[chirp_users] Issue with programming Baofeng UV-82HP

Hi All, I am using CHIRP to program in all of my repeaters into the UV-82HP. I ran into an issue: When loading in the CTCSS Codes to "unlock" the repeater, the software will load the CTCSS code on BOTH the Receive CTCSS (R-CTCS, Menu 11) and Transmit CTCSS (T-CTCS, Menu 13), instead of ONLY the T-CTCS, so I am unable to receive any signal coming back from the repeaters. Afterwards, when I try to change the R-CTCS to 0.000 Hz, it will automatically switch back to the programmed R-CTCS code when I exit the Menu. I have not seen in CHIRP a way to program EITHER the R-CTCS or the T-CTCS, there's only one called:TSQL, which seemingly changes both the R-CTCS & the T-CTCS Is there a way where I can change my R-CTCS codes back to 0.000 Hz and save the setting permanently in my radio? Hi All, I have just recently purchased a Baofeng BF-F8HP and installed Chirp on my Mac Pro. I am unable to connect to the radio to download the initial configuration. I played around with all of the suggested tip and tricks for the Mac (running High Sierra) and was not able to get the software to talk to the radio. I pulled out an old Windows 7 laptop and installed the latest versions of Chirp and Prolific drivers for my USB-to-Serial cable and all works perfectly... So, this tells me that the radio is working as designed and the cable is working with the latest Prolific drivers. Anyone else having an issue with Chirp on Macs? -- Bob K7BSB

Pardon my question if it’s been beat to death but I couldn’t find it in the archives. I’m trying to program my radio and I’m not able to download from the radio into chirp. The radio and my computer are not communicating. Here are a series of screen shots that I hope can help diagnose the issue. The first is the list of ports available(I don’t think the USB port is listed) The second is the error screen I get when I try any of the ports listed. This normally means the driver and the program had a problem. I am using the latest chirp build on Mac with a Yaesu VX-5R. I have no trouble downloading, therefore I assume the cable and driver are working properly. However I am getting a repeatable Clone Error about 2/3 of the way through (based on the progress indicator). I used brew install to get chirp. I never could get the setting to show in the latest chirp build in both the Linux and the windows version. Download from it. If that fixed the out-of-range setting, then you will see the Settings. Once that is successful, you can then "import" your saved image with the out-of-range setting into this tab. Make any other settings change and upload it into your radio. If that doesn't fix it, email the image to me and I will take a look at it. Has anyone considered the adding of the Alinco DJ-10X to the list of supported radios? I have one, but it seems to be a bit of a problem programing it, considering all it's features. Are there any recommended sources for buying a better antenna and battery packs, both sealed and for individual batteries? Also, if someone offers a good price, I may even consider selling it.

Hi; I have just subscribbed to this list, and I have a problem, hope you can help. I have downloaded the latest software an driver (Window 7), connected to my radio (Baofeng UV-82, and downloaded the configuration. The Settings menu is empty. I have an older version (linux live cd version) and it shows the setting file and contents. Just wondering what I have missed /not doing correctly in the windows 7 version. Thanks Joe

I checked the connections - all fit snuggly! Try again - error! Started up the other PC in the shack - connected the cables and ran CHIRP - radio says error. And then the light went on! Fruit Cake was using the FT-8800 cable on the FT-817ND - and it don’t work!! ☺ Got the correct cable, connected it up and everything was purring along - no problems! Hello Group, I'm having trouble programing an Alinco DJ-G7. The error I get is: "Failed to communicate with radio: invalid literal for int() with base 16: 'NG'" First question: Chirp supports the "Alinco DJ-G7EG", but my radio is just labeled "DJ-G7". Am I barking up the wrong tree and confusing radios? I can download and upload using Alinco's software, so I'm sure the hardware connection is okay. The cable is an Alinco ERW-7 and Alinco EDS-14 adapter. Both are factory parts. The radio is new and has version 5.100 firmware. I found the "DJ-G7EG" on the following website and it looks like that is a different version of the radio. I walked away from my PC for 20 minutes and came back to the blue screen. I can't remember if Chirp was open or closed. Most likely closed. Maybe related to Chirp, maybe not. Since copying stock configs is what triggers this and causes chirp to just silently fail to start up, we can just log and punt the issue. This should let us start up (sans configs) and do stuff. I expect that as long as you save files somewhere outside of a unicode-having path, it will work, although config save at exit probably will fail (which is also non-fatal).

