[chirp_users] Ubuntu 20.04 chirp not found
Just added the repo to my Ubuntu MATE 20.04 install, updated apt, but when I run apt-get install chirp-daily I get Unable to locate package chirp-daily.
This is the result of many distributions removing python2 based packages from their repositories.
There is a flatpak which has worked great for a number of users on recent Ubuntu/Fedora distributions. Check the thread back in May at http://intrepid.danplanet.com/pipermail/chirp_users/2020-May/016594.html on how to get it. You will need to install flatpak and logout/login first.
Maybe @Richard Shaw can chime in on any updates he's made since then.

Unable to locate is NOTHING to do with python2. It's to do with you're using a repo that doesn't contain Chirp.
Recommend that you use XENIAL.

I'm not sure what's happened on the flatpak side but I just built the latest version and I get the following error:
$ flatpak run com.danplanet.chirp Traceback (most recent call last): File "/app/bin/chirpw", line 131, in <module> from chirp.ui import mainapp File "/app/lib/python2.7/site-packages/chirp/ui/mainapp.py", line 26, in <module> import gtk ImportError: No module named gtk
Nothing other than the version update has changed on my side.
When I reinstall the previous version it works but still has some worrisome output:
flatpak run com.danplanet.chirp WARNING: python-future package is not available; chirp.drivers.ga510 requires it WARNING: python-future package is not available; chirp.drivers.tk8180 requires it Gtk-Message: 11:29:40.794: Failed to load module "pk-gtk-module" WARNING: Icon not found
Thanks, Richard
Where is the "flatpack" you are running? I missed it. have you tried doing an install on
"python-future_0.15.2-1_all.deb" ?

This isn't anything Ubuntu or Debian based, it uses the platform defined in the flatpak configuration file, in this case:
"app-id": "com.danplanet.chirp", "runtime": "org.gnome.Platform", "runtime-version": "3.32", "sdk": "org.gnome.Sdk",
Which worked previously although this platform/sdk is depreciated for the same reasons chirp was removed from some distros. Python 2 EOL.
Thanks, Richard
Richard, I don't know what or who you are responding to. My response that you replied to was my comment to Ronalds problem, it has // nothing to do with the flatpack. His system can't see the the packages on the dansmith WEB page.

You top posted on top of my last message and mentioned flatpak, so you can see how I might have gotten confused.
Thanks, RIchard
Richard, why not install Python 2.7 and be done with it? Edit your sources list and you will receive the updates like you did before.

I am. I'm building Python 2.7 from source within the flatpak sandbox environment. The problem is it's not finding the gtk python module even though it is getting built as well.

Richard,
Its "python-gtk2_2.24.0-6_amd64.deb" Its on the xenial mirrors.

There seems to be a lot of confusion here, and very complicated proposed solutions. The simplest solution is to revert your Ubuntu to any version that still include Pythons 2,7, which apparently anything before 20.04 (I use 16.04 and have never felt compelled to get a newer version), then USE DAN SMTH'S repository and install according to his instructions. Here is a copy and paste from chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp//Downloads:
If you are using Ubuntu linux (or a compatible variant such as Mint) you should install and use the PPA like this:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:dansmith/chirp-snapshots sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install chirp-daily

Nothing complicated about Python2. Go to python.org, download V2.7 something and install the .deb file.

No confusion at all. You can easily run Chirp on Ubuntu 20.04 and then on Mint 20 when its released. Just install Python 2.7, edit your sources list. Everything is back up and running. You actually should at least try 20.04, it has quite a few new changes. Worth the install.

Richard, why not install Python 2.7 and be done with it? Edit your sources list and you will receive the updates like you did before.
I am. I'm building Python 2.7 from source within the flatpak sandbox environment. The problem is it's not finding the gtk python module even though it is getting built as well.
