[chirp_users] Fwd: baofeng 82c
Purchased a baofeng uv-82c as a backup for my kenwood tk-2170. Chirp won't read the tk-2170 so I am trying to match columns from kenwood program to chirp and don't know what goes where. Where can I get help to make the baofeng work?
Attached is what I'm up against. Yes, I've read through all I can find about the baofeng, but lack the knowledge to know all the terminology. Is there a cross reference from kenwood columns to chirp columns?
I think I have rows 0 through 6 correct, but now sure about 7 through 10. That's as far as I've gotten. The rest of the rows came from someone's not in my area.
Q? how can I leave a blank line in the chirp?
Q? Does kenwood QT/DQT Enc go into Chirp ToneSql?
Q? How do I know if TSQL is correct Tone Mode in Chirp or should I be using something else in this column?
Q? Where do I put the 203.5 from kenwood QT/DQT Dec & QT/DQT Enc in Chirp?
thx,
-Jim McIver
I don't know about that much about Kenwood but these should be correct... Kenwood = Chirp QT encode = Tone QT decode = ToneSql DQT encode = DTCS Code DQT decode = RX DTCS Code
For full explanation of Chirp tone mode menus see... http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/MemoryEditorColumns
It may not be of any help but here is a cross reference between Baofeng and Chirp menus... https://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Baofeng_UV-5R#UV-5R_and_UV-82_Menu...

I've been putting kenwood QT/DQT enc in the chirp ToneSql, and where kenwood TX and RX are the same, I still put kenwood QT/DQT enc in ToneSql, but don't know if Tone should be TSQL, None, or Tone.

It is covered in the guides in the link that I provided.
When...
Tone Mode= (None), both the Tone and ToneSql columns are ignored
Tone Mode= Tone, the Tone column is used to specify the TX CTCSS tone and the ToneSql column is ignore (RX is carrier squelch).
Tone Mode= TSQL, the Tone column is ignored and the ToneSql is used to specify the TX/RX CTCSS tone.
If you click View and enable "Hide Unused Fields" then only the selective squelch columns that are being used will have values in them.
Jim KC9HI
Ok. So that means all my channels need to be TSQL if I am to be able to transmit and receive, if that's the only one where you can TX and RX. Unhiding the fields allowed me to see it was putting info in Tone and ToneSql even though hidden the Tone showed blank.
thx, -jm

Not exactly. TSQL is used to TX with a particular CTCSS tone and to RX with the same CTCSS tone. You never need to have a tone to RX so you can receive just fine using setting Tone Mode to Tone and setting the Tone column to the desired CTCSS tone. If you program a RX tone and the other station does not transmit the matching (on none at all as in the case for many ham repeaters), you will never hear anything. None always works.
Jim KC9HI
Dang, thought I had it figured out. Search and Rescue in my area doesn't use any ham frequencies, just frequencies between 136-174mhz. I have 128 channels in my kenwood tk-2170 that includes a 5 county area. I'm probably looking at months to figure it out. The kenwood shows None in the QT/DQT Dec, so I don't know if I should leave the Tone to the default of 88.5. Tedious typing as I only have 17 of the 128 keyed so far and looks like I'll have to change some when I figure what might work. thx, -jm

Jim,
Like I explained earlier, when Tone Mode is set to "(None)", it doesn't matter what the rest of the selective squelch columns are set to because they are all ignored. If you would enable "Hide Unused Fields" (which is the CHIRP default), then when Tone Mode is set to "(None)", none of the default values would show because all of the fields from Tone to Cross Mode would be blank.
Jim KC9HI
I've been toggling between hide & unhide columns and compaing. If I type info in Hide mode, Tone usually just shows 88.5, which I've been changing to match the Tone when all columns are shown. I misunderstood and thought you could only transmitt with ToneSql set to TSQL. thx, and as you have guessed I'm a newbie, -jm

I'm not sure you are asking what you want. If you want to leave a memory empty, don't program it.
Q? Does kenwood QT/DQT Enc go into Chirp ToneSql?
Depends on what you want. If you want to TX a tone and have no receive tone: Tone Mode: Tone Tone: {the TX CTCSS tone}
If you want to TX and RX with the same tone: Tone Mode: TSQL ToneSql: {the TX/RX tone}
The link for section 6 on this page has some guides and references including some CHIRP "column" guides.

Depends. See above comment and guides.
Q? Where do I put the 203.5 from kenwood QT/DQT Dec & QT/DQT Enc in Chirp?
Depend on if you want to TX the tone only or if you want to TX and RX with the same tone. See above.

Tried leaving a blank row in chirp, but I loaded to radio, it just moved row below up into blank. Radio is or Search and Rescue, so yes I will want to RX and TX. Wished I could send screenshots of what kenwood columns look like, but message size to big. I'll checkout links below. thx, -jm
