] Access is denied." I have previously used Chirp on a Kenwood TM-V71A, and for a couple of Baofengs. Thanks, Rich Holtman

I have a TYT TH-9800 which does quad band (10, 6, 2, 440) FM that also has AM RX on 118-136 and 27 (but TX FM). It is mobile sized. Hi all, I am new to the radio stuff. I would like to search the messages for an answer. I Bought a Baofeng GT-3TP for my own personal radio to use on a licensed frequency that I use for volunteer work. I am trying to program it with chirp latest nightly on Debian Linux using the BF-F8HP like it says in the wiki but no luck, I get a radio didn't respond error with a Prolific cable and an incorrect Model selected error with a ftdi cable. Is there any suggestions to fix this? It does work using the UV-5R driver but then I only have 2 power modes. My friend bough the same Gt-3TP radio and had a UV-5R previously and he is having the same problem. Thanks in advance. Jason

Have both Baofeng UV-82 and UV-82X. Chirp unable to connect to either. Older driver, 3.2.0. installed. and shows up as working in the device manager. When trying to read from the handhelds I get error message "Could not open port Com 3. [Error 2]. The system cannot find the file specified." Interestingly, the Baofeng supplied software, UV-82 Series Program Software (VIP version), can connect via Com 3, though it usually takes multiple attempts (repetitive communication failures) and will read and write the memories but will not allow me to save any data. Any hints as how to get Chirp to work would be much appreciated. Thank you, Steve WB2KXC

I have a gt3tp, and my cable would not plug in deeply enough and hence I got the same problem. So I took a razor blade to the inside corner of my cable. When I plugged in afterwards there was a distinctive snap. Worked like a charm afterwards. Try starting chirp from a terminal with the command chirpw -v and see what the errors are? The live CHIRP CD makes things easy. Also this cable ends the Prolific problem, but since you're using Linux that's not the problem. [chirp_users] Can't program BF-888s - Solved

The problem I was having programming a Baofeng BF-888s on a Mac was resolved with the help of this group. I finally gave up and returned it to Amazon. I took the advice from a member of the group and ordered the Baofeng BF-888 Plus which worked fine. I had no trouble programming it; it downloaded and uploaded as it should on the first try. I assume the first Baofeng BF-888s was defective. One good thing about Amazon is how easy it is to return items. They even paid postage to return it so there was no cost to me to try it out the first one. A downside is that many people have reported getting returned items rather than new when ordering. I suspect the first one, which I used to start my thread, was a returned defective unit. It came with the battery fully charged, the battery and radio were not in little plastic bags like my new one, and there were a couple of minor scratches on it. I wish to thank all who answered my original questions. They helped me track down the problem. I also appreciate those who develop Chirp. As a Mac user, I don’t have many (any?) other choices for programming my radios. Thank you. Ed KV4MI

[chirp_users] transfering from one Baofeng to another problem

Hi, I have done this before, but now I don't know what I'm doing different. I have a Baofeng UV-5R and a Baofeng BF -F9 UV2. I started with the UV5R and someone gave me a CSV file, and I imported that to my UV5R. Then I actually imported that same file into a Baofeng BF 8HP for my son. And I believe that I imported the same file to the BF-F9UV2, but I have to select the BF8HP for that radio. All three have been programmed, so I did it somehow. But now I am trying to export the BF-9UV2 and import it into a UV5R, actually same radio, I had just updated my 9, and wanted both radios to have the same channels. But I either get errors that the files are not compatible, or it hangs, like there is a conflict. I'm doing this in Ubuntu. Thanks, and I hope that this is not as clear as mud. Glenn

Hi, Chirp has been working flawlessly for about 9 months now. The problem I am suddenly having is I cannot download from the radio. I can upload without any problem. When trying to upload I get an error message saying "can not communicate with radio. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Joe, K5WAS

I gave up trying to program the Baofeng BF-888s and returned it. I notice Amazon is selling a Baofeng BF-888S Plus which is claimed to be an ”upgrade version” but probably uses the same electronics. The first Amazon review that came up on my browser dated December 28, 2016 stated “It was a breeze to program using CHIRP.” However a search of the chip issues page shows Bug #3651 stating “So basically CHIRP does not support the BF-888s Plus.” It has not been updated in 8 months so I assume that is still the case. Does anyone know if the BF-888s Plus is supported by Chirp on a Mac? Thank you for your responses to my earlier question. Ed KV4MI

I recently purchased a Boafeng UV-5RA. I was able to get the NOAA weather stations programmed for the areas I travel too. But I am having a problem getting the local Emergency Response stations programmed. I have the frequencies but cant seem to pick up the transmissions. I would appreciate any help/advice anyone would be willing to provide to me. Thank you.