Dennis, I administer license exams. We always encourage those who do well on their technician exam to take the general exam. Recently two candidates, who did not plan to take more than technician, also passed the general. Both left in a mild state of shock. Not everyone passes, but it is good practice. Two numbers to remember: 300: speed of light in millions of meters per second. Divide 300 by MHz and get wavelength. Divide 300 by wavelength in meters and get MHz. Half of the wavelength gives you the length of a half wave dipole, etc. A meter = about 40 inches or about 3-1/4 feet. 7: We have bands starting at 7, 14, 21, 28, and 3.5 MHz. CW and data in the lower part; voice and image in the upper parts. Get the colorful frequency chart from ARRL: http://www.arrl.org/graphical-frequency-allocations That will give you another way to look at amateur allocations. 1 week ago I told my Elmer I was ready for my technicians exam. (BTW my 'Elmer' is young enough to be my grandson). He then says, "Take the General while you're there. There's no extra charge and no penalty for failing." I said ok and told him I would cram for General. One week later I am passing sample General exams with mid 80 percent scores. The only things that keep tripping me up are: G1A - General Class control operator frequency privileges; primary and secondary allocations and G1C - Transmitter power regulations; data emission standards It's all memorization. I am a better critical thinker and problem solver than I am a memorizer. Looks like I'm going to have to sell some music gear to buy HF rig. Dennis M. Hello: I had purchased this Baofeng Tech model UV-25X4 and the FTDI (PC04) programming cable from the same vendor. I had accessed and programmed this radio several times with minimal issues. I had it in use for some time as a base, then mobile unit. After less than a year, it stopped transmitting. I determined the radio would power up and receive, but no longer had output. In prepping to return, I hooked in the radio into the same computer and cable I programmed it with to create a back up and reset radio to factory settings, but kept getting the error "Radio did not Enter Clone Mode". I also tried it with the latest CHIRP builds, a different computer, all the same result. I have verified the cable is being recognized through my OS's System Profiler and my Terminal programs. I had consulted your CHIRP troubleshooting and the Miklor site. I had also tried some other tricks and variations, but still unsuccessful. Thinking it could another fault with the radio, I waited for the new radio and tried again- ALL SAME RESULT. I am now stuck. I'm considering buying another cable and try again. I would appreciate any guidance. I have Apple Mac OS 10.6.8, FTDI FT231X USB UART cable (S/N: DN01RX2S), used CHIRP Builds 20170414 through 20180331, and running Python Runtime KK7DS I have noted on your Issues section you sometimes request log file(s) to be sent for analysis. Neil, I tried setting off or tone only. No matter what I select in tone mode, tone or none, Chirp puts D-77I into R-DCS, and this prevents the squelch from opening. I am beginning to think there is a problem with Chirp programming the Wouxun KG0UV8D radios. Joe, W7LUX

