Hi Michael,
Your issue is most likely a driver issue of your programming cord. You will likely need to down grade to the prolific 3.2.0.0 driver. This should take care if the issue.. Below is the link to the miklor site that has detailed instructions with driver download link. Let me know how it goes..
BTW.. I grew up in Le Claire so Hi from a fellow QC'er!

I ordered a programming cable for my Baofeng UV-5RV2+ and the first time I tried to download from the radio I got 25 channels. Trying again only channel 5 and 6 would show up. I upgraded the the latest version of CHIRP and now when I try the radio just reboots and CHIRP says an error has occured, radio does not respond. Did I get a bad cable?
Thanks
Roll your cable driver back to Prolific 3.2.0.0.

I have a Baofeng uv-5r and the radio is garbage and the Baofeng software is scrap. I sent an email to Baofeng about the software and they would not support it. I told them to get F#*&ked and said I would post there reply on Ebay.

I'm not using their software, trying with Chirp. I enabled the developer functions when it would ready only channel 5 and 6 and on the developer tab I could see all the channels listed there but only 5 and 6 would display on the normal pane.
Using the daily 2016-05-07 the radio just reboots

There are probably hundreds or maybe thousands with the Baeofeng radios , including myself and I have programmed at least a dozen for the local CERT Organization with no major problems. Based on this I would say you have something wrong with your system. Jock KC6IIH

I recently purchased 2 BaoFeng UV-5RTP. I purchased "PC03 FTDI Authentic Genuine USB Programming Cable for BaoFeng, Kenwood, Wouxun, AnyTone" by BaoFeng Tech. It was PnP on Windows 10 Pro x64. I have been plugging stuff into HTs for decades, and had exactly the same sense of failure when I tried CHIRP the first several times. I even removed it and inserted it several time. Then I read about inserting it "very hard", and wondering just how hard that could be, gave it a strong push. It went in ~ a mm more, and I was good to go. Don't know how to get that word out there more effectively.
It seems to me, after looking at the Service tab, that CHIRP gets everything from the radio.
I think that the default of 0-25 memories might be revisited, because that tripped me up at first, too.
I corrected the spelling of BaoFeng in the subject, concerned that future searches might use the correct spelling, and miss the post. :-) I mistype all the time. Sigh.

Hi all I have agree with Dave I have been fooled many times thinking the plug was seated when it wasn't. I built an interface box for doing my programming of these radios and had to remove the the plug covers so the plug could be seated properly into the radio, so as Dave says make sure it is pushed in all the way, it takes a lot pressure to seat it

With a Windows computer and a Prolific chip based programming cable, you must download, install and select the older Prolific v3.2.0.0 device driver.
Also if the programming cable was working and then stopped, then...
- the device driver got upgraded to the latest (it would need to be downgraded again - the programming cable was plugged into a different USB port (this would install the latest device driver -- which is not what you want, and, assign a different com port number).

I see now that I should have specified at first that I'm not running windows so the windows specific driver troubleshooting doesn't apply.
What is really odd is I just tried again and it worked, only thing I did different was remove the antenna thinking that maybe it was receiving something even though I was tuned to a frequency that shouldn't have anything on it.

Look at he upper left of the memory editor. See the "Memory Range [0] - [25]?
The first time you load a new radio model, these settings default to 0 and 25. You have to change them to 0 and 127 for a Baofeng UV-5R variant.

Which cable did you buy? I did some reading before ordering the cable & spent the extra for the "FTDI Authentic Genuine" cable. I downloaded daily-20160507, followed recommended startup & see 128 channels. Programed 2 BaoFeng BF-F8+ (UV-5R), no problems. Seems to work great for a radio that costs 1/2 of the replacement battery price for my Yaesu... ;-)

Double check and make sure you are using a Genuine FTDI Cable, they cost around $20.00 at Amazon. Other "Chinese" Knock-off cables that are a lot cheaper resemble the genuine FTDI cable but they use a cloned chip (integrated Circuit) inside the cable that makes it very difficult to use, if not impossible. These are a lot cheaper than the real thing and come with a small CD written in Chinese. I started with one of these and there is a virus on the CD. I had lots of problems with it. If that is a cloned cable, every time you connect to the internet, Windows will install the latest driver and the cable will stop working or cause problems. The correct driver for the cloned cable is 3.2.0.0, but Windows will update it to the newest driver whenever the computer is connected to the internet.
I have an UV82c, 2 BF-888s, a UV-5R and a UV-5RTP and the genuine FTDI cable works flawlessly because Windows automatically installs the newest correct driver.

The 3.2.0.0 driver is for fake PROLIFIC cables, not FTDI cables. Windows should only try to update the driver if you plug the cable into a different USB port. I have several different cables for many different radios, and they all use the Prolific driver, just use the same USB port.