I have tried to run CHIRP (old & new ) on my MAC OS Sierra 10.12.2. on a Macbook Pro Retina Intel Core I.5. I disabled the SIP as per instructions in your Mac os tips: (cut & Paste below) but CHIRP still does not run. When I double click on the CHIRP Icon (after unzipping) It flashes like it its about to start but nothing happens. Any offers? 73's Eric Application Security in 10.12+ As of 10.12 (Sierra) the UI for disabling app security was removed. The functionality is still there, but must be enabled from the command line. To whitelist a single application (like an unzipped chirp-daily.app): 1. unzip chirp.zip 2. control click on the unzipped application and select New Terminal at Folder. (Don't see that menu item? Instructions to enable it <https://lifehacker.com/launch-an-os-x-terminal-window-from-a-specific-folde…> ) 3. run this command in the newly opened terminal window: 4. spctl --add $PWD

I have a problem getting chirp to download from a Baofeng BF-888s. I wanted a UHF only HT and who could resist one for $13. However when I try to download from the radio, instantly I get the message “An error has occurred” There is no delay as the computer tries to connect to the radio. I have used Chirp successfully to program a Kenwood TH-F6A and a Baofeng UV5R and am sure the cable is seated securely. I am using the same program, drivers, and cable and selecting the BF 888 radio from the dropdown menu. I tried putting the radio on channel 16 per bug #1441. It didn’t help. Before I send the radio back to Amazon, I wonder if there is something I’m doing wrong. Some specifics: Desktop is iMac running OS Sierra 10.12.2 Using Chirp daily build 20170111 Wouxon cable Radios - Kenwood TH-F6a and Baofeng UV5R work fine. Any help would be appreciated. Ed KV4MI

This is not a complaint but maybe a bug. I program radios for our SAR unit and we have some Baofeng UV5R radios. Using Chirp I programed my 4 with out any problem and saves the data. when i went to program some others they would not program no matter what i did , the popup said a bunch of stuff to include something about firmware? I think i am using the latest Version or chirp. this did this on two different computers. After trying different ways i change to the UV5 vip program and downloaded the data from a programmed radio , and uploaded to the 4 radios that would not program with chirp with out a problem? Hello Jim, Yes, I also have a single cable unlike the Baofeng double variety, and I still get the same message... I have also tried with the manufacturers software that I downloaded from their website, in-fact they have 2 versions..and no luck with either. I have just ordered ANOTHER cable that is specified as THE ONE for this radio...has not arrived yet... lets see what happens with this one! I am getting to the stage of introducing this radio to my friend...Winchester!!! ..If you know what I mean!!! Grrr 73's Eric

Hi Jardy, Yeap, I have made sure the cable is well seated so I do not think there is a connection problem. :-( I might just open up the radio and see if the jack plug is actually lining up with the socket contacts Has anyone else had a similar problem and solved it? Thanks Eric

Greetings CHIRPers, I am having problem with a ZASTONE MP-300. I have tried all versions of CHIRP....old and latest version. I have the proper 'Prolific' cable and it works with all other Chinese radios..Baofeng, TYT, Wouxon, etc. but noe the MP-300 When I try to program the MP-300 even when CHIRP suggests trying to use other makes as they are clones of the MP-300, it still cannot communicate with the radio. The message I get is 'Radio did not enter clone mode' I am using XP Pro Any suggestions please 73's Eric

Hello Tom, Thank you for the procedure, though I am a bit reluctant to disable the SIP installed in the OS....I am not suggesting that there is some malware in CHIRP nonetheless the possibility will always be there. Lets assume I disable the csrutil to allow CHIRP to work, if I re-enable csrutil after I have run CHIRP, will this action prevent me using CHIRP again or will the OS remember that csrutil allowed CHIRP earlier on? Looking forward to suggestion 73's

Hi all! Last night I installed chirp (yesterday's daily, 20170111) on Ubuntu 16.04. I tried by adding the respiratory and running sudo apt-get install... from the command line and also by downloading the tarbal. Both ways gave me a 'locale not supported by C library...' message when I opened it. Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone help me with with this? Thanks,

Hi to all, I'm working remotely with a willing user to get a serial log one of this radio (TK-280) and start the development of a basic Chirp's driver. My goal is to make at least a successful download/upload script and parse the general channel data for this model (TK-280), my experience points that making support for one member of the family will make trivial to extend it to the rest of the family; by looking to the OEM software the whole family could be: TK-780/880/280/380/980/981/480/481 Further development (beyond upload/download and simple channel data) will be very unlikely from my side as I don't have a radio at reach to test and hack at this time. *Side note:* I live in Cuba island, sending me a radio is not an option (yet), I must work remotely and some users must cooperate with me in the testing of this driver; I have done that before is hard work but works, the BTECH and brothers radios support for chirp was made this way with the great help of Jim Unroe. [chirp_users] Tone frequencies disappearing

Hello to the group, I searched the FAQ site but could not find this question..I am programming the uv-82hp. When I put in the receive freq, name, tone squelch, both tone frequencies, and so onthey remain in their respective spots. But when I start to input the tones in the next line down, the tone or tones from the previous line disappear. I have to re put them in but the same thing happens with the current column. Greetings, I am running MAC Os SIERRA and have just downloaded the latest CHIRP. After decompressing the file and clicking on the CHIRP app. i get the usual security warning that MAC will flag. After I acknowledge the flag and accept the software download, when I click on the CHIRP icon nothing happens....no CHIRP ! SIERRA already has the RUNTIME installed so that would not appear to be the problem. Any suggestions? Thanks 73's

I really, really am not trying to be rude. Sorry, but blaming OS X is very unhelpful. CHIRP worked fine and now it doesn¹t and this is an OS issue? Rhetorical. Unless someone can assist me, actually, assist, I would just as soon have no response. The idea was to just report a bug seen in OS X. I believe this to be a program (CHIRP) issue. I see no point in changing the functioning of my system for the one ³odd ball² issue. But I thank you for your response.
