I thought I sent this email the other day but must have started writing it and never sent.
Is there any documented cases of Chirp bricking a radio so badly it had to be sent back for a factory restore.
I see so many Yaesu users bring this up that they're afraid to use Chirp because it will break a radio bad enough to void warranty etc. etc...

I have used chirp with my FT1D and FTM400 and never bricked either of them.
While working on drivers for those 2 radios I have sent settings to the radio that effectively factory reset it but never bricked it. So unless you're changing the source code I think you should be fine with either of those.

CHIRP has worked just fine for my Yaesu FT-70D.

I tried CHIRP on the FT-7800R with no problems and nothing broke but I can't use CHIRP because it doesn't support split tone mode and the developers aren't interested in adding it.
Years ago when I bought the radios I bought FTB7800 programming software from G4HFQ https://www.g4hfq.co.uk. Its cheap fully supports everything in the radio unlike CHIRP.

So use CHIRP to enter most of your info, manually enter the little bit of split tone you need. Yaesus are easy to program.

I've used CHIRP to program two different Yaesu radios. Talked to a Yaesu tech one time. He claimed he knew of instances where Yaesu radios were "bricked" so badly they had to be sent back to Yaesu. Yet, outside of someone who stood to make money selling either RT Systems software or worked for Yaesu, I've not had one single person claim to have actually experienced a bricked Yaesu.

I think for Yaesu radios the old ones had to go into clone mode which could cause them to get an image in the wrong format if you pick the wrong thing, or have an unknown firmware. I don't think most newer radios will have this problem unless they take an IMG file and you accidentally pick an IMG from the wrong radio.

Your money, your paranoia. RT gets expensive when you've got several different radios. It's twice the price of a cheap radio.

So, the answer to the question seems to be: "there's not any documented cases of CHIRP bricking a YAESU radio". Lots of speculation, concern, etc. but nothing actually concrete.
Right?

Correct. Whilst someone might have had an incident, it is mainly scaremongering.

I've used Chirp many times with my FT-60 w/o so much as a sneeze.
Back in the day, speculation was these stories were circulated by Yaesu due to their partnership with RTS. I know HRO sold bare 'Kenwood' cables but for my FT-60 I had to buy a cable with the RTS software for $40 - $50. SW was useless to me, me being a Linux guy (and back then w/o a Win VM.)
And at that, I later found the cable wouldn't work with one of the wx-resistant Yaesu models -- the overmolding wouldn't fit down into the programming socket.

I tried Chirp and some other program I think it was called FT60 Commander? Anyway, could never get it to work, the Chirp software and the radio could not “speak” to each other. I’ve been using the ADMS software for the last ten years with both the FT60 and the FT-7900 with absolutely NO problems. Sure, it’s $50 as opposed to “free” (Chirp), but it works, I’m familiar with it, and it does what I want it to do.

Mark, I can certainly understand why you're sticking with what you have. Makes lots of sense. However, your description doesn't sound like your radio was bricked. That version of CHIRP just didn't want to talk to it. It may work, now, but there's no reason for you to switch, since you already have working software. Am I right?

No, nothing bad happened. It was years ago, and you might be right. Maybe it was an earlier version of CHIRP that just wasn’t going to work no matter what. In any case, I have the ADMS and it works great for me.

With the FT-60 Commander software, use the Alternate Write Method. It should work.

Mark, I can certainly understand why you're sticking with what you have. Makes lots of sense. However, your description doesn't sound like your radio was bricked. That version of CHIRP just didn't want to talk to it. It may work, now, but there's no reason for you to switch, since you already have working software. Am I right?

Anyway, could never get it to work, the Chirp software and the radio could not “speak” to each other. I’ve been using the ADMS software for the last ten years with both the FT60 and the FT-7900 with absolutely NO problems. Sure, it’s $50 as opposed to “free” (Chirp), but it works, I’m familiar with it, and it does what I want it to do.

Is there any documented cases of Chirp bricking a radio so badly it had to be sent back for a factory restore.
I see so many Yaesu users bring this up that they're afraid to use Chirp because it will break a radio bad enough to void warranty etc. etc...
