[chirp_users] Change language from Chinese to English-Baofeng UV-5R
When entering my one and only repeater frequency, offset, TX, RX, etc., the language changed from English to Chinese. How do I change it back to English? Can't seem to find the commands in the booklet. Radio receives and transmits fine. Mike in Burien, KG7LRF, new technician class licensee

I am new to this list and probably am making mistakes that are already well known!
I bought a cheap cable running the 2303 chip, which I found later is not so good.
The drivers on the supplied CD seem to work OK, but when I go to use CHIRP, I get an "Error Occurred" message saying "could not open port COM3: [Error 2] The system cannot find the file specified."
Is there anything I can try here, or should I just shop for a better cable?

Well, I got it working by reading the instructions on the CHIRP web site. It suggested downloading a driver from the 409shop.com web site, which I did. Amazingly, the cheap (about $4 including shipping) worked!

I would suggest just tossing the idea of using whatever driver you got on the supplied CD. I ordered a cable and disc set off of Amazon, threw the disc out, downloaded everything off of CHIRP, plugged in my cable, and it went flawless. Not one hitch. This was a Baofeng UV-82. CHIRP rocks!

Not exactly true. With Windows 8 Prolific has announced that certain common chips will not be supported at all, and they seem to be getting better at preventing the old drivers from working. I have a genuine ICOM cable that recently fell victim to this.

It is under menu 14. There is an English/Chinese/None choice that is not shown in the manual.

Mike,
It would seem that you used menu 40 to RESET your radio prior to adding your repeater frequency. Menu 14 (VOICE) on the original UV-5R was either ON or OFF. The default after a RESET is ON. A UV-5R with BFB251 firmware or later, menu 14 has the choices of OFF, ENG (English) and CHI (Chinese). The defalut after a reset is CHI.
Take a look at the "Reference for UV-5R Menus" http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/ (scroll down to "Menu Definitions - Detailed")
So as others have already pointed out, you can use menu 14 to take care of this using the radios's keypad. To do this using CHIRP you would download from your radio, access the Settings->Advanced Settings menu and set Voice to English and then upload the change back to your radio.