Hi. Using Chirp Daily 20180331 on Linux Mint 18.2 (32bit.) I have been using it successfully with other rigs just fine. I was recently given a PX-2R UHF handie, by someone who couldn't make it work. Well, nothing wrong with the rig, it works well enough as a (small) pocket hand-held UHF radio, once I'd read the manual and setup a few things from the front panel via the keypad... I noticed it is "in the list" of supported rigs by Chirp (are there any other rig identities I could try) so acquired an interface lead, verified that works OK, and "had a play." Problems.. 1) Chirp has trouble reading the memory contents, usually graying out the entire row, and placing "ERROR" in the "Name" cell's, and a frequency of 0.0000000 in all the frequency cell's. For any "channel" that is occupied. For known empty channels, it has a "Name" of 'k' and a frequency of 1666.665000, and other odd things. It goes through the "Cloning from radio" download process apparently fine, the above only appearing after it's done that. No change if I power up the rig in VFO or "Channel" (memory only) mode. 2) If I manually create an channel entry in Chirp, even a simple simplex channel (433.500 no tone or DTCS settings etc.) the frequency is programmed in OK, but the memory channel is "locked". I can't do anything with it, not edit or overwrite manually. So far, the only way out of that, is to perform a "Full" reset of the radio, loosing any manually entered channels in the process. I've tried that after "reading" the radio, and from importing some channels from another radio backup, and "cherry picking" known compatible settings. Likewise, it goes through the "Cloning to radio" upload process seemingly without errors, and the radio restarts, as if it's just been turned on. So. Who can help? I'm willing to try "bleading edge" trial versions, and run any debug/data collection tests as needed. Just tell me how. I have some Python skill's, but I'm not up to diving into the Chirp codebase just yet, at least not without guidance! As earlier, the programming lead itself checks out fine. I still cannot get the Wouxun KG-UV8D to program properly. I have tried both Windows 10 and Linux versions of Chirp with similar results. This problem persists with three different radios. A possible clue: After programming the radio, I manually go to the R-DCS menu item and change D77I to OFF; that channel then immediately starts working and opens the squelch on receive. How do I tell Chirp to set R-DCS to OFF for all channels? My Baofeng UV-5R is a three band HT that came with two antennas. There is no description of which antenna is used with which of the three band (2m., 1.25m., and 70 cm.) One antenna is just shy of 6.5' long and somewhat slim. The other is just over 41/4" and more stubby. I find the longer one works satisfactorily on both 2m. and 70 cm. which I use the most. But I would appreciate any input describing the proper designed and intended band use of each antenna. Gary (W8HT)

