[chirp_users] Chirp will not install
I have downloaded Chirp several times. Try to install with No luck. I have tried different browsers. I have tried rebooting. I have tried in safe mode. I have tried all the tricks I can find on the internet, and nothing works. It's like something or some file is missing. I am at my wits end. The install gets to the screen to verify and agree to the license but nothing appears. No license. It sits there for about 5 seconds then vanishes and nothing more. I am on an HP Laptop using Windows 10. Please help.

Hi Gene, What version of windows are you using? Also, are you using a 32 bit windows? Chirp-next may be looking for windows 10. And finally, did you just get the daily Chirp-next, or are you actually using the Chirp Windows installer? I just tested on my windows 10 machine, where I have never previously installed chirp. Went to the download site and it automatically highlighted the correct version (installer) to download/ After download I double clicked on the file just downloaded and it opened the installer and did a normal windows install.
The menu then contained the launch icon and it just worked.
Don't know how you have an issue with installing it on windows so if there is more problem please let us know the details of exactly what is going wrong.

I'm sorry Jeff, but I have tried some more and get the same results. I simply can't understand why it just quits once it gets to the license verification screen. As I said, the terms do not appear at all before it just disappears and does nothing more.

I also just tested on a machine I've never installed it on and this machine is a 32 bit operating system. It installs just fine but when I try to run it, it says not compatible with this operating system. I didn't see an answer to the question, do you know what OS you are using? 32 or 64 bit.
You can go to the start menu, settings icon, system and click about, and where it says system type it will tell you 32 or 64.
I then uninstalled chirp next and installed the legacy version and it ran fine.

Gene, we still need to verify that you're using a 64 bit version of Windows.
You will find 32 bit chirp here: https://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/legacy-20221217/

I was still able to get past the licensing step on my 32bit pc here at the store, it just fails to run after the installation happens saying, "this app can't run on your pc" so if its quitting there, its probably some type of admin, security or antivirus issue I would assume.

No. It is not "some type of admin, security or antivirus issue". CHIRP-next won't run on a 32-bit PC running Windows. Period.
You will either have to upgrade to Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, or fall back to classic CHIRP that was abandoned last December.
Another possibility is to install Ubuntu, Linux Mint or similar to run live on a USB flash drive, boot up on the flash drive and then install CHIRP-next. I've done this and it works fine.
Jim
Hmmm, not sure this is correct. As stated previously, I ran the chirp next installer right after reading this persons email, on the pc I'm sitting at right now which has 32 bit os installed and I was able to complete the installation process. I went into add remove programs to uninstall it so, It should finish the install? What happens is once you try to run the software it states this app in not compatible with this PC. Now maybe its possible that since I technically have a 64 based processor this is making my experience different? I installed the 32 bit OS because I had an old business software that wouldn't run on 64.
Screen shot:
ANYWAY, all this is a mute argument as the original poster will not verify what OS he is running.

Gene, we still need to verify that you're using a 64 bit version of Windows.
You will find 32 bit chirp here: https://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/legacy-20221217/

You can go to the start menu, settings icon, system and click about, and where it says system type it will tell you 32 or 64.
I then uninstalled chirp next and installed the legacy version and it ran fine.

To be clear, CHIRP-next will "only" run on 64-bit Windows. It will not run on 32-bit Windows.
Jim
You have that backwards. *CHIRP-next REQUIRES a 64 bit OS.* It will NOT run on a 32 bit.

That's the problem. Mine never shows anything on the license screen except I must agree, then it just vanishes and never does anything more. A couple of times it did say Chirp not responding before vanishing. Not everytime though.

Thanks for clarifying this info. So if this is true, the installer should not be crashing midway or early on through the install. So he is having a PC issue. Most likely antivirus or malware.

No, Marc, it's not necessicarily a PC issue. We don't know yet, because when he responds he has yet to give us the Type of Windows 10 he is running.
The installer is 32-bit and will run just fine on even a pretty old machine (32-bit and Windows XP), so there's really nothing about his system being incompatible that should be causing the behavior he's seeing. Thus, knowing the architecture and version of his OS is pretty immaterial at this point. I'd place serious money on it being some sort of "security" software killing the installer as soon as it sees it do something totally legit that it decides is suspicious.
For the rest of the readers in this thread, the installer we use is a separate thing and not under the direct control of the CHIRP project. It's a 32-bit application because it doesn't need to be a 64-bit one and gives the best opportunity to run everywhere as a result. However, I'm working on adding an architecture and OS version check to the script so that it will positively identify these unsupported situations in the future. That will rule out any need to suspect these sorts of issues when someone reports a problem.

