[chirp_users] Windows 10 and 11 S Mode
I’m trying to help my boyfriend’s Dad pick out a laptop that he can install CHIRP on and needed to know whether the Microsoft Surface Laptops running Windows 10 and Windows 11 in S Mode were compatible. I read through everything I could. I’m tech savvy but know nothing about Ham Radios. I don’t want him to purchase a computer that he can’t download and run CHIRP on. Thank you!

Will it work on a 2 in 1 or Windows Surface that runs Windows 10 S Mode? I didn’t know if there would be any compatibility issues. Thank you for the super fast reply!

Not a windows expert, but from what I read the "S" mode is quickly & easily turned off. No problem. In S mode, you can only install apps from the Microsoft App Store. So most people turn that off on the first day. Then there may be an option to upgrade to Windows 11, and from what I hear, it's better not to do that at this time. So watch for that.
You're going to want a computer that has at least 1 normal USB A port, to plug the programming cable into. Kinda important for the mission. So be aware of that. Some new laptops only have USB C ports. Other than that, Chirp is pretty light weight, doesn't need a lot of power to run it.

Very helpful! I picked out one that is perfect and since I won’t be there to help him use it we’re not doing a surface or a 2 in 1. Good to know about 11! Thank you so much!

I was told the windows S mode, is basically a chromebook, running windows. Ok for internet stuff, but will not run any programs. Unless someone says I am wrong, do not buy one.

Windows mode S has NOTHING to do with Chromebooks. Not a single similarity. Mode S just means that all apps/programms must come from the Microsoft store. You can always swith off mode S.

You might be able to force it into windows 10 compatible by right clicking on the icon and changing how it behaves in the settings. You can do that in many of the windows versions as some programs are slow or windows hides all the compatibility stuff.

You don't have to FORCE anything. It runs fine on both Win 10 and Win 11.

and you have not answered the question
this OPs question was about S mode - and the answer to that depends on whether Chirp and signed and available in the Smode libraries or whether the device needs to be taken to 'normal' windows to install chirp and any drivers for the programming leads etc

Just thinking "out loud", but will the Windows in-place application version of CHIRP work in Windows S-mode?
Personally not a fan of S-mode and I switch all my devices to standard Windows. Maybe I'm missing out...

Nicola,
I use chirp both on my Mac and on a Dell Inspiron 15 3000. It came to me in S - mode but I found a setting that let me take it into regular Windows Home mode. S-mode is just a security mode that won’t allow you to load software except from the Microsoft store.
As far was the Surface goes, I can’t tell you. That’s why I bought the Dell - because I’m sure that it will run anything I want that’s for Windows and is ham related.

devices sold in S mode are aimed at 'appliance' level home users - who have become used to the curated ecosystem of iOS and Android rather than the 'fiddling' that traditional desktop (and laptop) deployments of various OSes have needed
as you correctly point out you can take such machines out of S mode and into the 'normal' consumer Win 10 / 11 'home' editions relatively easily

Nicola,
I use chirp both on my Mac and on a Dell Inspiron 15 3000. It came to me in S - mode but I found a setting that let me take it into regular Windows Home mode. S-mode is just a security mode that won’t allow you to load software except from the Microsoft store.
As far was the Surface goes, I can’t tell you. That’s why I bought the Dell - because I’m sure that it will run anything I want that’s for Windows and is ham related.

this OPs question was about S mode - and the answer to that depends on whether Chirp and signed and available in the Smode libraries or whether the device needs to be taken to 'normal' windows to install chirp and any drivers for the programming leads etc

Works fine on both Win 10 and Win 11 but not in Mode S. You'll have tpo take the Surface out of Mode S first.

Doesn't answer your questions but, for what it's worth...
I set up Raspberry Pi 3B just use as a portable Chirp programming machine.
I use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and a small 6" TFT Screen.
No drivers and such to worry about.
Small and portable, (I take it club meetings and program folk's HT's for them).
Total investment was about $45.00.

A RPi 3B that would be Linux, but then CHIRP was born on Linux, Windows came later... It is Python based. So if Bill is running it on and RPi it is most likely Linux. Windows does not do so good on small machines.
I do the same thing, i run CHIRP on an RPi. I got me a RPi 400 which is the RPi in a keyboard. That was one of the reasons.
Now if we can just get the DMR radios to talk Linux that will be all I want.

