Re: [chirp_users] chirp_users Digest, Vol 152, Issue 12
Yaesu FT270 H/H
Greetings, so far I have used CHIRP with 100% success in programming many radios. What I REALLY need is being able to program the YAESU FT270 Hand Held. When is one of you brilliant guys going to update CHIRP with this radio?
Thanks VE7ECJ

No need. There's already an issue for this radio:

It's an unanswered request from 8 years ago, and two duplicate requests were rejected a year later.
It doesn't look like it's likely to happen - I don't see a request for a loaner radio, that a developer is going to take a look into what's involved, etc. AFAIK the FT-270 wasn't a big seller (compared to, say, the FT-60R) or the many permutations of Baofeng radios.

Right. What I meant was that there's no need to file a ticket, as Tony was suggesting, because there already is one. Filing another one would just result in it too being marked as a duplicate.
It'd likely take a developer who happens to have an FT-270, or who's already implemented a similar driver and so could add this one easily.

Ken,
That's not how it works.
If you have a FT-270 to loan, post that availability to https://chirp.danplanet.com/issues/1099
The two duplicate requests were deleted because they were duplicates of the first request.
A post saying you are volunteering a radio for a developer to use would NOT be a duplicate, and it's one of TWO things that must happen before a developer will undertake work on it.
Short answer, until someone volunteers a loaner radio, no one will do work on this except in the unlikely occurrence that one of the volunteer programer's happens to have one himself and wants to use CHIRP with it.
Consider this a request for a promise of a loaner radio, anyone willing to do so, post a message to https://chirp.danplanet.com/issues/1099
Then wait for a volunteer to volunteer.
If you have the talents, consider becoming a volunteer programmer.

I don’t know if this is the proper forum to raise an issue regarding CHIRP on MacBook Pro (Mac OS 11.5.2 Big Sur) but I need help in getting CHIRP to work with regard to interfacing uploads/downloads to my F8-HP HT. If it is not, please provide me with a means by which I can state my problem in detail and track a resolution.
Thank you.

John,
This is the correct forum for issues installing/running CHIRP or for issues programming specific radios.
Is the issue that CHIRP won't run on your computer, or that CHIRP runs, but fails to work with this specific radio?
And just got clarity sake, you are attempting to program the Baofeng BF-F8HP, a radio with 3 power levels.

Thank you for your prompt response. I appreciate it. Issue 1: It seems that you folks update CHIRP quite frequently. Since Apple does not recognize you as a vendor it is somewhat awkward to find the work-around in order to install CHIRP on my MacBook Pro. How do I do this and what is Python Run time option,
Issue 2: When attempting to save the CHIRP grid, I run into all sorts of problems in that it does not recognize the file directory structure on the MacBook, and doesn’t allow me to save change to my desktop or other directory.
Issue 3: I maintain my ‘channeled repeaters’ from the Repeater Book (export). CHIRP does not allow me to import changes from my Repeater Book desktop.
Issue 4: I have the 2M and 70cm calling frequencies programmed into my BF-F8HP channels 1-4 respectively. The import Function of CHIRP overwrites this data causing me to re-enter them again manually. Is there any way around this?
Thanks for listening and I hope I can get some positive feedback to resolve these issues.

I am also a Mac user. I am running a 2015 MacBook Pro with macOS Big Sur (11.5.2). For me, all I need to do is download the MacOS Unified Application (bottom of the list) from this page https://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/ https://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/
Unzip the file by double clicking it in my Downloads folder, then drag the Chirp app from Downloads to Applications. The first time I run the new version of Chirp, I need to go to the Applications folder and right-click or Control Click and choose Open. macOS will give security warning popup and I can choose to open or move to trash. Click Open and Bob’s your uncle.
CHIRP IS NOT fully functional on a MacBook Pro Big Sur 11.5.2. What do I need to do in order to use this product on my MacBook (other than what you outlined below)?
Also, in my original e-mail there were three other issues which were not responded to. They are:
Issue 2: When attempting to save the CHIRP grid, I run into all sorts of problems in that it does not recognize the file directory structure on the MacBook, and doesn’t allow me to save change to my desktop or other directory.

I know very little about programming my F8HP and the instruction manual is very poor. To that end I must rely upon CHIRP and I must say that I am very frustrated in trying to get a straight answer to relatively simple questions.
I have worked in IT for over 50 years and have an BSE degree. I do not care for casual responses or assumptions that your client base is uneducated. Most of your messages and responses within this group are, at best, cryptic and often make unfounded assumptions but, then again, you ge what you pay for. I really have difficulty in trying to understand what it is that you are trying to accomplish.

you do realize that we are end-users like you and not paid technical support that jump at your every request. chirp is an open-source labor-of-love by people who want to contribute their time to the project.
as someone who has almost 40 years in IT and two degrees it didn't take me very long to figure out how to get chirp working on my macbook. no, it isn't an 'official' mac application, that's because registering as a developer costs money, so you have to jump through a few extra hoops to get the application to work on a mac.
2. check your security settings and make sure the application has access to your full disk. 3. you're right, it can't import from repeater book desktop. no one wrote code to do so. feel free to take up the cause and write the code yourself. 4. don't overwrite channels 1-4 in the chirp grid. start with 5 and go on from there.
you're right, they were pretty simple answers.

I don't know, I'm currently using CHIRP on my M1 MBA running Big Sur 11.5.2 and programming the 8 radios I have from Baofeng to Wouxun with custom channel lists, scan groups and even setting radio features. CHIRP is awesome software, and while it's not perfect, no software is, but it's certainly quite capable and better than what has been supplied to me by the various manufacturers of my radios. Sorry to hear you're having so much trouble, but whineing, acting entitled, and shitting on this list certainly isn't going to solve your problems.

I’m not looking for perfection but stability across multiple platforms. A software product that ‘reacts’ to bug fixes and a whining user platform is far from stable. CHIRP echos the failure of the ‘out of tune’ bandwagon of HT manufacturers to the degradation of those who mfg. quality products. If you think managing expectations of product quality and functionality is ‘entitlement’ you missed the boat. If you paid for CHIRP would you accept less? If you donate to support an inferior product you should at least expect a little more than Plugging the hole in the dyke with your finger.

Chirp is just fine for most users. If you're having problems then don't use Apple hardware. There's always RTSystems offerings at $50 per radio type.
I'm sometimes seeing Chirp updates daily. That sounds like support. The other problems are with Apple not liking software that they haven't approved and their continually changing platforms.

Well I don't know what to tell you. CHIRP works just fine for me, and I suspect it works well for many other Mac users. Perhaps it's time you put that 50 years of IT experience and degree to good use and work to resolve your issues. I answered the questions you posed earlier, not sure what you mean about it being 'far from stable' I've never had it crash out on me. As I previously stated, I don't feel CHIRP is an inferior product at all.
Have you gone to your HT manufacturers and asked to use their provided software? You did pay for their handsets and their support after all.
