Is the programming of the UV-6 software or a driver/cable issue.
What error messages are you getting?

I know that this is a little off topic and this radio isn't supported by Chirp, but has anyone actually been able to program one?
This is a 16 Channel VHF only unit.
I've tried just about all the software from Baofeng that I can find, but I have not found anything that will talk to the radio.
I am 'assuming' it is using a Kenwood cable configuration as well.

Jack and I are seeing the same thing. We don't have the right software for the right radio.
I know 100% in my case that the computer, ports and cable are functional.
Boafeng own software has language localization issues. The software loads but all the icons are full of question marks. .???
The failure is that the program tries to talk to the radio and the radio does not respond, so it times out.
Sorry for the bandwidth on the chirp reflector, but this was the best collection of these type of users I know.
Sadly there is no BF-v6 listed on their download site.

Mike, Not sure if this applies or not, but with some of the software, when it is unzipped, one of the files is a language file, ie. Chinese.ini, English.ini, etc.
Delete the Chinese.ini file and only leave the English.ini This forces the program to open with the only .ini file it finds.
Worth a try...

I have seen that as well. For the one that I get a Chinese Character set, I have been able to change to English. The one program I think that can do it has Zero characters on it (english or chinese) and everything is replaced by a ???.
Again, I apologize for taking up the space on the Chirp reflector.
The best I can tell is that the actual program is called BF-480 based on what I found on 409Shoppe's site.
I know the port and the cable work as I can use the same cable and same port (FTDI) to read my UV-5R with Chirp. I also know they aren't holding open the port as I do close down Chirp before testing. I have even tried after a reboot with the BF-480 software being the first code used.
My note to self will be to check the Chirp support hardware list first before ordering new hardware! :)

Yes. But if the memory layout and settings are the same, the 'check' can be added to the driver. The driver for the UV-5R also supports the F-11 and UV-82 in a similar fashion.
Jim
Hi Jim
I'm not sure what you are saying?
While the 888 might work with the V6, the only way around this would be to have Dan bypass the check. I don't see that as a driver issue as the only driver we are using is the one that controls the serial port, and we know that works.
Unless, I am missing something obvious, and that could actually happen based on todays history with the BF480 software! :) Is there an manual override?

Mike,
The "device driver" for the programming cable and the "driver" used by CHIRP to interface with a particular radio (or closely related radio family) are two completely different things.
The CHIRP "driver" is a small program or module that interfaces CHIRP with the particular Brand/Model of radio that it was written for. The UV-5R driver/module (uv5r.py), for example, knows how to initiate cloning with 4 different (but closely related) radios.
1 the original UV-5R 2 the UV-5R with BFB291 and later firmware 3 the F-11 from Import Communications 4 the UV-82
What you are calling a check is more like a "roll call". CHIRP asks for each type one-by-one until it gets an acknowledgement. When the acknowledgement is received, CHIRP then knows the radio exactly which type it is dealing with and begins the clone process. If no acknowledgement is received, then the dreaded "Radio did not respond" error is returned.
All I am saying is that most likely all that is needed for the BF-480 (and UV-6) to be supported by CHIRP is to have its "identity" added to the BF-888s driver's "roll call" list.
Jim KC9HI
Mike, Can you send me or post the link to the BF-480 software. Thanks, Jack

OK, I figured this out. A typical very stupid user error.
The correct software is their BF-480 software.
Setup up the com port, pick BF-480 and the VHF or UHF frequency range you want.
Select Read from Radio.
Next, pops up the 'BAR' that we are used to seeing. For old farts like me, I just sat their and stared at it. For a LONG time. Days, weeks. :)
It never occurred to me to hit the OK button. I did get pretty good at hitting the Cancel button though. :)
Ok, head between legs.

- :) It would cost me 1/2 that to ship it to him.
Donations are always appreciated, and hardware donations help us ensure that things _continue_ to work. If you're serious about that donation, I think it should be made to Jim Unroe. He's done a huge amount of work on the other Baofeng radio drivers and has the best understanding of them I think. Perhaps you and a couple of other V6 owners could pool some donations and buy Jim a radio? At $41, it wouldn't take much :)

Anytone has come out with the AT-3318UV-A handy talkie. I think they might be popular so prepare for some inquires about support. Personally I won't beat an Anytone radio with a stick after finding out how paranoid they are about releasing any service data. And I have friends about a mile from me that sell and service the Hytera digital LMRs that are well capable of working on handy talkies but I'll be damned if Anytone would fork over some service literature even after I made them a video of inside the shop and all the General Dynamics R8000 radio monitors, spectrum analyzers and other gear worth hundreds or thousands of dollars. Anytone was paranoid their radio would be counterfeited if schematics were given out. So as someone who works on the stuff I consider all of these Chinese radios throw aways when they break.

If we are going to do this, the easiest way is to just pay Jim to order one and have it land at his door.
I got the BF480 software to work twice. Enough times to program 2 radios. I should have trapped the RS232 communications.
Unfortunately, I don't have the radios as they were for a friend at a ski hill. I can get them back likely, but if we buy one for Jim, then it won't be needed.

There is also this one on baofeng website: http://www.baofengradio.com/UploadFiles/20130521142814635.rar
It defaults to chinese, so need to pick the dropdown menu next to last on the right to change to english.
I took a look, and it seems like identical to other "Jujumao" programming software in the vein of UV-5R and variants, so probably an extension to uv5r.py class...