Hi Al,
Raspberry Pi OS... which is based on Debian Linux.
Easy to set up and use.
There is a Raspberry Pi image out there called "Ham Pi".
It has a ton of Amateur Radio software pre-installed, including Chirp.
I have a separate Raspberry Pi set up with that I use in the shack.

I see more Windows discussion than anything else. It is so easy to run on Linux (where it is native) that for the price of a RPi, why put up with that steaming batch of stupidity called Windows. And for the price of a RPi 400 you just need to add a screen and you are off to the races...

Most people buy a new computer because their old one is unable to be upgraded ( no longer supported BS ) and not especially to run one application, I had this problem when I had to 'on board' to Microsoft 365 Teams.
The laptop I purchased was running Win11 S mode and doesn't come with the usual email program, I tried to download Thunderbird but not being a Microsoft product it wouldn't work until I took it out of S mode.
Cheers

You need to add a screen, a mouse, a power supply, and an SD card.
The screen can get pricey pretty fast - money saved by buying a smaller screen will soon be spent on a pair of 'readers' to use the smaller screen.
I'm a big fan of RPi, but people like to gloss over the actual cost of such a setup.
An RPi 400 (Pi in a keyboard) setup can easily run $100 + monitor, cheaper than a new laptop, but pretty close to low-end, off-lease corporate laptops.

I buy a Logitech K400 which has a touchpad on it for about $20 at Walmart or other places that sell them. I either use a repurposed TV or go to the local IT recycler and get me a monitor for $5-$10. You do not need that much SD card for Chirp so that will cost less than $10. So far I still am not near $100. Part of being a ham is learning to scrounge. Part of running a RPi is also learning to scrounge. For travel I carry a RPi the keyboard and an HDMI cable and use the HDMI port on the TV in the hotel.

Chuck,
My $100 number started with an RPi 400, not a 'traditional' RPI.
RPi 400 - $70 Mouse - $7 Power adapter - $7 HDMI cable -$7 (microHDMI to standard HDBI) Name-brand MicroSD card - $7
That gives you $98 plus monitor, or simply get the RPi 400 'complete kit' for $100 and get a nice book also.
Substitute a 2 Gig RPi 4 (assuming you can find one):
RPi - $45 Case for RPi 4 - $5 Keyboard - $20 (I too like Logitech K400) Power adapter - $7 HDMI cable -$7 (microHDMI to standard HDBI) Name-brand MicroSD card - $7
That gets you to $91 plus monitor.
Either path takes you close to $100, esp once you add in tax, s/h, etc.
It's nice that you have a junk box that has all the needed items so you can 'scrounge' them, but it's disingenuous to assume everyone else has a similar junk box.

Ken, in this case I do not have a junk box, but there is an IT recycler (actually several) in town and they all have monitors and are more than glad to part with them for a few $$. I think if people will look around they will find that most cities of any size will have them and a lot of computer shops end up with a collection of mon- itors for the which they will gladly part for a few $$.
Even in more rural areas, I am going to bet that more than one shop has monitors that they would like to be rid of, they work but perhaps are not the best for the usual video but for a Chirp/ RPi setup they would work great.
I see the IT recyclers here send them to grind up, so many monitors and so little space. If they get a few $$ for them that is more than they get when they are sent to the grinder.
When I talk about scrounging, it is not necessarily in my junk box, if people will look a wee bit they will find that there are a lot of ways to keep costs down. Most TV's have HDMI inputs now and for Chirp they work pretty well, even small ones.

In many places, you don't need to pay for a monitor at all. Check your local Freecycle list, or the free section of Craigslist. People are giving away monitors (and TVs) all the time.

I'm a big fan of RPi, but people like to gloss over the actual cost of such a setup.
An RPi 400 (Pi in a keyboard) setup can easily run $100 + monitor, cheaper than a new laptop, but pretty close to low-end, off-lease corporate laptops.

Yes that is certainly true.

In many places, you don't need to pay for a monitor at all. Check your local Freecycle list, or the free section of Craigslist. People are giving away monitors (and TVs) all the time.

Chuck,
It seems you really want to convince me that monitors aren't expensive - I'm not sure why, since everything I've written is "+ monitor".
Yes, people can use their home TVs.
Yes, older computer displays are abundant and in many cases freely available.

You left out PS, mouse, hdmi cable & microSD card, and adding those to a $70 RPi 400 takes you close to the $100 mark I mentioned.
