[chirp_users] Stable low cost radio with flat audio

I am asking this question here as I believe there is a good collection of folks who are familiar with different radios. Of course whatever is recommended I hope it can be programmed with Chirp. I am looking for a handheld radio that can do 12.5khz bw audio that can be used for data. I would hope it would have a flat audio in/out port but if not mods are part of the game. It needs to be frequency stable (I will be using it for data) and 12.5khz channel widths. and of course programmable with Chirp. The radio cost needs to be low, I would like to keep the whole project under $500. I will need two radios 1 for RX and 1 for TX. There will be a controller involved. If need be I will put each radio in a can for isolation. This is for a solar project so that is also part of the reason to try to use a handheld. -- Chuck -- KP4DJT HamHotline # 11259

[chirp_users] Install experience on Linux Mint 21.2

I had been using Chirp on Windows 11 without issue, but I decided I wanted to give it a shot on my Mint 21.2 (Victoria) laptop. The following is what I noted. FWIW...I consider myself to be pretty well-versed in Linux, although my experience with Ubuntu-based distros is lesser and more recent. - Installed the dependencies with 'apt install' with no issue. - "managed flag" vs "no managed flag"...I wasn't sure what this meant, and there isn't any explanation other than Ubuntu and Debian version numbers. It looks like maybe it has something to do with Python virtual environments. I had to dig around a little to find that my Mint version is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, so NO "managed flag". I feel like other, less experienced, Linux users might struggle a bit to figure this out. - I had downloaded the latest .whl file into ~/Downloads, so...'pip install Downloads/chirp-blah.whl'. This worked fine, and chirp launches out of ~/.local./bin. - A step could be saved if pip were just pointed to the whl file online. Would it be possible to have something like 'chirp-latest.whl' that links to the latest version? Overall, it was pretty smooth and I completed the steps in about 10 minutes, including figuring out the Mint vs Ubuntu version thing, although I have not yet had Chirp communicate with a radio! ;-) -- 73, Matt, N0EYE

OS: Linux Mint v20.3 Uma Python installs are so unwieldy... Why would anyone choose that over C++ Source ?! Did as instructed for the install of the .whl file, made sure all the depends where there (I already had all of the most recent versions installed). Ran the command for the UnManaged (Ubu v22.10<) on the wheel file, and got interpreter failure... Will try running it directly on the tar.gz archive, but not hopeful. Unless the snake is pretty smart. Compiling and installing from 'C' has always worked well. But I've had nothing but problems with Py3.9 -- 73 4 Now, Bruce

First off, I want ALL the user accounts (all me) to be able to access chirp, If I'm logged in to my GMRS account I want to use chirp to program THOSE radios, if I'm logged in under my Amateur Call I want to use chirp THERE to program my Ham Rigs... And have the associated data files available THERE... After reinstalling Py3.9 a couple times I FINALLY got chirp to install, but not without complaining about the out of date pip util. So I followed the instruct on how to upgrade that, and v21.3.1 is STILL being used. <sigh> Even though the upgrade to v23.3.1 succeeded. So I tried the install of chirp under another user and got an OSError Permission failures, so I 'sodo'd it and THIS is what I got... C was SO much more straight forward... WTF is 'testresources' ?! Tried it in a 'virtual environment' first and we know how THAT worked... And I *DID* upgrade pip you daffy computer !!! And WHY is there any "uninstalling" going on !?!? I guess if a Python is going to kill it's prey, it needs to confuse it first... Like I said, I think I'll stick with the old version of chirp, if what I've done here hasn't totally FUBAR'd that up... ============= Successfully uninstalled future-0.18.2 ERROR: pip's dependency resolver does not currently take into account all the packages that are installed.