Chirp appears to program the KG-UV8D (Chirp reports software version UV8DV1.05), but received signals will not open the squelch. I have to manually go to every channel in the radio and change either R-CTC or R-DCS before there is audio (the monitor button also works). Three of these radios behave the same. I have no other versions of Wouxan img files. Once I fiddle with the R-CTC or R-DCS settings the radios receive normally, but changing 100 channels in each of 3 radios would be tedious. Known history: These radios were purchased new, used for local communications, and retired with broken antennas. Chirp procedure using a recently updated Linux Mint version: There are no values visible in the Chirp spreadsheet for CTS or DCS. Download img file from Wouxan Delete old frequencies Add about 100 frequencies (copied from UV-5R file) Upload to same Wouxan What might I be doing wrong, and what can I do to correct this problem? So I get one of those Radioddity QB25 radios. I was so glad to see that Chirp supports it! When I choose "Download from Radio," I can select Radioddity and QB25. When I select "OK," the display shows QYT and KT7900D the Radio Identification is successful about 1/3 through the 'cloning' this error occurs... I have no where else to ask this question. Is TSQL the same as CTCSS? The reason I am so intrigued is about this is The other day my UV-5R was in scan mode and a repeater in Huntsville continually stopped my scan with a carrier or tone, not sure which yet. But I heard no audio. No matter where I set the squelch, even to 0 I got no audio. However, if I hit the Moni button I could hear the guys talking. What was happening here? Thanks in advance. I have not performed the smoke test on mine yet. I usually leave the cable in it. I use it as a base so no reason to take the cable out. However, this time I wasn't paying attention and left the radio on when I plugged in the USB cable. It instantly shut down and there was a wisp of smoke from the back of the radio. Was entering the 40+ Travis County, TX repeaters by hand from repeaterbook, and happened to discover that Chirp supports import. Unfortunately, when I use the political region import feature, select Texas, Travis County, 2M band, I get a bunch of channels with no data and the frequency set to 0.00. I use Apple Mac computers with the latest OS - 10.13 High Sierra. I bought a used Wouxun KG-UV3D with old programming cable. Needless to say, this combination doesn’t work. I think I have 2 problems: 1) the HT doesn’t communicate with the computer, and 2) the most current CHIRP software doesn’t appear to cover the KG-UV3D, though I could be wrong. RE: #! — I have seen on youtube that many times the older programming cables need to be updated. Can any Mac users suggest the proper cable for my MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2012) running OSX 10.13.3 ? RE: #2 — Should I use an older/ earlier release of the CHIRP software? I’m at my wits end with my Mac computer. I’m not versed in the commands using the terminal and I’m not very proficient with a Mac computer either but I’m stuck with it. I have a Baofeng bf-888s and started trying to program it using a generic programming cable with no success. The computer would recognize that something was plugged in but that was it. I bought a legit FTDI cable and now the computer recognizes it with all the information included so I believe that the Mac sees it... but using chirp I get the “errno2” error message when I try to download from the radio! I’ve tried drivers, this, that, and I honestly want to throw this Mac in front of a fast moving truck on the freeway! My Mac is running “high Sierra” 10.13.1 Please help!!!!!

