[chirp_users] NC Hams using chirp
Any hams in the Raleigh NC area that are using chirp (preferably with Icom 92ad) that could help me troubleshoot why I can't program the IC-92ad?
Dwayne
Did you make sure to set the correct com port in the Chirp program to coincide with the port that the cable is attached to when hooked to the computer? Did you also make sure the cable is plugged in all the way?

Yes sir I verified the com settings and that the cable is fully seated.

Dwayne go to www.miklor.com and take a look at their cable and troubleshooting guide. You can usually find info there that will actually solve your problem. I've sent many there and they usually got things sorted out. The Icom 91/92AD is listed in the daily build as supported so you may have a cable or driver issue. Roughly 80% of communication issues are driver oriented and Miklor will help you eliminate any driver issue you might have.

I went to the miklor site, my driver shows up as being a supported driver for a FTDI cable which I am using (driver version 2.10.0.0). I tried a different computer and still the same thing. So far I have tried two windows computers, a mac computer, and checked every suggestion I can find on the web (ftdi chip website, miklor etc) and the chirp mailing list. I have rebooted my computer several times. I have even performed a factory reset of the radio. Nothing I have tried has allowed chirp to talk to the radio. I am at a lost as to what could be the problem unless the cable could be bad. I have programmed the radio in the past with the RTSystems cable and software using their opc-478 cable and the icom 1797 cable. That is why I was hoping someone in the raleigh area of NC would happen to have both chirp and the IC-92AD functioning correctly, so I could try their computer and cable to see if it was the radio or if it was my cable and/or computer.

There was a. live linux CD that had chirp on it that was all set up.
Linux is best because you don't need drivers, the live CD eliminates the problems with Linux permissions and groups which sometimes snag the first time Linux user.
Here is the Live CD link and important information on making a Live USB from it. http://sourceforge.net/projects/chirplivecd/files/?source=navbar

Well if Miklor couldn't help you, there is a cable loopback tester. http://www.kc8unj.com/soft.html
It will scan your computer for COM ports and test the cable if it is a kind that sends TX and RX serial data over the same line. If not then you just need to jumper the TX and RX together. So as Jim says if the cable won't pass this test it won't work.

The cable you need to use with the 92AD would fail a loopback test because it's not a looped cable. If that test passes, then I'd expect you're using an OPC-478 and the bayonet adapter to connect it. If so, that won't work with CHIRP. CHIRP talks to the 92AD in live high-speed mode, which doesn't require going into clone mode, and which won't work with the OPC-478.

so you are saying the only cable that will work with chirp and the IC-92AD is the icom cable that plug directly into the 92AD and has the RS232 end? Is there any RS232 adapter that will wor with this cable and chirp as all of my computers have USB ports and no RS232 port. Is there any hope that this will change in Chirp in the future so the OPC478 cable can be used?

Yes. Not sure if they have a USB version now or not.
Is there any RS232 adapter that will wor with this cable and chirp as all of my computers have USB ports and no RS232 port.
Yes, they're very cheap and can be used to connect anything that uses a DB-9 serial port on a computer that doesn't have one. Depending on your operating system, the recommendation for a good cheap one will vary, but folks here will be glad to help suggest one, I'm sure.
Is there any hope that this will change in Chirp in the future so the OPC478 cable can be used?
Nope. It'd be a complete rewrite of the driver for very little reason. The current driver allows live editing of the memories in the radio without booting into clone mode, which is much faster, less error-prone, etc.

There are diagrams and pinouts of the 1799 cable if you Google mine say 1799 pinout. I guess what's needed is a TX and RX line and ground. Now if you can find a USB to serial data cable without a combined RX and TX line you could rig something up. I did something similar with my RTSystems DB9 to Mini DIN 6 pin. I cut the DB9 off, found the wire for pin 6, serial data input and pin 5 (I think) for ground. The Yaesu uses one wire for both TX and RX and my spare cable also supplies one wire for ground and one wire for data. But you need full duplex so you need a full duplex cable that you could just wire a DB9 to or get the 1799 and cut the DB9 off and basically you would have just 3 connections. I've found a lot of sites offering diagrams by using Google and setting the search for images. If you have a cable that has that special connector on it you can get the pinout for it I'm sure. Just takes a little leg work.

so you are saying the only cable that will work with chirp and the IC-92AD is the icom cable that plug directly into the 92AD and has the RS232 end? Is there any RS232 adapter that will wor with this cable and chirp as all of my computers have USB ports and no RS232 port. Is there any hope that this will change in Chirp in the future so the OPC478 cable can be used?

The cable you need to use with the 92AD would fail a loopback test because it's not a looped cable. If that test passes, then I'd expect you're using an OPC-478 and the bayonet adapter to connect it. If so, that won't work with CHIRP. CHIRP talks to the 92AD in live high-speed mode, which doesn't require going into clone mode, and which won't work with the OPC-478.

Well that would explain it for me. He needs to buy a USB to DB9 FDX serial cable, the 1799 cable plugs into the DB9 cable and the custom plug into the 92AD. Or if his PC has a DB9 on back just the 1799. I used to program my FT8900 with USB to DB9 and DB9 to min din 6 . Worked but the driver, the latest for the Radio Shack USB cable was for Windows 2000. And although it worked the driver didn't play nice with the other two com port 3200 drivers for Anytone and Baofeng. I had a spare Anytone cable, chopped the end off both cables and connected the ground and rx/tx wire to the mini din 6 pin and it works fabulously with the FT8900.

Folks, the OPC-1797 cable does not connect to the data pins on the 92AD. Thus, unless you can find some leaping electrons, you cannot use it to program / control the radio. Many of us tried, always wishing to avoid the awful price if the 1799.
I did a lot of searching and think I found the proper Hirose connector - at least as close as I could mike the dimensions. However the cost of that connector was $12.95 plus shipping and the catalog said that it required special tooling to assemble. The OPC-1799 started to look pretty cheap.