100% agree. As I said before by pc issue I was meaning security, anti-virus, admin privileges etc.
The installer should at least finish. 32 bit or not.

The installer is 32-bit
I run chirp on a variety of new and old systems. I download and unzip the 32-bit package. I never have a problem this way, and I am grateful that the chirp devs have provided this stand alone use of chirp. I changed to chirp_new a while back, and it runs just fine that way, from Windows 7 to 11. Our ARES group needs to update 20 Icom radios in 20 Emergency Op Ctrs. A 3 minute demo of reading from the radio, editing the file, and writing to the radio, as all it took to show how easy it can be.

You clarified it has nothing to do with the type of processor and has to do with the OS. I've proved that chirp next should at least finish the install on a 32 bit os but when attempting to run gives a pc error.
So this would make it seem like a pc admin issue.
But I agree, we need his answer before it even matters.

Gene the OP sent this file (attached) showing he is running a 64 bit processor AMD Ryzen 5 2500U with 16 GB RAM 64 bit OS, x64 processor. Running Windows 10 Home version 22H2.
He's tried the latest CHIRP-Next and one of the legacy CHIRP versions, and he cannot get past the license agreement, he answers that he agrees to the terms, but the installer seems to dissappear and CHIRP is never installed.
I've suggested to him and sent him a tutorial to make a Live version of Ubuntu Long Term Support (LTS) with persistence and then install CHIRP in it.
I've also told him that his Windows installation is messed up and perhaps will need a reinstall of his Windows 10 Home.
I'm suggesting to him now additionally that it's possible or problem with RAM failure as I have had several similar issues that finally were found to be RAM failure. I ran RAM tests in the full expanded version from one of the Live Linux iso on a USB STICK made with Rufus. I replaced the RAM and I had no more issues with installation errors.
I would like to suggest to anyone who has the knowledge that I lack and suggest that the CHIRP developers produce a version of a Puppy Linux with the latest version of Chirp-Next and upload it to Sourceforge.net as an update to what Sourceforge.net user bgiff158 did years ago for Legacy CHIRP.

Not sure what you mean about "docker containerised version", but as I posted a few days ago, the 32 bit zip file works all the time for me, and doesn't need to be installed. Just unzip and run.

the 32 bit zip file works all the time for me, and doesn't need to be installed. Just unzip and run.
Since this has come up a few times now and people are quite confused, I just wanted to clarify:
There is *no* 32-bit Windows version of CHIRP-next, and there hasn't been since we started at the beginning of the year. The zip file is named "win32" because that is what a lot of non-Windows people (i.e. me) have called the platform for decades. However, that's not proper terminology for 64-bit windows and what was inside that zip file is a 64-bit (only) binary. You can see it from task manager:
I've fixed that in today's build so it's now properly referred to as "win64".
Today's installer should also run on 32-bit machines and tell the user in no uncertain terms that 64-bit is required (if anyone has a 32-bit system around to help confirm, I'd appreciate it). It also checks the OS version and makes sure you're running windows 10 or later to avoid installing it only to find it won't run.
Hopefully that will clarify things a bit for the future!

Thanks a million for posting that. I had wondered why it said 32 bit, and why there was not a 64 bit standalone. For prolly the past 2-3 years, I have been installing on 64 bit, and just figured I was installing a 32 bit version. I still have older laptops with older versions that I have not taken the time to upgrade, because I don't use them often, and they work.
This thinking was such a habit that I didn't think to question it each time I downloaded the "32-bit" version, and it never struck me that with all the discussion about 64 bit, it couldn't be 32! So I do appreciate you posting this and taking this step. I have been using it standalone for so long, I don't recall the last time I installed it.

Another suggestion,
Make damned sure that the chirp version for linux works with the ORCA screen reader. I know this is a bit off topic for this thread, but if y’all are going to make sure that chirp actually works, then Make sure it works accessibly as well. Believe me, being a totally blind user and running radios requiring programming software in order to make them work properly is already enough of a PITA without having to deal with accessibility failures as well.

Gene,
Understood, but we still need verification of your Windows 10 version, is it 32 bit - which will not work - or 64 bit which should work.
If you have 32 bit Windows 10, the current CHIRP will NOT work, you have to install CHIRP Legacy which is here: https://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/legacy-20221217/chirp-legacy-20...

The menu then contained the launch icon and it just worked.
Don't know how you have an issue with installing it on windows so if there is more problem please let us know the details of exactly what is going wrong.

Review the CHIRP-next requirements on the CHIRP download page. For Windows it requires Windows 10 64-bit or later.
