[chirp_users] How in the world . . . .
How in the world did you people get a ham license if you can't read?
The instructions to unsubscribe appear on every message list.
The majority of issues about chirp and your radio can be answered by reading either the radio's manual or the Q&A area of the web site.
Did some sit beside you giving you the answers on the license test?
Or, did you just pass your test by luck?
Just wondering.
Priceless and well put.

What a great instrument!
I'd almost give up Morse to play one of those, they're so sweet.

Not a good idea to be too critical, boys. Those of you who present as knowledgable, get asked the questions. Something like the teacher in a classroom.
If you belittle the kid who asks what *you* think is a dumb question, he won't do it again.
So then what?
Eventually, you will live in your own little world and nobody will ask you anything.
Pretty soon you will be asking the "dumb" questions.
I wonder who will answer.
Maybe we should stop this stuff.

Granted, Fred, but I have little patience with people who won’t take a second to explore, their knee-jerk reaction being to have someone ‘do it for me’. I’m also not an ‘old style’ Ham who grouses at everything. :) This is so common for ANY email list that it should be expected by now. It’s been going on for a decade or more. But for the rest, maybe the suggestion below might be useful….
——>>>> Perhaps if the list owner would add a tag to the lines at the bottom, as many lists do, that says: “to UNSUBSCRIBE click here:” and the list URL. I’m sure that wouldn’t 100% fix it, but it might be an assisting step or at least something those who are ruffled could point to in disgust. :)

I don't think this is really the issue, but this type of attitude is what keeps a lot younger folks out of our hobby.
They go to a meeting, ask what someone else thinks is a dumb question, gets berated and never goes to another meeting.

I can’t find the correlation. This isn’t about amateur radio, this is about common sense. No one groused at answering any radio question. We are being told ‘over and over’ to remove people from the list. My first question is often, ‘how did you get on the list?’. The answer is not ‘they put me on it’.

This is actually included in every message, but it's in the headers. Here's an example:
List-Unsubscribe: http://intrepid.danplanet.com/mailman/listinfo/chirp_users, mailto:chirp_users-request@intrepid.danplanet.com?subject=unsubscribe
This is the "correct" way to provide an unsubscribe link, as specified in RFC 2369 http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2369.html. Capable MUAs should present this to the user in the form of a big unsubscribe button. Unfortunately, many users will use MUAs that don't support this.
On a grander scale, I have to wonder how these users got subscribed in the first place. The subscribe and unsubscribe processes are the same, so they most have been capable of figuring it out at some point if they successfully subscribed. Luckily, this also means most users incapable of unsubscribing themselves will never figure out how to subscribe in the first place.

Tom…..! You don’t seriously expect email/list rookies to be able to find the headers do you? It’s more about what works for apparent email list novices and finding and reading headers isn’t going to be it. They are clearly going to need more spoon feeding than that. I think that’s an awkward technicality up which to take a stance.

This is me turning blue….. I think you’re a few levels above me on this, but I’ll continue pretending to know what I’m talking about a little while longer.
I think the number of people who even use email is dwindling and the number of those who use a traditional client are still fewer. People want a cute GUI, all pre-digested for them, while somewhat old school that I am, still use POP/SMTP and hardly ever fool with webmail. I get all gnarly when people complain about hijacking threads and sort by conversation.
Maybe I am a grouse after all. “She” says I am, LOL, but that’s usually when I’m yelling at other drivers. She has no idea how bad I am online.

1) Mailman should be intercepting most of these 'unsubscribe' requests to the main list and queueing them up as admin requests; the mailing list config probably needs to be tweaked to enable that.
2) I have found tweaking the mailman footers to include the magic work 'unsubscribe' helps quite a bit

Mailman is intercepting the "unsubscribe" requests, but not the "unsubscribing", "remove me", or "don't send me this stuff anymore" requests. I can hardly blame it; Mailman is not a native English speaker (it's written in Python ;-).
Maybe you can suggest some rules to capture this stuff?
Tom KD7LXL
Tom,
The fact that the unsubscribe information is in the header, for a mailing list, is irrelevant in todays world. Todays email user has absolutely no knowledge of email headers or even how to find them. If a list owner wants the subscriber to see how to unsubscribe, a direct link must be put in the message footer.
Yeah, those of us that have been around for a long time know it's in the header, but then, those of us who have been around a long time know how to unsubscribe from a mailing list.

This seems so incongruous to me. Day after day after day ..., there is the same question about Windows drivers and a near-saint-like patient response. Why does the less frequent unsubscribe help request create this reaction? The choices are 1) a one sentence response or 2) nothing.

Most of the time, someone will helpfully point out the means to unsubscribe. What blew up this time was the string of "take me off this lists" requests right after someone did post instructions on how to do just that. Funniest of all was the person who was tired of being "spammed" by a list that he obviously had to opt in to receive. I'm not aware of any random system that just grabs email addresses and adds them to this list -- someone has to complete some action to add an address to the list. Then there is surprise when email shows up, so one has to wonder about the mental acuity of some people.

How did you get on this list in the first place?
Did someone hack your email and sign you up at random?
Or did you just do it yourself, picking some list at random and joining it without remembering it?
Just wondering.
Some of us aren't HAM operators. Besides, being a HAM operator doesn't automagically make you more intelligent. (have you seen the tech test lately?)
It has been standard practice for the last THIRTY+ years on about 99% of all mailing lists that UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the message or the subject header did just that --- Unsubscribed ya.
Old habits die hard, that's all.
It has also been proper etiquette on a listserv for the last 30 years to only submit to the list if you have something to contribute. You aren't better than someone else just because you have a ticket.
You don't have to respond for the sake of responding.
If it truly bothered ya you'd ignore it and eventually they would figure it out.