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The whole concept of programmable devices that can be programmed to destruction by interfering with the 'wrong' memory is flawed from the start and I don't understand why people buy them. The whole concept of programmable devices that require the use of non-standard cables which in turn require the use of out-of-date drivers on the programming device is ridiculous. Why these radios have gained such a following is beyond me. Why most of them have not been returned for refunds the minute they exhibit the faults that I have read about on here time and time again is also beyond me. Whatever happened to Plug And Play? As an example, even the cheapest printer has more complex user-selectable parameters available than most of the programmable radios. Printers come with drivers that work, with user-friendly user-interfaces that only allow the programming of whatever is sensibly programmable, and with hardware interfaces that are connected to the programming device via standard cables available from the average supermarket down the road. When I bought my UV5R it came with a programming cable that didn't work, and an incomprehensible CD full of software that is mostly useless. When I finally got something to work the user-interface to the spread-sheet lookalike was at best clunky - I would describe it as awful. There were no instructions to speak of and no support from the suppliers. When I add up the hours I have spent and apply a reasonable hourly rate it becomes obvious that these radios are not cheap at all. I recently read somewhere that recent handhelds from at least one of the big three suffers from the same problems. That's it then - the end of amateur radio is nigh. My one regret is that me and my UV5R have contributed to that because I did not return it for a refund. (The UV5R is not a particularly good radio anyway. The colour display uses far too much power and cannot cope with bright sunlight. Firstof all .CSV is NOT a microsoft format, end of story. In fact, it hardly justifies being called a format when the only thing that makes it different from any old text is a lot of commas. The .DOC format is not microsoft either, I believe they stole it from WordStar in the same way that they stole the name PageMaker, mangled RS232 hardware handshaking, and failed completely to wire a DIN plug properly on their early keyboards. Thanks to Brandon Clark, P? P?, and others for their support re: This just kills me... Trevor Holyoak - I feel that you have given me an unjustified low score on technical aptitude, please allow me to correct that impression. I have worked as an Electronics Design Engineer for most of my working life. As a hobbyist, I have built radios from scratch, I have worked with valves ranging in size from Nuvistors to 4CX250B's and all sorts of transistors. I have modified the Trio 2300G, the Liner 2, and a wartime VHF Tx/Rx of uncertain origin that tuned the IF using a variable capacitor in each IF stage to select stations. I once put together a rats'-nest PLL using a popular chip of the early 80's and then wrote a program on the BBC Micro to prove that it would decode packet radio signals. I put the extra 'dot' on the frequency display of the Icom IC211E and modified the fast/slow tuning button to make it push on/push off. There were many many more such modifications and experiments back then. I also made a strobe light using the Xenon tube out of an old camera flash gun. It wouldn't work with the trigger voltage provided inside the flash gun, but hooking it up to a handy motorcycle ignition coil solved that little problem! The only thing was that when I touched the metal shaft of the speed control pot I got a bit of a tingle up my arm. This made the strobe light difficult to use - a leather glove helped but was not ideal. I used a PIC microcontroller to enable me to plug an analogue joystick into a mouse port, so I could then fly the virtual Sopwith Camel properly! I wrote the program for that little device, it worked a treat! The hardware just fitted into the really small size of die-cast aluminium box, the long thin one, complete with a 9-way 'D' connector at each end. Powered by the computer mouse port, it needed no batteries. The point is, all of those modifications provided IMPROVEMENTS to existing equipment and the experiments provided USEFUL RESULTS which could either be expanded, or would suggest that the whole idea should be abandoned. Neither the modifications nor the experiments were required because the brand-new paid-for equipment did not work straight out of the box. I did not need to scratch around searching for third-party software because the supplied software was no good, all in Chinese, or both. None of the modifications or experiments were a waste of my time, time which should never have been required in the first place. And this is where the difference is between all those things and the Chinese radios that sparked this discussion. The radios waste my time unnecessarily, it is time that has to be used in order to make the radios work properly. No improvements are made, and no useful results are obtained. I also repair motorcycle electrical systems and restore vintage reel-to-reel tape recorders amongst many other practical activities. Life isn't all about electronics! Now I see that you have to use an old version of Python to run Chirp on some computers! Don't get me wrong, I think Chirp is great. Not to interrupt this fascinating discussion on who owns csv files, but to get back to the point . . . As one respondent correctly pointed out, ham radio is supposed to require some technical attitude. I think that's true, and that it is a good thing for the hobby. However, my opinion is that the difficulty of interfacing with and programming radios exists because the process is fundamentally overcomplicated and cumbersome, not because it requires more skill than some hams have. It's just a bad model for how to accomplish the process, and we all know it hurts the hobby by discouraging new hams. By comparison, I could buy a $50 burner phone and a $5 USB cord and interface that phone with any modern computer system to transfer data. Plug and play. Middle school kids build $30 raspberry pi systems that log weather, track motion, and do all kinds of cool things. But to program a $1,000 radio I have to search eBay for a cable, locate drivers somewhere in the bowels of the internet, and then download an image from the device. Honestly ask yourself this, if you had to do all these steps in order to get music downloaded on your phone how many people would just say, "heck no, it isn't worth it!" Probably a lot. Ham radio is all about finding challenges; that's true. But if the hobby is going to survive long term there has to be accessible avenues to at least get started in the hobby. HT and mobile rigs can't be using 80's tech forever, or it will make us look like dinosaurs, and keep new hams away. Let them build radios from kits, terminate cables, and make homebrew vacuum tubes from bubble gum and shot glasses when they get more advanced. Brandon

