[chirp_users] Programming Troubles
My friend gave me a spreadsheet of frequencies programmed into his radio, which included the following [cid:375c6d51-b334-42c5-b8ed-101eba3ef251] [cid:a9a868ba-c931-4be8-b64c-55106e542ddd]
I can hear him through my radio, but I cannot send to him so that he can hear me. Attached is a screenshot of what I attempted in CHIRP. I have a feeling the problem I am experiencing is due to the Channel Spacing column from his spreadsheet, which I'm not sure how to deal with in CHIRP
I have a BAOFENG A-58 and am using CHIRP for Mac.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Jonas
I believe that a channel spacing of 12.5kHz corresponds to narrow band fm, or NFM in a lot of chirp drivers. See if changing the mode from FM to NFM helps -- hopefully that is an option.

His spreadsheet says he has decode off, so he should hear you no matter what. Try removing TSQL from the Tone Mode column. Really the way you both have your radios set, the result should be the opposite, where he can hear you but you can't hear him. Unless I have who's is who's settings backwards.

The only thing that is going to change when you go from FM to NFM is the voices will sound ‘funny’. It won’t change IF you can hear the other or not. As pointed out before, check your tone or DCS settings.

A loud signal at the microphone of a transmitter set for "wideband FM" (25kHz) should cause RF deviations "out of band" as far as a NFM receiver is concerned. Speaking softly into the mic should be heard just fine up to a point.

Channel spacing is irrelevent. He cant hear you because you have CTCSS encode on and he DOES NOT have CTCSS decode on. You both need either encode AND decode ON or both OFF.

"Channel spacing is irrelevent."
If the mic is causing the TX to deviate outside the expected receiver band then it's not irrelevant and will be squelched. It's basic receiver limitations, DSP or no DSP.

Channel spacing is the steps that the tuning knob or buttons step in. It's DEVIATION that you are referring to. Neither has any effect on SQUELCH on most radios. Deviation will effect the loudness of the received signal.

In CHIRP Tune Step doesn't set transmit deviation or receive bandwidth, Mode (FM or NFM) does.

Hi Jonas,
You friend probably made a mistake on the information that he sent you. It is unusual to not program an encodde (TX) CTCSS tone without a matching decode (RX) CTCSS tone on simplex. What I would do is program 2 channels and upload them to your radio...
Channel 1: Tone Mode = Tone | Tone = 131.8 Channel 2: Tone Mode = TSQL | ToneSql = 131.8
Try them both. Keep the one that works.
Jim KC9HI
My friend had his radio programmed for him by somebody else that he can't contact for help. I'm glad I reached out to the CHIRP community. I feel like I have a few things to try, whereas before I was definitely lost.
