[chirp_users] Wouxun KG-UV6X, is it possible to unlock menu function?
Hello everyone.
I was hoping you could help me out.
I just received my Wouxun KG-UV6X. As expected it showed up with the keyboard locked.
I have a MAC running on OSX 10.9.2. There were several references on the internet suggesting that Chirp can unlock the keyboard.
I am using a USB cable that I have successfully worked with about 15 Wouxun UV3D's as well as a kenwood TH-F6, so I'm pretty darn sure my cable works.
I was able to download from radio on my new UV6X and upload to radio a few frequencies that I need for work tomorrow (Safety/Rescue technician for a large exploration project).
I am unable to unlock the menu feature on the radio.
I was expecting to be able to click on the settings button in Chirp and access that option, and others, from there (similar to the KG-UV3D's I've programmed. However, when I click on the Settings button I get nothing but a blank screen.
I tried to download the free software from the Wouxun site, but of course my OS does not support it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
rob
Rob,
I don't have an X model (I have a D model) so I have no way of testing this. But you should be able to access the Settings->All Settings menu of CHIRP and then enable the top setting which is "Menu Available". Upload the change back to your radio and the Menus should now be available.

Jim, Thanks so much for the quick response!!
I hope I'm not doing something stupid, but for the life of me I can't access ANY settings.
I'm not sure if this photo will come through or not, but it's a screen shot of a chirp window when I click the settings button (in case you can't see it, the Settings button is now blue, but there is nothing but blank screen to the right.)
I downloaded the latest daily build today.
I have downloaded and uploaded back and forth to and from the radio a few times now hoping I'd eventually get access to the settings features.
Any suggestions?
Thanks again, Rob

Rob, I don't have a Mac here. Just Windows 7 and Linux Mint.
There are a couple of thing that you can do.
1. Download and burn CHIRP Live CD to a USB flash drive and use it temporarily to program your radio.
2. Email you CHIRP .img file to me, I will enable the Menu Available setting and email it back.

I don't have a Mac, but when you select File followed by Save, surly you will get to choose where you want to save the .img file just like Windows or Linux.

Jim, thanks for your help! I really do appreciate it.
This might be a little over my head though.
I'm pretty good with computers for a novice, but I cannot find the .img file. If I could find it I could email it to you.
Also, I tried to follow the instructions to use Unetbootin, but I don't even know which distribution to select? Plus, I bet I'd be lost once I re-booted to the USB drive. I know how to re-boot to a bootable hard drive with OSX, but beyond that I'm afraid I might get lost.
Again, thanks for your help. I'm sure you're busy, but I don't want to take too much of your time helping me with something that is probably pretty remedial.

Pardon me if I'm missing something or speaking out of turn, but...
You get the image-file by unloading one out of your radio. Chirp doesn't come with any, since there would be tons of 'em, one or more for each flavor of radio.
You 'download from radio' an image, modify it the way you want, by manually changing settings row by row, or overlaying a dot-csv file from your computer, then uploading the image back up to your radio.
You can save either the .img file out to your computer, if you want to have that to shove back up to your radio, or save a .csv, which is more universal, able to overlay onto other radio images or slurp up into Excel for printing, etc.

Hi Folks,
I'm new here so forgive me if this has been asked before. I just bought a TYT TH-9800. I don't find it in Chirp. It is pretty much identical to my brother's Yaesu FT8900. Can that be used for the TH-9800?
Thanks,

I'd expect the protocol to differ, even if the front panel looks similar. So, no.

There has been some talk of adding the TYT TH-9800 to Chirp, but it sounds like no one with a radio has actually loaned one to a willing developer: http://chirp.danplanet.com/issues/1353

Hi David,
Thanks! This is indeed the TYT software I was referring to. It unpacked as 201454150045945-2 and installed as TH-9800 Eng\Program.exe. Really pretty darn nice for programming channels one at a time, but I can't see a way to import a bunch at a time. The .dat files that are the config files are very space concious but are far from editable.
Am I missing something?

A feature that for now I will sorely miss. It is ironic to have 800 memory channels and no way to import.

Hi, is the TYT TH-9800 part of the daily build in chirp ?
I just got mine but can not get it to work with Chirp. When reading from the radio I can see the TH-9800 as a choice of radio.
Can anyone help??
Mats
In the daily builds, Chirp can manipulate files created by the official TYT TH-9800. Chirp can't download or upload directly to the radio.

