[chirp_users] Programing Cable Drivers
Hello does anyone know where i can find drivers for my Yaesu FT8800 Programing Cable for my MacBook . The cable came with a CD with drivers but none for Yaesu .
Thanks Don VE3ULF
Hi Don,
I think you are confused about the driver. The driver is for the type of device in the cable, most likely a USB to serial converter. I expect the device type would be listed in the documentation for the cable or the cable vendor may list the type. You'll need to be sure the driver isn't for Windows but for Mac. Once the driver is installed and the cable connected, you can use Chirp to download from your FT8800, which will let Chirp know the rig you are using. Follow the Chirp docs. My ARES group has six FT8800 rigs that we program with Windows and Macs, but I use Linux.

What I do on linux when I have a new device with no drivers is I connect it, then use the 'lspci' command to find out the info regarding the chipset it is using. Using (lspci -nnv) gives more detailed info. This info is shown in the form {XXXX:XXXX]. Mac uses a similar command if not exactly the same.
Once I have the chipset ID then I can search for the specific needed drivers.

Going to depend on which version of macOS you're running.
If you're using Ventura (13.x): 1. Open System Settings 2. Select General 3. Scroll to the bottom on the right side and select "System Report" 4. Under Hardware, select USB. 5. Try inserting and removing the cable, you should see something on the right hand side appear and disappear. That's your cable. Select it and find the info in the pane below.
If you're using an older version of macOS: 1. Select "About this Mac" 2. System report (or whatever the button on the bottom of the window says for more information) 3. Under Hardware, select USB. 4. Try inserting and removing the cable, you should see something on the right hand side appear and disappear. That's your cable. Select it and find the info in the pane below.
IF you purchase a cable with an actual FTDI chip, MacOS will not need any additional drivers. The FTDI chips are natively supported by the OS.

This bit might not be obvious; if your operating system recognizes the cable as a serial COM port device, that's all you need on the OS side. After that, it's a matter of telling CHIRP what radio and what COM port to use.
Steve
Sometime the cable needs an older driver to perform.

Programming seems to work ok. Can download from the radio, make changes and upload successfully. Using a.usb cable on win 10 with latest chirp update. Just no xmit. Receive works ok. Worth noting: `lspci` will *not* help you if your device is USB, as the name suggests, it "lists" things that are on the PCI bus.
While PCI _can_ exist on external sockets in the form of Thunderbolt (including over HDMI and USB-C), most serial programming cables I've seen are USB. Use `lsusb` for that.
I agree completely. I misspoke when I used lspci and actually meant 'lsusb'. The device is after all a USB device.
Thank you very much for the correction.

Maybe the fields aren't marked correctly. Perhaps try uploading a CVS from another Baofeng from someone on the list. I use the same CSV file in all my radios, usually different brands accept the same fields. But I wouldn't upload an IMG from a different model, just the CSV. I have a local person I found at a club in Monmouth Ocean and he's working on something about the drivers. We are a volunteer group that trains to help the township. They paid for our licenses and we got free radios and don't know how to use them. Tad frustrating. I'm not technical. I can't join clubs if I can't even use the thing! Thanks to all of you. Deb

The Windows Device Manager (you may need to open the Control Panel and search for that item) will give you a handy list of COM ports. Bring up Device Manager, note the COM ports listed, plug the cable in, refresh the DM display if needed, and you should see it, either under COM ports or as a change in the list of USB items.

This only works for Windows, and can be confusing if you aren't familiar with device-manager or have lots of ports.
CHIRP-next has a function for this built in now. In the download box, choose the "Help Me" option in the port drop-down and it will guide you through this procedure from right inside chirp. Works on all platforms and will pre-select the port for you if it is able to determine the right one. I recommend people use (and suggest this procedure to newbies) instead of the device-manager one unless there's a specific reason otherwise.

The Windows Device Manager (you may need to open the Control Panel and
search for that item) will give you a handy list of COM ports.

Hi Deb, If you open device manager, and plug in your cable, and open up ports com and lpt and then unplug your cable, you will see it disappear, and you can plug it back in to note the com port number. I have no idea what my laptop Microsoft 10 recognizes as my port. Is there a way to know?

This bit might not be obvious; if your operating system recognizes the cable as a serial COM port device, that's all you need on the OS side. After that, it's a matter of telling CHIRP what radio and what COM port to use.