Hi All I'm facing repeated problems creating a chirp usb system. I've checked my download is correct. Burning is another story. Has anyone burned the iso recently? I've been using Debian, but just now switched to latest Mint. I have tried unetbootin, "Disks", and various other tools. I get messages saying this is not a bootable disk. How can I seriously validate the steps and accuracy of my burning process? Hopefully yours Phil VK4AJK

If you look at the start end of your radio programming CABLE, you will see a bulbous end which contains a small USB-TTL converter. The Manufacturers of those “chips” also wrote software to handle the conversion process. Along comes ANOTHER Chinese Manufacturer who reverse engineers the chips (without paying for R+D) and puts them out for even cheaper. The original chip maker then puts out software that will identify the fake chips and fail to operate, thus creating the problems for hams. Even the radio manufacturers have jumped on the cheap bandwagon and incorporated the fake chips in their own cables. So, WAR has broken out, back and forth. Hello, If this is too off topic, scold me and I'll never do it again. I have a UV-5R. I love this $25 radio for what it is, except. I want to use headphones. However I cannot stand to have audio in just one ear. Plus I drive noisy lawn gear and tractors. I use ear buds with gun muffs over the ear. Microphone will come later when I get my technician test passed. The head phone output is 2.5mm TRS (this alone bugs the crap out of me.) In addition, the tip only carries audio and the ring is TX data. When the radio is scanning there is a low frequency thump in time with the scan that comes out the data port ring. If I plug a 2.5mm TS the data port ring will short to the sleeve. I'm not sure this is good idea. So, I think my only option is to buy a 2.5mm TRS and make a mono cord that only uses the tip. I can then split it to a stereo TRS 3.5mm female to plug my earbuds into. Any other ideas would be appreciated. Dennis M. I have a TH 9000 that I am trying to program with CHIRP. According to software, the radio 9000_144 is supported by Chrip, however, when I try to read from radio, it says, "unsupported model." Any ideas? I have used Chirp in the past to program this radio using Windows 7, which is what I am using now. Just got a new BTECH 5x3. It is my understanding that there is no other software available except CHIRP. Is there anyway to adjust radio menu items with CHIRP? Listing a few as examples: TX-RX display color, channel display mode (CH#,Freq,Name), I don't see any way to set DTMF alerts, which is the main reason I bought this radio. Thanks in advance.

I accidentally got the "skIp" field to change all channels entered so far to skip. I don't know how I managed that. I also managed to get them all changed back. With my laptop, not realizing which key combination I hit. Can someone please tell me how to make the channels all skip or all narrow band, etc. using just that column? Thanks.

[Mathias Weyland <lt-betrieb(a)hb9uf.ch>] [Alinco DJ-G7] Introduce empty flag, mode & frequency range checks. At the time I was adding support for the DJ-G7 radio, I was not aware of a flag that was used to hide memory channels in the main band. The main band only supports a subset of modes and frequencies on this radio. My original code used this flag improperly, such that a channel was never hidden from the main band regardless of its settings. This does not do any harm to the radio, but such a memory channel is useless in the main band due to hardware constraints. More importantly, the original programming software by Alinco crashes when operating on a memory map pulled from a radio programmed with chirp if the flag is not used correctly. After some discussions with and advice from Emiel, I have completed a patch that adds proper support for this flag. The patch is attached. See #5275 for a more in-depth discussion of the issue.

I'm a recent Chirp (mac version) user that is running macOS and a FT-2DR. As stated by others, get the RT Systems usb cable and download the RT Systems macOS drivers from the RT Systems website, together with the instructions. I did this and my MacBook Air recognizes the usb driver and I'm able to use Chirp in the macOS environment (not in a parallel environment). D.J. Ring has been very helpful in his ongoing patient advice on this issue, and asked me to outline the drivers on my 10.9.5 Macbook. I have zero background in computers and such, and so much of the advice from others goes right over my head, and I am sure many others. Here is the list of drivers on my Mac with the Valley Ent. cable plugged in. USB Hi-Speed Bus Apple USB-EHCI OxO aa9and an aa6, and an OxO5ac, and an OxO aa7 FT232R vender ID: FTDIlocation: OxO620000000 / 3 BRCM2046 HubOxOa5c (Broadcom)location: OxO610000000 / 2 then some other Apple related "keyboard" and "IR Receiver" related stuff. NOTHING ELSE!Does that mean I have all that I need in order to program my Yaesu 2900R on CHIRP or not?

