Is it a new cable?  There are a lot of cables out there that have bad chips that used to work but don't work with newer versions of the Windows 10 driver.  And since Windows 10 automatically updates the drivers, some cables that used to work quit along the way.

Those cables can still be used if you roll the drivers back. Usually hits Prolific cables, use driver 3.2.0.0. No problems.

Billy, sometimes Windows changes them back from 3.2.0.0. Check your COM PORT and make sure it is on COM5.

While you're at it, go back into Device Manager, right click the COM PORT, and tell it to Update The Driver. (It's can't hurt at this point!)

I think you are being a bit judgmental on that, it is most likely your operating system, Chirp works and works well... If anything Windows sux... It is a trojan for which people are fooled into paying for. Between the OS and the stupid USB chip brujaja, Chirp it an't.

If you're using Mac or Linux skip the questions regarding Device Manager, but you may still get a notification if you unplug and plug back in your USB cable. We need to know the name the notification gives you for the location of the cable.

Most of the problems people have is they are using counterfeit chips in inexpensive pirated USB converters under Windows which use Prolific chip sets, or the cable physically isn't fitting into the radio sufficiently enough and we can advise you what to do to make it fit.

We need more information from you to start helping you.

All you've given us now is that you're using a new cable and your using Windows 10.

Bill, we’re a helpful group but you really have to give us more to go on.

“Nothing happened” is not a useful response – something happened, the program hung up and appeared to stop; you received an error of some kind – please tell us what; the radio burst into flames --- something happened.

I downloaded the chirp software – that’s a good start and I presume that you installed it; connected the cable to the laptop (and I presume the radio?) – what com port is it using, did you check?; opened the download – after selecting what radio from the drop down? – and I presume you tried to download using Chirp but that’s again, just presumption.

Get the idea? We’re not there so we can’t see what you’re doing, nor can we see what the radio responds – you have to tell us --- yes, the minutest detail can make a big difference.

I’m not sure why people think this is such a hassle. I probably have 10 cables with the fake prolific chip in them, each one is treated exactly the same. If I do have to roll back the driver, it takes less than 2 minutes. I have saved over $200.00 by not buying new cables. How often are you programming your radios, anyway?i probably have at least 10 mobile radios and 15-20 different ht’s I’m dealing with. I don’t need to change them all that often. Mostly I am helping others get their radios set up.

First of all go to Miklor at Cables & Drivers - Prolific & FTDI and download the 3.2.0.0 driver version of the Prolific Cable. There are instructions on the website on how to install it. This is the only way it it going to work. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Download the Prolific Drivers: (get the Zip version) Prolific 3.2.0.0 recommended for Vista, Win7 / 8 / 10 3.2.0.0 exe 3.2.0.0 zip (32/64 bit)

Get the ZIP Version.

After you download and unzip it, rename the folder to Miklor 3200 or something you can remember, and make sure the files are in the folder.

Then RIGHT CLICK on THIS PC on your desktop and select Properties.

When the window opens select Device Manager

Go to your Ports (COM & LPT) and you will see the COM port with the error (or it may not have an error, just select the COM Port.)

Right click on it and select Properties.

Go to the DRIVER TAB and select Update Driver.

When that window opens, select the BOTTOM one that says: Browse My Computer For Driver Software - Locate & Install Driver Software Manually.

As soon as you click on that, browse to your Miklor folder with version 3.2.0.0 and let it install.

Every time you plug that cable into a different USB Port, it will be assigned a different COM Port.

It's easy to change a COM Port, go to back to your COM Port in Device Manager and Right click it and select Properties.

Go to the Port Settings Tab at the top, click Advanced in middle of page, then click on COM Port Number at the top that is NOT used (or one you are used to using).

I walked you through it the same as I have done many times before I got a FDTI Cable.

The FTDI Cables are about $20 on Amazon and they are a lot LESS hassle!