Sorry, I forgot a word. Yes, presumably the CD that came with it has the TYT software; I got it online. You can use the TYT software to download and upload data from the radio. The files it saves can be opened in Chirp, where you can copy and paste to other radios, etc. The Chirp support for this radio is incomplete, so you can't upload and download directly from Chirp.

You might want to read the generally positive reviews for the TYT TH-9800 at: http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/11746 http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/11746 where the reviews talk about poor software and a not so good bootlegged cloned FTDI chip USB cable. Following are some comments I excised from the eHam.net http://eham.net/ review, discussing the bad software and somewhat defective USB cable.
I would suggest the first action you take is to replace the use of the bootlegged cloned FTDI chip USB cable because it is one factor of unknown quality item working against you. Valley Enterprises ( http://www.valley-ent.com/ http://www.valley-ent.com/ ) does provide very high quality FTDDI chip USB cables. In particular check out the Valley Enterprises Part #: RPC-Y7800-U FTDI USB http://www.valley-ent.com/catalog/yaesu-usb-ftdi-programming-cable-7800-8800-8900-p-219.html#.VF9x3VPF8j8 cable.
This Valley Enterprises RPC-Y7800-U cable is an aftermarket USB Radio Programming Cable for Yaesu: FT-3000M, FT-7100M, FT-7800E, FT-7800R, FT-7900E, FT-7900R, FT-8000H, FT-8000R, FT-8100H, FT-8100R, FT-8500, FT-8800E, FT-8800R, FT-8900E, and FT-8900R.
The cable price is $23.00, Yes there are cheaper FTDI USB cables available online if you search around. But why spend hours fighting USB cables of unknown quality where Valley Enterprises are recognized for their highest quality F
Excised eHam.net http://eham.net/ Review Comments
The radio of course has a sunny side, too. Sensitivity is very good, frequency range as stated and it came with a separation kit, DTMF mic and a USB cable. Software is free, but not perfect. As mentioned above the TH-9800 is very similar to the FT-8900, even the menu and display is nearly the same.
The Devil’s in the Details the TYT 9800 is identical to the Yaesue 8900 at half the price it would seem so Except that the TYT 8900 uses a USB to mini Programming cord and the issue is that the Chinese use the boot leg FDDI chip and the driver fails more often than not and the software that comes with it sucks, mine has really bad audio issue with the microphone, over and over people tell me I sound muffled on the air fit and finish are better than most knock offs; but if you want high quality of a Yaesu then you are going to be disappointed the TYT 9800 is a good quad band knockoff of the Yaesu 8900 but not the same what do you want for half the price I got what I paid for a cheap radio it works you get what you pay for. I like the radio but being stone cold honest it’s a three nothing more
This is a not a bad radio. but the software is very poor. also when on a repeater the sound goes down but. the main problem is the squelch switch does not work if you go in menu 23 and set the squelch to signal 9 it does no shut the noise out IE no squelch at all. at signal 2 or 6 you cant silence the noise i sent mine back but I hope a firmware update can sort these problems out,

Hi Roger,
I was sorely disappointed by the limitations of the program. But so far, that's all I've found. Perhaps the interest will peek and Chirp will support the TH-9800 as well.

There are a couple of thing that you can do.
Download and burn CHIRP Live CD to a USB flash drive and use it temporarily to program your radio.
Email you CHIRP .img file to me, I will enable the Menu Available setting and email it back.

Rob,
I submitted a patch to CHIRP to improve its KG-UV6X compatibility.
The first part of the patch addresses the X model not having a PONMSG setting. This will allow you to return to the original .img file that you sent to me, if you want. ;-)
While diagnosing the problem that was keeping your settings menu from appearing, I installed the Powerwerx programming software and noticed that while D version had a single setting for bandwidth that adjusted both the RX bandwidth and TX bandwidth at the same time. The X model has a separate setting for RX bandwidth and TX bandwidth. So with CHIRP you could only set and control the RX bandwidth and the TX bandwidth was "stuck" at the default NARROW (NFM) setting.
My patch also adds the ability for X model radios to set the TX bandwidth setting. Here is how you do it.
1 click on a memory to highlight it (or use ctrl-click, shift-click etc. to highlight a group of memories) 2 right-click on a highlighted memory 3 select "Edit" from the dialog box 4 edit the "Mode TX(KG-UV6X)" setting at the bottom of the menu. Note: you can edit the original (RX) Mode setting on this menu panel, too.
Anyway, these change will be available in tomorrow's CHIRP daily build.
Enjoy,
Jim