If there is anyone who has actually SUCCEEDED in programming the FT2900R on CHIRP with a Macbook (10.5.5 Maverick here), would you please offer a reply here? My query last week received no responses. And I am reading mixed messages and member's thoughts and opinions on the subject in yesterday's other member's parallel question, but we have not seen anything from anyone who has actually succeeded with a Mac and a Valley Enterprises cable. I suspect there are several here who would profit from a "step-by-step" tutorial from a member who has. It is listed as a programmable radio on Chirp, but at this point, I am starting to wonder why. Thanks in advance for your help on this. :)

While attempting to run the initial download for a group of new recently received Baofeng UV-6 radios, all are responding with “radio refused to send second block 0x1ec0” right at the tail end of the download... I’m using the most recent CHIRP build for Mac. I’ve attempted multiple Macs, no difference. I’ve attempted older 2017 versions of CHIRP, no difference. The cable I’m using works for other Baofengs, including UV-6 units we purchased 5 months ago, just not these particular UV-6 units. These units are clearly labeled UV-6 (not UV-6R). Tried the UV-6R setting just in case, but the download didn’t start. Any suggestions? -Charley KE4QBW

Why doe’s Chirp have the Yaesu FT2900 listed as one that can be programmed. I purchased a lead with disc, the disc has programs for other radios but the one for Yaesu is in Chinese so hoped that Chirp would do the job. It fails with the error—cannot find header and since then after searching around at least 2 years ago people were having problems but looking through them no one seems to have an answer. Thanks to the Chirp developers for supporting this project. There was a bit of a learning curve for me, but I finally got three of my radios programmed using Chirp. (I had been using RT Systems before but switched to Chirp when I switched my systems to Linux.) I recently moved to Alaska so I've had to not just rearrange channels, but do a complete reprogram of all repeaters, nodes, and simplex frequencies. To any other fellow Chirp-newbies out there this was the process I used: 1. Find cables that worked with my radios (the RT Systems ones wouldn't), 2. Download what was already programmed in my radios, 3. Export to a CSV file so I would have the formatting right, 4. Work with the new channels I wanted in LibreOffice: 1. Change the layout of my spreadsheets from the way RTSys was arranged to the way Chirp is laid out, 5. Paste values into the CSV exports, 6. Import into Chirp, 7. Upload into the radios, I still have an Icom Ht that I'm having communication issues with (no pun intended), but once I get that worked out I should be in business. The answer to my question is pretty apparent, but I want to double check. In the CSV file I'm assuming that some, most or all of the numeric columns cannot be blank or set to zero. Example: Changing tone mode to (None) in Chirp is blank in csv. However if I change rToneFreq, cToneFreq which are now unused to 0 or blank I get an error when importing. So when tone mode is set to none rToneFreq cToneFreq are simply ignored? Dennis M. Hi Guys: I just received my Valley Enterprise Yaesu FT-2900R cable (RPC-YM6-UF). Upon trying to connect CHIRP on my MACBOOK 10.9.5 Maverick XOS, and the MARS-modified 2900R radio, I get an error message of: "Could not open port (error #2)...no such file or directory."I am successful with connecting my Yaesu FT-60 to the Mac, and I did not make any changes to the computer before attempting to hook up the FT-2900R, but with the FT-2900 cable plugged in, I do get an new extra choice in my drop down menu "RADIO: Download from radio" "serial" box choices. The FT-60 works using the original "/DEV/cu.usbserial", but the FT-2900R fails to work with either that older choice, or the new choice of "/DEV/cu.usbserial-A107368". I have gone to the various CHIRP help forums, and there is a lot about using a build made before some date before circa 06/2016 for a MARS "modded" radio, but that seems to relate only to a PC using Windows. The MacBook info didn't seem to relate to a need for an earlier "build". Indeed, I couldn't find any new builds for a MAC since 2016. What am I doing wrong? Hello, I have been trying in vain to get my radio to talk with CHIRP on my Macbook Pro running 10.13.3. I have downloaded and installed the latest cable drivers and the latest CHIRP build. I have verified that the cable is recognized, but when I try to download from the radio, even with the correct radio (UV-5RV2+) and port (/dev/cu.usbserial), it simply hangs and says that the radio did not respond. All of the software works great on my PC, but I have been trying to get the Mac version to work for a long time with no luck. I have scanned countless forums and mail lists, but I have yet to find a solution. The cable I have is a Baofeng cable (it says Baofeng right on it), so I assume that this is not a cheap junk cable. I have attached the debug log below. Can anyone help please!!

