[chirp_users] Guide for CHIRP *Settings*?
Hi, the Memories portion of CHIRP is well covered here https://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/MemoryEditorColumns. However there a whole other section of the CHIRP software-- the Settings tab (Basic, Advanced, Other, Work Mode, FM Rado preset (obvious), DTMF and Service)
Is there a guide for what all of these many settings are?
Thanks

It would be totally dependent on the radio being programmed. Your best bet would be to compare each setting to the corresponding setting in the individual radio's user manual (which is what the majority of the settings in the Settings tab are based upon).

Attached is the image of my 'working' radio - problem is, it's not working right. This an older Baofeng UV-82L much prior to the recent FCC rule changes. I am both a licensed ham (KG5HEJ) and GMRS (WQYM836) operator. Though I recognize the legalities of using this radio, it's use in the GMRS bands is primarily for monitoring local tourists and providing them with help.
That all out of the way. RX/TX on any of the ham bands is without problem, I can talk with anyone on our local repeater system, or simplex, without a problem (barring mountains which are occasional problems) on the GMRS freqs, I'm seeing (on my BCT15X scanner) a carrier being transmitted in the appropriate freq but hearing no voice on the carrier on both the one GMRS repeater channel and simplex. I and a friend have been all over these settings and I hope we're just missing the obvious (obvious to someone else.)
Anyone ???

Do you have CTCSS tones set on the receive side. If so, remove them. It’s possible the repeaters aren’t sending a tone back to you..

according to Chirp there is nothing set for tone or DTCS on the GMRS channels (frequencies) lines 31 - 52l the only exception is line 53 where I have a positive offset for the local GMRS repeater.
The problem is that I'm sending a carrier but no voice on the carrier. Reception is fine all the way 'round,

Did you ever plug in a speaker microphone? My UV5R is known for sticking inside and it will only transmit the microphone via the speaker microphone. I don't want to open it up to try and unstick the contact inside the jack. Glenn

No, I never have - at least not that I recall. You said that it will only transmit via the speaker mic ... mine is transmitting a carrier but there's no modulation. If your experience is similar, I might try plugging in one of the ones I have. I haven't because I heard reports that they cause it to stick but there hasn't been a good discussion that I've seen regarding the symptoms of "sticking".

Yes, Mine only does the carrier with no modulation, unless I plug in the speaker-mic. So without the speaker-mic, it's just the same issue you describe. I've tried repeated plug-ins to unstick it, but I guess I'm stuck with only using a speaker-mic on that radio. I don't know if an earphone would do the same to a Baofeng. HTH.

I'm going to resurrect this since it seems as if the problem is the way the radio is programed. It's an older Baofeng UV-82L. The symptoms are simply that the radio receives and transmits properly on the local 2M HAM repeaters (where I'm KG5HEJ.) However it receives but transmits an unmodulated carrier on the GMRS frequencies (where I'm WQYM836) If it didn't transmit at all, I'd say it was the radio. I'm aware of the problem of having used an external speaker/mic and 'something' locking up inside so it doesn't transmit - since it's working on one band and not the other (and I really don't want to try the external only to find I now have another problem) I think it's something in the radio's configuration. The latest img file is attached. You can find the GMRS section from line 31-52. Please don't hypothesize, I've already done plenty of that myself. If you see something, please let me know. //al
When you say there is no voice on the carrier when using a repeater, are to listening to the signal from your radio or from the repeater. If you are listening to your repeaters output, you are probably experiencing what is referred to as Desense .
While your monitoring radio is listening to the repeater's output frequency, the radio you are trying to hear is on the repeater's input. (two different frequencies).
Because they are so close, your transmit radio (being on a different frequency) is overloading your receiver.
Try this. Place your monitoring radio in another room to give them some separation. This additional spacing should keep your TX radio from overloading your RX radio. You need to listen to your signal on the same frequency.
Is this a possibility?
Stay safe and healthy.

according to Chirp there is nothing set for tone or DTCS on the GMRS channels (frequencies) lines 31 - 52l the only exception is line 53 where I have a positive offset for the local GMRS repeater.
The problem is that I'm sending a carrier but no voice on the carrier. Reception is fine all the way 'round,

Do you have CTCSS tones set on the receive side.
If so, remove them.
It’s possible the repeaters aren’t sending a tone back to you..

Anyone ???