Hi. As the TH-G71 is already listed in Chirp. (CHIRP daily-20180210 at least.) You need to use USBview ( http://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Utilities/usbview.zip ) to determine the chipset the cable or radio uses, then go to the chipset companies website, or the radio maker's site, if the chip is built into the radio, and pull the driver setup files for your OS. (It is a genuine Microsoft tool, just that FTDI host a copy, as it's difficult to find on MS's pages, or a genuine version elsewhere. There is a Linux version too, but needs building from source, not difficult, but not exactly a beginner option.) Kenwood (and others) have used SiLabs USB/Serial chips for many products, I don't know for that radio. Check the Kenwood radio website. If you bought or made up a cable, then it's the USB/Serial chip in that you need the OS drivers for. Take care with anything that identifies itself as using a Prolific chip. There are many fakes, that the current officially supported (by Prolific and MS) will not work with. (There are even fake FTDI chips out there!) As in all things these days, Google is your friend. One thing I'm noticing these days across many ham forums, Windows 10 and anything MAC related, is a nightmare. Stick with Windows 7 (or 8/8.1) while you can, or move to Linux (something like Ubuntu or Mint, easier for Windows users to learn, and start with a 32 bit release.) Chirp runs on Linux just fine, and even all the fake USB/Serial chips seem to still work OK. No endorsement, just saying. 73. Dave G0WBX. Under Windows, you can use USBview. http://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Utilities/usbview.zip This is actually a genuine Microsoft tool, but it's almost impossible to find on any MS site. It's too useful not to have! For Linux:- http://www.kroah.com/linux-usb/ Is very good, but you need to build from source. In truth, it's a modified fork of the source for the above Microsoft program. You also need to run it with root privileges, or use sudo from the users command line, or gksu in a desktop launcher. If there is anything similar for Mac's, I have no knowledge. Perhaps the Linux source could be persuaded to build on a Mac? But how useful it would be, I don't know, as Mac's are based on BSD, not Linux, the devil is in the detail etc. 73. [chirp_users] Yaesu FT-2DR and Mac OS 10.13.3 (High Sierra) Programming Cable Recommendation

Looking for some specific advice for a FTDI cable for use with the Yaesu FT-2DR and Mac OS 10.13.3 on McBook Air (not running Windows on a separate partition). I have reviewed the Chirp FAQ, cable sections, Activity, etc. and have searched various websites for a specific FTDI USB cable without success as most that I have located do not have the correct connection to plug into the FT-2DR. The FT-2DR came with a USB cable, but I believe this is a cable specifically for updating the firmware and not for programing via Chirp. I'm unable to find any info on the Yaesu USB cable whether it’s a FTDI and/or Prolific type cable, but I suspect that its neither as my MacBook Air does nothing when plugged in nor does Chirp recognize any available port for uploading/receiving HT data. The FT-2DR does have a SD card, and I have event tried making a backup file of the memory channels (file name created on SD card is MEMORY.dat), taking that file and loading it into Chirp, manipulating with my local repeater info, re-save as a MEMORY.dat file, and on the FT-2DR read the file with no success. I've spent way too much time trying to figure this out, and I am giving up. So can anyone recommend a FTDI cable specific for the FT-2DR that will work with Chirp on my MacBook Air or alternatively a FTDI cable specific to the FT-2DR that will work with Chirp on a Windows 10 machine. I don't want to fuss with counterfeit cables and the headache of loading appropriate drivers. The data cable that came with the FT-2DR is a std USB on one end and the end that goes into the data port on the FT-2DR I believe is a mini usb. Thank you in advance.
